ReliOn® blood pressure monitor - one of the most
technologically advanced monitors available to­day. Designed for ease of use and accuracy, this
monitor will facilitate your daily blood pressure
regimen.

Physicians agree that daily self-monitoring of
blood pressure is an important step individuals
can take to maintain cardiovascular health and
prevent the serious consequences associated with
undetected and untreated hypertension.

THIS MONITOR IS CLINICALLY VALIDATED

This ReliOn® blood pressure monitor has undergone and passed a Clinical
Validation study to determine the performance and accuracy. This monitor is
clinically validated according to the European Society of Hypertension (ESH)
standard. The ESH is one of the most prestigiuos international blood pres­sure organizations. The published study was performed by a reviewing com­mittee consisting of physicians and/or nurses.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

Please be sure to read this instruction manual thoroughly to fully understand
your monitor's operation, cautions, performance and limitations. After fully
acquainting yourself with the manual, please keep it with your monitor.

replace regular medical examinations.

Because your UA-787REL monitor contains delicate, high-precision ☞

parts, avoid exposing it to extremes in temperature or humidity or to
direct sunlight, shock and dust. ReliOn® guarantees the accuracy of
this monitor only when it is stored and used within the temperature and
humidity ranges noted on page E-18.

Clean the monitor and cuff with a dry, soft cloth or a cloth dampened ☞
with water and a mild detergent. Never use alcohol, benzene, thinner or
other harsh chemicals to clean monitor or cuff.

Remove and replace batteries if monitor is not used for more than six ☞
months. Alkaline batteries recommended.

PRECAUTIONS

The UA-787REL is designed to be used at home, by those who are eighteen (18)
years and older, to monitor blood pressure (systolic and diastolic) and pulse rate.

HOW UA-787REL WORKS

ReliOn® blood pressure monitors are easy to use, accurate and digitally dis­play full measurement readouts. Our technology is based on the “oscillometric
method” – a noninvasive blood pressure determination. The term “oscilla­tion” refers to any measure of vibrations caused by the arterial pulse. Our
monitor examines the pulsatile pressure generated by the arterial wall as it
expands and contracts against the cuff with each heartbeat.

The cuff is inflated until the artery is fully blocked. The inflation speed is
maximized and the pressure level is optimized by the device. The monitor
takes measurements while the cuff is both inflating and deflating. This results
in a faster measurement providing greater comfort to the user.

BEFORE YOU START

You must install 4 type AA (1.5 volt) batteries (alkaline batteries recommend­ed), or use the AC Adapter (see page E-11 for using the Monitor with AC
Adapter) and attach the cuff to the monitor before using it. To install batteries
(or replace them if the “Low Battery” symbol appears on display), proceed as
follows:

INSTALLING THE CUFF HOLDER

This monitor comes equipped with a removable cuff holdler for your conve­nience. When not in use, simply slip your Easy Wrap cuff into the holder for
storage.

To install the cuff holder:

Align the cuff holder with the rear of the blood pressure 1.
monitor.

Slide the cuff holder into the rear of the blood pressure 2.
monitor until it snaps securely into place.

To remove the cuff holder:

Push the tab on the cuff holder away from the blood 1.

SELECTING THE CORRECT CUFF SIZE

Using the right sized cuff is essential for an accurate measurement. Our
unique Easy Wrap cuff is designed to accommodate most arm sizes, from
9-17” (23-43 cm). The Easy Wrap cuff is contoured to provide you with a
quick and comfortable fit. Just slide the cuff onto your upper arm and secure
– it’s that simple! To place the cuff on properly, please read the section Taking
Your Blood Pressure (see pg. E-5).

If your arm circumference is greater than 17” (43 cm) or smaller than 9”
(23 cm), you will need to purchase a difference size cuff than the one that is

TAKING YOUR BLOOD PRESSURE

Tips for Blood Pressure Monitoring:

Relax for about 5 minutes before measurement. ☞
Do not smoke or ingest caffeine at least 30 minutes prior to measure- ☞

ment.
Remove constricting clothing and place cuff on bare arm. ☞
Unless your physician recommends otherwise, use left arm to measure ☞

pressure.
Do not talk during measurement. ☞
Do not cross legs and keep your feet at on oor during measurement. ☞

Now you are ready. Follow these simple steps:

Press the START button. The average reading (see Pg. E-9) is displayed, 4.
the cuff pressurizes, measurement will begin and the Cuff Inflation Meter
will show on the display screen. It is normal for the cuff to feel very tight.

