FastMap Mobile generally comes pre-installed on the hardware device of your choice. In the event of a
full system reset or a new version release please follow these instructions
Activesync Installation
Active sync is a Microsoft product for use with handheld operating systems such as Windows Mobile,
for transferring information between desktop PC and your handheld device and vice versa
The software is installed on the PC with the handheld device connected to an available communications
port.
To install the software, insert your device companion CD into the CD-ROM drive, usually the (D:\) of
your desktop computer. The installation should Autorun, if this fails to happen, browse to the CD and
double click the Microsoft Active Sync Application
After the software has been installed, you will be prompted to connect your Handheld Device to your
Desktop Computer.
To establish a connection, link the USB or serial cable supplied with your handheld device to your
computer and turn on your handheld device. Your Mobile device should automatically connect your PC.
You will be asked to establish a partnership, select Yes and follow the wizard
NOTE: It is recommended that ‘files’ are NOT selected for auto-synchronisation – This will be performed
by the FastMap Desktop products DataFlow or WorkFlow

FastMap Mobile Installation
Before installing FastMap Mobile, ensure the target device is connected to the computer installation will
occur from.
In order to install FastMap Mobile onto your device, simply double click on the FastMapMobile8.exe if you don’t have access to the latest installation file, it can be downloaded from the
www.trimble.com/tps site.
You will be presented with a list of options outlining which components can be installed
• FastMap Mobile – This is required for all installations & upgrades
• Trimble Pathfinder 2.32 – This is only required for first time installations of version 8 – if you
are unsure leave this option ticked.
• UK Projections – Only required for devices operating in the UK
• Compact FrameWork – Only required for devices NOT running windows mobile 6 – if you are
unsure leave this option ticked.
• Trimble Licence Manager – A Desktop Application for managing the licencing of FastMap
Mobile 8 and should always be installed for first time installations & upgrades
You may then be prompted with an option to install various program components in either Main Memory
(or default application folder) or on the Storage Card. It is important to select Main Memory at this point,
as FastMap Mobile will only run in the correct folder specified for the mobile device.
Note: Although the application must be installed in main memory there are options to install the
Collection data files, background mapping & geodata transformation files onto a storage card later in the
installation procedure.
When the installation procedure is complete – Tap the start button & select Trimble FastMap Mobile (if
FastMap Mobile is not listed on the Start Menu, then select programs and select it from the full list of
installed applications displayed there)
On the first time execution, you will be requested to ‘Register Controls’ – Select Yes to this prompt and
a series of beeps will be heard, denoting that the setup process is continuing. If you have an external
storage card inserted, then you will also be presented with an option to move the geodata folder on to the
storage card – this is essential for devices with low internal memory such as the Juno Series.
When the initial execution process has been completed, the FastMap Mobile Splash screen will be
displayed. If this is a fresh install then you will be asked to specify the location that you wish to store
your collected data - Select either the \my documents or from the listed storage card locations.
Note this prompt decides where collected data is stored – background map data can be stored either in
main memory or on the storage card, and doesn’t need to be explicitly defined.
You will now need to licence the software.

Licensing
The software should already be licenced when you receive the device from your dealer
If the software has not been licenced, it can be performed by running the desktop application, the
Trimble Licence Manager – which will have been installed under programs\Trimble\FastMap Mobile
Note: you must have an active-sync connection between your PC and the mobile device that you are
wishing to activate, before running the Licence Manager Application
When the Licence Manager application starts, it should display two bright green lights denoting that you
are online (connected to the internet) and connected to a mobile device.
You will now need to enter the Proof of Purchase Number (PoPN) , that you should have received via
email – if you have not received a PoPN then please contact your dealer. Once a valid PoPN number has
been entered click the Retrieve Licence button, The Licence Manager Application, will verify the PoPN
details, and transfer a valid license directly onto the connected mobile device.
If you have difficulties with the automated licencing procedure, due to firewall or connection problems,
then please contract your dealer who will be able to talk you through the manual licencing operation.

