You should also check the appropriate port link LED on the hub or switch to be sure that it is also ON.
4. If you will be using an SNMP management program to manage the media converter, go to “Loading the MIB File” for further instructions. Otherwise, proceed to Chapter 4.

Loading the MIB File

If you intend to manage the media converter from a management station using an SNMP management program, you need to load the MIB file onto the management station.
Note
The MIB file is available from the Allied Telesyn web site at www.alliedtelesyn.com.
Downloading the MIB file requires that you use a MIB compiler to compile the file. You only need to load the MIB file once on a management station, regardless of the number of AT-MCF Series Media Converters on your network. To load the MIB file onto a management station, follow the instructions included with your MIB compiler.
12

Chapter 4

Managing a Multichannel Media Converter

After installing an AT-MCM02 Management Module, you can manage an AT-MCF Series Media Converter in one of three ways. They are:
RS-232 PortTelnet ProgramSNMP Management Program

RS-232 Port

You can manage the media converter through the RS-232 port by connecting to a terminal or a PC with a terminal emulation program using the control cable. Configure the terminal or terminal emulation program to the following settings:
Baud rate: 38400Parity: NoneStart bits: 1Stop bits: 1Flow control: noneEmulator: VT100
To start a management session, you must login. The login name is manager and the password is ati. (The login name and password are case sensitive.) Once you have logged in, the “>” command prompt is displayed. For information on the commands, refer to the section “Management Commands” on page 15.
13

Telnet Application Protocol

Telnet allows you to configure the AT-MCM02 Management Module from a local or remote workstation on your network. To manage the media converter with Telnet, the media converter must already have an IP address and subnet mask assigned. Refer to “SET IP INTERFACE Command” on page 16 for instructions on assigning an IP address and subnet mask. You will also need to connect one of the Management ports on the media converter to the network or directly to the workstation. Refer to “Cabling the Management Module” on page 11 for further instructions.
A Telnet management session on a media converter is similar to starting a session from the RS-232 port. You first login by entering the login name manager and the password ati. (The login name and password are case sensitive.) Once you have logged in, the “>” command prompt is displayed. For information on the commands, refer to the section “Management Commands” on page 15.
Note
You cannot have both a RS-232 management session and a Telnet management session running at the same time on a media converter. The management module will only allow one management session at a time.

SNMP Management Program

Another method for managing a media converter is with an SNMP management program from a workstation on your network. This management method requires that you assign the media converter an IP address, as explained earlier in this chapter, and that you connect the management ports on the media converter to the network or directly to a management workstation, as explained in “Configuring the Management Module” on page
9. Finally, you must load the MIB objects onto the workstation, as explained
in “Loading the MIB File” on page 12.
Once the MIB objects have been loaded on the workstation, you can use your SNMP management program to examine the values for the objects on the media converter. For instructions on using your SNMP program, refer to the documentation that came with the program.

The AT-MCM02 has two commands for setting and viewing the system name, location and contact. The commands are:
SET SYSTEMSHOW SYSTEM

SET SYSTEM Comman d

This command allows you to specify a name for the system. Assigning names to the media converters can make it easier for you to identify the individual units in your network. The media converter name is displayed as part of the “>” command prompt whenever you manage the device through the RS-232 port or when using Telnet. You can also specify the location of a device and the name of the network manager responsible for managing the unit.
Format:
SET SYSTEM NAME=”name” LOCATION=”location” CONTACT=”contact
Variables:
name: Specifies a name (one word up to 50 characters) for the media converter.
location: Specifies the location (one word up to 50 characters) of the media converter.
contact: Specifies the name (one word up to 50 characters) of the network administrator responsible for managing the media converter.
17
Examples:
The following example assigns the media converter the name of “MC112Sales,” and gives its location and contact as “BuildingFour” and “JohnSmith,” respectively.
SET SYSTEM NAME=”MC112Sales” LOCATION=”BuildingFour” CONTACT=”JohnSmith”
You can also set the information individually. The following example sets just the location variable:
SET SYSTEM LOCATION=”FifthFloor”

SHOW SYSTEM Command

This command displays the name, location, and contact of the media converter.
Format:
SHOW SYSTEM

SNMP Commands

The AT-MCM02 management module provides several commands for setting and displaying the SNMP community strings on the media converter. The commands are:

