Package Contents
Before using your Joybook R31 for the first time, please check if you have all the items with you. For details about what should be included in the package, refer to the package contents label on the accessory box. If any of the items are missing or appear to be damaged, contact your dealer. Save the packaging in case you need to ship your Joybook for service.
Getting Your Joybook Ready for Use
1. Installing the battery
Turn your Joybook upside down and put it on a soft clean cloth. With the label side of the battery facing up, slide it gently into the battery compartment until it snaps into place. Move the release latch to the left as shown to lock the battery into place.
2. Connecting the power
• Connect the power cord to the power adapter.
• Connect the power adapter to the power socket on your Joybook.
• Connect the power cord to a wall outlet and start charging the battery.
The power systems and plug types might vary depending on your country/region.

When the battery is being chargd, the battery indicator lights up in amber. When the battery is fully charged, the light turns into green.
For details about the colors and meanings of the indicators, refer to the figures in Chapter 1 “Touring Your Joybook” on page 6.
3. Opening your Joybook
To open your Joybook, slide the latch to the right, and then lift the lid up.
4. Performing initial setup
Press the power button to start up your Joybook, and then follow the onscreen instructions to complete the initial Windows XP setup.

Expanding the Capabilities of Your Joybook
Connect an external display device (such as a monitor or projector) to the VGA port of your Joybook.
Connect USB peripherals to the USB port of your Joybook.
Connect a telephone line to the modem port of your Joybook and dial-up to the Internet.
Access local area network (LAN) by connecting a network cable to the LAN port of your Joybook.

Use various PC cards on the market by inserting one into the PC card slot of your Joybook.
Connect an earphone or microphone to the earphone or microphone jack to out­put or record sounds.

Use the optical drive to access data on various kinds of discs or enjoy DVD/VCD movies.
Output video images on your Joybook to a TV or AV device by connecting it to the S-Video socket on your Joybook.

Touring Your Joybook
Depending on the model of your Joybook, the appearance may be different from those shown in this manual.
M Speakers
Generates sounds from Joybook.
N Power Button
Turns Joybook on or off.
O Keyboard
Allows you to input data as well as access various special functions.
P Touch Pad
You can use the touch pad to conveniently control the cursor on the screen.
To move the cursor, gently move your finger on the touch pad. The cursor will move
accordingly.
Tap on the touch pad once to execute the same action as clicking on the left button of a

mouse.
Tap twice to execute the same action as double-clicking.

Indicator Lights
M Optical Drive Activity Indicator
Flashes green when Joybook is accessing data on the disc in the DVD-ROM/Combo/DVD-Dual drive.
N Hard Disk Drive Activity Indicator
Flashes green when Joybook is accessing data in the hard disk drive.
O Num Lock Indicator
Lights up in green when the Num Lock function is activated. For details, refer to "Function Hotkeys" on page 11.

P Caps Lock Indicator
Lights up in green when the Caps Lock function is activated.
Q Scroll Lock Indicator
Lights up in green when the Scroll Lock function is activated. For details, refer to "Function Hotkeys" on page 11.
R Wireless Network Indicator
Lights up in green when Joybook is ready for wireless network connection. (This function works only if an optional Mini PCI wireless network card is installed.)
S Power Indicator
Lights up in green when Joybook power is on.
Flashes green when Joybook is in Standby mode.
T Battery Indicator
Lights up in green when the battery is fully charged and connected to AC power.
Lights up in amber when the battery is being charged.
Flashes red when the battery is running low.

Allows Joybook to outputs video signals to a television set or VCR via an S-Video cable.
N USB 2.0 Port
For connecting peripherals such as mice, digital cameras and MP3 players that use the USB interface.
O Earphone/SPDIF Audio Out-
put Jack Connects to various audio devices, such as earphones or external speakers for output­ting sounds and voices from Joybook.
P Microphone Input Jack
Connects to a microphone for recording sounds and voices.
Q Ventilation Holes
For dissipating heat and keeping Joybook at an optimal temperature.
R Modem Port
Accepts an analog telephone line for use with the internal modem.
S Ethernet Port
Allows Joybook to connect to an 10/ 100Base-TX Ethernet network.
T PC Card Expansion Slot
This slot accepts one Type-II PC card. You can use it and various PC Cards on the market to further expand the capabilities of your Joybook.
Insert the PC Card into the slot following the direction indicated on the card and complete related driver set­tings according to the documentation of the card.
U PC Card Ejection Button
Before ejecting a PC card:
1. Quit all PC Card applications and shut down all PC card functions.
2. Push in, then release the PC card eject button, caus­ing it to pop out.
3. When the button has popped out, push it in again to eject the PC card.

M DVD-ROM/Combo/DVD-Dual drive (Optional)
Supports multi-functional optical module for reading music CDs, VCDs and DVDs or burning CD-R/CD-RW or DVD+R/DVD+RW/DVD-RAM (optional) discs. Discs can be inserted/ejected by pressing the small ejection button on the drive.
If you wish to open the disc tray when your Joybook power is off, or it can't be opened using the ejection button, insert a pointed object into
the tray ejection hole next to the ejection button to force open the disc tray.

Accommodates the CPU and memory slot of Joybook. There is also a Mini PCI slot for using an optional Mini PCI card. Depending on your model, a Mini PCI wireless network card may have been pre-installed.

Function Hotkeys
You can use the function hotkeys to access commonly used functions or make quick settings. To use the hotkeys, press and hold the Fn (Function) key at the lower left corner of the keyboard, and then press the desired hotkey.
Depending on the area where your Joybook is purchased, the keyboard may be different from that shown in this section.
Fn + F1 Switches the wireless network radio on
and off. Upon booting Joybook, default setting is off.
Fn + F3 Decreases speaker volume. F
Fn + F4 Increases speaker volume. F
Fn + F5 Switches display between the screen and
an external monitor, or allows simultaneous display.
If the display mode is set to 256 colors or lower, or in DOS mode, there will be
only two modes available: CRT only and LCD & CRT.
Fn + F11 Switches the screen on or off.
Fn + F12 Serves as the standby or hibernate button
Fn + F6 Decreases screen brightness. FFn +

Activates or deactivates the numeric keypad integrated in the keyboard (indicated by the light gray shade in the illustration above).
n + F7 Increases screen brightness.
n + F10 Activates or deactivates the speakers. FFn + ScrLk Activates or deactivates the scroll lock func-
tion. When activated, the screen moves one line up or down when you press the up or down arrow key (K, L).
