Voiir PortaSound has the foUouing features and functions:

• Authentic instmment sounds with 100 AWM (Advanced Wave Memory) Voices, utilizing
digital recordings of actual instruments,

Taking Care of Your PortaSound

Your PortaSound will give you years of plajdng pleasure, pro\nded you follow the
simple precautions given below.

• Avoid exposure to direct sunlight or other sources of heat. Never leave it inside a car where
it can get very hot. Also avoid highly humid or dusty places,

• Do not use your PortaSound close to television sets, radios or similar equipment since this
may cause interference noise in the other appliance.

• Protect your PortaSound from strong impact. Be careful not to drop it or place heavy
objects on it. Avoid applying excessive force to the controls and keys.

• After use, always turn off the POWER switch. When not using your PortaSound for long
periods, be sure to remove the batteries to avoid damage through battery leakage.

• Clean the exterior with a soft, dry cloth. To remove stubborn stains, use a slightly moistened
cloth. Never use alcohol, thinner, or other chemical solvents, since they will damage the

finish. Also, do not leave vinyl chloride material on the PortaSound for a long time, since it
may adhere to the exterior.

Pflege Ihres PortaSound

Ihr neues PortaSound wird Ihnen viele Jahre ungetrübten Spielvergnügens bereiten, wenn sie
die folgenden einfachen Vorsichtsmafiregeln beachten.

• Vermeiden Sie Orte, an denen das Instrument direkter Sonneneinstrahlung oder anderen Wärmequellen

ausgesetzt ist. Lassen Sie es niemals in einem Auto liegen, wo cs sehr heiß werden kann. Vermeiden Sie
ferner Orte mit hoher Luftfeuchtigkeit und Staubentwicklung.

• Spielen Sie Ihr PortaSound nicht in der Nähe eines Fernsehgeräts, eines Radios oder eines ähnlichen

Geräts, da das Instrument Störeinstrahiungen in dem anderen Gerät verursachen kann.

• Bewahren Sie Ihr PortaSound vor starken Stößen. Lassen Sie es nicht fallen, und stellen Sie keine

schweren Objelde darauf. Betätigen Sie die Tasten und Regler nicht stärker als notwendig.

• Schalten Sie das Instrument nach dem Spielen stets mit dem Ein- und Ausschalter (POWER) aus.

Le FortaSound PSS-12 possède les particularités et les fonctions énumérées «-dessous:

Précautions - Prendre soin du PortaSound

Le PortaSound est un excellent instrument de musique et doit être traité avec soin pour que
le plaisir de son utilisation se prolonge pendant plusieurs années.

• Ne ¡’exposez pas à la lumière directe du soleil, ne le conservez pas près d’une source de
chaleur ou dans une voiture si la température intérieure peut être élevée; évitez les emplacements
humides ou poussiéreux.

• N’employez pas le PortaSound près d’un récepteur de radio ou de téléviâon, ou de tout
autre appareil similaire, car cela peut entraûier un brouillage électromagnétique de ces
appareils.

• Evitez de soumettre le PortaSound à des chocs violents. Ne le laissez pas tomber, ne f>osez

• Essuyez l’extérieur au moyen d’un chiffon sec et doux. Pour éliminer les taches tenaces,
utilisez un chiffon humecté d’eau. N’utîlisez ni alcool, ni diluant, ni aucun solvant chimique
qui pourraient endommager la finition. Ne conservez pas la protection en chlorure de \1nyie car elle peut
adhérer irrémédiablement à la surface.

Cuidado del PortaSound

Si lo trata «m cuidado, su nuevo FortaSound le ofrecerá años de placer musical.

• Evite exponerlo directamente a la luz del soi y a otras fuentes de calor intenso. Jamás lo deje en el
interior de un automóvil donde puede calentarse mucho. Evite también lugares muy húmedos y
polvorientos.

• No use el PortaSound cerca de televisores, radios u otros aparatos similares que pxiectan ser sensibles a
las interferencias electromagnéticas.

• Proteja el PortaSound contra impactos fuertes. Tenga cuidado de no dejarlo caer y no coloque cbjetos
pesados sobre él. No aplique fuerza excesiva a ios controles y las teclas.

• Después de utilizar el PortaSound, ponga siempre el interruptor de alimentación (POWER) en OFF,
Cuando no vaya a utilizar el PortaSound durante mucho tiempo, quite las pilas para evitar posibles daños
por pérdida del electrólito.

