Video Ophthalmoscope Set Up Procedure:
1. Set up the Welch Allyn Imaging and Illumination System per the instruction booklet included with the system.
This system will include a proximal camera cable assembly with a standard C-Mount interface.
2. Screw the Video Ophthalmoscope head (without power handle attached) onto the threaded interface on the head of
the camera cable assembly. To obtain proper video orientation, align the notch or arrow on the camera head with the
eyepiece of the scope. If necessary, loosen the knurled black adjustment ring on the bottom of the scope interface, and
rotate the scope as necessary to align the eyepiece with the notch or arrow on the camera head, then re-tighten the ring.
3. Attach the power handle to the Video Ophthalmoscope head. If it is difficult to access the rheostat button on the
power handle because of interference with the camera cable, disconnect the handle from the scope and rotate the
handle 180 degrees, then re-attach the handle to the ophthalmoscope.
4. Switch the Power button to the ON position on the Imaging and Illumination platform box.
5. Press the rheostat button on the power handle and rotate to increase light to desired level.
NOTE: The first time that the Video Ophthalmoscope is used with any Imaging and Illumination system, the
following Video Focus procedure must be completed to match the scope optics to the video camera. Once a scope and
imaging system are "focused" together, the user will only need to adjust the focus via the lens wheel of the scope for
each exam, and should not need to touch the video focus.
Video Focus Procedure
To optimize the clarity of video and directly viewed images, follow these steps:
1. Using the Lens Dial on the ophthalmoscope head, set the Diopter setting to the "0" position. Diopter setting can be
viewed through the small indicator window found on the back (physician)side of the Video Ophthalmoscope.
2. View a distant object (at least 15 feet away) through the eyepiece of the ophthalmoscope and adjust the lens
dial until it is in the best focus through the 'scope (not the monitor).
3. While keeping the unit aimed at the same object, view the image on the video monitor. Adjust the video focus
ring (located just beneath the eyepiece of the video ophthalmosocpe head) until it is in focus on the monitor.
If a user changes the video focus, you may need to repeat this 3-step Focus procedure to reset the scope optics to the
video camera. Since the polarizing filter removes a large amount of light, ensure that the the filter (located on the
front (patient) side of the Video Ophthalmoscope) is not engaged for the focusing steps. Use filter only when
excessive glare limits operation.
The CE mark on this device indicates it has been tested to and conforms with the provisions noted within the
93/42/EEC Medical Device Directive.
