Disposal of packing material
The transport and protective packing has been selected from materials which are environmentally friendly for disposal and can normally be recycled.
Ensure that any plastic, wrappings, bags etc. are disposed of safely and kept out of the reach of babies and young children. Danger of suffocation.
Rather than just throwing these materials away, please recycle them.
Disposing of the dustbag and filters
These are made from environmentally friendly materials, and can be disposed of with the normal household waste, as long as they have been used exclusively for general household dust. The dustbag should only be disposed of in this way if it has been used exclusively for general household dust.
Disposal of your old appliance or machine
Electrical and electronic appliances / machines often contain materials which, if handled or disposed of incorrectly, could be potentially hazardous to human health and to the environment. They are, however, essential for the correct functioning of your appliance or machine. Please do not therefore dispose of your old machine or appliance with your household waste.
Please dispose of it at your local community waste collection / recycling centre and ensure that it presents no danger to children while being stored for disposal.
It should be unplugged or disconnected from the mains electricity supply by a competent person. The plug must be rendered useless and the cable cut off directly behind it to prevent misuse. See the "Warning and Safety" section of this booklet for further details.

Warning and Safety instructions
Safety with children
This appliance meets statutory safety requirements. Inappropriate use can however lead to personal injury and damage to property. Read the operating instructions carefully before starting to use this appliance. This way you will prevent the risk of accidents and damage to the appliance. Keep these instructions in a safe place for future reference, and pass them on to any future user.
Supervise its use by older children or the elderly or infirm.
Before using for the first time
packaging, the vacuum cleaner and accessories for any signs of damage. Do not use a damaged appliance.
Do not let children play with the vacuum cleaner or its controls.
A damaged vacuum cleaner can be dangerous. Check the
Correct usage
This vacuum cleaner must only be
used in a domestic household situation to vacuum dry surfaces. Do not use on people or animals. Any other usage is at the owner’s risk and could be dangerous. The manufacturer cannot be held responsible for damage resulting from improper or incorrect use of the appliance.
Ensure that the connection data on
the data plate (voltage and frequency) match the mains electricity supply. It is essential that they match to avoid damage to the appliance.
The plug must be fitted with a 13 A
fuse (UK).
6
Warning and Safety instructions
Daily use
It important to switch the vacuum
cleaner off before changing over accessories and floor heads, especially a Turbo- or Electrobrush.
To avoid the risk of damage, do not
use the vacuum cleaner without the dustbag, dust compartment filter and exhaust filter in place.
Do not vacuum up liquids or damp
dirt. This will cause major faults and could seriously impair the functioning and electrical safety of the appliance. Wait until any freshly cleaned or shampooed carpets or floor coverings are completely dry before attempting to vacuum.
Do not vacuum up anything which
has been burning or is still glowing e.g. cigarettes, ashes or coal, whether glowing or apparently extinguished. The cleaner might catch fire.
Do not vacuum toner dust. Toner,
such as that used in printers and photocopiers can conduct electricity. The filter system in the vacuum cleaner may not filter it completely and so the toner could be blown back into the atmosphere by the fan.
Do not vacuum up any inflammable
or combustible liquids or gases and do not vacuum in areas where such substances are stored. The cleaner might explode.
Do not vacuum up items which are
heavy, hard or have sharp edges. They could cause a blockage and damage the appliance.
Floor attachments, accessories
and tubes must not be used at head level to avoid the risk of injury, e.g. to eyes and ears. Danger of injury.
Do not pull or carry the appliance
by the cable. When disconnecting from the mains socket pull by the plug and not by the cable.
- Keep the cable away from sharp edges and do not let it be squashed, for example, under a door.
- Avoid running the vacuum cleaner over the cable. A damaged cable, plug or socket is a safety hazard. The appliance must not be used if any of these have been damaged.
Monitor the change dustbag
indicator and change the dustbag if necessary. Check the exhaust and dust compartment filters at the same time and change them too if necessary. A full bag or blocked filter will hamper the suction power of the cleaner and can cause it to get so hot that the temperature limiter switches the cleaner off automatically, see "Problem solving guide".
7
Warning and Safety instructions
Using accessories
The socket on the vacuum cleaner
(depending on model) must only be used for the Miele Electrobrush specified for use with this appliance.
