KNOW YOUR UNIT
S Read your instruction manual carefully until
you completely understand and can follow
all warnings and safety rules before operating the unit.
D Restrict unit to users who understand and
will follow all warnings and safety rules in
this manual and on the unit.
PLAN AHEAD
WARNING: Inspect area before start-
ing unit. Remove all debris and hard objects
such as rocks, glass, wire, etc. that can ricochet, be thrown, or otherwise cause injury or
damage during operation.
D Always wear eye protection when operating,
servicing, or performing maintenance on unit.
Wearing eye protection will help to prevent
brush or debris from being thrown or ricochet ing into eyes and face which can result in
blindness and/or serious injury. Eye protection should be marked Z87.
D Wear hearing protection when using this
unit.
D Secure hair above shoulder length. Secure
or remove jewelry, loose clothing, or clothing with loosely hanging straps, ties, tassels, etc. They can be caught in moving
parts.
D Stay alert. Do not operate unit when you are
tired, ill, upset, or if you are under the influence
of alcohol, drugs, or medication.
D Keep children, bystanders, and animals
away from work area a minimum of 30 feet
(10 m) when starting or operating unit.
HANDLE FUEL WITH CAUTION
D Eliminate all sources of sparks or flame (in-
cluding smoking, open flames, or work that
can cause sparks) in the areas where fuel is
mixed, poured, or stored.
D Mix and pour fuel in an outdoor area; store
fuel in a cool, dry, well ventilated place; use
an approved, marked container for all fuel
purposes.
D Do not smoke while handling fuel or while
operating the unit.
D Do not fill fuel tank while engine is running.
D Make sure the unit is properly assembled
and in good operating condition.
D Avoid spilling fuel or oil. Wipe up fuel spills
before starting the engine.
D Move at least 10 feet (3 meters) away from
fuel and fueling site before starting engine.
D Always store gasoline in a container ap-
proved for flammable liquids.
OPERATE YOUR UNIT SAFELY

vapors or carbon monoxide build up could
be present.
D Do not overreach or use from unstable sur-
faces such as ladders, trees, steep slopes,
rooftops, etc. Keep firm footing and balance
at all times.
D Do not raise unit above your shoulders; the
cutting blade can come dangerously close
to your body.
D Always keep unit in front of your body. Keep
all parts of your body away from the cutting
blade.
D Keep the cutting blade and air vents free
from debris.
D Use only for jobs explained in this manual.
MAINTAIN YOUR UNIT PROPERLY
D Have all maintenance other than the rec-
ommended procedures described in the instruction manual performed by an authorized service dealer.
D Disconnect spark plug before performing
maintenance except for carburetor adjustments.
D Do not use a cutting blade that is bent,
warped, cracked, broken, or damaged in any
other way. Have worn or damaged parts replaced by an authorized service dealer.
D Use only recommended WEED EATER
cutting blades and replacement parts; use
of any other parts may void your warranty
and cause damage to your unit.
D Empty fuel tank before storing the unit. Use
up fuel left in carburetor by starting engine and
letting it run until it stops.
D Hand carry the unit with the engine stopped
and the muffler and cutting blade away from
your body.
D Allow engine to cool, empty the fuel tank,
and secure the unit before storing or transporting it in a vehicle.

Finding fuel or oil residue on muffler is normal

CHOKE
The CHOKE helps to supply fuel to the engine
to aid in cold starting. Activate the choke by
moving choke lever to the desired position. See
STARTING YOUR ENGINE for complete starting information.
WARNING: Muffler is very hot during
and after use. Do not touch the muffler or allow combustible material such as dry grass or
fuel to do so.

