DSMX

Spektrum launched the 2.4GHz RC revolution with its DSM2™ technology. Since then, millions of hobbyists the world over have come to embrace 2.4 as the way to ﬂy. Spektrum leads the way yet again with DSMX—the world’s ﬁrst wideband, frequency-agile 2.4GHz signal protocol.

How Does DSMX Work?

It’s a crowded 2.4GHz world out there and every 2.4GHz system faces the same challenges. DSMX better equips you for these challenges by combining the superior data capacity and interference resistance of a wideband signal (like that used in DSM2) with the agility of frequency shifts.

Compared to the wideband signal of DSMX, the narrow band signal of other frequency hopping 2.4 transmitters is more likely to suffer data loss in the event of on-channel interference. Think of it as a river vs. a stream. It takes more interference to dam a river than it does a stream.

As more and more 2.4 transmitters vie for the same number of available channels, there is more interference and more of a risk for data loss. By adding the agility of frequency shifts to the superior interference resistance of a wideband signal, DSMX is far less likely to suffer signiﬁcant data loss from on-channel interference. The result is quicker connection times and superior response in even the most crowded 2.4GHz environment.

DSMX Operational Differences

DSMX transmitters and receivers function nearly identically to Spektrum DSM2 systems. Binding, setting the failsafe, recording ﬂight log data, as well as general use of the system is no different than using any current Spektrum system.

Following are the operational differences:

Brownout Detection - Not Available on DSMX Receivers DSM2 receivers feature Brownout Detection that ﬂashes the receiver’s LED if a power interruption occurs. While DSMX receivers have QuickConnect a power interruption, the architecture of DSMX prevents Brownout Detection when operating in DSMX mode.

Flight Log Recording-Fades Higher than DSM2

Note that DSMX hops through the band while DSM2 ﬁnds two quiet channels and remains on those channels. Consequently because DSMX operates on quiet and noisy channels, it’s common to have more Antenna Fades than when using DSM2, when used in busy 2.4GHz environments. When taking ﬂight log data readings, the Frames and Hold Data are important and should be used a reference while Fades are insigniﬁcant due to the nature of frequency hopping. A 10-minute ﬂight will typically result in less than 50 Frame Losses and no Holds.

Just How Good is DSMX?

In multiple tests, 100 DSMX systems were operated simultaneously for extended periods of time. During these tests each of the 100 systems was monitored in ﬂight and on the ground. In every test not a single case of RF link loss, latency increase or control degradation was experienced or recorded.

Is DSMX Compatible with DSM2?

Yes. DSMX is fully compatible with all DSM2 hardware. In fact, many pilots may ﬁnd the DSM2 equipment they have now is all they will ever need. Even if a new DSMX transmitter eventually comes along that they really want, all the DSM2 receivers they have now will work with it.

It is important to note, however, that while DSMX is compatible with DSM2, the only way to experience the full beneﬁts of DSMX in a busy 2.4 environment is by pairing a DSMX transmitter with a DSMX receiver.

Are DSM2 Transmitters Eligible for a DSMX Add-on? Yes. DX8 owners can simply download Spektrum AirWare

™

software from spektrumrc.com and update the ﬁrmware using their SD card. All DSM2 transmitters, except the DX5e, are eligible for the add-on by going to https://community.spektrumrc.com/ for details. DSM2 receivers and transmitter modules are not eligible for the DSMX add-on.

AR6410T User Guide

The AR6410T 6-channel ultra micro receiver with integrated servos, speed control and X-Port™ technology is designed for ultra micro aircraft. Featuring DSM2™/ DSMX® technology the AR6410T is compatible with all Spektrum™, JR®, E-ﬂite® and ParkZone® 2.4GHz DSM2 technology transmitters.

NOTICE: The AR6410T receiver is not compatible with the DX6 park ﬂyer radio system.

Applications

The AR6410T is designed for ultra micro aircraft and is ideal for scratch-built ultra micro projects that require dual brushed ESC output. The AR6410T is designed to utilize a single-cell LiPo battery. Two integrated brushed speed controllers can be used to power brushed motors up to 2 amps of continuous current. An integrated X-Port feature allows for future expansion.

Note: When X-Port is active, CH5 and CH6 are not available; however, reversed aileron (CH2) is still available.

It is recommended to use double-sided foam tape strips and/or minimal hot glue in the corners to install your receiver in the fuselage. The servos need to be in the appropriate position to attach to and drive the elevator and rudder pushrods. Installation will vary depending upon application.

