BEFORE USE

Thank you for buying this Pioneer® product.

Check your AV Receiver specifications for supported Dolby Atmos speaker configurations.

To assure maximum performance from your new speakers, please read through this operating guide before you install or use them. After you have finished reading this operating guide, store it in a safe place for future reference.

The nominal impedance of this speaker system is 6 ohms. Connect the speaker system to a stereo amplifier with a load impedance rating ranging from 4 to 6 ohms (a model

with “4-16Ω” displayed on the speaker output terminals).

In order to prevent damage to the speaker resulting from input overload, please observe the following precautions:

Do not supply power to the speaker in excess of the maximum rated power.

When connecting or disconnecting cables, be sure amplifier power is OFF.

Do not use excessive amplifier volume if using a graphic equalizer to emphasize high or low frequencies.

BASIC NOTES ON THE SP-T22A-LR

The SP-T22A-LR is an add-on speaker that converts a conventional home theater speaker system into a Dolby Atmos® sound system. The SP-T22A-LR is designed to bounce sound off your ceiling to immerse you in the dramatic surround-sound effects of your Dolby Atmos-enabled content. In order to use the SP-T22A-LR, you will need an A/V receiver or surround-sound processor equipped with Dolby Atmos processing.

We designed the SP-T22A-LR to sit atop the Pioneer SP-BS22-LR bookshelf speaker and SP-FS52 tower speaker, but it can also be used with any tower or bookshelf speaker that has a flat top. Simply place the SP-T22A-LR atop your existing speakers, with the SP-T22A-LR positioned so its driver is angled in the same direction the speakers are facing.

You can start by using one SP-T22A-LR atop each of your front main (left and right) speakers. To achieve a more dramatic effect from Dolby Atmos, add another SP-T22A-LR atop each of your rear surround speakers.

CONNECTING YOUR SYSTEM

IMPORTANT: Make sure all equipment is turned off before making any connections. Correct wiring of your loudspeakers is essential for achieving the best sound quality. Be careful to ensure proper polarity (+/-) of connection. We recommend a minimum of 18 gauge for runs up to 25 feet, and thicker for longer runs.

Most loudspeaker cable is coded to ease this task. Typically the ribbed or striped side, or the side with the connector marked in red or white, is connected to the positive (red) terminal. Make sure that the amplifier positive (red) terminal is connected to the loudspeaker positive (red) terminal, and that the amplifier negative (black) terminal is connected to the loudspeaker negative (black) terminal.

If the wires you’re using are not already terminated with banana plugs, spade lugs, etc., strip off ½” of insulation from the ends of the cable, twist the bare strands and insert into the binding posts. Take care that no stray strands of wire short across between the terminals.

Connect the other speakers in your surround-sound system as you normally would. Then connect the height-channel outputs of your Dolby Atmos-enabled A/V receiver (or surround processor and amplifier) to the SP-T22A-LR. Make sure that you connect the left and right channel signals from the receiver to the left and right SP-T22A-LRs, respectively. Repeat the process if you are using SP-T22A-LRs for the rear channels as well.

REMOVING THE GRILL

The grill covering the SP-T22A-LR driver are not user removeable. They should only be removed by a qualified service technician.

PLACEMENT AND FINE TUNING

Correct placement of your speakers is the most important thing you can do to get the best possible sound quality from them. Take time to experiment with positioning according to the guidelines below.

This diagram shows SP-T22A-LR speakers placed atop bookshelf speakers used for the front and rear channels, in conjunction with a center speaker and a subwoofer. The SP-T22A-LR will work just as well with tower speakers, too. You can use the SP-T22A-LR only atop the front left/right speakers if you wish, but for a more dramatic Dolby Atmos effect, you can add a second pair of SP-T22A-LRs atop the rear surround speakers. If you already have Dolby Atmos-enabled speakers (such as the Pioneer SP-BS22A-LR) in the front channels, you can use the SP-T22A-LR on the rear speakers. Angling the loudspeakers inward towards the listener seated in the center will improve the image stability for non-central listeners.

This diagram shows the SP-T22A-LR add-on speakers in a 5.1.4 Dolby Atmos Home Theater system. Visit our website to learn more about other Dolby Atmos speaker configurations for your home theater.

SETTING UP FOR DOLBY ATMOS

The top-mounted, concentric driver used in the SP-T22A-LR was designed specifically for use in Dolby Atmos enabled sound systems. It’s angled precisely to bounce sound off your ceiling to create more dramatic surround-sound effects.

Guidelines for Best Atmos Setup

In order to use the Dolby Atmos-enabled capability of these speakers the listening room ceiling should have a horizontal flat hard surface (for audio reflection) and a height of 8' to 14'. If your room does not meet these requirements standard ceiling or in-ceiling speakers are required.

The most important part of the Atmos speaker setup is making sure that the top-mounted height driver in each SP-T22A-LR is positioned at your seated ear height or higher, but lower than half the height of the room, as seen below. You can easily optimize the position of the SP-T22A-LR by choosing a speaker stand of the appropriate height. The main front and rear surround speakers should be positioned so the tweeters are approximately at the height of your ears when you’re seated.

BASS MANAGEMENT SETTINGS

The SP-T22A-LR is designed to reproduce sounds above about 180 Hz. Dolby Atmos receivers and surround-sound processors include the proper high-pass filtering that will ensure bass frequencies do not enter the SP-T22A-LR, no matter what bass management settings you use for the main, center and surround speakers.

Do not use these speakers with any amplifier that is not filtered below 180 Hz. Doing so could damage your speakers and void the warranty.

INSTALLATION PRECAUTIONS

Do not install this speaker system near a stove or other heating appliances, or put it in a place exposed to the sun. Such locations may cause the cabinet to change color and the speaker system to break down.

The SP-T22A-LR is designed to sit securely atop the SP-BS22-LR bookshelf speaker or SP-FS52 tower speaker. With other speakers, make sure that the SP-T22A-LR rests stably atop the speaker. Use the SP-T22A-LR only with speakers that have a flat top. If it is placed on a speaker with a curved top, the SP-T22A-LR may fall off. Use the provided rubber feet to secure the module atop the flat speaker surface.

Pioneer will not be responsible for any accidents or damage that may result from improper installation.

CABINET MAINTENANCE

Use a polishing cloth or dry cloth to wipe off dust and dirt.

When the cabinet is very dirty, clean with a soft cloth dipped in some neutral cleanser diluted with six parts water to one part cleanser, and then wipe again with a dry cloth. Do not use furniture wax or cleaners.

Never use paint thinner, benzine, insecticide sprays and other chemicals on or near the cabinets, since these will corrode the surfaces.