Note: If an appropriate pressure is not obtained, the device
automatically starts to inflate again.

Caution: If you wish to stop inflation at any time, press the

START/STOP button again.

When the measurement is complete, the systolic and diastolic pressure 5.
readings and pulse rate are displayed. The cuff deflates and the monitor
automatically shuts off after 60 seconds, or you can turn it off by pressing
the START button. Your measurement is automatically stored in memory
(the monitor can store up to 90 readings in memory).

WHAT IS AN IRREGULAR HEARTBEAT

The UA-787REL Blood Pressure Monitor provides a blood pressure and pulse
rate measurement even when an irregular heartbeat is detected. The Irregular
Heartbeat symbol will appear in the display window in the event an
Irregular Heartbeat has occured during measurement. An irregular heartbeat
is defined as a heartbeat that varies by 25% from the average of all heartbeat
intervals during the blood pressure measurement. It is important that you
relax, remain still and refrain from talking during measurements.

NOTE: We recommend contacting your physician if you see this

symbol frequently.

ABOUT THE CUFF INFLATION METER

The Cuff Inflation Meter is located on the left side of the display screen to tell
you when the blood pressure monitor is inflating and deflating the cuff. The
Cuff Inflation Meter moves up during inflation and moves down during defla­tion.

The UA-787REL provides an average blood pressure reading based on the
total measurements stored in memory. The average blood pressure reading
appears briefly when you push the start button.

The Pressure Rating Indicator™ is
a feature which provides a snapshot
of your blood pressure classification
based on your measurements. This
will let you quickly know what your
blood pressure readings mean. Each
segment of the bar indicator corre­sponds to the Seventh Report of the
Joint National Committee (JNC7) on
Prevention, Evaluation and Treatment
of High Blood Pressure from the
National Heart, Lung and Blood
Institute - May 2003. For a more

USING THE MONITOR WITH AC ADAPTER

The UA-787REL has an AC adapter jack to allow you to supply power from
an outlet in your home. We recommend you use only the supplied AC adapter
to avoid potential damage to the monitor.

Connecting the AC adapter to the monitor:

Gently insert the AC adapter plug into a 120V AC outlet.1.
Connect the AC adapter plug into the jack on the right side of the monitor. 2.

Disconnecting the AC adapter from the monitor:

Turn the unit off by pressing the START button.1.
Disconnect the plug from the jack of the monitor quickly. 2.
Gently remove the AC adapter from the outlet.3.

What Is Blood Pressure? ■

Blood pressure is the force exerted by blood against the walls of the arteries.
Systolic pressure occurs when the heart contracts; diastolic pressure occurs
when the heart expands. Blood pressure is measured in millimeters of mer­cury (mmHg).

What Affects Blood Pressure? ■

Blood pressure is affected by many factors: age, weight, time of day, activ­ity level, climate, altitude and season. Certain activities can significantly alter
one’s blood pressure. Walking can raise systolic pressure by 12 mmHg and
diastolic pressure by 5.5 mmHg. Sleeping can decrease systolic blood pressure
by as much as 10 mmHg. Taking your blood pressure repeatedly without wait­ing an interval of 2 - 3 minutes between readings, or without raising your arm
to allow blood to flow back to the heart, can also affect it. In addition to these
factors, beverages containing caffeine or alcohol, certain medications, emotional
stress and even tight-fitting clothes can make a difference in the readings.

What Causes Variations In Blood Pressure? ■

An individual’s blood pressure varies greatly from day to day and season to
season. For hypersensitive individuals, these variations are even more pro­nounced. Normally, blood pressure rises during work or play and falls to its
lowest levels during sleep.

Assessing High Blood Pressure for Adults ■

The following standards for assessing high blood pressure (without regard to
age or gender) have been established as a guideline. Please note that other risk
factors (e.g. diabetes, obesity, smoking, etc.) need to be taken into consideration
and may affect these figures. Consult with your physician for an accurate
assessment.

What Is Hypertension? ■

Hypertension (high blood pressure) is the diagnosis given when readings
consistently rise above normal. It is well known that hypertension can lead to
stroke, heart attack or other illness if left untreated. Referred to as a “silent
killer” because it does not always produce symptoms that alert you to the
problem, hypertension is treatable when diagnosed early.