Variables:
SetString: Specifies the Set community string for the media converter. GetString: Specifies the Get community string for the media converter. TrapString: Specifies the Trap community string of the management
station to receive traps from the media converter.
Examples:
The following command sets the Get string to public, the Set string to private, and the Trap string to trap:
SET SNMP COMMUNITY GET=public SET=private TRAP=trap You can also set the community strings individually. The following
example sets the Get string to Restricted: SET SNMP COMMUNITY GET=restricted

SET SNMP MANAGER Command

This command is used to specify the IP address of a management station that is to receive traps from the media converter.
Format:
SET SNMP MANAGER=IPAddress
Variable:
IPAddress: Specifies the IP address of the management station to receive traps.
Example:
The following example specifies the IP address of the management station as 192.10.10.10:
SET SNMP MANAGER=192.10.10.10
19

SHOW SNMP Command

This command displays the current Set, Get, and Trap community strings on the media converter. This command also displays the IP address of the management station currently assigned to receive traps from the media converter.
Format:
SHOW SNMP

MC Commands

The MC commands are used to start and stop link tests on the channels on the media converter and to reset channels. The commands are:
SHOW MC CHANNELSET MC MODERESET MC CHANNEL

SHOW MC CHANNEL Command

This command displays the status of the twisted pair and fiber optic ports of the individual channels on the media converter. The information includes whether a link exists on the ports, whether there is activity on the ports, and whether the channel is performing a link test. This command also displays the operating temperature of the unit.
Format:
SHOW MC CHANNEL=n
Variable:
n: Specifies the number of the channel. For an AT-MCF06 or AT-MCF106 media converter, the value can be 1 to 6. Fo r an AT-MCF12 or AT-MCF112 media converter, the value can be 1 to 12.
Example:
The following example displays the status of all the ports on the media converter:
20
AT-MCM02 Management Module Installation Guide
SHOW MC To display the status of just one port, use the CHANNEL variable. For
example, the following command displays the status of the ports in channel 4:
SHOW MC CHANNEL=4 The TP Link and FO Link columns indicate whether the twisted pair and
fiber optic ports have a valid connection to the end nodes connected to the ports. The ON status indicates the presence of a valid link while OFF indicates the absence of a link. The TP Act and FO Act columns indicate if there is any activity on the ports. The Test column indicates whether the channels are performing a link test, indicated by “Enable,” or are in the normal operating mode, indicated by “Disable.”

SET MC MODE Command

This command allows you to override the Link Test switch on the front panel of the media converter and either start or stop a link test on the channels of the unit.
Note
A link test on an AT-MCF06 or AT-MCF12 media converter should be performed with caution. The media converter will not pass network traffic when performing a link test.
Format:
SET MC MODE=state CHANNELS=row
Variables:
state: Starts or stops a link test. Possible values are: TEST - Starts a link test. NORMAL - Stops a link test. row: Specifies the channels on which to start or stop a link test. Possible
values are: 1TO6 - Starts or stops a link test on channels 1 to 6. 7TO12 - Starts or stops a link test on channels 7 to 12.
21
Examples:
The following example starts a link test on all the channels on the unit: SET MC MODE=TEST If you are managing an AT-MCF106 or AT-MCF112 media converter, you
can specify a specific row of converters on which to start or stop a link test rather than all channels. The variables “1TO6” and “7TO12” allow you to specify the channel row. The following example starts a link test on channels 7 to 12:
SET MC MODE=TEST CHANNELS=7TO12
Note
You cannot perform a link test on an individual channel.
The following example stops a link test on all channels: SET MC MODE=NORMAL

RESET MC CHANNEL Command

This command can be used to reset the channels on a media converter.
Note
Resetting a media converter should be performed with caution. Network operations of the channels will be briefly interrupt during the reset process.
Format:
RESET MC CHANNELS=row
Parameter:
row: Specifies the row of channels on the media converters to reset. Possible values are:
1TO6 - Resets channels 1 to 6 7TO12 - Resets channels 7 to 12
22
AT-MCM02 Management Module Installation Guide
Examples:
The following example resets all of the channels on the media converter: RESET MC The reset process takes only a second or two, after which the media
converter is ready again for normal network operations. If you are managing an AT-MCF12 or AT-MCF112, you can use the
RESET MC CHANNEL command to reset a specific row of channels, rather than all the channels. The variables “1TO6” and “7TO12” allow you to specify which row to reset. The following example resets channels 7 to 12:
RESET MC CHANNELS=7TO12
Note
You cannot reset just one channel on a media converter. You must reset the entire unit or, in the case of an AT-MCF12 or AT-MCF112 unit, a row of channels.
