SAFETY NOTICE: Exposure to vibrations
through prolonged use of gasoline powered
handtools could cause blood vessel or nerve
damage in the fingers, hands, and joints of
people prone to circulation disorders or ab, normal swelling. Prolonged use in cold
weather has beenlinked toblood vessel dam-
age inotherwise healthy people. Ifsymptoms
occur such as numbness, pain, loss of
strength, change in skin color or texture, or loss of feeling in the fingers, hands, or joints,
discontinue the use of this tool and seek
medical attention. An anti vibration system
does not guarantee the avoidance of these
problems. Users who operate power toolson a continual and regular basis must monitor
closely their physical condition and the condi* tion ofthis tool.
SPECIAL NOTICE; This unit is equipped with a temperature limiting muffler and spark arrestinng screen which meets the require-
ments of California Codes 4442 and4443. All U.S. forest land and the states of California, Idaho, Maine, Minnesota, New Jersey, Ore*
gon, and Washington require by law that many internal combustion engines be
equippedwith aspark arresting screen, if you operatein a locale where such regulations ex*
ist, you are legally responsible for maintaining theoperating condition of these parts. Failure
to do so is aviolation of the law. Refer to the SERVICE section for maintenance of the muffler and spark arresting screen.

aWARNIN_: Muffler is very hot durtag
and after use. Do not touch the muffler or ab low combustible material such asdry grass or
fuel todo so.
BEFORE STARTING ENGINE
nWARNIN_: Be sure to read the fuel
information in the safety rules before you be- gin. Ifyou do not understand the safety rules,
do not attempt to fuel your unit. Call
1-800-554-6723.
FUELING ENGINE
aWARNIN_: Remove fuel cap slowly
when refueling.
This engine is certified to operate on un- leaded gasoline. Before operation, gasoline must be mixed with a good quality synthetic 2*cycle air-cooled engine oil designed to be
mixed at a ratio of 40:1. Poulan/Weed Eater brand synthetic oil is recommended. A 40:1
ratio is obtained by mixing 3.2ounces (95ml)
ofoil with t gallon (4 liters) of unleaded gaso,
line. DO NOT USE automotive oil or boatoil. These oils will cause engine damage. When
mixing fuel, follow instructions printed on oil
container. Once oil is added to gasoline,
shake container momentarily to assure that the fuel isthoroughly mixed. Atways read and follow the safety rules listed under HANDLE
FUEL WITH CAUTION.

Choke Lever Fuel Mix Fill Cap
PRIMER BULB
The PRIMER BULB removes airfrom thecar* buretor and fuel lines and fills them with fuel.
This allows you tostart the engine with fewer pulls on the starter rope. Activate the primer bulb by pressing it and allowing it to return to
its original position. THROTTLE TRIGGER The THROTi-LE TRIGGER controls engine
speed.Squeeze thetriggerf@full speedopera- tion; release itfor idle speed.
IMPORTANT
Experience indicatesthat alcohol blendedfueJs (called gasoho_or using ethanol or methanol)
can attractmoisturewhich leads to separation and formation of acids during storage. Acidic gas can damage the fuel system of an engine
while in storage. To avoid engine problems, empty the fuel system before storage for 30
days or longer.Drata theg_as tank,etar_theen- gineandlet it run untilthefuet linesand carbure- tor areempty. Usefresh fuel next season.Nev-
er use engine orcarburetor cleaner productsin thefuel tank or permanentdamagemay occur.
OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS IMPORTANT POINTS
Usethe minimum throttle speed necessary to effectively cut hedges for optimal hedge trimmer performance.
Never attempt to use this hedgetrimmer to cut hedges that have any branches with a

STARTING A FLOODED ENGINE
Flooded en_ginescan be started by placing
the ON/OFFswitch in the ONposition and the choke lever in the OFF CHOKE position and
engaging the throttle lock as directed in the STARTING A COLD ENGINE section; then,
pull the rope to clear the engine of excess
fuel. Starting could require pulling the starter

amWARNINL_: Ensure ON/OFF switch
is in the OFF position and disconnect the spark plug before performing maintenance
except for carburetor adjustments. GENERAL RECOMMENDATIONS
Thewarrantyon this unit does notcover items that have been sub ected to operator abuse or neg gence. To receve fu va ue from the
warranty, the operator must maintain unit as
instructed in this manual. Various adjust-
ments will need to be made periodically to
properly maintain your unit.

CHECK FOR DAMAGED OR WORN PARTS
Contact an authorized service dea_er for re*
placement of damaged or worn parts.
ON/OFF Switch - Ensure ON/OFF switch functionsproperly by movingthe switchtothe
OFF position. Make sure engine stops; then restart engine and continue.
FuelTank - Donot useunitif fueltank shows signs of damage or leaks.
INSPECT AND CLEAN UNIT AND
LABELS
Before and after each use, inspect corn*
plefe unit forloose or damaged parts. After
each use, clean the unit and labels using a damp cloth with a mild detergent.
Wipe off unit with a clean dry cloth.
CLEAN AIR FILTER
Air Filter Cover
Cleaning the air filter:
A dirty air filter decreases engine perform_ ance and increases fuel consumption and
harmful emissions. Always clean after every 5 hours of operation.
1. Clean the cover and the area around it to keep debris from falling intothecarburetor
chamber when the cover is removed.
2. Remove parts as illustrated.
NOTE: Do notclean filter in gasc_ineor other flammable sdvent. Doing so can create a fire
hazard or produce harmful evaperative emis- sions.
3. Wash thefilter in soap and water.
4. Allow filter to dry.
5. Add a fewdrops of oil to the filter; squeeze filter to distribute oil.
6. Replace parts.
INSPECT MUFFLER AND SPARK
ARRESTING SCREEN NOTE: THE SPARK ARRESTING SCREEN
ON THIS UNiT iS NOT SERVICEABLE. For normal homeowner use, the muffler and spark arresting screen will not require anyser-
vice. After 50 hours of use, we recommend that your muffler be replaced by an authorized
service dealer.
CARBURETOR ADJUSTMENT
WARNING: Keep others away when
making idle speed ad ustments. The blade will be moving during most of this procedure. Wear your protective equipment andobserve
all safety precautions. When making adjust- ments, use a screwdriver short enough to
keep your hands behind the handguard and away from the blade. After making adjust-
ments, the blade must notmove at idle speed. The carburetor has been carefully set atthe factory. Adjustments may benecessary if you
notice any of the following conditions:
Engine will not idle when the throttle is re- leased.
The blade moves at idle.
Keep others away when making idle speed adjustments. Make adjustments with the unit
resting on a level surface free of debris that can be caught in the hedge trimmer blade.
Serious in ury to the operator and others can occur f the carburetor s not propery ad-
justed. Keep all parts of your bcdy away from
the blade and muffler. Idle Speed Adjustment
AIlow engine,to idle.Ad'ust_ .speeduntil engine runswithout blade moving (idle too fast)or en-
gine stalling (idle speed too slow).
Turn idle speed screw clockwise to in-
crease engine speed if engine stalls ordies.
Turn idle speed screw counterclockwise to
decrease engine speed if the blade moves at idle.