To avoid the risk of injury when
vacuuming with a Miele Electro- or Turbobrush do not touch the rotating rollerbrush. Danger of injury.
Miele vacuum cleaner bags are
disposable and intended to be used only once. Do not attempt to re-use. Blocked pores reduce the efficiency of the cleaner.
Use only genuine Miele dustbags,
filters and accessories. This will ensure optimum performance of the vacuum cleaner throughout its life.
Cleaning, maintenance and repairs
Always disconnect the vacuum
cleaner from the mains supply for maintenance work and for cleaning. Switch off at the wall socket and remove the plug. Pull on the plug and not the cable.
Never operate the appliance if it
shows any signs of damage, particularly to the cable. A damaged vacuum cleaner is dangerous. A damaged cable must only be replaced with a genuine original Miele cable.
Disposing of an old appliance
When disposing of an old
appliance cut the cable off the appliance as close to the cleaner as possible and cut the plug off. The plug cut from the cord should be rendered useless and then disposed of and on no account be inserted into any socket elsewhere in the house (electric shock hazard). See section "Disposal of your old appliance" earlier in this booklet for further advice.
The manufacturer cannot be held liable for damage caused by non-compliance with these Warning and Safety instructions.
Do not let the vacuum cleaner get
wet. Clean only with a dry cloth or slightly damp cloth when disconnected from the mains supply. If moisture gets into the appliance there is the risk of an electric shock.
Repairs may only be carried out by
a suitably qualified and competent person in accordance with national and local safety regulations. Repairs and other work by unqualified persons could be dangerous.

When the cleaner is not in use the cable can be wound around the two cable hooks.
Secure the cable by clamping the plug (depending on country) to the cable (see inset).
10
Using the accessories supplied
The following are supplied with the cleaner:
a Accessories clip
(depending on model)
b Crevice nozzle c Upholstery nozzle d Filter frame
The filter frame is supplied separately in the box only with those models, which are fitted with an "ACTIVE air clean" or "HEPA" exhaust filter as standard. The filter frame needs to be used if you wish to replace one of these filters with a "SUPER air clean" filter at a future date (see "Replacing one type of filter with another").
Accessories clip

^
Insert the plug into a suitable
switched socket (U.K.).
^
To prevent the cable from getting in
the way whilst you are vacuuming,
hang the unwound cable over the
cable hook in the handle (see inset).
This also takes the strain off the
cable-entry bush.
13
Use
Switching the vacuum cleaner on and off
To enable the vacuum cleaner to be conveniently operated in any vacuum-cleaning situation, two separate switches have been integrated into the unit’s handle. Either of the switches can be used to operate the vacuum cleaner.
Double slide switch 0 = Appliance is switched off min = Reduced suction max = Maximum suction
^ To turn the appliance on, slide either
switch to either the min or max. ^ To turn the appliance off, slide either
switch to the 0 position. Select min for vacuuming lightweight
items such as rugs or curtains.
14
Adjusting the suction power
(depending on model) On some models the suction power can
be regulated to suit the type of flooring. The higher the setting the more powerful the suction. Select the suction setting to suit the amount of dirt and the type of material to be vacuumed.
Slightly soiled and smooth floor coverings can be cleaned at an energy-saving medium setting, whereas thick-pile and fitted carpets require the highest setting to ensure deep-seated dirt is thoroughly removed. The highest setting should also be selected if a Turbobrush is used.
Adjusting the floor attachment to the type of floor covering
Use
The floorhead can be used for all normal cleaning of carpets and rugs. It can also be used with the brush protruding to vacuum hard flooring which is not susceptible to scratching. For hard flooring, such as stone and floors which are susceptible to scratching, e.g. parquet, we recommend using one of the special Miele floor brushes (see "Accessories available as optional extras").
Vacuum carpets and rugs with the brush retracted:
^
Press the foot switch to g. Clean hard flooring which is not
susceptible to scratching with the brush protruding:
^
Press the foot switch to h.
15
Setting down, transportation and storage
The end cap on the telescopic handpiece is made from slip-proof plastic. During short vacuuming breaks, the appliance can be leaned upright against a wall or furniture.
Before leaving the vacuum cleaner, make sure it is switched off and if you lean against the wall make sure it is at a safe angle so that it cannot fall over.