Your PortaSound can run either on batteries (sold separately) or on normal
household current by using the optional Yamaha PA-l/lB/3 Power Adaptor.

[ Using an AC Power Adaptor

To connect your PortaSound to a wall socket, you will need the optionally available Yamaha
PA-l/lB/3 Power Adaptor. Use of other AC adaptors could result in damage to the
instrument, so be sure to ask for the right kind. Plug the adaptor into a convenient wall outlet
and its connector into the DC 10-12V IN jack on the back of your PortaSound.

Using Batteries

Inserting Batteries

Turn the instrument upside-down and remove the battery
compartment lid. Insert six 1.5-volt size “AA” batteries as
shown in the illustration, making sure that the positive and
negative terminals are properly aligned. Replace the lid.

When the Batteries Run Down

When the batteries run low and the battery voltage drops below a certain level, the PortaSound
may not sound or function properly. As soon as this happens, replace them with a complete
set of six new batteries. Never mix old and new or different types of batteries (e.g., alkaline
and manganese).

Instmment führen, daher unbedingt das richtige Netzteil verwenden. Schließen Sie das Netzteil an eine
Netzsteckdose und dessen Stecker an der Betriebsstrombuchse DC 10-12V IN an der Rückwand des
PortaSound an.

Verwendung von Batterien

Einlegen der Batterien

Drehen Sie das Instrument um, und nehmen Sic den
Batteriefachdeckel am Unterboden ab. Legen Sie sechs 1,5-V­Batterien des Typs “AA” ein, und achten Sie auf die korrekte
Ausrichtung der Batteriepole, wie in der Abbildung gezeigt, Setzen Sie
den Battericfachdeckcl wieder ein.

Bei schwachen Batterien

Bei schwachen Batterien und Abfallen der Batteriespannung unter einen bestimmten Wert erzeugt das
PortaSound nur einen verzerrten Klang oder zeigt sonstige Funktionsstörungen. Tauschen Sie alle sechs
Batterien gegen neue aus, sobald dieser Zustand auftritt. Verwenden Sie NIEMALS alte und neue Batterien
oder verschiedene Batterietypen {z.B. Alkali- und Manganbatterien) zusammen.

Accessory Jacks

Using Headphones

For private practicing and playing without disturbing others, connect a set of stereo head
phones to the rear panel HEADPHONES/AUX OUT jack. Sound from the built-in speaker
system is automatically cut off when you insert a headphone plug into this jack.

Connecting a Keyboard Amplifier or Stereo System

El PortaSoimd puede funcionar con pilas (se venden separadamente) o con la corriente de la
red mediante la conexión del adaptador de corriente opdonzü PA-l/lB/3 de Yamaha.

Empleo de un adaptador de CA

Para conectar el PortaSound a una toma de la red, se necesita el adaptador de corriente opcional PA-1/

lB/3 de Yamaha. El uso de otros adaptadores puede dañar el instrumento; por tanto, asegúrese de usar el

Utilisation de piles

Mise en place des piles

Retournez l’instrument et retirez le couvercle du logement des piles.
Introduisez six piles de 1,5 Voit, taille AA, comme le montre
rillustration. Respectez les polarités positive et négative indiquées.
Replacez le couvercle du logement.

Quand les piles sont usagées

Quand les piles sont usagées la tension fournie est inférieure au seuil permettant le fonctionnement normal

After making sure the PortaSound and any external devices are turned off, connect one end of
a stereo audio cable to the LINE IN or AUX IN jack(s) of the other device and the other end to
the HEADPHONES/AUX OUT jack of the PortaSound.

• The PERCUSSION Voice lets you play drum and percussion sounds from the keyboard. The specific
sounds are assigned to the keyboard as shown below.

Dual voices have two voices layered together for ensemble sounds.

' Split voices have two voices. Each is played from a different range of the keyboard (F^3 and below for

the lower voice, G3 and above the upper).
Harmony Voice (Country, Trio, Block, Duet) have an additional one-, two-, three- note harmony added
to the original monophonic voice. If several notes are played together, only the last note played will be
heard. When a Song or Jam Track Does not play back, the basic key for the harmony is always C.
When a Song or Jam Track plays back, the harmony changes according to the chord progression of the
Song or Jam Track.

' Sustain voices ejctend the sound by adding a natural, slow release.