Servos

The AR6410T incorporates integrated servos, but optional Spektrum servos are

also available. Using any servo other than a Spektrum servo will cause damage to

the receiver and/or the servo and may void the warranty.

Installing and Plugging in the Optional Servos

Use double-sided foam tape strips and/or minimal hot glue to mount the servos

in place. The servos need to be in the appropriate position to attach to the corresponding pushrods. Plug the servo leads into the appropriate servo ports in the receiver noting the polarity of the servo connector. Installation will vary depending upon application.

Smart Bind™

The AR6410T receiver must be bound to the transmitter before it will operate. Binding is the process of programming the receiver of the control unit to recognize

the GUID (Globally Unique Identier) code of a single specic transmitter. The

AR6410T features Smart Bind. When the receiver is ﬁrst powered, the receiver will look for the signal of its previously bound transmitter for 5 seconds. If no signal is found, the receiver will automatically go into bind mode, indicated by the ﬂashing LED.

Binding

1. Make sure the ﬂight battery is fully charged.

2. Conﬁrm the ﬂight battery is disconnected from the receiver/ESC unit and the

transmitter is turned off.

3. Plug the ﬂight battery into the receiver’s battery connector. After 5 seconds the

LED on the receiver unit will begin ﬂashing, indicating it is in bind mode.

4. After verifying the LED is ﬂashing on the receiver, follow the steps necessary that

allow your transmitter to enter bind mode. (See your transmitter’s manual)

5. If you entered bind mode correctly, you will see a solid LED within about 10

seconds. You should now be bound to the transmitter and have full control and function.

After Binding

Once the system is bound, the transmitter should always be turned on ﬁrst and then the receiver to prevent the receiver from re-entering bind mode. If your receiver inadvertently enters bind mode, simply unplug the battery from the receiver and reinstall with the transmitter remaining on.

Advanced Programming Features The following programming features are only recommended for advanced radio users. To safely accomplish advanced programming feature changes, please enlist the use of a helper; one person to hold the aircraft to prevent unintended ﬂyaways, and a second person to make the changes on the transmitter. The procedures below apply to all compatible transmitters. Prior to making any advanced programming feature changes it is necessary to:

4. Set all channels to normal reversing

Reversing Servos

Servo reversing may be achieved using the servo reversing function of your transmitter, or as certain advanced applications require it, you may reverse the actual servos by following the instructions and diagrams below.

Reversing The Servos on the Receiver Board

This feature reverses the servos at the board level, making it useful for implementing features (such as elevons) while using transmitters with limited programming options.

NOTICE: All changes made in advanced programming must start with the receiver powered down to prevent the motor from running unexpectedly.

To safely accomplish advanced programming feature changes, please enlist the use of a helper. One to hold the aircraft to prevent unintended ﬂyaways, and one to make the changes on the transmitter.

Sticks must be held in this position while the transmitter is on and the receiver is off.

1. Ensure a successful bind was completed

2. Turn transmitter on

3. Move THRO stick to full throttle position

4. Move control sticks to the corresponding position for the servo to be reversed (see illustration)

5. While holding this position, plug the battery into the receiver; power receiver

6. The LED on the receiver will go solid and within 5 seconds the LED will ﬂash 3

times quickly, indicating servo is now reversed

7. Disconnect battery from receiver

8. Turn transmitter off

Reversing Optional Linear Servos

Reversing the servo is useful when implementing certain installations, such as dual ailerons, ﬂaps, etc. Spektrum offers a servo reversing lead that can be plugged between the receiver and the optional servo.

To safely accomplish advanced programming feature changes, please enlist the use of a helper. One to hold the aircraft to prevent unintended ﬂyaways, and one to make the changes on the transmitter.

To reverse the servo using the reversing lead:

1. Plug the reversing lead into the servo

2. Plug servo into CH2 or Reversed CH2/CH6 ports

3. Power receiver using a charged battery

4. Once receiver connects, the servo is now reversed

5. Disconnect battery from receiver

6. Remove servo reversing lead and store it in a safe place for future use

7. Reinstall servo lead into servo port

To Change Channel 6 to a Reversed Channel 2 for Dual Ailerons or Reversed Channel 2 to Channel 6

Troubleshooting Guide

Problem Possible Cause Solution

Aircraft will not “throttle up”but all other controls seem to function.

