Power and Color Modes
Your new WD product has two power modes for the hard drive (Power On and Power Off) and three color modes for the light tubes
(Kaleidoscope, Fixed Color, Color Off). The hard drive operates only in Power On mode; the light tubes operate in both power modes.
The power and color modes described in this section determine which components are enabled on your new WD external hard drive:
! Hard drive and light tubes (Power On)
! Only the hard drive (Power On, Color Off)
! Only the light tubes (Power Off)
Power Modes
Power On
Press the Power button (Figure 2). The light tubes briefly illuminate white then go to the preset color mode. You may hear the drive spin up, and
the Power LED illuminates green. The Activity LED illuminates red when data is written to or read from the drive.
Note: Both the hard drive and the light tubes are enabled in Power On mode.
Power Off
To power off the drive without disconnecting it, press the Power button. The light tubes briefly illuminate white then go to the preset color mode.
You may hear the drive spin down, and the Power and Activity LEDs no longer illuminate.
Note: Only the light tubes are enabled in Power Off mode; the hard drive is disabled.
You need not power off the drive before shutting down your system; remaining data is transferred safely to the drive. To disconnect the drive, see
Section 5.
Color Modes
The current color mode setting for each power mode is stored in memory. For example, you may set Fixed Color while in Power On mode and
Kaleidoscope while in Power Off mode. Each time the power mode changes, the light tubes go to the last color mode setting for that power mode.
Press the Color Select button (Figure 2) at any time to change the current color mode.
Kaleidoscope
Slow
When the light tubes are in Fixed Color mode, press the Color Select button once to go to slow Kaleidoscope mode. The tubes slowly cycle

with the color that is displayed when the Color Select button is pressed. To choose a different color for Fixed Color mode, press the Color Select
button to go to Kaleidoscope mode, allow the light tubes to cycle through the color spectrum, and press the Color Select button again when the
chosen color is displayed.