FUELING ENGINE
WARNING: Remove fuel cap slowly
when refueling.
HELPFUL TIP
Toobtain the correct oil mix
ratio, pour 3.2 ounces of
2-- cycle synthetic oil into
one gallon of fresh gas.
This engine is certified to operate on unleaded
gasoline. Before operation, gasoline must be
mixed with a good quality synthetic 2-cycle aircooled engine oil designed to be mixed at a ratio
of 40:1. Poulan/WEED EATER brand synthetic
oil is recommended. A 40:1 ratio is obtained
by mixing 3.2 fluid ounces (95 ml) of oil with 1
gallon (4 liters) of unleaded gasoline). DO
NOT USE automotive oil or boat oil. These
oils will cause engine damage. When mixing
fuel, follow instructions printed on oil container. Once oil is added to gasoline, shake con-

PRIMER BULB
The PRIMER BULB removes air from the carburetor and fuel lines and fills them with fuel.
This allows you to start the engine with fewer
pulls on the starter rope. Activate the primer
bulb by pressing it and allowing it to return to
its original position.
THROTTLE TRIGGER
The THROTTLE TRIGGER controls engine
speed. Squeeze the trigger for full speed operation; release it for idle speed.

This engine requires the use of minimum 87
octane [R+M]/2 clean gasoline.
IMPORTANT
Use of alcohol blended fuels (called gasohol or
using ethanol or methanol) can cause major engine performance and durability problems.

fuels will cause problems such as: improper
clutch engagements, overheating, vapor lock,
power loss, lubrication deficiency, deterioration
of fuel lines, gaskets and internal carburetor
components, etc. Alternative fuels cause high
moisture absorption into the fuel/oil mixture
leading to oil and fuel s eparation.
OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS
It is recommended that the engine not be
operated for longer than 30 seconds at full
throttle. Releasing the trigger and allowing
the engine to briefly return to idle speed (5 -10 seconds) will be sufficient.

4. Move the choke lever to the FULL CHOKE
position.

5. Pull starter rope handle sharply until engine sounds as if it is trying to run, but do
not pull rope more than 6 times.
6. Move the choke lever to the HALF
CHOKE position.
7. Pull starter rope sharply until the engine
runs, but no more than 6 pulls.
NOTE:If the engine doesn’t start after 6 pulls
(at the HALF CHOKE position), check to make
suretheON/OFFswitchis inthe ONposition.
Move the choke lever to the FULL CHOKE
position and press the primer bulb 6 times; pull
the starter rope 2 more times. Move the choke
lever to the HALF CHOKE position and pull the
starter rope until the engine runs, but no more
than 6 more pulls. If the engine still doesn’t start,
it is probably flooded. Proceed to STARTING A
FLOODED ENGINE.
8. Once the engine starts, allow the engine to
run 10 seconds, then move the choke lever
to the OFF CHOKE position. Allow the unit to
run for 30 more seconds at the OFF CHOKE
position before squeezing and releasing the
throttle trigger to release the throttle lock.
NOTE: If engine dies with the choke lever in
the OFF CHOKE position, move the choke lever to the HALF CHOKE position and pull the
rope until the engine runs, but no more than 6
pulls.
STARTING A WARM ENGINE
1. Move the ON/OFF switch to the ON position.
2. Slowly press the primer bulb 6 times.
3. Move the choke lever to the HALF
CHOKE position.
4. Engage the throttle lock as directed in
STARTING A COLD ENGINE.

SERVICE
STARTING A FLOODED ENGINE
Flooded engines can be started by placing
the ON/OFF switch in the ON position and the
choke lever in the OFF CHOKE position and
engaging the throttle lock as directed in the
STARTING A COLD ENGINE section; then,
pull the rope to clear the engine of excess
fuel. Starting could require pull ing the starte r
rope many times depending on how badly the
unit is flooded. If the unit still doesn’t start, refer
to the TROUBLESHOOTING TABLE or call
1-800-554-6723.

is in the OFF position and disconnect the
spark plug before performing maintenance