When using the floor brush or the parquet floor brush we recommend that you hang the vacuum cleaner up when storing it, to protect the bristles.
For longer term storage, the vacuum cleaner can also be hung on a wall hook by using the grommet integrated in the handle.
16
Always disconnect the vacuum
,
cleaner from the electrical supply for maintenance work and for cleaning. Switch off at the wall socket and remove the plug.
The Miele filter system consists of three filters which must be replaced from time to time to ensure efficient suction.
a Dustbag b Dust compartment filter (for motor
protection)
c Exhaust filter
Use only genuine Miele dustbags and filters. This ensures optimum performance of the vacuum cleaner.
Maintenance and care
c Exhaust filter
Depending on model, your vacuum cleaner will be fitted with one of the following exhaust filters:
a a SUPER air clean filter, b an ACTIVE air clean filter or c a HEPA filter
17
Maintenance and care
Dustbag change indicator
This indicates when the dustbag needs to be changed.
The attachment used can affect the function of the dustbag change indicator. Therefore only test with the floor attachment fitted.

^
little. If the red marker completely fills the
indicator window, the dustbag must be changed, even if it is not completely full.
Please note
This indicator measures the air permeability of the dustbag.
Even if just a few grammes of flour, fine cement of brick dust are sucked up, these fine particles can also affect the permeability of the dustbag, thus causing the red scale indictor to show that the bag is "full", athough it is virtually empty. The dustbag should, however, be changed in this case, as the suction power is greatly reduced. On the other hand the bag may be bulging with wool or carpet fluff, but the air permeability may still be high enough not to activate the red indicator to maximum. The dustbag should, however, still be changed.
Both these extremes can occur. Normally, however, common household dust is composed of carpet fluff, hair and grit, i.e. a mixture.
The Miele dustbag change indicator is designed principally to deal with this kind of use.
We recommend
1. If you vacuum up a lot of fine dust or sand:
^
Change the dustbag as soon as the red scale fills the window, even if the bag is not full.
2. If you have vacuumed up a lot of carpet fluff and hair and the dustbag is full although the indicator only shows half full (please check regularly):
^
Change the dustbag.
18
Maintenance and care
When should the dustbag and filter be changed?
Dustbag
When the red marker completely fills the indicator window (please note the information given in "Dustbag change indicator").
Miele vacuum cleaner bags are disposable and intended to be used only once. Clogged pores in a used bag will reduce the suction power of the cleaner.
Dust compartment filter (for motor protection)
Replace the dust compartment filter every time you start a new packet of dustbags.
A dust compartment filter is supplied with every packet of Miele dustbags.
HEPA Filter About once a year or as soon as air
permeability is reduced to an unsatisfactory level.
Make sure that you purchase a replacement in good time.
Purchasing new dustbags and filters
Replacement dustbags and filters can be obtained from your local Miele Dealer or direct from the Miele Spare Parts Department.
Order Miele dustbags with the letter K/K.
A "SUPER air clean" exhaust filter and a dust compartment filter are supplied with every packet of Miele dustbags.
Exhaust filter
(see "Exhaust filter" in previous section) SUPER air clean filter Replace the SUPER air clean filter
every time you start a new packet of dustbags.
A SUPER air clean filter is supplied with every packet of Miele dustbags.
ACTIVE air clean filter About once a year or as soon as the
filter no longer absorbs unpleasant odours.
Make sure that you purchase a replacement in good time.
19
Maintenance and care
Replacing the dustbag
Press the release catch for the dust
^
compartment lid and raise the lid until it clicks into place.
The dustbag has a collar which closes automatically when the dustbag is removed to prevent any dust escaping.
^ Holding the bag by the collar, lift it
away from the suction socket and then pull it out of its holder.
The dustbag can be disposed of with the normal household waste as long as it has only been used for vacuuming up normal household dust and not hazardous materials.
Do not unfold the bag when you take it out of the packet. Keeping it folded will prevent it from getting trapped when the dust compartment lid is closed.
^
Slide the collar of the new dustbag into the empty holder until it is secured in position.
^
Close the dust compartment lid firmly. When the lid is closed the holder automatically draws the bag collar over the inlet stub.