LED on aircraft remains ﬂashing and cannot be controlled by transmitter.

What this Warranty Covers

Horizon Hobby, Inc., (Horizon) warrants to the original purchaser that the product purchased (the “Product”) will be free from defects in materials and workmanship for a period of 1 years from the date of purchase.

What is Not Covered

This warranty is not transferable and does not cover (i) cosmetic damage, (ii) damage due to acts of God, accident, misuse, abuse, negligence, commercial use, or due to improper use, installation, operation or maintenance, (iii) modiﬁcation of or to any part of the Product, (iv) attempted service by anyone other than a Horizon Hobby authorized service center, or (v) Products not purchased from an authorized Horizon dealer.

OTHER THAN THE EXPRESS WARRANTY ABOVE, HORIZON MAKES NO OTHER WARRANTY OR REPRESENTATION, AND HEREBY DISCLAIMS ANY AND ALL IMPLIED

Horizon reserves the right to inspect any and all Product(s) involved in a warranty claim. Service or replacement decisions are at the sole discretion of Horizon. DAMAGES. Further, in no event shall the liability of Horizon exceed the individual price of the Product on which liability is asserted. As Horizon has no control over use, setup, ﬁnal assembly, modiﬁcation or misuse, no liability shall be assumed nor accepted for any resulting damage or injury. By the act of use, setup or assembly, the user accepts all resulting liability. If you as the purchaser or user are not prepared to accept the liability associated with the use of the Product, purchaser is advised to return the Product immediately in new and unused condition to the place of purchase.

Law

These terms are governed by Illinois law (without regard to conﬂict of law principals). This warranty gives you speciﬁc legal rights, and you may also have other rights which vary from state to state. Horizon reserves the right to change or modify this warranty at any time without notice.

Once assembly, setup or use of the Product has been started, you must contact your local distributor or Horizon directly. Inspection or Services

If this Product needs to be inspected or serviced, please use the Horizon Online Service Request submission process found on our website or call Horizon to obtain a Return Merchandise Authorization (RMA) number. Pack the Product securely using a shipping carton. Please note that original boxes may be included, but are not designed to withstand the rigors of shipping without additional protection. Ship via a carrier that provides tracking and insurance for lost or damaged parcels, as Horizon is not responsible for merchandise until it arrives and is accepted at our facility. An Online Service Request is available at http://www.horizonhobby.com under the Support tab. If you do not have internet access, please contact Horizon Product Support to obtain a RMA number along with instructions for submitting your product for service. When calling Horizon, you will be asked to provide your complete name, street address, email address and phone number where you can be reached during business hours. When sending product into Horizon, please include your RMA number, a list of the included items, and a brief summary of the problem. A copy of your original sales receipt must be included for warranty consideration. Be sure your name, address, and RMA number are clearly written on the outside of the shipping carton.

Notice: Do not ship LiPo batteries to Horizon. If you have any issue with a LiPo battery, please contact the appropriate Horizon Product Support ofﬁce.

Warranty Requirements For Warranty consideration, you must include your original sales receipt verifying the proof-of-purchase date. Provided warranty conditions have been

met, your Product will be serviced or replaced free of charge. Service or replacement decisions are at the sole discretion of Horizon.

Non-Warranty Service Should your service not be covered by warranty service will be completed and payment will be required without notiﬁcation or estimate of the expense unless the expense exceeds 50% of the retail purchase cost.

By submitting the item for service you are agreeing to payment of the service without notiﬁcation. Service estimates are available upon request. You must include this request with your item submitted for service. Non-warranty service estimates will be billed a minimum of ½ hour of labor. In addition you will be billed for return freight. DSMX

Spektrum hat die RC Technologie mit dem DSM2 System revolutioniert und damit Millionen von RC Hobbyfreunden zu zufriedenen Nutzern des 2,4 Ghz Systems gemacht. Spektrum setzt jetzt mit dem DSMX System wieder Meilensteine. DSMX ist weltweit das erste Breitband Frequenz agile 2,4 Ghz Signalprotokoll.

Wie arbeitet DSMX ?

Die Nutzer des 2,4 GHz Frequenzbereich werden immer mehr und durch diese Menge steht jedes System vor der Herrausforderung auch in Zukunft eine sichere Übertragung zu gewährleisten. Das DSMX ist für diese Herausforderungen besser gewappnet, kombiniert es die excellente Datenkapazität und Sicherheit vor Störungen eines Breitbandsignales (wie bei DSM2) genutzt mit der Frequenzagilität.