Echo voices have an echo effect that adds delayed repeats to the original voice.

Playing Your PortaSound

Turning on the Power

Spielen auf Ihrem PortaSound

Set the POWER ON/OFF switch O to ON, to turn on the power of the PortaSound. When
the power is on, the Voice mode is automatically selected and the PIANO Voice is called up.

Selecting a Mode

Your PortaSound has two different operating modes: Voice and Song. Switch between the
two modes by pressing the VOICE/SONG Mode button O- (The LED of the selected mode
lights.)

In the Voice mode, you can select and play a Voice, In the Song mode, you can select and
play either a Song or a Jam Track pattern.

Selecting and Playing Voices in the

Voice Mode

The PortaSound features 25 different instrument Voices, each of them with three additional
Variations, Depending on the Voice selected, the Variations apply special harmonies, sustain
or echo effects to the Voice.

1 Make sure that the Voice mode is selected. Press the VOICE/SONG Mode

button O until the green VOICE LED lights.

Select the desired Voice with the VOICE/SONG Select buttons O*

F*ress the button corresponding to the appropriate section of Voices. For example, to
select the ORGAN Voice, press VOICE/SONG Select button below the section containing
“ORGAN” (the second button from the left).

To select other Voices in the same section, press the VOICE/SONG Select button of that
section repeatedly until you hear the sound of the desired Voice. (Each press of the
button plays a single note of the selected Voice, so that you can “audition” the Voice.)

To select a Variation of the Voice, press the

VARIATION button (the VOICE/SONG Select

button on the far right, in the VARIATION
section).

Auswahl eines Modus

Ihr PortaSound kann auf zwei verschiedenen Arten oder "Modi” gespielt werden: VOICE und SONG. Die
Umschaltung zwischen den beiden Modi erfolgt mit der Modus-Taste VOICE/SONG ©, (Die LED des
gewählten Modus leuchtet auf.)

Im VOICE-Modus können Sie eine Stimme wählen und spielen. Im Song-Modus können Sie entweder ein
Demonstrationsstück oder ein Jam Track Pattem wählen und spielen.

Das PortaSound bietet Zugriff auf 25 Instrumenten-Stimmen (VOICES), von denen jede wiederum drei
zusätzliche Variationen besitzt. Abhängig von der gewählten Stimme fügen die Variations-Stimmen der
Originalstimme besondere Harmonien, Sustain- oder Echo-Effekte hinzu.

Überzeugen Sie sich davon, daß der VOICE-Modus gewählt ist, Drücken Sie die VOICE/
SONG-Modustaste O, bis die grüne VOICE LED aufleuchtet.

Wählen Sie die gewünschte Stimme mit den VOICE/SONG-Wahltasten O- Drücken Sie
die Taste, die der gewünschten Stimmen-Sektion entspricht.

Wenn Sie zum Beispiel die Orgelstimme ORGAN wählen möchten, drücken Sie die VOICE/SONG­Wahltasten unterhalb der Sektion, die “ORGAN” enthält (die zweite Taste von links).

Um eine andere Stimme in derselben Sektion zu wählen, drücken Sic die VOiCE/SONG-Wahltasten
der betreffenden Sektion, bis Sie den Klang der gewünschten Stimme hören. (Bei jedem Druck auf die

Adjust the volume of the Voice by using the VOLUME buttons ©. Press the A button to
increase the volume or the T button to decrease it; hold down the appropriate button continu
ously to increase or decrease it.

Pressing the buttons also produces a “click” sound to indicate whether you are increasing the
volume (high click) or decreasing it (low click).

You can restore the original default volume setting by pressing both VOLUME buttons
simultaneously.

Bnstellen der Lautstäike

Sie können die Lautstärke des Stücks mit den VOLUME-Tasten o einstellen, Drücken Sie die Taste “A",
um die Lautstärke zu erhöhen, und um sie zu vermindern. Wenn Sie die betreffende Taste
kontinuierbch gedrückt halten, erhöht oder vermindert sich die Lautstärke kontinuierlich.

Bei jedem E>ruck auf die Tasten ertönt ein “Klick"-Ton der anzeigt, ob die Lautstärke erhöht (hohes Klicken)
oder vermindert wird (tiefes Klicken).

