How to Extract USBSCAN.SYS from your
Windows 98/98SE/98oem Installer CD

Our support staff indicates that a number of users fail to install the USBSCAN.SYS which is a Windows Support File for USB products. This
file is contained in all versions of the Windows 98 installer CD.
At times the hardware install wizard does not indicate the correct location of this file and after a number of attempts to install this file has
failed, you may assume it is not required.
The USBSCAN.SYS file for the correct operation of NikonView3.is required
Here is a step by step method for obtaining the USBSCAN.SYS file from your Windows Installer CD. Please note that on some systems, your
vendor may provide a Windows Installer CD. If this is the case, you can sometimes find the Windows Installer located within your
Windows system directory in a folder called "Options".
If you do not have either a Windows 98/98SE installer CD or the Options folder, please contact your system supplier for assistance.

If you do not have a Windows Installer CD, check your system for an Options folder. When the source directory is requested, browse to the
Options folder to proceed.
In order to begin, please place your Windows installer CD in your CD ROM drive.
From the Menu Select Start Run....
In the Run Dialog type:
MSINFO32
This will present the Microsoft System Information application with the dialog shown below ( Figure 1)

From the Tools menu, please select the "System File Checker" tool. This tool is very useful if you are having system problems and you
suspect the installation of some older software may have caused a problem, but for now we are only interested in the ability to obtain the
USBSCAN.SYS file, so check the radio button that says "Extract one file from installation disk" In the text area enter the USBSCAN.SYS file
name exactly as shown below in figure 3.

Click the Start button to continue. You will be presented with the dialog below to specify the source ( Restore From) and the Target (Save File
in) directories. Click the Browse button in the restore line and then locate the WIN98 directory on your Windows Installer CD. If you don't have
a Windows Installer CD, check your system folder for the presence of the "Options" folder. If you have the options folder, browse to it, click on
the Options Folder so it is selected, then press the OK button to continue.
Click the Browse button in the Save file in: line and select your floppy drive ( this makes it simple to locate the file later on when the system
asks you for it. If you save to another location, jot down the path to the location before clicking OK.

After you have click OK in the destination directory dialog you should see confirmation dialog in Figure 5

Now that you have the file saved to a known location, attempt to install your Coolpix Camera
When the system requests the USBSCAN.SYS file, steer the hardware install wizard to the location you saved the USBSCAN.SYS file. The
system will now install the file correctly.
The USBSCAN.SYS file is a Microsoft Copyright file and cannot be distributed freely. It must be obtained from your Windows Installer CD
