Joybook Models Covered by This
Manual
This manual contains the information about the following Joybook models:
• Joybook R31 series
Please note that the actual hardware or software capabilities will vary according to
the model you purchased. To determine your Joybook model, please refer to the label
on the packing box, or the printing on your Joybook.
Before using your Joybook R31 for the first time, please check if you have all the
items with you. For details about what should be included in the package, refer to
the package contents label on the accessory box. If any of the items are missing or
appear to be damaged, contact your dealer. Save the packaging in case you need to
ship your Joybook for service.
Getting Your Joybook Ready for Use
1.Installing the battery
Turn your Joybook upside down and put it on a soft clean cloth. With the label
side of the battery facing up, slide it gently into the battery compartment until it
snaps into place. Move the release latch to the left as shown to lock the battery into
place.
2.Connecting the power
• Connect the power cord to the power adapter.
• Connect the power adapter to the power socket on your Joybook.
• Connect the power cord to a wall outlet and start charging the battery.
The power systems and plug types might vary depending on your country/region.
Flashes green when Joybook is accessing data on the disc in the DVD-ROM/Combo/DVD-Dual drive.
NHard Disk Drive Activity Indicator
Flashes green when Joybook is accessing data in the hard disk drive.
ONum Lock Indicator
Lights up in green when the Num Lock function is activated. For details, refer to "Function Hotkeys" on page 11.

PCaps Lock Indicator
Lights up in green when the Caps Lock function is activated.
Q Scroll Lock Indicator
Lights up in green when the Scroll Lock function is activated. For details, refer to "Function Hotkeys" on page 11.
RWireless Network Indicator
Lights up in green when Joybook is ready for wireless network connection. (This function works only if an optional
Mini PCI wireless network card is installed.)
SPower Indicator
• Lights up in green when Joybook power is on.
• Flashes green when Joybook is in Standby mode.
TBattery Indicator
• Lights up in green when the battery is fully charged and connected to AC power.
• Lights up in amber when the battery is being charged.
Allows Joybook to outputs video signals to
a television set or VCR via an S-Video
cable.
N USB 2.0 Port
For connecting peripherals such as mice,
digital cameras and MP3 players that use
the USB interface.
O Earphone/SPDIF Audio Out-
put Jack
Connects to various audio devices, such as
earphones or external speakers for outputting sounds and voices from Joybook.
P Microphone Input Jack
Connects to a microphone for recording
sounds and voices.
Q Ventilation Holes
For dissipating heat and keeping Joybook at
an optimal temperature.
R Modem Port
Accepts an analog telephone line for use
with the internal modem.
S Ethernet Port
Allows Joybook to connect to an 10/
100Base-TX Ethernet network.
T PC Card Expansion Slot
This slot accepts one Type-II PC card. You can use it
and various PC Cards on the market to further expand
the capabilities of your Joybook.
Insert the PC Card into the slot following the direction
indicated on the card and complete related driver settings according to the documentation of the card.
U PC Card Ejection Button
Before ejecting a PC card:
1. Quit all PC Card applications and shut down all PC
card functions.
2. Push in, then release the PC card eject button, causing it to pop out.
3. When the button has popped out, push it in again to
eject the PC card.
Supports multi-functional optical module for reading music CDs, VCDs
and DVDs or burning CD-R/CD-RW or DVD+R/DVD+RW/DVD-RAM
(optional) discs. Discs can be inserted/ejected by pressing the small ejection
button on the drive.
If you wish to open the disc tray when your Joybook power is off, or it
can't be opened using the ejection button, insert a pointed object into
the tray ejection hole next to the ejection button to force open the disc
tray.

P Battery Retainer B
Secures the battery in place.
Q Mini PCI Slot, Memory Expansion Slot and CPU Compartment
Accommodates the CPU and memory slot of Joybook. There is also a
Mini PCI slot for using an optional Mini PCI card. Depending on your
model, a Mini PCI wireless network card may have been pre-installed.
You can use the function hotkeys to access commonly used functions or make quick settings. To use the hotkeys, press and hold the Fn (Function) key at the lower left corner
of the keyboard, and then press the desired hotkey.
Depending on the area where your Joybook is purchased, the keyboard may be different from that shown in this section.
Fn + F1 Switches the wireless network radio on
and off. Upon booting Joybook,
default setting is off.
Fn + F3 Decreases speaker volume.F
Fn + F4 Increases speaker volume.F
Fn + F5 Switches display between the screen and
an external monitor, or allows simultaneous
display.
If the display mode is set to 256 colors
or lower, or in DOS mode, there will be
only two modes available: CRT only
and LCD & CRT.
Fn + F11 Switches the screen on or off.
Fn + F12 Serves as the standby or hibernate button
Fn + F6 Decreases screen brightness.FFn +
NumLk
Activates or deactivates the numeric keypad
integrated in the keyboard (indicated by the
light gray shade in the illustration above).
n + F7 Increases screen brightness.
n + F10 Activates or deactivates the speakers.FFn + ScrLk Activates or deactivates the scroll lock func-
tion. When activated, the screen moves one
line up or down when you press the up or
down arrow key (K, L).
