HOW TO USE THE ELLIPTICAL EXERCISER
H
OW TO MOVE AND LEVEL THE ELLIPTICAL
EXERCISER
To move the elliptical exerciser, stand in front of it, place one foot against one of the wheels, and firmly hold the upper end of the upright. Pull the upright until you can move the elliptical exerciser on the wheels. Carefully move the elliptical exerciser to the desired location and then lower it. CAUTION: To decrease
the risk of injury, do not attempt to move the ellip- tical exerciser over an uneven surface.
If the elliptical exerciser rocks slightly on your floor, turn one or both of the levelling feet under the front stabilizer until the rocking motion is eliminated.
HOW TO ADJUST THE HEIGHT OF THE UPPER BODY ARMS
The upper body arms can be adjusted to the height that is the most comfortable for you. Simply loosen the arm knobs, slide the upper body arms to the desired height, and then firmly tighten the arm knobs. Make sure that both upper body arms are at the same height.
H
OW TO EXERCISE ON THE ELLIPTICAL
EXERCISER
To mount the elliptical exerciser, firmly hold the upper body arms and carefully step onto the pedal that is in the lowest position. Next, step onto the other pedal. Push the pedals until they begin to move with a con- tinuous motion. Note: The pedal discs can turn in
either direction. It is recommended that you turn the pedal discs in the direction shown below; however, for variety, you can turn the pedal discs in the opposite direction.
To dismount the elliptical exerciser, allow the pedals to come to a complete stop. CAUTION: The elliptical
exerciser does not have a freewheel; the pedals will continue to move until the flywheel stops.
When the pedals are stationary, step off the highest pedal first. Then, step off the lowest pedal.

FEATURES OF THE CONSOLE
The console offers a selection of features designed to make your workouts more effective. When the manual mode of the console is selected, you can change the resistance of the pedals with the touch of a button. As you exercise, the console will provide continuous exer- cise feedback. You can even monitor your heart rate using the handgrip pulse sensor.
The console also offers a selection of preset programs. The two smart programs automatically change the resistance of the pedals and prompt you to increase or decrease your pedaling pace as they guide you through an effective workout.
The two calorie programs allow you to choose a calo- rie-burning goal for your workout. As you exercise, the console will count the calories that you burn until the goal is reached.
To track your walking exercise, the console also features the MyTracks StepCounter program that allows you to enter the number of steps that you plan to pedal, and counts down the steps as you exercise.
To use the manual mode, see page 12. To use a smart program, see page 13. To use a calorie pro- gram, see page 14. To use the MyTracks™ StepCounter program, see page 14.
Note: If there is a sheet of clear plastic on the face of the console, remove the plastic.

HOW TO USE THE MANUAL MODE
1. Press any button on the console or begin ped-
aling to turn on the console.
When the console is turned on, the display will light.
2. Select the manual mode.
Each time the console is turned on, the man- ual mode will be selected. If you have selected a program, reselect the manual mode by pressing either of the Smart Programs buttons repeatedly until the display shows 0:00.
3. Begin pedaling and change the resistance of
the pedals as desired.
As you pedal, change the resistance of the pedals by pressing the Resistance increase and decrease buttons. There are ten resistance levels. Note: After you press a button, it will take a moment for the pedals to reach the selected resistance level.
4. Monitor your progress with the display.
The upper section of the display will show the elapsed time and the distance (total number of revolutions) that you have ped- aled. The display will change from one number to the other every few seconds. Note: When a smart program is selected, the display will show the time remaining in the program instead of the elapsed time.
The section of the dis- play below the upper section will show your pedaling pace, in rev- olutions per minute (rpm).
The next section of the display will show the approximate num- ber of calories you have burned and the resistance level of the pedals. The display will change from one number to the other every few seconds. The display will
also show your heart rate when you use the hand- g
rip pulse sensor. Note: When a calorie program is selected, the display will show the number of calo- ries still to be burned instead of the number of calories you have burned.
The lower section of t
he display will show the total number of steps you have taken (one revolution equals two steps). Note: When the MyTracks StepCounter program is selected, the display will show the number of steps still to be taken instead of the number of steps you have taken.
5. Measure your heart rate if desired.
If there are sheets of clear plastic on the metal contacts on the handgrip pulse sensor, peel off the plastic.
Next, hold the hand- grip pulse sensor with your palms resting on the metal contacts. Avoid moving your
hands or gripping the contacts too tightly.
When your pulse is detected, a heart-shaped sym- bol will flash in the display each time your heart beats and then your heart rate will be shown. For the most accurate heart rate reading, hold the con- tacts for at least 15 seconds. Note: If you continue to hold the handgrip pulse sensor, the display will show your heart rate for up to 30 seconds. The display will then show your heart rate along with the other modes.
6. When you are finished exercising, the console will automatically turn off.
If the pedals are not moved for several seconds, the console will pause and the time will begin to flash in the display. If the pedals are not moved for a few minutes, the console will turn off and the display will be reset.