Can Hypertension Be Controlled? ■

In many individuals, hypertension can be controlled by altering lifestyle and
minimizing stress, and by appropriate medication prescribed and monitored
by your doctor. The American Heart Association recommends the following
lifestyle suggestions to prevent or control hypertension:

Don’t smoke. ●
Have regular physical checkups. ●
Reduce salt and fat intake. ●
Maintain proper weight. ●
Monitor your blood pressure at periodic intervals. ●
Exercise routinely. ●

Why Measure Blood Pressure at Home? ■

It is now well known that, for many individuals, blood pressure readings taken
in a doctor’s office or hospital setting might be elevated as a result of appre­hension and anxiety. This response is commonly called “white coat hyperten­sion.” In any case, self-measurement at home supplements your doctor’s read­ings and provides a more accurate, complete blood pressure history. In addi­tion, clinical studies have shown that the detection and treatment of hyperten­sion is improved when patients both consult their physicians and monitor their
own blood pressure at home.

Answers to Why Your Readings Are Different Between ■

Home and at the Doctor’s Office

Your blood pressure readings taken in a doctor’s office or hospital setting may
be elevated as a result of apprehension and anxiety. This response is known as
white coat hypertension.

When I bring my monitor to a doctor’s office, why do I get a
different measurement from my monitor to that taken by a
doctor or nurse?

The healthcare professional may be using a different sized cuff. The size of
the bladder inside the cuff is critical for the accuracy of the measurement.
This may give you a different reading. A cuff too large will produce a reading
that is lower than the correct blood pressure; a cuff that is too small will pro­duce a reading that is higher than the correct blood pressure. There may also
be other factors that can cause the difference in measurements.

Keys to Successful Monitoring: ■

Blood pressure fluctuates throughout the day. We recommend that you are
consistent in your daily measurement routine:

Measure at the same time each day. ●
Sit in the same chair/position. ●

Do not cross legs and keep your feet at on the oor. ●

Relax for 5 minutes before measurement. ●
Use the correct cuff size to get an accurate reading. ●
Sit still during measurement – no talking, eating or sudden movements. ●
Record your measurement in the logbook. ●

Establishing Baseline Measurements ■

The most important method to get an accurate blood pressure measurement
is consistency. To get the most benefit out of your monitor, it is important
to establish a “baseline measurement.” This helps build a foundation of
measurements that you can use to compare against future readings. To build
this baseline measurement, devote two weeks for consistent blood pressure
monitoring. This involves doing everything the same way when you measure
(e.g. measuring during the same time of day, in the same location, sitting in
the same chair, using the same cuff, etc.). Once you establish your baseline
measurement, you can start evaluating if your measurement has been affected
based on things lifestyle changes or medication treatment.

How Do I Record My Blood Pressure? ■

Blood pressure readings are typically recorded with the systolic pressure writ­ten first, followed by a slash mark and the diastolic pressure. For example, 120
mmHg systolic and 80 mmHg diastolic measurements are written as 120/80.
Pulse is simply written with the letter “P” followed by the pulse rate—P 72,
for example. Please see the back of the manual for the blood pressure tracking
log.

A&D Medical (the “Company”) warrants to the first retail purchaser that this
Digital Blood Pressure Monitor (the “Product”) will be free from defects in material
and workmanship for the life of the original owner. To obtain warranty service
for such defects, return the Product, freight and insurance prepaid, together with

FUNCIONAMIENTO DEL UA-787REL

Los monitores de presión arterial ReliOn® son fáciles de utilizar y presentan
lecturas digitales exactas de mediciones completas . Nuestra tecnología se
basa en el “método oscilometrico”, una forma no invasiva de determinar la
presión arterial. El termino “oscilación” hace referencia a cualquier medición
de las vibraciones producidas por el pulso arterial. Nuestro monitor examina
la presión pulsátil que la expansión y contracción de la pared arterial generan
contra el brazalete con cada latido cardíaco.

El brazalete se infla hasta que la arteria quede totalmente bloqueada. El
dispositivo maximiza la velocidad de inflado y nivel de la presión. El moni­tor mide la presión mientras el brazalete se infla o desinfla. Como resultado
se obtiene una medición mas rapida que proporcione mayor comodidad al
usuario.

ANTES DE COMENZAR

Antes de utilizar este dispositivo, debe instalar4 pilas tipo AA (1.5 voltios) o
usar el adaptador de CA (consulte la pagina S-11 para usar el monitor con el
adaptador CA) y conectar el brazalete al monitor. Para instalar las pilas ( o
cambiarlas, si en la pantalla aparece el simbolo de pilas bajas), proceda como
se indica a continuación:

Coloque primero la fila inferior 2.