Verglichen mit dem Breitbandsignal des DSMX neigen die Signale anderer Frequenzhoppingsysteme dazu Daten bei Kanalstörungen zu verlieren. Stellen Sie sich einfach das DSMX System wie einen breiten mächtigen Fluss vor und die Frequenzhoppingsysteme wie einen Bach. Es braucht erheblich mehr Einﬂuß einen großen Strom zu stören als einen Bach.

Die Zahl der Nutzer der 2.4Ghz Systeme steigt ständig bei gleichbleibender Zahl der zur Verfügung stehender Kanäle. Daraus ergibt sich ein höheres Risiko für Datenverluste. Zusammen mit der Frequenzagilität und der hervorragenden Störsicherheit des Breitbandsignales ist das DSMX System die sicherste Wahl. Weitere Vorteile des Systems sind schnelle Verbindungszeiten und excellente Resonanz auch in dichtester 2,4 Ghz Umgebung.

Unterschiede im DSMX Betrieb

DSMX Sender und Empfänger arbeiten nahezu indentisch wie das Spektrum DSM2 System. Der Bindevorgang, Einstellen des Failsafe, Aufzeichnen der Flight Log Daten und der allgemeine Betrieb des Systems mach keinen Unterschied zu dem bestehenden Spektrum System.

Die Systemunterschiede

Brownout Detection (Spannungsabfalldetektion): Diese Funktion steht bei DSMX Empfängern nicht mehr zu Verfügung. DSM2 Empfänger sind mit einer Brownout Detection ausgestattet ,die eine LED zur Erkennung des Spannungsabfall blinken läßt. DSMX Empfänger sind mit der Quick Connect Funktion ausgestattet, die sich unverzüglich nach einer Stromunterbrechung wieder verbindet. Die Architektur von DSMX verhindert so den Brownout im DSMX Mode.

Flight Log Aufzeichnungen - Mehr Ausblendungen als bei DSM2

Bitte beachten Sie, dass DSMX sich in den Kanälen bewegt, während DSM2 sich zwei ruhige Kanäle sucht und auf ihnen bleibt. Da DSMX auf beiden Kanaltypen arbeitet ist es normal, dass es mehr Antennenausblendungen (Fades) gibt. Bei dem Auslesen der Flight Log Daten sind die angezeigten Frames Losses und Hold Daten wichtig und sollten als Referenz verwendet werden. Die Angaben der Fades (Ausblendungen) können aufgrund der Natur der Frequenzagilität als unwesentlich eingestuft werden. Ein 10 Minuten Flug kann typischweise weniger als 50 Frame Losses aufweisen und keine Holds.

Wie gut ist DSMX ?

In multiplen Tests wurden für einen langen Zeitraum 100 DSMX Systeme gleichzeitig betrieben. Während der Tests wurde jedes DSMX System im Flug und am Boden überwacht. In jedem Test wurde kein Verlust der RF Verbindung, Verringerung der Latenzzeit oder ein Qualitätsverlust der Verbindung aufgezeichnet.

Ist DSMX kompatibel mit DSM ?

Ja, DSMX ist voll kompabitel zu DSM2. Viele Piloten haben mit ihrer DSM2 Ausrüstung das gefunden was sie für Ihr Hobby brauchen. Da ist es gut zu wissen, dass auch ein neuer DSMX Sender mit den vorhandenen DSM2 Empfängern kompatibel ist. Wichtig zu bemerken ist, dass trotz der Kompatibilität von DSMX zu DSM2 alle Vorteile des DSMX nur dann zum Tragen kommen, wenn ein DSMX Sender mit einem DMX Empfänger betrieben wird.

Sind DSM2 Sender für eine DSMX Erweiterung geeignet ?

Ja, DX8 Besitzer können Ihre Anlage aufrüsten mit dem Download der Spektrum Air Ware v2.0 Software von Spektrum RC, die über die SD Karte in die Firmware der Anlage übertragen wird. Alle DSM2 Sender mit Ausnahme der DX5e können mit einer DSMX Erweiterung über den technischen Service von Horizon Hobby für Euro: 79,99 ausgerüstet werden. DSM2 Empfänger und Module sind für diese Erweiterung nicht geeignet.
