SOLID LIFTER CONVERSION KIT (1167-0043)
Convert early style hydraulic lifters to solid tappets with this easy to install kit from Rivera Primo Inc.. Solid lifters, when adjusted correctly, are quiet; dependable, and produce more horsepower than hydraulic lifters. Solid lifters are also very easy to maintain. This kit can be un-installed to return lifters to their previous hydraulic function. You must reinstall the previously removed hydraulic units.
REMOVING THE OLD TAPPETS:
1) Secure the motorcycle or motor on a stand that allows convenient access to valve train components. Disconnect the ground battery cable, remove spark plugs, and raise the rear wheel of the motorcycle off the surface of the stand.
2) Adjust the pushrod to a length that allows them to be removed.
3) Carefully remove the lifter blocks and lifters so as to not damage the gasket surfaces (do not pry the lifter blocks to loosen them). Remove the lifters from the lifter bases, mark the lifters so that they can be reinstalled in the exact location from which they were removed, I.E. front exhaust lifter must be re-installed in the front exhaust lifter base hole.
INSTALL THE CONVERSION KIT AS FOLLOWS:
1) Remove the existing hydraulic units from the lifter body, and drain the oil. Install the push-rod seat with Oring into the lifter body.
2) Plug the oil hole in the lifter body with the supplied rivets, using a small dab of red thread locker. Tap the rivet home with a small hammer.
3) Install the modified lifters into their designated locations (as previously marked).
4) Using new gaskets, install the lifter block with lifters using a Jim’s USA® alignment tool (Rivera part# 3202-
0004) to ensure proper lifter base location.
5) Adjust/Shorten the Taper-Lite™ push rods to allow installation. Install push rods simultaneously with push rod covers and adjust as follows:
1. To adjust solid lifters, bring the front piston to TDC (top dead center) on the compression stroke. Install the front intake push rod and lengthen until light-to-moderate resistance is felt (cold motor) when rolled with the fingertips. Carefully lock the push rod adjuster so as not to change the adjustment. Install the front exhaust push rod (with push rod cover), and repeat the previous steps. Always install & adjust the intake push rod first then the exhaust. .
2. By hand, slowly rotate the motor until the rear cylinder is at TDC on the compression stroke (turning the rear wheel with the transmission in 3rd gear), and repeat the push rod installation/adjustment on the rear cylinder. Replace the push rod clips, and you're ready to ride.