INSTALANDO EL SOSTÉN DEL BRAZALETE

Este monitor viene equipado con un brazalete desmontable para su conve­nencia. Cuando no está en uso, simplemente resbale su Easy Wrap brazalete
dentro el sostén para almacenimiento.

Para instalar el sostén del brazalete:

Alineé el brazalete con la parte posterior del monitor de 1.
presión arterial.

Resbale el brazalete entre la parta posterior del monitor 2.
de presión arterial hasta que se ajuste bien en su lugar.

Para remover el sostén de brazalete:

Oprima la etiqueta del sostén del brazalete desplegan-1.

ELECCIÓN DEL TAMAÑO CORRECTO DE
BRAZALETE

Para obtener una medición exacta es esencial utilizar un brazalete del tamaño
correcto. Nuestro exclusivo brazalete Easy Wrap está diseñado para adaptarse
a la circunferencias de brazos de 9-17” (23-43 cm). La forma del brazalete
Easy Wrap le permite ajustarlo en forma rápida y cómoda. Deslice el braza­lete hasta la parte superior del brazo y sujételo. ¡Asi de facil! Para colocar el
brazalete correctamente, lea la sección Medición de la presión arterial (con­sulte la pagina S-5)

Si la circunferencia de su brazo es mas de 17” (43 cm) o menos de 9” (23
cm), va necesitar comprar un brazalete de diferente tamaño aparte de lo que

MEDICIÓN DE LA PRESIÓN ARTERIAL

Consejos para medir la presión arterial:

Relájese durante 5 minutos antes de medirse la presión. ☞
No fume ni ingiera cafeína por un minimo de 30 minutos antes de la ☞

medición.
Quítese cualquier ropa ceñida y coloque el brazalete sobre el brazo ☞

desnudo.
A menos que el médico indique lo contrario, mídase la presión en el ☞

brazo izquierdo.
Permanezsca en silencio durante la medición. ☞
No cruce las piernas y mantenga los pies apoyados en el piso durante la ☞

medición.

Ahora puede comenzar. Siga los siguientes pasos:

brazo izquierdo apoyado en una
superficie plana, de manera que
el centro de la parte superior
del brazo (entre el hombro y el
codo) esté a la misma altura que
el corazón.

brazo, con el tubo apuntando en direc­ción opuesta a usted. Ahora, desvíe
el tubo hacia el lado interno del brazo

dedo meñique.

Sujete el brazalete Easy Wrap alrededor del 3.
brazo. El brazalete debe quedar ajustado
pero no demasiado apretado. Debe quedar
espacio para introducir dos dedos entre el
brazalete y el brazo.

Presione la tecla START. El medido promedio (mire Pg. S-9) está mostra-4.
do. El brazalete se presuriza, comienza la medición y aparece el medidor
de inflado del brazalete en la pantalla. Es normal sentir muy apretado el
brazalete.

Nota: si no se logra una presión adecuada, el dispositivo

automáticamente comienza a inflarse de nuevo. Para
interrumpir el inflado en cualquier momento, vuelva a
presionar la tecla START.

Al concluir la medición, en la pantalla aparecen las lecturas de la pre-5.
sión sistólica y la presión diastólica, asi como la frequencia del pulso. El
brazalete se desinfla y el monitor se apaga automáticamente al pasar 60
segundos, o puede apagarlo manualmente presionando la tecla START.
La medición se guarda automáticamente en la memoria (el monitor puede
guardar un maximo de 90 lecturas en la memoria).

Retire el brazalete y anote la medición de la presión arterial y el pulso 6.
en la tabla del Registro de la presión arterial que se encuentra al final del
manual. Indique la fecha y la hora de la medición.

IMPORTANTE: procure medirse la presión arterial a la misma hora

MEDICIÓN DE LA PRESIÓN ARTERIAL

Medicion con la presión sistólica deseada:

Cuando es muy probable que la presión sistólica supere los 230 mm Hg, siga
los siguientes pasos:

Coloque el brazalete en el brazo izquierdo, a menos que el medico le 1.
indique lo contrario.

Mantenga la tecla START presionada hasta que aparezca un numero 2.
entre 30 y 40 mm Hg superior a la presión sistólica esperada.