Sie können die werkseitig vorgesehene Normaleinstellung dadurch wiederherstellen, daß Sie beide

the Voice selected, fewer notes may be available.) This includes not only the Voices

you play too many notes at one time, some may not sound and/or others may be
canceited. (Refer to the Voice List at the end of this manual.)

Selecting and Haying Songs or Jam

Tracks in the Song Mode

A variety of Songs and special Jam Tracks have been recorded to your PortaSound to give you

a taste of what you can do with the instrument. The Songs are generally for your listening
enjoyment; however, you can also play along with them on the keyboard. Also, by using the

Minus One function, you can “mute” the original melody and play it manually on the keyboard
yourself. The Jam Track patterns in this mode let you “jam" or play along with a variety of
dynamic rhythm styles and chord changes.

To select and play one of the Songs or Jam Tracks;

J Make sure that the Song mode is selected. Press the VOICE/SONG Mode

button O until the red SONG LED Ughts.

Select the desired Song or Jam Track with the VOiCE/SONG Select buttons O-

Press the button corresponding to the appropriate section. For example, to select the

Song, “Beautiful Dreamer,” press VOICE/SONG Select button below the section

containing “Beautiful Dreamer” (the second button from the left).
Playback of the Song or Jam Track starts as soon as the button is pressed. Select other

Songs/Jam Tracks in the same section by pressing the VOICE/SONG Select button of
that section repeatedly until you hear the desired selection.

Note that the SONG LED flashes in time with the music.

Adjust the Voluine of the S(M^ or Jam Trade by udng the VOLUME buttems O.

(See “Adjusting the Volume” above for more information.)

You t:an also adjust the playback speed with the TEMPO buttons O.

Press the A button to increase the tempo or the ▼ button to decrease it; hold down the
appropriate button to continuously increase or decrease it. The tempo range is from 40

to 240 bpm (beats per minute), and is adjustable in steps of 4 bpm.

Pressing the buttons also produces a “click” sound to indicate whether you are increasing
the tempo (high click) or decreasing it (low dick).

You can restore the original default tempo setting of the Song or Jam Track by pressing
both TEMPO buttons simultaneously.

To stop playback, press the START/STOP button O

Auswahl und Spielen von Demonstrations­Stüdien oder Jam Tracks im SONG-Modus

ln Ihrem PortaSound sind verschiedene Demonstrations-Stücke und Jam Tracks aufgenommen, um Ihnen
einen Bndruck davon zu verschaffen, was Sie alles mit dem Instrum^t machen können. Die Demonstra
tions-Stücke im SONG-Modus sind prinzipiell zum Zuhören gedacht; Sie können jedoch auch selbst zu den
Stücken auf der Tastatur spielen. Mit Hilfe der Minus-One-Funktion können Sie den Melodie-Teil des Stücks
ausblenden (stummschalten), so daß Sie diesen selbst auf der Tastatur spielen können. Die Jam Track
Pattem dieses Modus ermöglichen es Ihnen, zu verschiedenen dynamischen Rhythmus-Stilrichtungen und
Akkordwechseln zu spielen.

So wählen Sie ein Demonstrationsstück oder ein Jam Track Pattem

1 überzeugen Sie sich davon, daß der SONG-Modus gewählt ist. Drücken Sie die VOICE/

SONG-Taste 0< bis die rote SONG LED aufleuchtet.
Verwenden Sie die VOICE/SONG-Wahhasten O, und wählen Sie das gewünschte

Demonstrationsstück oder Jam-Track.

Drücken Sie die Taste entsprechend der betreffenden Sektion. Wenn Sie z.B. das Demonstrations­Stück “Beautiful Dreamer” wählen möchten, drücken Sie die VOICE/SONG-Wahltaste unter der
Sektion, die “Beautiful Dreamer” enthält (die zweite Taste von links).

Die Wiedergabe des Demonstrations-Stücks oder Jam Tracks beginnt, sobald die Taste gedrückt ist.
Wählen Sie ein anderes Demonstrations-Stücks/Jam Track in derselben Sektion, indem Sie die
VOICE/SONG-Wahltaste der betreffenden Sektion wiederholt drücken, bis die gewünschte Wahl
ertönt.

Beachten Sie, daß die SONG LED im Takt zur Musik blinkt.

Stellen Sie die Lautstärke des Demonstrations-Stücks o^er Jam TratAs mit den
VOLUME-Tasten O ein.

Sie können auch die Wiedergabe-Geschunndigkeit mit den TEMPO-Tasten O ^nsteüen.

