First Things First
Welcome To Your New VCR...
To help you get started using your dual deck VCR with as little reading as possible, weve put all the basic information needed in the first three sections of this manual. To help you along, there’s even an automatic setup feature the first time you turn on the VCR which walks you through several setup steps at once.
Getting Started
Before this first step, though, learning about the time and date, your remote control’s features, working with channels, and basic video tape operations are essential to get all you can out of the VCR. Once you are comfortable with these features, feel free to refer to other sections of the manual because they cover the more detailed information of the dual deck.

If the VCR is connected to an antenna or cable system and then to the TV, use the supplied RF cable and the VCRs IN (FROM ANT.) and OUT (TO TV) jacks to connect. This provides a good signal (see the diagram to the right).
If the TV has Audio/Video (A/V) jacks, use A/V cables to connect the VCR to a TV for a better picture. See the Connections section in this manual for additional connection options.
STEP 4: PLUG IN THE VCR
The VCR’s power cord has a plastic band strung through the blades. Remove the plastic band before plugging
the cord into the power outlet. To remove, cut the band with a pair of scissors and pull it free of the blades. Once the plastic is removed, match the wide blade of the power cord to the wide slot in the AC outlet. Be sure to insert the plug completely.
4
First Things First
STEP 5: Tune THE TV
Tune the TV to the VCR viewing channel. The VCR viewing channel is channel 3 or 4 (corresponding to the CH. 3/4 switch on the back panel), or the TV’s video line input if using A/V cables.
If connecting the VCR to the TV with the IN (FROM ANT.) and OUT (TO TV) jacks using RF coaxial cable, set the CH. 3/4 switch to whichever channel number isn’t used in your area. This is the same channel you will tune your TV to see the VCR’s display.
If the VCR is connected to the TV using the A/V jacks and cables, select the TVs video line input to see the VCR’s signal. See “How to Find the TV’s Video Input Channel” in the References section of this manual for a detailed explanation of video line input.
STEP 6: turn on the VCR
Press the POWER button on the remote control or VCR front panel to turn on the VCR. The first time the VCR is turned on, a menu screen appears with different languages to choose from. This is the start of an initial set up which helps you set various VCR options.

The CH. 3/4 switch on the back of the VCR determines which TV channel is used to see the VCR’s output.
When using the Audio/Video jacks to connect the VCR, tune the TV to the its Video Input channel to see the VCR’s picture.
See How to Find the TV’s Video Input Channel in the References section of this manual for more information about video line input.
Step 7: Initial Setup
The first on-screen menu during the initial set up determines which language you prefer to use for all the VCRs on-screen displays. Use the remote controls number buttons to select the corresponding language.

The remaining menus in the setup will appear in the chosen language. Just follow the step-by-step screens until setup is complete.
If the menu does not appear:

First Things First
Make sure the TV is tuned to the same channel as the CH. 3/4 switch for RF connections or the TV’s video input channel for A/V connections (see How to Find the TV’s Video Input Channel” in the References section of this manual for information about using A/V connections).
If the VCR is connected using the IN (FROM ANT.) and OUT (TO TV) jacks, make sure the VCR indicator is on in the front panel display. If not, press the TV/VCR button on the VCRs front panel.
Check the VCRs connections to make sure they are correct and snug.
If you choose to set up the VCR’s options individually, then go to the manual’s next section for detailed instructions.
STEP 8: Access the menus
The MENU and number buttons let you access, select, and change the VCRs display preferences. For example, to select a different preferred on-screen language than the one selected during the initial set up, do the following:
1. Press MENU to display the VCR’s MAIN MENU.

All other on-screen menus work in similar ways; using the remote control’s buttons to highlight and select, and by following on-screen instructions.
See the next section, Additional Set-Up Features, for detailed information about accessing menus.
Selecting Menu Choices
On-screen menu options can be highlighted by either using the matching number button on the remote control, or the up, down, and right (>) remote control buttons.

2. Press 5 on the remote control repeatedly to toggle through available languages; English (Language ), French (Langue), or Spanish (Idioma).
When the menu displays the preferred language, press the MENU button to exit. All on-screen menus will appear in the selected language.
Cable Box Setup
This setup applies only when all channels are received through a cable box. If you use a cable box to view only premium channels, skip this setup.
So that the VCR knows which channel to use for cable programming, you must first set the menu preferences. Whether its channel 3, 4, or the video input channel, you must first tell the VCR which.
Selecting Menu Choices
Select menu options by either pressing the corresponding number button on the remote control, or by using the up and down arrow buttons to highlight a numbered menu item, and the right arrow button to select it.
To Set Up the VCR For Use With a Cable Box:

Off will turn off cable box access from the VCR.
Selecting the Tuner Band
Selecting the tuner band determines what kind of signal to which the VCR will tune channels. You can select between cable, antenna, or auto. Selecting automatic will determine which kind of signal the VCR should look for without any further prompting.
Video Line Input
You can make the VCR tune to its video line input by pressing the INPUT button on the remote control while in VCR mode. For more information on this feature, see, How to Find the TV’s Video Input Channel” in the Reference section of this manual.

SAP Plays back sound from a dual broadcast, or
SAP, recording. This can be used for simulcast programs, those broadcast with both English and another language.
TV+SAP Plays back sound from both the standard
audio signal and the SAP audio signal. This feature is helpful when recording from one deck to another. The recording will be able to play back either standard audio or SAP audio.
Time and Date
The VCR gives you two ways to set the time and date; automatically or manually. The Auto Clock Set feature enables the VCR to update the clock each time the VCR is turned off. Auto Clock is advantageous because it updates the time for you automatically.
The second way of entering the time and date is manually using the menu system.
12
Time/Date Display
Pressing INFO displays the time and date on the screen temporarily.
Setting Up the VCR
Auto Clock Set Feature
The Auto Clock feature is set to ON at the factory, but there are certain steps required before time is set correctly. First, the VCR must have an accurate channel list, so if one is not preinstalled at the factory, Auto Channel Search must be completed (see previous pages for details). Also the time zone, and daylight-saving settings must be accurate (they are set to Auto if Auto Clock Set is activated, but can be changed if necessary).

With a cable box, the VCR will not reset the clock after a power outage unless the cable box is set to the channel carrying the broadcast signal.
If Auto Clock Set is unsuccessful, try tuning the VCR (or cable box) to a channel carrying XDS time data (usually PBS), then turn the VCR off. If the time does not set within 10 minutes, set the time and date manually through the Time menu.
Check the local cable or TV stations for availability of channels with XDS time information.

Using the VCR Plus+ programming system can make taping timer recordings for cable or off-air antenna easier. Just look up the PlusCode® programming number in local TV listings and enter it into the VCR Plus+ menu.
The first step to using this feature is to match local TV channels to the VCR Plus+ system’s preassigned channels. This called “mapping” channels. A worksheet and abbreviated codes for typical cable services in the U.S. and Canada are provided.
VCR Plus+ and PlusCode are registered trademarks of Gemstar Development Corporation. The VCR Plus+ system is manufactured under license from Gemstar Development Corporation.
