ETWORK SETUP
The Medi@ TV set-top box, in its factory-default state, is not assigned a network address. You should select which network interface to use (DHCP or fixed IP).
If you make a mistake during network setup, power-off the set-top box and power it back on again. It will restart the network setup.
3.6.1 SELECTING A LANGUAGE
By default, your Packard Bell Medi@ TV’s on-screen controls are diplayed in the English language. The controls are also available in French, Dutch, German, Spanish and Italian.
Turn on the set-top box, and you will see the following screen. Select your preferred language.
3.6.2 ASSIGNING AN IP ADDRESS
1. After you have selected the language, the set-top box will ask how to assign an IP address: Automatic or manual.
If you are connecting the PC and Medi@ TV using a hub, select Automatic (DHCP). This will allow the set-top box to get its IP address automatically from a DHCP server built into the hub.
If you are connecting the PC and Medi@ TV using a crossed LAN cable, we also recommed you to select Automatic (DHCP). If you do not want to use that function, select ‘Input Static IP Address. You should then enter the IP address and subnet mask of the set-top box manually using the remote control.
2. If you select ‘Automatic (DHCP)’, the network setup is completed, and you will see the confirmation dialogue. Pressing the <OK> button will reboot the set-top box.
9
PART 1 – INSTALLATION OF PACKARD BELL MEDI@ TV
Page 10
If you selected ‘Automatic (DHCP)in the set-top box’s network setup, you should also select ‘Obtain an IP address automaticallyin the TCP/IP setting of the network card in your PC.
3. Selecting ‘Input Static IP Address’ will cause the set-top box to ask you for an IP address. We recommend using an IP address of the form ‘192.168.x.x’. Use the numeric keys on the remote control to input the IP address, using the [*] key to input dots(.) between numbers. If you make a mistake or want to delete the previous value, use the [#] key to delete the last character. After completing the IP address, move to the [OK] position on the screen and press the <OK> button on the remote control.
If you set the IP address of the set-top box manually, you also should set the IP address of your network card from the TCP/IP setting of your PC. The IP address of the set-top box and server PC should have the same first three numbers but a different last number. For example, if you entered ‘192.168.11.3as the set-top box’s IP address, you should set the IP address of the PC to ‘192.168.11.x, where x is a number between 1 to 255 other than 3.
4. After assigning the IP address, you must enter the subnet mask, using the same method as that used to enter the IP address (described above).
The subnet mask for the set-top box and the server PC should be identical. We recommend that you to use the default value, ‘255.255.255.0for both the set-top box and the PC.
5. After entering the subnet mask, the Network Setup is completed, and you will see the confirmation dialogue. The dialogue informs you of the recommended IP address and subnet mask setting of your PC’s network card. Pressing the <OK> button will reboot the set-top box.

3.1.3 CREATING AN AUDIO ALBUM FROM CD
Encoding Format
In Media Organizer, you can encode music from CD to WMA or MP3 format. The format can be selected from [Option] on the [Tool] menu. The default format is set to ‘Encode to WMA format.’ If you want MP3 format, select ‘Encode to MP3 format’ and then click [Change] to select the folder of MP3 encoder. You must download an MP3 encoder from the Internet. Currently, only BladEnc (BladeEnc.dll) is supported.
Caution: You can not encode to MP3 with software that is incompatible with Medi@ TV. You must first download BladeEnc.dll from ‘www.bladeenc.mp3.no’ to a folder and appoint the location of the file. If BladeEnc.dll does not exist in the appointed folder, you can not encode to MP3. Deleting BladeEnc.dll can cause errors during the process of copying music from CD.
Importing music from CD
Depending on the encoding format, you can import music from CDs with the following procedure.
1. Insert an audio CD into the CD-ROM drive.
2. Select File-Import-From Audio CD.
3. It will download CD information from the Internet and will show the title, artist, year, label, and genre of the CD. Check the information and then click Next.
4. If you select ‘All Tracks,’ all tracks on the CD will be copied.
If you select ‘Select Tracks,’ the playlist of the CD will show so you can use checkboxes to select the music you want to copy.

