Connecting to public WLAN access points
Your Nokia 9300i is equipped with a built-in wireless LAN
(WLAN) card. Through a WLAN connection, you may be
able to access the Internet, your company intranet, and email server at your convenience, without a network cable.
WLAN uses radio frequency technology to transfer data.
WLAN access points connect wireless networks with other
wireless networks and systems connected with cables.
Various institutions, such as airports, hotels, restaurants,
and shopping centers, provide public WLAN access points
that are powered by network operators and Internet
service providers (ISP). Public WLAN access points are
available for all users who have a device with WLAN
capability and who have bought Internet time from the
network operator or ISP.
Internet time for public WLAN connections can be bought
in different ways. For example, the following options may
be available:
• Buying Internet time directly from network providers or
ISPs — Various service providers offer users the option
of buying Internet time online. Payment may be made
with a credit card, and users are given a user name and
password that are valid for all WLAN access points of
the network operator or service provider.
• Using prepaid vouchers — Locations that offer public
WLAN access points often offer prepaid vouchers for
different periods of time. A voucher contains a user
name and password and can be valid, for example, for
24 hours, or it may expire 6 hours after the first log-on.
• Using your own service provider — If you are in a place
where the WLAN access point is provided by your own
service provider, you may be able to use your regular
user name and password. The charges for online time
are added directly to your invoice.
Some WLAN access points use wired equivalent privacy
(WEP) to prevent unauthorized use. To be able to use such
an access point, you must enter the WEP key into your
device. For details, refer to your Nokia 9300i user guide.
If you are unsure about how to buy Internet time or use a
specific public WLAN access point, ask the staff at the
location for help. They are also able to provide you with
the WEP keys, if necessary.
Note: Unless your WLAN connection is
protected, sending sensitive information
through a WLAN connection can involve risks.
Contact the network operator or ISP of the
WLAN connection for information on the
security of the connection.