,
If there is no dustbag in the holder, or the dustbag has not been inserted correctly, the compartment lid will not close properly. Do not attempt to force the lid shut.

^
remove them from the slots. Fit the new thread lifters.
^
These are available from your Miele dealer or from the Miele Spare Parts Department.
24
Replacing one type of filter with another
Depending on model, your vacuum cleaner is fitted with one of the following exhaust filters as standard:
a SUPER air clean b ACTIVE air clean c HEPA
You may use one of the other filters instead of the one supplied as standard with your vacuum cleaner if you wish.
See "Accessories available as optional extras" for an explanation of the differences between the filter types.
Please note
1. If you wish to replace filter a with filter b or c, the filter frame in the lid of the
exhaust filter compartment must be removed. The new filter should be fitted in its place.
2. If you want to replace filter b or c with filter a the filter frame must be fitted in the lid of the exhaust filter compartment.
To remove or insert the filter frame
^
Grasp the sides of the filter frame in the positions shown by the arrows and squeeze. The frame can then be inserted or removed as desired.
25
Cleaning and care
Always disconnect the vacuum
,
cleaner from the electricity supply for maintenance work and for cleaning. Switch off at the wall socket and remove the plug (pull on the plug, not the cable).
Vacuum cleaner and accessories
External surfaces of the vacuum cleaner and all plastic accessories can be cleaned with a dry cloth or a slightly damp cloth or with a proprietary cleaner suitable for plastic.
Do not use an abrasive cleaner,
,
a glass cleaner or an all-purpose cleaner. Because of their chemical composition they could cause serious damage to the plastic casing.
Dust compartment
The dust compartment can, if necessary, be cleaned using a dry duster, dusting brush or, if available, a second vacuum cleaner to suck the dust out.
,
Never immerse the vacuum cleaner in water or let it get wet. If moisture gets into the appliance there is the risk of an electric shock.
26
Accessories available as optional extras
Turbobrush
The Turbobrush is particularly suitable for vacuuming cut pile carpeting and is operated by the suction power of the vacuum cleaner. It has a rotating brush which is very effective at picking up thread, hairs and fluff.
It is also important to observe the flooring manufacturer’s cleaning and care instructions.
Hand-held Turbobrush
The hand-held Turbobrush is intended for vacuuming upholstery, mattresses, car seats, carpeted stairs and other areas inaccessible to the standard Turbobrush.
Electrobrush SEB 217
(standard or optional accessory depending on model)
(Only for models with an Electrobrush socket)
The Electrobrush is particularly suitable for intensive vacuuming of carpets which are subject to hard wear. It is very effective at removing deep seated dirt and preventing areas of frequent use being trodden into a path.
It is also important to observe the flooring manufacturer’s cleaning and care instructions.
27
Accessories available as optional extras
Hard floor brush
(not available in all countries) for vacuuming smooth flooring, such as
stone, tiles, PVC.

31
Accessories available as optional extras
ACTIVE air clean filter
(standard or optional accessory depending on model)
This is a special active charcoal filter which absorbs odours from the dust collected in the dustbag. It helps, therefore to prevent the build up of odours.
The ACTIVE air clean filter can used in place of the existing filter. There is no difference in filtration level between the ACTIVE air clean filter and the SUPER air clean filter. See "Replacing one type of filter with another".
Do not use aroma capsules in your cleaner if it is fitted with this filter.
HEPA filter
(standard or optional accessory depending on model)
This is a HEPA class particle filter conforming to EN 1822. It is able to filter out very fine particles and microorganisms.
Vacuum cleaners equipped with this exhaust filter are particularly suitable for allergy sufferers and those concerned with a high level of hygiene.
The "HEPA filter" can be used in place of the existing exhaust filter. See "Replacing one type of filter with another".
Do not use aroma capsules in your cleaner if it is fitted with this filter.
32
The vacuum cleaner switches itself off.
A temperature limiter switches the vacuum cleaner off automatically if it gets too hot.
This can occur if, for instance, large articles block the suction tube or when the dustbag is full or contains particles of fine dust. A heavily soiled exhaust or dust compartment filter can also be the cause of overheating. In this case, please switch off the vacuum cleaner.
After removing the cause, wait for approx. 20 - 30 minutes, so that the vacuum cleaner can cool down. It can then be switched on again.