To change Medi@ TV Server’s settings, you use the Medi@ TV icon on the system tray. Select Configuration on the menu that shows when you click or double-click the icon. If you do this, you will see the Medi@ TV Server Configuration window.
1.1 SETTING UP VIDEO OPTION
Double-click the Medi@ TV icon in the system tray to open [Medi@ TV Server Setting Setup]. There are four tabs: [Video Folder], [Video Transfer], [Video Buffer], and [Other]. You will see [Video Folder] first.
Advanced setup of Video can affect the video settings of the set-top box seriously, so if it is not necessary, it is best to use the default settings.
1.1.1 VIDEO FOLDER
On the [Video Folder] tab, you can select folders for PVR and ETC video files.
Selecting a Folder for PVR videos
Select the folder that you want to use as the PVR folder. The video files in this folder can be viewed in Medi@ TV Viewer by selecting ‘PVR’ view. If you have a TV tuner card and recording software in your PC, you may specify this folder as the location where the TV recording software stores recorded TV programs. In this way, you can enjoy your recorded TV programs in Medi@ TV Viewer.
For more information about PVR view, refer to ‘3.4.1 Viewing Video List.’

PART 4 – ADVANCED SETUP AND FAQ
Page 52
1.1.2 SETTING UP VIDEO TRANSFER METHOD
In [Video Transfer] setup, you can set up direct transmission of MPEG2 or modify the video resolution.
How to Transmit MPEG2 Files
You can set up the transmission method of MPEG2 files. If you select ‘Direct Transmit’, all MPEG2 files will be transmitted to the set-top box without trans-coding.
If you do not select this option, MPEG2 files on the PC will be first decoded and encoded into the appropriate bit rate (called trans-coding). MPEG2 files will be changed to a bit rate less than 4 Mbps.
In Direct Transmission mode, MPEG2 files with high bit rates may cause frame drops.
Modifying Resolution
You can enable or disable the ‘Expand Video Screen’ option to fit the video to the TV screen. For example, a video file with 320*240 resolution will be enlarged to fit the TV screen. However, some high-end TV sets have the capability to scale input video if it does not fit to the screen. In these TVs, you may want to turn off this option and let the TV do the scaling, as it often results in better video quality for videos that are wider than a 16:9 ratio.
Setting up Video Buffer
In [Video Buffer], you can set up options related to video buffering, including Initial Buffering, Buffer size, Target Buffering Size, and Seek Delay.
Initial Buffering (0 ~ 5MB):
This is the size of video data buffered in the set-top box when you first play a video. Setting this size to a large value can reduce frame drops during video playback, but buffering data takes some time, and you have to wait for about three seconds per 1 MB.
Buffer Size (2 ~ 5MB):
This is the maximum size of video data buffered in the set-top box during playback. Setting this size to a large value can reduce frame drops when the network is unstable. However, if the performance of the server PC is not good, playback may be worse.
Target Buffer Size (1MB ~ Buffer size):
When the size of data buffered in the set-top box during playback is smaller than this value, it asks the server for more data. This value is related to ‘Buffer Size’, so it may affect playback.
Seek Delay (2 ~ 30sec):
This is the waiting time when you jump backward/forward during playback. If the value is large, you may see fewer frame drops after the jump, but it takes more time to start playback after jumps.
After setting up Initial Buffering and Seek Delay, press the [OK] button. These values are automatically set with the best values after detecting the system, so it is not recommended to change them unless it is necessary. If you change them and are unsatisifed with the results, you can press the [Default] button to reapply the original settings.
Option Disabled.
Option Enabled.

2.1.2 HOW CAN I CHANGE THE LANGUAGE OF THE PACKARD
BELL VIEWER? HOW CAN I RESET MEDI@ TV?
If the language selection is not available in the option/general screen, you will need to reset your Medi@ TV:
- Go in the Home screen ([ ] button),
- Keep the [ ] button of remote control pressed until the two LED on the front panel blink
simultaneously,
- Release the [ ] button and keep the [#] button pressed until both LED blink alternatively,
- Release the [#] button. Medi@ TV will then restart automatically and will let you select your

