WARNING!!
WHEN SERVICING, DO NOT APPROACH THE LASER EXIT WITH THE EYE TOO CLOSELY. IN CASE IT IS NECESSARY TO CONFIRM LASER BEAM EMISSION, BE SURE TO OBSERVE FROM A DISTANCE OF MORE THAN 25 cm FROM THE SURFACE OF THE OBJECTIVE LENS ON THE OPTICAL PICK-UP BLOCK.
CAUTION:
The use of optical instrument with this product will increase eye hazard.
CAUTION
Use of controls or adjustments or performance of procedures other than those specified herein may result in hazardous radiation exposure.
SAFETY-RELATED COMPONENT WARNING!!
COMPONENTS IDENTIFIED BY MARK 0 OR DOTTED LINE WITH MARK 0 ON THE SCHEMATIC DIAGRAMS AND IN THE PARTS LIST ARE CRITICAL TO SAFE OPERATION. REPLACE THESE COMPONENTS WITH SONY PARTS WHOSE PART NUMBERS APPEAR AS SHOWN IN THIS MANUAL OR IN SUPPLEMENTS PUBLISHED BY SONY.
Unleaded solder
Boards requiring use of unleaded solder are printed with the leadfree mark (LF) indicating the solder contains no lead. (Caution: Some printed circuit boards may not come printed with the lead free mark due to their particular size.)
: LEAD FREE MARK
Unleaded solder has the following characteristics.
Unleaded solder melts at a temperature about 40°C higher than
ordinary solder. Ordinary soldering irons can be used but the iron tip has to be applied to the solder joint for a slightly longer time. Soldering irons using a temperature regulator should be set to about 350°C. Caution: The printed pattern (copper foil) may peel away if the heated tip is applied for too long, so be careful!
Strong viscosity Unleaded solder is more viscous (sticky, less prone to flow) than ordinary solder so use caution not to let solder bridges occur such as on IC pins, etc.
Usable with ordinary solder It is best to use only unleaded solder but unleaded solder may also be added to ordinary solder.
SAFETY CHECK-OUT
After correcting the original service problem, perform the following safety checks before releasing the set to the customer.
1. Check the area of your repair for unsoldered or poorly-soldered connections. Check the entire board surface for solder splashes and bridges.
2. Check the interboard wiring to ensure that no wires are "pinched" or contact high-wattage resistors.
3. Look for unauthorized replacement parts, particularly transistors, that were installed during a previous repair . Point them out to the customer and recommend their replacement.
4. Look for parts which, through functioning, show obvious signs of deterioration. Point them out to the customer and recommend their replacement.
5. Check the B+ voltage to see it is at the values specified.
6. Flexible Circuit Board Repairing
Keep the temperature of the soldering iron around 270˚C during repairing.
Do not touch the soldering iron on the same conductor of the circuit board (within 3 times).
Be careful not to apply force on the conductor when soldering or unsoldering.

About MP3 audio tracks
MP3 is audio compression technology that satisfies certain ISO/MPEG regulations. You can play back DATA CDs (CD-ROMs/CDRs/CD-RWs) recorded in MP3 (MPEG1 Audio Layer 3) format. However, the discs must be recorded according to ISO9660 Level 1, Level 2 or Joliet format for the recorder to recognize the tracks. You can also play discs recorded in Multi Session. See the instructions supplied with the CD-R/CDRW drives and the recording software (not supplied) for details on the recording format.
Note on Multi Session discs
If MP3 audio tracks are recorded in the first session, the recorder will a ls o play MP3 audio tracks in other sessions. If audio tracks in Music CD format are recorded in the first session, only the first session will be played back.
Playback order of MP3 audio tracks

• If you add numbers (01, 02, 03, etc.) to the front of the track names when you store the tracks in a disc, the tracks will be played in that order.
• Since a disc with many trees takes longer to star t playback, it is recommended that you create albums with no more than two trees.
Notes
• Depending on the software you use to create the DATA CD, the playback order may differ from the above illustration.
• Proceeding to the next or another album may take some time.
• The recorder may not be able to play some DATA CDs created in the Packet Write format.
• The recorder will play any data with the extension “.MP3,” even if they are not in MP3 format. Playing this data may generate a loud noise which could damage your speaker system.
• The recorder does not conform to audio tracks in MP3PRO format.
• The playback order above may not be applicable if there are more than a total of 999 albums and tracks in the DATA CD.
• The recorder can recognize up to 499 albums (the recorder will count just albums, including albums that do not contain MP3 audio tracks). The recorder will not play any albums beyond the first 499 albums. Of the first 499 albums, the recorder will play no more than a combined total of 999 albums and tracks.
• The recorder can play MP3 audio tracks recorded in th e following sampling frequencies: 32 kHz, 44.1 kHz, 48 kHz.
• Only the letters in the alphabet and numbers can be used for album or track names. Anything else is displayed as “*.”
• ID3 tags cannot be displayed.