1. Press any button on the console or begin ped- aling to turn on the console.
When the console is turned on, the display will light.
2. Select a smart program.
To select a smart pro- gram, press either of the Smart Programs buttons. When a smart program is selected, the upper section of the display will show how long the pro- gram will last.
3. Begin pedaling to start the program.
Each program is divided into thirty one-minute periods. One resistance setting and one pace set- ting are programmed for each segment. Note: The same resistance setting and/or pace setting may be programmed for consecutive periods.
At the end of each period of the program, the resistance of the pedals will automatically change if a different resistance setting is programmed for the next period. Note: If the resistance level is too high or too low, you can change it by pressing the Resistance increase and decrease buttons. However, when the current period ends, the resis- tance level will automatically change if a different resistance setting is programmed for the next period.
As you exercise, the d
isplay will prompt you to keep your pedaling pace near the pace setting for the current period. When the word “faster appears in the display, increase your pace. W
hen the word slower appears, decrease your pace. When the center of the target flashes, main- tain your current pace.
IMPORTANT: The pace settings are intended only to provide motivation. Your actual pace may be slower than the pace settings. Make sure to exercise at a pace that is comfortable for you.
If you stop pedaling for several seconds, the time will begin to flash in the display. To restart the pro- gram, simply resume pedaling.
The program will continue until the display shows a time of 0:00. If you continue to pedal after the program is completed, the display will continue to show exercise feedback; however, the display will not show the elapsed time, until you select the manual mode or a new program.
4. Monitor your progress with the display.
See step 4 on page 12.
5. Measure your heart rate if desired.
See step 5 on page 12.

HANDGRIP PULSE SENSOR TROUBLESHOOTING
If the handgrip pulse sensor does not function proper- ly, make sure that your hands are positioned as described in step 5 on page 12. Be careful not to move your hands excessively or to squeeze the metal contacts too tightly. For optimal performance, clean the metal contacts using a soft cloth; never use alco-
hol, abrasives, or chemicals.
HOW TO ADJUST THE REED SWITCH
If the console does not display correct feedback, the reed switch should be adjusted. First, remove all of the screws from both shields. There are three sizes
of screws in the shieldsnote which size of screw you remove from each hole. Then, carefully remove
the shields.
Next, locate the Reed Switch (47). Turn the Flywheel (48) until the Magnet (53) is aligned with the Reed
Switch. Loosen, but do not remove, the indicated M4 x 16mm Screw (60). Slide the Reed Switch slight- ly closer to or away from the Magnet, and then r
etighten the Screw. Rock the Flywheel forward and back just enough that the Magnet passes the Reed Switch repeatedly. Repeat until the console displays correct feedback. When the Reed Switch is correctly adjusted, reattach the shields. Note: If you have ques- tions regarding which screw should be in which hole, see EXPLODED DRAWING B on page 19 and the PART LIST on page 17.
HOW TO ADJUST THE BELT
If you can feel the pedals slip while you are pedaling, even when the resistance of the pedals is at the high- est setting, the Belt (37) may need to be adjusted. First, remove all of the screws from both shields; there
are three sizes of screws in the shieldsnote which size of screw you remove from each hole.
Then, carefully remove the shields.
Next, loosen the M8 x 19mm Flat Head Bolt (61) and turn the Adjustment Screw (62) until the Belt (37) is tight. Once the Belt is tight, tighten the Flat Head Bolt. Then, reattach the shields. These guidelines will help you to plan your exercise program. For detailed exercise information, obtain a reputable book or consult your physician. Remember, proper nutrition and adequate rest are essential for successful results.
EXERCISE INTENSITY
Whether your goal is to burn fat or to strengthen your cardiovascular system, exercising at the proper inten- sity is the key to achieving results. You can use your heart rate as a guide to find the proper intensity level. The chart below shows recommended heart rates for fat burning and aerobic exercise.
To find the proper intensity level, find your age at the bottom of the chart (ages are rounded off to the near- est ten years). The three numbers listed above your age define your “training zone.” The lowest number is the heart rate for fat burning, the middle number is the heart rate for maximum fat burning, and the highest number is the heart rate for aerobic exercise.
Burning Fat—To burn fat effectively, you must exer- cise at a low intensity level for a sustained period of time. During the first few minutes of exercise, your body uses carbohydrate calories for energy. Only after the first few minutes of exercise does your body begin to use stored fat calories for energy. If your goal is to burn fat, adjust the intensity of your exercise until your heart rate is near the lowest number in your training zone. For maximum fat burning, exercise with your heart rate near the middle number in your training zone.
Aerobic Exercise—If your goal is to strengthen your cardiovascular system, you must perform aerobic exercise, which is activity that requires large amounts of oxygen for prolonged periods of time. For aerobic exercise, adjust the intensity of your exercise until your heart rate is near the highest number in your training zone.
WORKOUT GUIDELINES
Warming UpStart with 5 to 10 minutes of stretching
and light exercise. A warm-up increases your body temperature, heart rate, and circulation in preparation for exercise.
Training Zone Exercise—Exercise for 20 to 30 min- utes with your heart rate in your training zone. (During the first few weeks of your exercise program, do not keep your heart rate in your training zone for longer than 20 minutes.) Breathe regularly and deeply as you exercise–never hold your breath.
Cooling Down—Finish with 5 to 10 minutes of stretching. Stretching increases the flexibility of your muscles and helps to prevent post-exercise problems.
EXERCISE FREQUENCY
To maintain or improve your condition, complete three workouts each week, with at least one day of rest between workouts. After a few months of regular exer- cise, you may complete up to five workouts each week, if desired. Remember, the key to success is to make exercise a regular and enjoyable part of your everyday life.
EXERCISE GUIDELINES
WARNING: B
efore beginning this or any exercise program, consult your physician. This is especially important for persons over age 35 or persons with pre- existing health problems.
The pulse sensor is not a medical device. Various factors may affect the accuracy of heart rate readings. The pulse sensor is intended only as an exercise aid in determin- ing heart rate trends in general.
