New Features and Enhancements 0

Important Notes

i6000 i8 0

To access the new i6000 features, your existing i2000 unit needs to be licensed and converted to an i6000 model. Any Scalar i2000 library can be upgraded to a Scalar i6000. Please contact your local Quantum representative for details.
To upgrade to the i8 version, you will need a 4GB
compact flash drive.
Hardware Enhancements 0
HP LTO-5 Drive Support 0
The Scalar i6000 supports the HP LTO-5 FC drive, which delivers 8 Gbps data speed functioning as a storage networking (SNW) drive. The LTO-5 drives can be configured with either an Ethernet Expansion blade (recommended) connection or a FC I/O blade connection, depending on which type of drive is purchased.
Increased Storage Capacity
The Scalar i6000 allows the addition of up to eleven expansion modules for a total of twelve modules in a library configuration. The additional expansion modules in positions nine through twelve are storage-only expansion modules and are designed solely for LTO cartridge storage.
0
Ethernet Expansion Blade
The Ethernet Expansion blade (EEB) enables the licensed Storage Networking functionality using the HP LTO-5 drive. The EEB provides a library control path via the drives for library commands and facilitates taking drive logs and downloading drive firmware. Each EEB has six Ethernet ports to allow attachment to six LTO-5 drives.
72-Slot I/E Station Option
The Scalar i6000 provides the option of upgrading to a 72-slot I/E station in the first seven expansion modules. The 72-slot I/E station enables you to import and export cartridges without interrupting normal library operations. It consists of two 36-slot I/E station doors mounted in an expansion module door and provides twelve removable magazines which can hold up to 72 LTO cartridges.
Aisle Lights
Aisle lights are an optional feature that provide blue LED illumination to a library configuration system. The aisle light hardware option must be purchased for your entire configuration. The aisle light upgrade feature requires certain hardware levels be present in the Scalar i2000/i6000 library. Not all Scalar i2000’s in the install base have the necessary hardware features. To qualify for the aisle light option, your Control Module serial number in the i2000/i6000 library configuration must be at least 203102253 or begin with 2631xxxxx.

MeDIA Test Reports
The MeDIA Test feature provides the ability to evaluate media as part of long term data retention prior to rotating it back into usage.
Extended I/E
Extended I/E increases the I/E slot count (up to 250 total) for a partition with storage slots that will be reported to a host as I/E slots. Thus, Extended I/E allows the user to configure their partitions with I/E slots beyond the number of physical I/E slots configured in the library. As a result, the host can export more media than previously allowed.
Storage Networking
Storage Networking is a licensable feature that provides access to the advantage of the host access configuration features of 8 Gbps/LTO-5 tape drives, without those drives being connected to a 4 Gbps/Fibre Channel I/O blade.
Resolved Issues
The Scalar i6000 i8 release has addressed and resolved many previously identified issues. For more information about issues corrected in this release, see on page 5.

At this time, do not use the Device Type filter of I/E station. All other filters work.
All direct FC attached HP LTO5 drives (with EEBs) that are connected to a switch should be set to FC point-topoint mode instead of the default loop mode.
If a MeDIA scan (normal or full) completes and any of the media show the scan status as Test in Progress after being tested, look for tape alerts against the media or drive in question. The tape may and probably does have issues, which the tape alerts will clarify.

8 Known Issues
1G is not an acceptable setting for higher speed drives, but is an incompatible setting.
Two workarounds available: **Set the drive to use Soft Loop ID. **Set the blades port for this target channel to Hard ID 0 to match that of the drive. Do this from the GUI. However, it will be necessary to telnet to the blade and enter the 'fcRestart' for this channel for the ID change to take effect.

This problem primarily happens with Internet Explorer. The best possible solution in the interim would be to use FireFox (3.5.x) or greater or to start a separate IE browser window for library management.
The current release of i8 has added an issuance of a RAS ticket upon import of a piece of media that has a duplicate barcode which will help prevent this situation. It should be noted that bulk loading media is still exposed to this abnormality.

This is designed function this way to track drive / media issues.
Take the physical library offline before changing the drive SCSI ID or LTO-2 settings.
Pause at least one minute between issuing Vary On or Vary Off commands. Observe the behavior of the drive to ensure the command is executed.
Do not terminate a string of SCSI drives at the MCB.
No applicable workaround is available.
Applications have varying time-outs for Move Medium, with the minimum, non-configurable timeout being 300 seconds. Thus each logical library (LL) has an absolute time budget of 300/#LLs to "spend" on a move. If an LL knows in advance that it will be unable to perform a move, the LL can return Busy to the application. If one LL consumes the entire 300 seconds doing recovery, all the other LLs will timeout.
