• Description
The Portacal 1000 is a microprocessor based calibrator for milliamp and voltage signals. It combines signal source and signal measuring features for diagnostic testing of analogue current and voltage loops.
Operation
The Portacal 1000 has three basic operating modes:
voltage source, which simulates auxiliary powered transmitters with
proportional voltage outputs;
current source, which simulates auxiliary powered transmitters with
proportional current outputs;
current sink mode,
outputs.
which simulates 2-wire (loop powered) transmitter
17
In addition, it has four special functions:
1. Two wire test
monitors its output level.
2. Automatic ramp/step,
the values stored for the operating mode at a user defined interval.
3. External Voltage measurement,
signals
4. External Current measurement,
current signals
Stored values
For each output mode there are nine memory locations for your favourite calibration points. In addition, most commonly used values are available by pressing one key.
Continuous Ramp/Step function
You can set the Portacal 1000 to repeatedly ramp or step between up to nine stored values in any output mode with programmable time delay.
Error messages
The display will flash when the battery is low. It also shows the following messages:
SHrt - short circuit output for voltage outputs OPEn - indicates open circuit output for current outputs
-OL- - indicates that the output is overloaded
, which powers a loop powered transmitter and
which ramps or steps through a selection of

Function Selection
Press Ô and then Õ the display will show Fn=0 Choose a mode using the Ù key.
Press Ó to select. Note: to exit any mode press the Ò key.
1. Loop powered transmitter test mode
In this mode the Portacal 1000 provides power for, and measures the output from, the transmitter. Select Fn=1 for this function.
2. Automatic ramp/step mode
This mode is designed for remote testing, it allows you to set the Portacal 1000 to repeatedly ramp or step between stored values in any output mode with programmable time delay.
First select the mode required (voltage source, current source or 2-wire simulation).
Select Fn=2. Press Ó, the display will show nP=. Press Ó, the display will show the number of points.
Set this to the number you require using the Õ and the Ù key. Select the time delay in seconds (dL=) and step (StEP) or ramp
(rAnP) mode in the same way. When you press Ó to accept the values the INC and DEC LEDs will
toggle to indicate that the unit is in ramp mode.

3. External Voltage Measurement Mode
In this mode the Portacal 1000 measures external voltages. You can either display the measurement as a voltage or percentage. To display percentages you must set up upper and lower values for the measured range.
Select Fn=3. Press Ó, the display will show AbS or PEr for absolute value (volts) or
percentage. Select using Ù and accept using Ó.
If you selected absolute value mode the calibrator will now be displaying the measured voltage.
For percentage display the display will show InL=. Press Ó, the display will show the input span lower voltage.
Set this to the voltage you require using the Õ and the Ù key. Press Ó and the display will show I NH=. Press Ó, the display will show the input span upper voltage.
Set this to the voltage you require using the Õ and the Ù key. When you press Ó to accept the values the V, INC and DEC LEDs will
light to indicate that the unit is in external voltage measurement mode.
4. External Current measurement Mode
In this mode the Portacal 1000 measures external currents. It is identical to voltage measurement except you must select Fn=4.
In Current measurement mode the I, INC and DEC LEDs are all lit.

Calibration Jumper
• Calibration
Equipment Requirements
You will need:
• An accurate, 5 + 1/2 digit multimeter
• A suitable 24 V DC power supply
• An accurate current/voltage reference
• Suitable Phillips head screwdriver (for opening the case)
Keyboard operation
During calibration the keys function as follows:
Ó accepts that the output is at the required level. Note: always
allow about 10 s for the output to stabilise before accepting a value.
25
Ò switches operating modes. If you are adjusting a value you will
lose those changes.
Õ toggles between increment and decrement mode.
Ù, â and á adjust the output, á provides the finest adjustment.
Calibrate/Run mode selection jumper
Place the calibration jumper in the CAL position to start calibrating. You will have to open the case to select the jumper and normal precautions against ESD are essential. Take careful note of the position of the wires connecting the front and back of the case together.