RW
VR
You can enjoy advanced edit fun ct io n s . Fir st you have two options for a DVD-RW (VR mode): editing either the original recording (called the “original”), or the playback i nf o r m at ion created from the original (called a “Playlist”). Since each is different in nature and offers differe nt merits, read the following and select the one that better suits your needs.
To edit original titles
Edits made to the original titles are final. If you plan to retain an unaltered original recording, create and edit a Playlist (see below). The edit functions available for origi nal titles are: – Labelling a title (page65). – Setting protection against erasure (page 65). – Erasing a title (page65). – Erasing multiple titles (page66). – Erasing a section of a title (A -B Erase) ( page66).
To create and edit Playlist titles
A Playlist is a group of Playlist tit les cre ated fr om the original title for editing purposes. When you create a Playlist, only the control information necessary for playback, such as the playback order, is stored on the disc. Si nce the origin al title s are left unaltered, Playlist titles can be re-edited.
Example: You have recorded the final few matches of a football tournament on a DVD-RW (VR mode). You want to create a digest with the goal scenes and ot her high lights, but you also wan t to keep the original recording.
In this case, you can compile highlight scenes as a Playlist title. You can even rearrange the scene order within the Playlist title (“Creating and Editing a Playlist” on page 68).
The advanced edit functions available for Playlist titles are: –Labelling a title (page65). –Erasing a title (page65). –Erasing multiple titles (page66). –Erasing a section of a title (A-B Erase) (page66). –Rearranging the title order (page 70). –Dividing a title into multiple titles (page 70). –Combining multiple titles into one title
(page 71).
z Hint
You can display the disc’s Playlist titles in the Title List (Playlist), or the original titles in the Title List (Original). To switch the two Title Lists, press TOOLS while a Title List is displayed, and select “Original” or “Playlist.”
Notes
• The Playlist title calls up data from the original titles for playback. When an original title is use d f o r a Pl a y list title, the original title cannot be erased.

In this section, “dubbing” refers to “copying a recorded title on the internal hard disk drive (HDD) to another disc, or vic e versa.” You can select to dub one title at a time (Title Dubbing – see “Dubbing a Single Title (Title Dub)” on page 74), or multiple tit le s all at once (Multiple Title Dubbing – see “Dubbing Multiple Titles (Dub Selected Titles)” on page 75). Before you start, read the following precautions, which are common to both dubbing methods.
z Hint
This section deals with dubbing to and from the internal HDD. If you want to record from a digital video camera connected to the DV IN jack, see “DV Dubbing” (page 77). To record from equipment connected to the LINE IN jacks, see “Recording From Connected Equipment Without a Timer” (page 52).

About Dub Mode
With this recorder , the recording mode for dubbing is displayed as “Dub Mode.” Two dubbing method are available: High-speed Dubbing and Rec Mode Convers io n D ubbing. Read the following and sel ect according to the required time, disc space, and picture quality.
Dubbing at high-speed (Hig h-speed Dubbing)

HDD
Allows you to dub what you have s to re d i n the HDD to a high-speed DVD (4x-speed DVD+RWs/2x-speed DVD-RWs/8x-speed DVD+Rs/8x-speed DVD-Rs, or slower versions of each disc type), without changing the recording mode. Dubbing speed is incr eased when the recording mode of the original title is of a longer recording mode (such as SLP) . Select “Fast” when selecting the “Dub Mode” in “Dubbing a Single Tit le (Tit l e Dub) ” (pag e74) or “Dubbing Multiple Titles (Dub Selected Titles)” (page 75). The minimum required time is as follows (approximate). Example: When a 120 minute- t it l e is dubbed to a high-speed DVD-R in LP mode, dubbing becomes 12 times faster, and takes a minimum of 10 minutes. (120 minutes y 12 = 10 minutes).

Rec Mode Conversion Dubbin g
Allows you to dub from the HDD to a DVD or vic e versa, in a dubbing mode that di ffers from the original recordings. For exampl e, w he n you dub an HQ title (data size is large) in SP mode, you can reduce the data size, saving more titles using less space. Select a mode different from the original recording in “Dub Mode” in the steps of “Dubbing a Single Title (Title Dub)” (page74) or “Dubbing Multiple Titles (Dub Selected Titles)” (page 75).