2.1.3 CAN I USE THE INTERNET ON MY PC
WHILE USING MEDI@ TV?
If you only have one LAN card on your PC and Medi@ TV is directly connected to it, you can not use the Internet, even when you are not using Medi@ TV. This is because the LAN card is used only for Medi@ TV. You need two LAN cards in order to connect to an external network. Use one for Medi@ TV and one for the external network connection.
2.1.4 SETTING UP WHEN USING A FIREWALL
Generally, firewalls protect your computer’s network connections. If you are using a firewall, Medi@ TV may not perform well. In this case, please disable your firewall or uninstall it.
2.2 ORGANIZER
2.2.1 I WANT TO MOVE THE LOCATION
OF MEDIA OF MEDIA ORGANIZER.
Media in the Media Organizer is saved and managed in a DB (database), so if you move the location, it will not be able to find the media.
For more information about media recovery, refer to ‘part 2, 6.2 Recovering Media Link.’
2.2.2 WHEN I ADD MEDIA WITH MEDIA ORGANIZER, AN ERROR
MESSAGE SHOWS UP WITHOUT ADDING THE MEDIA.
If Media Organizer was not shut down properly because of a power failure, or if the PC crashed, the database that saves media information could get damaged and cause the program to malfunction. It might show an error message and not work when you add or edit media in Media Organizer. It might not show media you added when you want to enjoy media on Viewer. In order to prevent these problems, it is recommended that you back up the database periodically. Select Tool-Back up All Media DB or Tool-Back up selected media DB in Media Organizer to back up the database. For more information about Media Database Backup, refer to ‘part 2, 6.4 Backup/Recover Media DB.’ When the media database is damaged, follow these directions to recover from the backup.
1. Delete all media you added in Media Organizer, or delete the database folder (e.g., C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Medi@ TV\database).
2. Select Tool-Backup Media DB in Media Organizer.
3. If a dialogue box displays, select the database you backed up before.
4. Select Recover previous DB on the ‘Media Recover Method’ screen.
5. After completing the recovery, in the case of media with lost links, use the ‘Recover Media Link’ function to recover the lost links.

2.3.2 MEDIA SKIPS DURING PLAYBACK.
If you use the Internet or other programs on your PC while running Medi@ TV, skipping may occur because of system overload. If you run other programs on your server PC while using Medi@ TV, please note that your system may slow down or errors may occur.
While playing video, CPU usage varies according to picture quality, so adjust it to fit your PC. You can set up the quality using the video options from the set-top box.
You can also set the size of buffering using advanced server setup. For more information about this process, refer to ‘1.1 Setting up video option.’

2.3.3 CPU REQUIREMENTS FOR VIDEO PLAYBACK
The following table shows the minimum CPU requirements by video format and size.
* When DivX resolution is 640 x 480 or 720 x 480, a faster system is required.
2.3.4 THE SCREEN SHOWS UPSIDE DOWN.
This problem is normally caused by codec problems. In this case, simply press the [Rotate] button on the remote controller to flip the screen. You can fix the problem with this function, but we recommend installing the latest codec.
2.3.5 THERE IS NO SOUND.
This is generally caused by a missing audio codec, and it should be addressed by installing the right codec.
2.3.6 I SEE THIN LINES ON THE INTERFACE
OF THE SCREEN WHILE WATCHING VIDEO.
This is possibly caused by noise that occurs when a PC enlarges a screen to wide TV. Click the Medi@ TV icon on the system tray and select [Configuration]. If you see the [Medi@ TV Server Configuration] dialogue box, select [Video Transfer]. Check whether ‘Expand Video’ is selected, and if it is, click it to disable it. After disabling it, click on OK to exit the setup. The video will play in its original size.
2.3.7 THE HOME SCREEN APPEARS,
EVEN THOUGH I DIDNT PRESS ANYTHING.
This happens when a network cable is disconnected, when the hub, router, or Access Point is turned off, or the wireless network connection fails.
Check the connections or network settings.
2.3.8 I WANT TO KNOW MORE ABOUT ETC VIDEO.
The basic concept of Medi@ TV is allowing you to watch media on TV through Media Organizer, but you don’t have to keep (in the Media Organizer) a movie you are going to delete after seeing it once. Set an ETC Folder on your hard disk, and if you save your video there, you can watch video in this folder without adding it to Media Organizer.
For more information on setting up an ETC Folder, refer to ‘1.1 Setting up a Video Option’.
2.3.9 I FORGOT MY PASSWORD FOR THE SET-TOP BOX.
For security pruposes, there is no way to retrieve your password. You have to initialize the password and set a new one. The initial password is 0000. If you select Load factory default on the exit menu from the Viewer option, the password will change to 0000. Select Password in Option-General to set up the password.
