Inspection, points to verify:

Before each use, check the frame of the descender,
and the carabiner guide. If there is any doubt about
the condition of the device, return it to PETZL for
inspection.

Instructions for Use

Diagram 1: Installation

-Choose a locking HMS carabiner with a diameter
of about 12mm (for example a WILLIAM or an
ATTACHE)

-Installation of the carabiner on the descender: for
a left-handed person (fi gure a), or for a right­handed person (fi g b).
Be careful: The explanations in this notice are given
for a right-handed person.

-Installation of the descender on the harness: place
the carabiner locking mechanism towards you.

-Installation of the rope: the free end of the rope
should run out on the right hand side.
It is possible to install a sling between the
descender and the harness attachment point (for
example an ANNEAU C40-24 attached by a lark’s
head knot).

Depending upon the rope’s diameter, it may not be
possible to use all of the device’s functions. It may
occasionally be useful to provide backup protection
for the descent with a Shunt (B03) or a prussik.

Diagram 6: Lowering a person

Attach the PIRANA to the anchor (with the
carabiner’s locking mechanism towards you). Use
the fi rst cleat for effective braking.

Diagram 7: Belaying the leader

The PIRANA can be used as a belay device;
however, care must be taken to ensure the
belayer’s safety. It is imperative for the belayer
to have backup protection to prevent any risk of
a fall. With the PIRANA correctly threaded and
attached to your harness, hold the free end of the
rope with one hand, and the leader’s end with the
other. To lock, pull the free end of the rope fi rmly
downwards.

A. Braking positions: the PIRANA descender
is equipped with 3 different braking positions:
minimum, intermediate, maximum.
Choose a suitable braking position before
utilization based upon your weight, the type and
diameter of the rope, and the steepness of the
terrain.
B. Additional braking positions:
The fi rst and second cleats allow the braking to be
adjusted during descent.
C. Precautions:

-Be careful, the PIRANA alone does not ensure
adequate braking. Your hand must always grip
the free end of the rope. A partner on the ground
can provide additional security by belaying your
descent.

-The PIRANA is designed to be used in the
positions illustrated in Diagram 2. Using the device
in any other manner damages the carabiner guide
and creates the risk of a lark’s head knot forming
and jamming the device.

-Used correctly, the PIRANA prevents the
formation of a lark’s head knot, but it does not
prevent a knot from forming which could halt the
descent.

Diagram 3: Locking

A. The rapid locking position requires you to
keep your hand on the free end of the rope. This
position is useful at the start of the rappel, or for
freeing tangled rope during the descent.
B. The security locking position without support
from the wall.
C. The security locking position with support from
the wall.

A. Locked rappel: Be careful, descending on the
wrong end of the rope may result in death.
B. Rappel with quick-release: Pass the end to be
descended through the rappel ring. Lower enough
rope for the end to hang just above the water. Clip
an HMS carabiner into the upper anchor. Make a
munter hitch in this carabiner and lock it with a
mule knot.
This technique allows the lowering of a partner
who is stuck under a waterfall.

Contrôle, points à vérifi er

Vérifi er avant toute utilisation le corps du
descendeur, le caoutchouc de maintien du
mousqueton.
En cas de doute, retourner l’appareil à PETZL pour
contrôle.

Prescriptions d’utilisation

Schéma 1. Mise en place

- Choisir un mousqueton à verrouillage de type
HMS de diamètre 12 mm environ (par exemple un
WILLIAM ou un ATTACHE)

- Installation du mousqueton sur le descendeur:
pour gaucher (fi g a), pour droitier (fi g b).
Attention, les explications de la notice sont
présentées pour un droitier.

- Installation du descendeur sur le harnais: placer
la bague du mousqueton vers soi.

- Installation de la corde: le brin libre sort du côté
de la main droite.
Il est possible d’installer un fusible entre le
descendeur et le point d’attache du harnais
(par exemple ANNEAU C40-24 fi xé par une tête
d’alouette).

Selon le diamètre de la corde, la totalité des
fonctions n’est pas utilisable. Il est parfois utile
de contre-assurer la descente à l’aide d’un Shunt
(B03) ou d’un prussik.

Fixer le PIRANA sur l’ancrage (bague de
verrouillage du mousqueton vers soi). Utiliser le
premier renvoi pour un freinage effi cace.

Schéma 7. Assurage

Le PIRANA peut être utilisé comme appareil
d’assurage. Attention à la sécurité de l’assureur:
il doit absolument être contre-assuré pour éviter
tout risque de chute. Le PIRANA est en place sur
le harnais de l’assureur, d’une main l’assureur tient
le brin libre et de l’autre la corde du premier. Pour
bloquer, tenir le brin libre fermement vers le bas.

Schéma 2. Descente

A. Choisir la position: le descendeur PIRANA
dispose de 3 positions différentes de freinage :
minimum, intermédiaire , maximum.
Choisir le freinage adapté avant le départ en
fonction de son poids, du type et du diamètre de la
corde et de la confi guration du terrain.
B. Freinages complémentaires:
pendant la descente le premier renvoi et le
deuxième renvoi permettent d’adapter le freinage.
C. Précautions

- Attention, utilisé seul, le PIRANA n’assure pas la
fonction de blocage. La main doit toujours tenir le
brin libre. Une personne au sol peut sécuriser la
descente.