CLEAN AIR FILTER
Air Filter
Cleaning the air filter:
A dirty air filter decreases engine performance and increases fuel consumption and
harmful emissions. Always clean after every
5 hours of operation.
S Clean the cover and the area around it to
keep debris from falling into the carburetor
chamber when the cover is removed.
S Remove parts as illustrated.
NOTE: Do not clean filter in gasoline or other
flammable solvent. Doing so can create a fire
hazard or produce harmful evaporative emissions.
S Wash the filter in soap and water.
S Allow filter to dry.
S Add a few drops of oil to the filter; squeeze
filter to distribute oil.
S Replace parts.
INSPECT MUFFLER AND SPARK
ARRESTING SCREEN
WARNING: The muffler on this prod-
uct contains chemicals known to the State of
California to cause cancer.
As your unit is used, carbon deposits build up
on the muffler and spark arresting screen and
must be removed to avoid creating a fire hazard or affecting engine performance.
For normal homeowner use, the muffler and
spark arresting screen will not require any
service. After 50 hours of use, we recommend that your muffler be serviced or replaced by an authorized service dealer.

CARBURETOR IDLE SPEED
ADJUSTMENT
WARNING: Keep others away when
making idle speed adjustments. The blade
will be moving during most of this procedure.
Wear your protective equipment and observe
all safety precautions. When making adjustments, use a screwdriver short enough to
keep your hands behind the handguard and
away from the blade. After making adjustments, the blade must not move at idle speed.
The carburetor has been carefully set at the
factory. Adjustments may be necessary if you
notice any of the following conditions:
S Engine will not idle when the throttle is re-
leased.
S The blade moves at idle. Keep others away
when making idle speed adjustments.
Make adjustments with the unit resting on a
level surface free of debris that can be caught
in the hedge trimmer blade. Serious injury to
the operator and others can occur if the carburetor is not properly adjusted. Keep all
parts of your body away from the blade and
muffler.
To adjust idle speed:
Allow engine to idle. Adjust speed until engine
runs without blade moving (idle too fast) or engine stalling (idle speed too slow).
S Turn idle speed screw clockwise to in-
crease engine speed if enginestalls or dies.
S Turn idle speed screw counterclockwise to
decrease engine speed if the blade moves
at idle.
WARNING: Recheck the idle speed
after each adjustment. The blade must not
move at idle speed to avoid serious injury to
the operator or others.

REPLACE SPARK PLUG
Replace spark plug each year to ensure the
engine starts easier and runs better. Set
spark plug gap at 0.025 inch. Ignition timing is
fixed, nonadjustable.
NOTE: This spark ignition system complies
with the Canadian standard ICES- -002.
1. Twist, then pull off spark plug boot.
2. Remove spark plug from cylinder and dis card.
3. Replace with Champion RCJ-6Y spark
plug and tighten securely with a 3/4 inch
socket wrench.
4. Reinstall the spark plug boot.
REPLACE FUEL FILTER
To replace fuel filter, drain unit by running it dry
of fuel, then remove fuel cap/retainer assembly from tank. Pull filter from tank and remove
it from the fuel line. Install new fuel filter on fuel
line; reinstall parts.

STORAGE
WARNING: Perform the following
steps after each use:
S Allow engine to cool, and secure the unit
before storing or transporting.
S Store unit and fuel in a well ventilated area
where fuel vapors cannot reach sparks or
open flames from water heaters, electric
motors or switches, furnaces, etc.
S Store unit with all guards in place. Position
unit so that any sharp object cannot accidentally cause injury.
S Store unit and fuel well out of the reach of
children.
SEASONAL STORAGE
Prepare unit for storage at end of season or if
it will not be used for 30 days or more.
If your unit is to be stored for a period of time:
S Clean the entire unit.
S Store in a clean dry area.
S Clean all parts and check for damage.
Have damaged parts repaired or replaced
by an authorized service dealer.
S Keep all nuts, bolts, and screws tight.
S Lightly oil external metal surfaces, includ-
ing the blade.
To oil the blade, do the following:
S Stop the engine and allow blade to come to
a complete stop.
S Ensure ON/OFF switch is in the OFF posi-
tion.
S Disconnect the spark plug wire.
S Apply a light machine oil along the edge of
the top strap as shown.

