Remote Control Panel and Status Monitor
Paper/Envelope Loading
Remove printer and all accessories from packing
carton. Save carton and packing materials in case
you need to repack printer.
Make sure you have following items:
1 Printer
2 Power Cord
3 Starter Image Cartridge
4 CD-ROM
5 Quick Reference Card
You need a centronics-compatible parallel printer cable. The printer cable may not ship with your printer, in which case
you can purchase one from your dealer or retailer. Make sure cable is IEEE 1284-compliant.

Remove shipping tape and
open front cover.

Carefully remove
sealing tape from
cartridge by pulling
sealing tape tab (which
is much longer than
cartridge).

Push cartridge into place by pressing
down on handle. Guide pins should slide
along guide rails.

Unpack image cartridge and shake from side-toside to distribute toner.
Do not expose cartridge to sunlight or move plastic
shutter on bottom of cartridge to expose lightsensitive drum.

Locate cartridge guide rails inside
printer (one on each side) and guide
pins on each side of cartridge. Align
as shown.

Gently close front cover.

Windows 95/98 Driver

Start Windows. If Windows detects new hardware,
click Cancel.

Insert the PG L8L CD-ROM into your computer’s
CD drive.

From Start menu, select Run.

In the Run dialog box, type d:\setup.exe
(assuming
with OK.

Follow the on-screen instructions to complete
installation.
Windows 3.x Driver

Printer Driver Installation

Switch OFF printer and computer.

Plug power cord into back of printer and plug other
end into grounded power outlet.

Plug printer cable into connector on back of printer.
Push clips at each end of connector into notches
on printer cable until they snap.

Attach other end of cable to computer.

Power ON printer and computer.
Windows NT 4.0 Driver

Start Windows.

Insert the PG L8L CD-ROM into your computer’s
CD drive.

From the Windows NT Start menu, select
Settings, then Printers.

Double-click on the Add Printer icon.

Click on My Computer and Next.

Select the port you are using, typically LPT1:, then
click on Next.

The computer will list different printer
manufacturers and models. Click on Have Disk.

In the Install from Disk dialog box, in the input box
marked “Copy Manufacturer’s Files From:”, type
d:\english\win_nt\driver (assuming d: is your CD-
ROM drive) and confirm with OK.

Olivetti PG L8L will be listed. Click Next.

Follow the on-screen instructions to complete
installation.
Remote Control Panel (RCP) allows you to set printer defaults for documents printed from DOS applications running
inside the Windows MS-DOS Prompt. (DOS programs may override these settings with their own built-in drivers.)
Status Monitor (SM) runs in the background and automatically displays messages on your computer screen
whenever printer status changes. (Not available for Windows NT.)

DOS Remote Control Panel & Status Monitor

Insert the PG L8L CD-ROM into your computer’s CD
drive.

At the DOS prompt C:\>, enter the following
commands:
md dosrcp (creates a dosrcp directory)
cd dosrcp (changes to the dosrcp directory)
copy d:\english\dos_rcp\*.* (copies files)
dospgl8l.bat (installs RCP&SM)
To start RCP for DOS, at the DOS prompt type cd\dosrcp and
press Enter, then type dosrcp and press Enter.

1ERROR light (on) Indicates one of following:
• No image cartridge.
• Cover open.
• Paper jam (if PAPER light also on).
• Other error condition (requires servicing).
ERROR light (blink) Indicates printer memory insufficient for print job.
2PAPER light (on) Indicates one of following:
• Paper tray empty.
• Paper jam (if ERROR light also on).
PAPER light (blink) Indicates printer is in manual feed mode.
3READY light (on) Indicates printer on-line, ready to receive and process data.
READY light (blink) Indicates printer receiving or processing data.
READY light (off) Indicates printer off-line.
All lights (blink) Indicates possible printer failure. Turn off printer, wait one minute, turn
printer on again. If problem persists, requires servicing.

Functions
On-line/Off-line Press to toggle printer between on-line (READY light on) and off-line (READY
light off) status.
Manual Feed When PAPER light blinks (indicating manual feed mode), press to feed paper
from manual feeder (required for each page of manual feed job).

Reset Press to turn printer off-line. Press again and hold down until all lights blink,
then release.
Clears all data from printer’s memory (except permanent fonts and macros)
and restores user default settings.
Self-Test With printer on-line, press and hold down until all lights blink, then release. A
one-page printer status sheet will print.
Image Cartridge With printer on-line, press and hold down until all lights remain lit
Cleaning (not blinking) and printer begins to cycle up (starts feeding paper), then release.
One sheet will print.
Removes excess toner from image cartridge. Use this procedure if printed
pages show stray marks or smudges.

Grasp paper on both
sides and gently pull out
