the challenge
The Chen family was renovating the basement of their guest house off
their suburban Illinois home. They wanted to transform the space into
an entertainment area, complete with video games and a pool table. As
part of the new space, they also wanted to install a home theater
system. In addition, since the upstairs of the guest house doubles as
office space for their marketing communications firm 2GC, they
envisioned using the room and technology to deliver business
presentations to clients.
the solution
The Chens worked with audiovisual dealer Sights & Sounds to plan the
installation, deciding on a high-end system incorporating THX-certified
audio and a hi-definition satellite receiver with a built in off-air digital
tuner. For the actual image, it was decided that a home theater
projector was the best solution, since the chosen projector could
produce an image of sufficient size and quality to match the superior
acoustics – creating a true movie theater experience.
Chen heard raves from friends and business associates about NEC’s
ard-winning home theater projector, featuring an intense color

palette, sharp contrast, and fine details that produce superior film-like
images. NEC’s projector was the perfect technology to work in
tandem with the theater’s 106” diagonal screen.

the benefits
The NEC home theater projector’s image quality and price point enabled
the Chens to realize significant savings versus a competitive product. In
addition, the projector’s built-in processing is superior to the progressive
scan processing built into DVD players and competitive projectors. This
enables the installation of a $300-$400 DVD player instead of a highend $1,500 player – without any difference in image quality.
In addition, the NEC projector is so quiet and small that visitors often
don’t even notice that it is ceiling-mounted in the room. And its ability to
handle computer sources, a feature lacking in some other home theater
projectors, serves Chen’s business needs well.
“We love the projector’s dual purposes,” said Chen. “I can easily hook
up my laptop and project presentations for clients. In addition, we
watch hi-def television and DVDs in the theater, and the image that the
NEC projector displays is stunning. We entertain a lot more, from
movie night to sporting events, and even a quiet evening at home
watching TV.”
