Using the FS-1-WL Editor

This manual explains how to connect the FS-1-WL unit and FS-1-WL Editor app, and how to operate the FS-1-WL Editor. Use Bluetooth® to connect for the smartphone app, and use USB to connect for the computer app.
* You must update the FS-1-WL to Ver.1.02 or later
to use the FS-1-WL Editor.

Connecting the FS-1-WL to FS-1-WL Editor (Android)

1. Power-on the FS-1-WL unit and the mobile device.
To edit MIDI information, power up the FS-1-WL in MIDI mode. To edit HID information, power up the FS-1-WL in HID mode.
2. In your mobile device’s settings, turn Bluetooth
switch on.
NOTE
Even if the devices list on the mobile device shows “FS-1-WL” or “FS-1-WL+”, don’t tap these.
3. Press the FS-1-WL’s [Bluetooth] (Smartphone/PC)
button.
The unit enters pairing mode, and the Bluetooth indicator blinks blue.
* If the devices do not pair after one minute has
passed, pairing mode is automatically canceled. To disconnect, long-press the [Bluetooth] (Smartphone/PC) button.

4. Launch the “FS-1-WL Editor” app that you
installed on your mobile device.
5. Tap [Bluetooth MIDI DEVICE] that appears on the
app you launched, and turn location data on.
* Note that the FS-1-WL Editor does not use
location data.
6. Tap “FS-1-WL”.
On the mobile device screen, verify that “*” is shown at the upper right of FS-1-WL. The Bluetooth indicator on the FS-1-WL stops blinking and remains lit when pairing is nished.
* “FS-1-WL+” appears if the unit is already paired
to another device.
* If “FS-1-WL” is not shown, tap “SCAN” at the very
bottom of the Bluetooth Devices screen to scan again.
7. If “Bluetooth Pairing Request” appears, tap
“Pair”.
8. Tap the back button on your mobile device to
return to the previous screen.
9. Verify that “FS-1-WL” is shown for “CONNECT” on
the app.

Tap [OK] to start communication.

If You Can’t Connect

Check the following points.
Items to Check Cause/Action
Is Bluetooth activated on your mobile device?
Is the Bluetooth (Smartphone/PC) indicator on the FS-1-WL is blinking blue?
Is the Bluetooth (INSTRUMENT) indicator on the FS-1-WL is blinking white?
Is location data turned o?
Is the unit paired with “FS-1-WL” or “FS-1-WL+”?
Make sure that Bluetooth has been activated on your mobile device.
If the indicator is not blinking blue, the FS-1-WL is not in pairing mode. Press the [Bluetooth] (Smartphone/PC) button to make the indicator blink blue.
Use the [Bluetooth] (INSTRUMENT) button when you want to connect to an electronic musical instrument. Press the [Bluetooth] (Smartphone/PC) button to make the indicator blink blue.
Turn on the location data setting of your mobile device. As per the specications of Android OS (Android 6.0 and later), you need to turn location data on to enable Bluetooth.
When pairing, tap “FS-1-WL” in Bluetooth MIDI Device setting on the app, instead of Bluetooth setting on your mobile device. When you turn the Bluetooth switch of your mobile device on, “FS-1-WL” or “FS-1-WL+” might appear in the devices list, but you should not tap them. If you did accidentally tap them, follow the steps shown in “Quit all apps on your mobile device, and retry pairing” (p. 6).

If you checked the above points and took the appropriate measures but you still cannot connect, try the following.

connect, contact your dealer or a Roland customer service center.

Quit all apps on your mobile device, and retry pairing
Quit all apps that are running on your mobile device.
1. Tap the Android multitasking button and swipe
up on the app screen.
* The procedure for closing apps may dier
depending on your mobile device. Use the method that’s appropriate for your device to close the apps.
2. Tap the gear icon for FS-1-WL in “Paired devices”,
and tap “Unpair ”.
3. Turn the Bluetooth switch o.
* The procedure for unpairing described in step
2–3 may dier depending on your mobile device.
4. Start pairing again by following the steps in
“Connecting the FS-1-WL to FS-1-WL Editor (Android)” (p. 2).

Turn the mobile device and the FS-1-WL o and then on again
1. Turn o the mobile device and the FS-1-WL.
2. Wait for about 10 seconds and turn the power on
again.
3. Start pairing again by following the steps in
“Connecting the FS-1-WL to FS-1-WL Editor
(Android)” (p. 2).
* If you are still unable to connect with the app
even after taking these measures, please contact the Roland customer service center.

Connecting the FS-1-WL to FS-1-WL Editor (iOS)

1. Power-on the FS-1-WL unit and the mobile
device.
To edit MIDI information, power up the FS-1-WL in MIDI mode. To edit HID information, power up the FS-1-WL in HID mode.
2. In your mobile device’s settings, turn Bluetooth
switch on.
NOTE
Even if the devices list on the mobile device shows “FS-1-WL” or “FS-1-WL+”, don’t tap these.
3. Press the FS-1-WL’s [Bluetooth] (Smartphone/PC)
button.
The unit enters pairing mode, and the Bluetooth indicator blinks blue.
* If the devices do not pair after one minute has
passed, pairing mode is automatically canceled. To disconnect, long-press the [Bluetooth] (Smartphone/PC) button.