Cuando aparezca el numero deseado, suelte la tecla START. El monitor 3.
puede registrar una presión maxima de 280 mm Hg. Ahora comienza la
medición. Prosiga con la medición de su presión arterial como se indica
en la pagina S-5.

RITMO CARDÍACO IRREGULAR

El Monitor de presión arterial UA-787REL provee la lectura de la presión
arterial y la frequencia del pulso aun cuando se producen latidos cardíacos
irregulares. Si ha producido un latido cardiaco irregular durante la med­ición, aparecerá el símbolo de latido cardíaco irregular en la pantalla.
Un latido cardíaco irregular se define como un latido que varia en un 25%
del promedio de todos los intervalos entre los latidos del corazón registrados
durante la medición de la presión arterial. Es importante que usted se relaje y
permanezca quieto y sin hablar durante las mediciones.

NOTA: se recomienda ponerse en contacto con el médico si

observa este símbolo con frecuencia..

ACERCA DEL MEDIDOR DE INFLADO DEL
BRAZALETE

El medidor de inflado del brazalete, que se encuentra a la izquierda de la pan­talla, le indicará cuando el monitor está inflando o desinflando el brazalete.

El UA-787REL provee una lectura promedio de la presión arterial en base
al total de las lecturas guardadas en la memoria. La lectura promedio de las
mediciones de la presión arterial aparece brevemente cuando se recuperan las

memoria. Se guarda la información siempre y cuando se
mantengan las pilas colocadas en el dispositivo. Si se
retiran o agotan las pilas, la información se borrará.

USO DEL MONITOR CON EL ADAPTADOR DE CA

El UA-787REL tiene un adaptador CA que permite cargarse de una toma de
corriente en su hogar, se recomienda utilizar unicamente el adaptador de CA
incluido para evitar possible daños al monitor.

Conexion del adaptador de CA al monitor:

Conecte cuidadosamente el enchufe del adaptador de CA en una toma de 1.
corriente 120V ca.

Conecte el enchufe del adaptador de CA a la conexión hembra en la parte 2.
posterior del monitor.

Desconexión del adaptador de CA del monitor:

¿Qué es la presión arterial? ■

La presión arterial es la fuerza que ejerce la sangre contra las paredes de
las arterias. La presión sistólica se produce cuando el corazón se contrae, y
la diastólica cuando el corazón se expande. La presión arterial se mide en
milímetros de mercurio (mm Hg).

¿Qué factores afectan a la presión arterial? ■

Existen muchos factores que afectan a la presión arterial: la edad, el peso, la
hora del día, el nivel de actividad, el clima, la altitud y la estación del año.
Ciertas actividades pueden modificar considerablemente la presión arterial.
Por ejemplo, caminar puede elevar la presión sistólica en 12 mm Hg y la
presión diastólica en 5.5 mm Hg Al dormir, la presión sistólica puede disminu­ir hasta 10 mm Hg. Además, los valores de la presión arterial pueden variar
también si se efectúan mediciones repetidas sin esperar entre 2 y 3 minutos
entre las lecturas, o sin elevar el brazo para permitir que la sangre fluya de
vuelta al corazón.

Además de estos factores, ciertos refrescos que contienen cafeína o alcohol,
algunos medicamentos, el estrés emocional e incluso la ropa ceñida pueden
ocasionar variaciones en las lecturas.

¿Cuáles son las causas de las variaciones de la ■

presión arterial?

La presión arterial de una persona fluctúa considerablemente de un día a otro
y de una estación del año a otra. En personas hipersensibles, estas variaciones
son aún más marcadas. Por lo general, la presión arterial aumenta durante el
trabajo o el juego y desciende a sus niveles más bajos durante el sueño.

Evaluación de la presión arterial elevada en adultos ■

Se han establecido como guía para la evaluación de la presión arterial elevada
(independientemente de la edad o el sexo) los siguientes estándares. Tenga en
cuenta que es necesario considerar otros factores de riesgo (por ejemplo, la
diabetes, la obesidad, el hábito de fumar, etc.) que posiblemente afecten a estos
valores. Consulte con el médico para obtener una evaluación precisa.

¿Qué es la hipertensión ■

Hipertensión (presión arterial elevada) es el diagnóstico proporcionado cuando
las lecturas de la presión arterial son sistemáticamente superiores a las nor­males. Se sabe que la hipertensión, si no se trata, puede provocar accidentes
cerebrovasculares, ataques cardíacos y otras enfermedades. Se le conoce como
“asesino silencioso” ya que no siempre produce síntomas de advertencia sobre
la presencia del problema; la hipertensión puede tratarse si se diagnostica en
forma temprana.