Starting The GPS in FastMap Mobile 8
After successfully licensing FastMap Mobile 8, start the FastMap application on your device.
When presented with the map screen which is clearly denoted by 4 ‘finger’ buttons located at the bottom
of the screen, tap ‘Menu -> Management -> Setup -> Preferences -> GPS Tab’ to check that your GPS
startup options are correctly specified (recommend Auto Start, Autonomous and Path Finder are
checked), then tap OK from the bottom of the screen.
Once you have returned to the map screen select Menu > GPS > GPS Status, this will now start the GPS
system.
The GPS screen is made up of 5 tabs which can be seen at the bottom of the screen, tap “Opts” at the far
right of the screen & tap “Application” button to set specific GPS options.
Note: We advise you select “Start Tracking (On Startup)” and “Hide Me (On Startup)”, then use the
Quick profile and Quick projection drop down menus, The profile should match your device name, the
projection should match your target grid system.
After choosing your desired settings press the “OK” button, you will prompted with a message box,
press “Yes” to save your settings.
You will now be taken to the GPS status screen where you can track the progress of various GPS
information.
Once you have obtained a “Lock” press the red power button from the top of the screen to hide the GPS
tool.
Creating a new job in FastMap Mobile 8
From the map view screen tap the “Menu -> Management -> New Job, when asked “Mark Current Job
‘default’ as finished, select Yes.
With the New Job screen open tap inside the ‘Job Name’ text box, this will open the full screen
keyboard, allowing you to give your job a simple name. Tap “OK” to continue.
Apply the same principal to the “Desc” (Description) box
When the New Job & Desc fields are complete tap “OK” and you will be presented with the
confirmation screen, that displays how much ‘spece’ is available for the new job. Tap “OK” to finish.
You should now be looking at the map view screen, and the name of your new job should be present in
the top left corner of the screen.

Recording your first point in FastMap Mobile 8
After creating a new job you are now ready to start recording data.
To record a simple “Point” at your current location tap the “Record” button on the far right of the map
view screen, this will present you with the Point attribute data.
The default “Point” attribute screen will be displayed with 6 fields,
1. FOID = Field Object ID
2. DateStamp = Current date and time
3. QA = GPS data consisting of “Sats in view / DOP / Fix mode / Est Acc”
4. Hotlink = A field to allow hand drawn images or photograph to be collected
5. Level = The current GPS level in metres.
6. Remarks = This is a field that will allow for simple annotation of your current point.
Once you have completed the attribute data screen, tap “Save” and you will hear a Woosh sound to
indicate that you have created a point with attribute data.
You will be returned to the Map View screen, with your newly collected “Point” feature displayed on the
map. Other feature types (by default linear, area & Incidents) can be recorded by tapping on the ‘current
feature’ link, in the top right corner of the map screen

Active Corners – Three of the MapView corners perform specific ‘Zooming’ task, - Zoom In, Zoom
Out, & Zoom Last (return to previous map view)
System Menu – The Top Left MapView corner gives quick access to a number of system options
including, Full Screen Toggles & Snap Toggles
Active Edges – Clicking on the MapView edge, away from an Active Corner, will cause the map to pan
in that direction.
Zoom Window - Drawing a window within the MapView will cause the MapView display to zoom into
that window
Tap & Hold – Displays the context menu – if a ‘point feature’ is selected, a menu offering, Positional
Data, Attribute Data, Delete, Move, Navigate options will be displayed, if a ‘node on a linear feature’ is
selected there will be additional options for Delete Feature, Finish Feature, Edit Polyline.
Current Feature – Displays the feature name that the NEXT recorded point will have – this can be
clicked to give access to the Feature Library, where the Current Feature can be selected.
Current Mode – Displays either the currently selected ‘Point ID’ or provide a prompt as to what the
next MapView screen click will do (eg Select, Manual Add, Move to etc)
GPS Status – Provides a visual indication of the quality of the current GPS position, including:
• ‘Fix’ type (Red Bar – No Fix, Amber – Autonomous, Green – Differential),
• Indication of Number of Satellites tracked
• Estimate of Positional Accuracy
Screen Distance – Distance, in metres, of the current map view
Finger Buttons – Configurable dependant on task, but generally include options for Accessing the Main
Menu, Toggling between Select Mode & Manual Add Mode, re-viewing Attribute data of the currently
selected point, and recording a new point at the current GPS location