FUEL SYST EM
Under FUELING ENGINE in the OPERATION section of this manual, see message labeled IMPORTANT regarding the use of gasohol in your engine. Fue l stabi lizer is an acceptable alternative in minimizing the formation
of fuel gum deposits during storage. Add stabilizer to gasoline in fuel tank or fuel storage container. Follow the mix instructions found on stabilizer container. Run engine at least 5 minutes
after adding stabilizer.
HELPFUL TIP
During storage of your gas/
oil mixture, the oil will separate from the gas.
We recommend that you
shake the gas can weekly
to ins ure proper blending of
the gas and oil.
ENGINE
S Remove spark plug and pour 1 teaspoon of
40:1, 2-cycle engine oil (air cooled) through
the spark plug opening. Slowly pull the
starter rope 8 to 10 times to distribute oil.
S Replace spark plug with new one of recom-
mended type and heat range (see REPLACE SPARK PLUG section).
S Clean air filter.
S Check entire unit for loose screws, nuts,
and bolts. Replace any damaged, broken,
or worn parts.
S At the beginning of the next season, use
only fresh fuel having the proper gasoline to
oil ratio.
OTHER
S Do not store gasoline from one season to
another.
S Replace your gasoline can if it starts to rust.

blades that will wear and require replacement

This warranty does not cover pre--delivery setup or normal adjustments explained in the instruction manual. This warranty does not cover
transportation costs.

YOUR WARRANTY RIGHTS AND OBLIGATIONS: The U.S. Environmental
Protection Agency, California Air Resources
Board, Environment Canada and WEED
EATER are pleased to explain the emissions
control system warranty on your year 2010 and
later small off-- road engine. In California, all
small off-- road engines must be designed, built,
andequipp ed to meet the State’s stringentanti-smog standards. WEED EATER must warrant the emission control system on y our
small off--road engine for the periods of time
listed below provided there has been no
abuse, neglect, or improper maintenance of
your small off--road engine. You r emission
control system includes parts such as the carburetor, the ignition system and the fuel tank .
Where a warrantable condition exists, WEED
EATER will repair your small off--road engine
at no cost to you. Expenses covered under
warranty include diagnosis, parts and labor.
MANUFACTURER’S WARRANTY COVERAGE: If any emissions related part on your
engine (as listed under Emissions Control
Warranty Parts List) is defective or a defect in
the materials or workmanship of the engine
causes the failure of such an emission related
part, the part will be repaired or replaced by
WEED EATER. OWNER’S WARRANTYRE-
SPONSIBILITIES: As the small off--road engine owner, you are responsible for the performance of the required maintenance listed
in your instruction manual. WEED EATER
recommends that you retain all receipts covering maintenance on your small off--road engine, but WEED EATER cannot deny warranty solely for the lack of receipts or for your failure to ensure the performance of all scheduled maintenance. As the small off-- road engine owner, you should be aware that WEED
EATER may deny you warranty coverage if
your small off-- road engine or a part of it has

failed due to abuse, neglect, improper maintenance, unapproved modifications, or the use of
parts not made or approved by the original
equipment manufacturer. You are responsible
for presenting your small off-- road engine to an
WEED EATER authorized repair center as
soon as a problem exists. Warranty repairs
should be completed in a reasonable amount of
time, not to exceed 30 days. If you have any

MENT DATE: The warranty period begins on
the date the small off- -road engine is purchased.
LENGTH OF COVERAGE: This warranty shall
be for a period of two years from the initial date
of purchase, or until the end of the product war ranty (whichever is longer). WHAT IS COV-

PARTS. Repair or replacement of any war-
ranted part will be performed at no charge to the
owner at an approved Poulan PRO servicing

RIOD: Any warranted part which is not scheduled for replacement as required maintenance,

part which is scheduled for replacement as required maintenance shall be warranted for the