4. Launch the “FS-1-WL Editor” app that you
installed on your mobile device.
5. Tap [Bluetooth MIDI DEVICE] that appears on the
app you launched.
6. Tap “FS-1-WL”.
The FS-1-WL connection in the list on the app displays as “Connected”. The Bluetooth indicator on the FS-1-WL stops blinking and remains lit when pairing is nished.
* “FS-1-WL+” appears if the unit is already paired
to another device.
* If the Bluetooth indicator on the FS-1-WL is not
blinking blue, press the [Bluetooth] button once more to make it do so.
7. If “Bluetooth Pairing Request” appears, tap
“Pair”.
8. Tap [ÍBack] to return to the previous screen.
9. Verify that “FS-1-WL” is shown for “CONNECT” on
the app.

Tap [OK] to start communication.

If You Can’t Connect

Check the following points.

Is Bluetooth activated on your mobile device?

Is the Bluetooth (INSTRUMENT) indicator on the FS-1-WL is blinking white?

Make sure that Bluetooth has been activated on your mobile device.

Quit all apps on your mobile device, and retry pairing
Quit all apps that are running on your mobile device.
1. Double-click the home button, and swipe up on
the app screen.
* The procedure for closing apps may dier
depending on your mobile device. Use the method that’s appropriate for your device to close the apps.
2. Long-press the [Bluetooth] (Smartphone/PC)
button on the FS-1-WL to make the indicator go dark.
3. Turn the Bluetooth switch o.
The procedure for step 2–3 results in unpairing.
4. Start pairing again by following the steps in
“Connecting the FS-1-WL to FS-1-WL Editor (iOS)” (p. 8).

1. Turn o the mobile device and the FS-1-WL.
2. Wait for about 10 seconds and turn the power on
again.
3. Start pairing again by following the steps in
“Connecting the FS-1-WL to FS-1-WL Editor (iOS)” (p. 8).
* If you are still unable to connect with the app
even after taking these measures, please contact the Roland customer service center.
Unpairing
1. With the Bluetooth indicator on the FS-1-WL lit
up blue, hold down the [Bluetooth] button to make the indicator blink blue.
2. Turn the Bluetooth switch o.

Connecting the FS-1-WL to a Computer

1. Connect the FS-1-WL to your computer with a USB
cable, and turn on the FS-1-WL.
To edit MIDI information, power up the FS-1-WL in MIDI mode. To edit HID information, power up the FS-1-WL in HID mode.
2. Launch the “FS-1-WL Editor” app that’s installed
on your computer.
3. Select “FS-1-WL USB-MIDI” from the DEVICE
pulldown menu, and click “OK”.

Top Screen (MIDI Mode)

Shows the MIDI settings screen for messages output to the device connected via Bluetooth.
Shows the MIDI settings screen for messages output to USB.
Shows the LIBRARIAN

* When this is set to “PC” or “PC+CC”, only
the trigger signal for “on” is output.

The setting turns on (ON VALUE)/o (OFF VALUE) each time you press a pedal switch.

When MODE is set to “PC” or “PC+CC”, this acts as a momentary switch.
The setting is on (ON VALUE) while you hold down the pedal switch, and o (OFF VALUE) when you release it.

This sets the MIDI channel that is output from the FS-1-WL pedal switches (L–R) and from the footswitch that’s connected to the FS-1-WL. To output using the MIDI channel set in TOTAL (p. 16), set this to “TX CH”.
This sets the MIDI PC number that is output from the FS-1-WL pedal switches (L–R) and from the footswitch that’s connected to the FS-1-WL.
Sets the value for the bank select MSB.
Sets the value for the bank select LSB.
Sets the minimum value that’s output when the expression pedal is operated.

LIBRARIAN
You can store up to 30 MIDI settings in the FS-1-WL Editor.
Parameter Explanation
+CREATE LIVESET
LIVESET NAME Adds a name to the liveset.
EDIT Lets you copy and delete livesets.
* You cannot edit any other part of the liveset
besides the name. To save the MIDI settings you’ve edited, create a new liveset.
* When connecting with FS-1-WL, the software
keyboard is hidden from display of your iPhone and iPad. Each time you click the [Bluetooth] (Smartphone/PC) button to toggle the software keyboard between visible and hidden.
The MIDI settings for the FS-1-WL are stored as a liveset.
Lets you rename the liveset (RENAME) or restore the settings to the FS-1-WL (RESTORE).

Top Screen (HID Mode)

Shows the HID settings for messages output to the device connected via Bluetooth.
* HID signals are only output via Bluetooth, and are not
output via USB.

You can save three groups of settings (called “memories”) to the FS-1-WL.

Selecting a Memory
1. Press and hold down a pedal switch to turn the
power on and set the unit to HID mode.
