INTRODUCTION
Congratulations on the purchase of your Oregon Scientific Salinity Sensor (ST228)
The ST228 Salinity Sensor is designed to easily help you take control of your salt intake by quickly determining the salinity concentration of liquids—at home or when dining out. Simply insert the sensors on the tip of the Salinity Sensor into your soup, sauce, or beverage and know in seconds the salt concentration it contains.
FEATURES [FIG. A]
A. ON BUTTON
Turns on or off the Salinity Sensor
B. TEMPERATURE READING
Indicates the temperature of the soup or beverage the meter is measuring
C. SALINITY READING
Indicates the salt concentration of the soup or beverage the meter is measuring
D. LOW-BATTERY INDICATOR
Lights up when the batteries are running low
E. SENSORS
Measure the salinity and temperature of a liquid
F. HANGER
Hooks onto any standard peg or line
G. BATTERY COMPARTMENT
Accommodates four LR43 batteries
H. SENSOR COVER
Protects the sensors when not in use
HOW TO USE YOUR SALINITY SENSOR
1. Remove the sensor cover.
2. Press the ON button. All components of the display panel will light
up for one second. Then the LCD will return to off, except the temperature indicator (°C/ °F), which will be flashing. The unit is now in “Standby” mode.
3. Insert the tip of the Salinity Sensor into the liquid you want to measure until the sensors are immersed.
4. Press and hold the ON button. The Salinity Sensor will start measuring the salinity and temperature of the liquid, during which time the salinity indicators on the LCD screen will light up one by one, and the temperature display will blink. Allow at least five seconds for the most accurate reading. The final readings will appear and stay.
Note: Temperature measurement range is between 23°F to 212°F. If the measured temperature is out of this range the temperature display will continue to flash. The Salinity Sensor is permanently set for °F or °C at the factory.
5. Release the ON button and remove the sensor from the liquid. The display screen will continue to show the salinity and temperature reading from the liquid just measured.
6. Press the ON Button once again to turn the Salinity Sensor off. The sensor will also turn itself off automatically if left idle for thirty seconds.
HINTS
For more accurate measurement,
- Stir the soup or beverage beforehand so the salt concentration is the
same throughout the liquid.
- Wipe the sensors clear before and after usage to eliminate any foreign matter.
- Allow five or more seconds for the measuring time to get accurate and stable reading.
- The unit can measure and show 7 levels of salt concentration with 7 bars on LCD. See follow table for concentration level :
LCD bar
Concentration Level Salt Content
(per 100cc)
0.3% 0.6% 0.8% 1.0% 1.3% 1.7% Over 2.0%

- Do not use the probe to stir the soup
- Do not use thinner or gasoline to clean the unit.
- Do not place the unit under direct sun light or in high humidity
environment.
- Do not leave the probe in water / soup for long time.
- Do not immerse the prode in rhe water / soup over 212°F (100°C)
more than 1 minute.
- Meter / Soup containing potassium and magnesium will make the
measured reading higher than actual
- Meter / Soup containing starch or in jelly form will make the
measured reading lower than actual
- Oil in soup will attach on the surface of the probe head that will
affect the measurement result so remove oil layer on soup before measure
- Meter / Soup must be stirred well before measurement
- The meter must be immersed into soup for at least 5 seconds to take
the measurement
- During measurement, probe head must be apart from the surface
of container for at least 1 cm
- Only the probe head can be immersed into water. The main body is
not waterproof design so cannot be clean under water.
- Use neutral detergent to clean the probe
- Clean probe head carefully after and before each measurement.
Any deposit on probe head surface will affect the measuring result.
- The unit is designed for testing on food only.
- Keep the unit away from children.