¿Es posible controlar la hipertensión? ■

Muchas personas pueden controlar la hipertensión mediante la modificación
del estilo de vida, la reducción al mínimo del estrés y el uso de medica­mentos adecuados recetados y monitorizados por el médico. La Asociación
Americana del Corazón (AHA, American Heart Association) recomienda
adoptar los siguientes hábitos de vida para prevenir o controlar la hiperten­sión:

No fumar. ●
Disminuir el consumo de sal y grasa. ●
Monitorizar la presión arterial periódicamente. ●
Someterse a exámenes médicos periódicos. ●
Mantener el peso adecuado. ●
Hacer ejercicio en forma regular. ●

¿Cuál es la ventaja de medirse la presión arterial en el ■

hogar?

En la actualidad se sabe a ciencia cierta que, para muchas personas, las
lecturas de la presión arterial efectuadas en el consultorio del médico o en
hospitales pueden resultar elevadas debido al nerviosismo y a la ansiedad.
Esta respuesta se conoce comúnmente como “hipertensión del consultorio”.
De todos modos, la automedición en el hogar complementa las lecturas del
médico y proporciona un historial más exacto y completo de la presión arte­rial. Además, se ha demostrado en estudios clínicos que la detección y el
tratamiento de la hipertensión mejoran cuando los pacientes combinan las
consultas médicas con la monitorización de la presión arterial en el hogar.

se obtengan en el hogar o en el consultorio médico.

¿Por qué varían las lecturas según se obtengan en el hogar o
en el consultorio médico?

Es posible que las lecturas de la presión arterial obtenidas en el consultorio
médico o en un hospital aumenten como consecuencia del nerviosismo y la
ansiedad. Esta respuesta se conoce como hipertensión del consultorio.

Cuando llevo mi monitor al consultorio médico, ¿por qué
obtengo en mi monitor una medición diferente de la que
obtiene un médico o una enfermera?

Es posible que el médico esté utilizando un brazalete de distinto tamaño. El
tamaño de la cámara de aire en el interior del brazalete es fundamental para
lograr una medición precisa. Esto puede provocar una lectura diferente. Si el
brazalete es demasiado grande, se obtendrá una lectura inferior a la presión
arterial correcta; si el brazalete es muy pequeño producirá una lectura mayor
que la correcta. Pueden existir además otros factores que ocasionan diferen­cias entre las mediciones.

Consejos para obtener mediciones satisfactorias: ■

La presión arterial fluctúa en el transcurso del día. Se recomienda que el usu­ario sea constante respecto de la rutina diaria para tomar las mediciones:

Mídase la presión todos los días a la misma hora. ●
Siéntese en la misma silla o posición. ●
No cruce las piernas y mantenga los pies apoyados en el piso. ●
Antes de medirse la presión, relájese durante 5 minutos ●
Para obtener una lectura precisa, utilice el tamaño correcto de braza- ●

lete.
Permanezca sentado e inmóvil durante la medición. No hable, coma ●

ni haga movimientos repentinos.
Anote las mediciones en el registro de presión arterial. ●

Registro de un valor de referencia ■

El método más importante para obtener una medición exacta de la presión
arterial es la consistencia. Para aprovechar el monitor al máximo, es impor­tante establecer un “valor de referencia”. Esto permite crear una base de
medidas que pueden utilizarse para realizar una comparación con lecturas
futuras. Para crear este valor de referencia, dedique dos semanas a moni­torizar regularmente su presión arterial. Esto implica hacer todo de la misma
manera cuando se mide la presión (por ejemplo, medirla en la misma hora del
día, en el mismo lugar, sentado en la misma silla, usando el mismo brazalete,
etc.). Una vez que haya establecido el valor de referencia, puede comenzar a
evaluar si la medición presenta variaciones en función de cambios en el estilo
de vida o el tratamiento con medicamentos.

¿Cómo registro la presión arterial? ■

Comúnmente, las lecturas de la presión arterial se registran escribiendo prim­ero el valor de la presión sistólica seguido de una diagonal y luego el de la
diastólica. Por ejemplo, una medición de 120 mm Hg de presión sistólica y de
80 mm Hg de presión diastólica se representa como 120/80. Para el pulso se
anota la letra “P” seguida de la frecuencia del pulso; por ejemplo,
P 72. En el dorso del manual se incluye un registro de presión arterial.