Drücken Sie die Taste “A”, um das Tempo zu erhöhen, und um sie zu vermindern. Wenn Sie die
betreffende Taste kontinuierlich gedrückt halten, erhöht oder vermindert sich das Tempo
kontinuierlich. Das Tempo reicht von 40 bis 240 Taktschlägen pro Minute und ist in Stufen von 4
Taktschlägen einstellbar.

Bei jedem Druck auf die Tasten ertönt ein “Klick' -Ton der anzeigt, cè das Tempo erhöht (hohes

La mémoire du PortaSound contient divers morceaux de musique et motifs de Jam Track qui d’une part
vous permettent de vous faire une idée des possibilités de l’instniment, et d’autre part peuvent servir de toile
de fond musicale pour accompagner une exécution. En effet, la fonction Minus One vous donne le mc^n
d’"effacer” la mélodie qu’il vous appartient alors d’exécuter. Dans ce mode de fonctionnement les motifs de
Jam Track vous permettent de faire un "bœuf" ou de jouer accompagné de différents rythmes et progres

sions d'accords.

Choix d’une œuvre ou d’un motif de Jam Track

J Veillez tout d’abord à sélectionner le mode Song. Appuyez sur le bouton VOICE/SONG

O jusqu’à ce que la dif>de rouge SONG s’éclaire.

Choisissez l’oeuvre ou le motif de Jam Track au moyen des boutons de sélection VOICE/

^ SONG O.

de las posibilidades del instrumento. Si bien las canciones están para que Ud. disfrute escuchándolas,
también puede tocar su instrumento con ellas como música de fondo. Además, utilizando la función Menos
Uno podrá eliminar la melodía original para tocarb Ud. mismo en su teclado. Los patrones JAM TRACK
de este modo le permiten tocar como en “jam sessions”, con una amplia variedad de dinámicos estilos
rítmicos y cambios de acordes.

Para seleccionar y reproducir una canción o patrón JAM TRACK;

J Asegúrese de que esté seleccionada la modalidad SONG. Pulse el botón VOlCE/SONG

O hasta que se ilumine el LED rojo SONG.

Seleccione el número de la canción o patrón JAM TRACK deseado por medio de los
botones selectores VOlCE/SONG O.

Pulse el botón correspondiente a la sección apropiada. Por ejemplo, para seleccionar b canción

“Beautiful Dreamer”, pulse el botón selector VOlCE/SONG que está por debajo de b sección donde

se encuentra dicha canción (el segundo botón de b izquierda).

La reproducción de b canción o patrón JAM TRACK seleccionado comienza tan pronto como se
pulsa el botón. Seleccione otras canciones/patrones dentro de b misma sección pulsando ei botón
selector VOlCE/SONG de dicha sección repetidamente hasta que se escuche b selección deseada.

Como podrá observarse, el LED SONG parpadea al son de la música.

Ajuste el volumen de la caneñón o patrón JAM TRACK usamlo los botones VOLUME 0.

También se puede ajustar la velocidad de reproducción (el tempo) utilizando los botones

Track pattern is selected, only the selected pattern repeats indefinitely.

Using the Minus One Feature

Minus One, as its name implies, takes away the melody part of the Song, allowing you to play
that part yourself. You can turn Minus One on before starting a Song, or do it even while a
Song is pla^ng. When used with one of the Jam Track patterns, Minus One cancels ail bass
and chord accompaniment, leaving only the basic rhythm of the Jam Track.

To use the Minus One function with the selected Song or Jam Track, press the MINUS ONE
button O (either before starting playback or during playback). (The LED above the button
lights.)

[ Using the One Touch Setting Feature

The One Touch Setting function works with the Minus One function and automatically selects
an appropriate Voice for playing the melody along with the Song you select. One Touch
Setting works the same way with Jam Track, automatically selecting an appropriate Voice.
To turn on the One Touch Setting function, press the ONE TOUCH SETTING button O
(The LED above the button lights.)
To turn the function off, press the button again.

Keep in mind that even with the One Touch Setting function on, there are some Songs
and Jam Track patterns which change the selected Voice in the middle of the Song or
pattern.

The AWM tone generation method uses multiple
recordings (samples) of an instrument across the range
of the keyboard; thus, ttie actual sound of the Voice
may be slightly different from note to note.

Utilisation du réglage par touche unique

Dépannage