- Le PIRANA est conçu pour être utilisé suivant les
positions décrites schéma 2. Tout autre utilisation
abime le caoutchouc de maintien et présente le
risque de blocage par tête d’alouette.

- Le PIRANA évite la formation de tête d’alouette
mais il n’empêche pas un noeud de venir bloquer
la descente.

Schéma 3. Arrêts

A. La position de blocage rapide nécessite de
garder la main sur le brin libre. Cette position est
intéressante au départ du rappel ou pendant la
descente pour dégager la corde.
B. La position de blocage de sécurité sans appui
sur le sol.
C. La position de blocage de sécurité avec appui
sur le sol.

A. Le rappel bloqué : attention, descendre sur le
bon brin... danger de mort.
B. Le rappel débrayable: introduire le brin de
descente dans l’anneau de rappel. Placer le brin à
la longueur désirée (au dessus de l’eau). Installer
un mousqueton HMS sur l’ancrage supérieur.
Réaliser un demi-cabestan. et le bloquer par un
noeud de mule.
Cette technique permet de descendre un coéquipier
bloqué sous cascade.

Gebrauchsanweisung

Darstellung 1. Einlegen des Seils

- Wahl eines Verschlusskarabiners vom Typ HMS
mit einem Durchmesser von ca. 12 mm (zum
Beispiel einen WILLIAM oder einen ATTACHE)

- Befestigen des Karabiners am Abseilgerät:
Für Linkshänder (Abbildg a), für Rechtshänder
(Abbildg b).
Achtung: Die Erklärungen in der Anweisung gelten
für Rechtshänder.

- Befestigen des Abseilgeräts am Gurt: Hülse des
Karabiners Richtung Benutzer.

- Einsatz des Seils: Das freie Seilende läuft über die
rechte Hand.
Es ist möglich, zwischen dem Abseilgerät und
der Befestigungsöse des Gurts eine Sicherung
einzusetzen (zum Beispiel ANNEAU C40-24,
befestigt mit einem Ankerstich).

Diese Technik ermöglicht das Abseilen eines
Teammitglieds, das unter einem Wasserfall
festsitzt.

Die Einsatzmöglichkeiten richten sich nach dem
Durchmesser des Seils. Es ist manchmal für das
Abseilen hilfreich, eine Gegensicherung mit Hilfe
eines Shunt (B03) oder eines Prusik einzurichten.

Der PIRANA kann als Sicherungsgerät eingesetzt
werden. Zur Sicherheit des Sichernden beachten:
Er muss zur Vermeidung jeglicher Sturzgefahr
unbedingt gegengesichert sein. Der PIRANA
befi ndet sich am Gurt des Sichernden. Der
Sichernde hält mit der einen Hand das freie
Seilende und mit der anderen
das Seil zum Seilersten. Zum Blockieren freies
Seilende mit festem Griff nach unten halten.

A. Position wählen: Das Abseilgerät PIRANA
verfügt über 3 verschiedene Positionen zum
Bremsen: minimal, mittel, maximal.
Vor Beginn in Abhängigkeit von Gewicht, Seiltyp
und -durchmesser sowie Beschaffenheit des
Geländes entsprechende Bremsvorrichtung
wählen.
B. Zusätzliches Bremsen:
Während des Abseilens ermöglichen die erste
Umlenkung und die zweite Umlenkung eine
Bremsregelung.
C. Vorsichtsmaßnahmen

- Achtung: Allein eingesetzt, stellt der PIRANA
nicht die Blockierfunktion sicher. Die Hand muss
daher stets mit festem Griff das freie Seilende
halten. Eine Person am Boden kann das Abseilen
absichern

- Der PIRANA ist für die Verwendung gemäß
den in Darstellung 2 beschriebenen Positionen
ausgelegt. Jede andere Verwendung beschädigt
die Gummiführung und birgt die Gefahr des
Blockierens durch Ankerstich.

- Der PIRANA vermeidet die Bildung von
Ankerstichen, verhindert jedoch nicht das
Blockieren des Abseilens durch einen Knoten.

Darstellung 3. Anhalten

A. Die Position des schnellen Blockierens erfordert
das Belassen der Hand am freien Seilende. Diese
Position ist zu Beginn der Abseilfahrt oder während
des Abseilens zum Freimachen des Seils nützlich.
B. Position des Sicherheitsblockierens ohne
Unterstützung am Boden.
C. Position der Sicherheitsblockierens mit
Unterstützung am Boden.

A. Blockierte Abseilfahrt: Achtung: Am richtigen
Seilende abseilen...Lebensgefahr.
B. Auskuppelbare Abseilfahrt: Abseilende in die
Schlinge zur Abseilfahrt einführen. Seilenende bei
gewünschter Länge einsetzen (über dem Wasser).
Karabiner vom Typ HMS an oberem Anschlagpunkt
einsetzen. Halbmastwurf anlegen und diesen mit
einem Schleifknoten sichern.
