About this Guide

Thank you for purchasing the Yamaha

PortaSound PSS-140.
Reading this manual while playing your
new instrument is the best way to get
to know it and have fun right from the
start. The illustration on page2will help
you quickly locate all controls.

The Owner’s Guide first shows you how

to provide the PSS-140 with POWER,
using batteries or an adaptor. You can
then turn it on and start PLAYING THE
PSS-140 right away, adjusting VOLUME
as you wish and using VOICE SELECT
to choose any instrument sound you
want from among the 100 preset voices.
Before learning about the sophisticated
accompaniment features, listen to a
DEMONSTRATION. This will give you
an idea of the kind of music you will
soon be able to perform all by yourself.
The Guide goes on to explain the
RHYTHM Section and how to use the
AUTO ACCOMPANIMENT features and
The DRUM PAD. At the same time,
practical score examples will have you
playing in no time, showing you how to
make the most of your PSS-140 mu
sically.
The guide finally tells you how you can
use the HEADPHONES/AUX. OUT Jack
for private practicing or connection of
the PortaSound to your stereo system,
and gives you some hints for TAKING
CARE OF YOUR PORTASOUND to make
sure you will enjoy your new instrument

können das Keyboard dann einschalten

Yamaha PortaSound PSS-140.
La lectura de este manual mientras toca
su nuevo instrumento es la mejor forma
de llegar a conocerlo y disfrutarlo ya
desde el principio. La ilustración que
se encuentra en la página 2 le ayudará
a localizar rápidamente todos los con
troles.
El Manual del Propietario le indica en
primer lugar cómo ALIMENTAR el
PSS-140, con pilas o un adaptador.
Puede entonces encenderlo y comenzar
a TOCAR EL PSS-140 directamente,
ajustando el VOLUMEN como desee y
utilizando la selección de voces (VOICE
SELECT) para escoger cualquier sonido
instrumental que desee de entre las 100
voces preestablecidas.
Antes de conocer las refinadas propie
dades de acompañamiento, escuche una
DEMOSTRACION. Le dará una idea
del tipo de música que pronto podrá

POWER

Your PortaSound works on batteries,
or household current. Depending on
where you want to use it, buy six 1.5V
SUM-3 (“AA” size) alkaline batteries
and/or one of the AC adaptors listed
below.

Inserting Batteries

Turn the instrument upside-down and
remove the battery compartment lid by
pushing its tab In the direction of the
arrow embossed on the lid. Insert the
six batteries, making sure that their
poles are aligned as shown in the il
lustration below. Replace the lid. It
should lock in place with a click.

terien als auch mit Netzstrom betrieben

wollen, kaufen Sie bitte sechs 1,5V
Alkali-Batterien (SUM-3) und/oder

Einlegen der Batterien

Drehen Sie das Instrument um, und
nehmen Sie den Batteriefachdeckel auf
der Rückseite ab, indem Sie seine Zunge
in Richtung des Pfeils auf dem Deckel
drücken. Legen Sie die sechs Batterien
ein. Achten Sie dabei darauf, daß die
Batteriepole wie unten abgebildet aus
gerichtet sind. Setzen Sie den Batterie
fachdeckel danach wieder ein, und ver
gewissern Sie sich, daß er mit einem
Klicken einrastet.

ALIMENTATION

Votre PortaSound peut fonctionner soit
sur piles, soit sur secteur. Selon
l’endroit où vous désirez l’utiliser,
procurez-vous six piles alkalines 1,5V
SUM-3 (taille “AA") ou un des adap
tateurs repris ci-dessous.

Insertions des piles

Retournez l’appareil et ôtez le couver
cle du compartiment à piles en pous
sant l’onglet dans la direction indiquée
par la flèche. Insérez les six piles en
respectant l’alignement illustré
ci-dessous. Remettez le couvercle;
vous devriez entendre un déclic.

tración siguiente. Vuelva a colocar la
tapa. Deberá encajarse con un leve
chasquido.

Using AC Power Adaptors

Household current;

When you want to connect your Porta­Sound to a wall socket, buy one of these
Yamaha Power Adaptor models: PA-1,
PA-1B, or PA-3. No other adaptor can
be used, so be sure to ask for the right
kind.
Plug the adaptor into a convenient wall
socket and its connector into the DC
9-12V IN terminal 0 on the back of
your PortaSound as shown.

Wenn Sie Ihr PortaSound an eine
Wandsteckdose anschließen wollen,
kaufen Sie bitte eines der folgenden
Yamaha Netzadapter-Modelle: PA-1,
PA-IB oder PA-3. Andere Adapter

PLAYING THE PSS-140 SPIELEN

Slide the POWER switch O toward the
right to the ON position. You can now
play the keyboard of your new instru
ment.
Up to six keys may be pressed at the
same time — in other words, the
PSS-140 is 6-voice polyphonic. If you
play more than six keys simul
taneously, only the last six you touched
will sound.

Be sure to turn your PortaSound off
again by sliding the POWER switch O
back to OFF after you have finished
playing. This will save battery power.

When the PortaSound is turned on, vo

ond-highest level.

The PSS-140 gives you an amazing
selection of 100 different instrument
sounds, called “voices”. For quick ac
cess, their names (in green letters) are
listed in alphabetical order in the VOICE
BANK index ® along with a voice
number printed next to each name in
white.

You can choose any kind of instrument
tone you tike very easily;

Try out as many different voices as you

like to get a feel for the great variety
of sounds you can now play. Remember
that ail voices have two-digit numbers.

For instance, the voice BANJO has the

number 05, so you must press the “0”
VOICE SELECT button, then “5” and fi

nally ENTER to select it. The voice will
not change until you press ENTER.

(Only the last two VOICE SELECT but
tons you touched before ENTER will be

recognized.)

• ACCORDION 1 (voice 00) is auto
matically chosen when you turn on
your PortaSound.

Just to show you how important it is to
choose the right kind of voice for the

music you are playing, first try out the

following fanfare using an “unsuitable”

instrument sound, such as HAND BELL
(34) or VIOLIN 1 (94).

alter the playback speed by tapping the

The kind of professional sounding ac

companiment you heard with the dem
onstration song can played very easily
using the AUTO ACCOMPANIMENT

features. Two basic types are available:

A) The Single Finger Chord function lets

you play complete chords with just
one finger. The chords are only
heard while keys are pressed.

B) If you add a rhythm, the PortaSound

will then play a truly Automatic Ac
companiment consisting of drums,
bass and instrumental chords. These
parts match each other perfectly and
continue even if you lift your fingers
off the keyboard.

These features are controlled by the

cette section a un son différent de la
section mélodique, située à droite.

To get a certain major chord, all you

have to do is press the key corre

sponding to the basic note. For exam

ple, if you want to hear a C major chord,

MINOR CHORDS

Minor chords are produced by pressing

the basic note together with any black

key to the left of it. The example below

shows how to play a C minor chord.

Minor seventh chords are produced by

type of chord.

On the other hand, you can for example

change from a major to a minor chord

while pressing the basic note by addi
tionally playing any black key to the left.
This gives a different effect than you

would achieve by releasing the basic

Your new PortaSound is a fine musical
instrument — and should be treated as

such. Handle it with care and common
sense, and it will give you years of en
joyment.

• Location

Avoid exposure to direct sunlight or

other sources of heat. Never leave it

inside a car where it can get very hot.

Vibration, excessive dust, cold, low or

high humidity can also cause malfunc
tion.

• Handling

Avoid rough handling. Don’t drop or joit
the PortaSound as this can damage the

internal circuitry. Pressing too hard

on keys or controls may lead to mal
functions. When cords are plugged into
the rear panel jacks, pay particular at
tention not to apply excessive force to
them since this may damage the ter
