Warning and Safety instructions
The use of the appliance by the elderly or infirm or those who have not used the appliance before should be supervised by a competent and responsible person to avoid the risk of injury.
This appliance complies with all relevant legal safety requirements. Incorrect use can, however, lead to personal injury and damage to the appliance.
To avoid the risk of accidents and damage to the appliance, read these instructions carefully before using it for the first time. They contain important notes on the installation, safety, operation and care of the appliance.
Keep these instructions in a safe place for reference and pass them on to any future user.
The electrical safety of this
~
appliance can only be guaranteed when continuity is complete between it and an effective earthing system which complies with current local and national safety regulations. It is most important that this basic safety requirement is present and tested regularly, and where there is any doubt, the household wiring system should be inspected by a qualified electrician. The manufacturer cannot be held liable for the consequences of an inadequate earthing system (e.g. electric shock).
Do not connect the appliance to the
~
mains electricity supply by an extension lead. Extension leads do not guarantee the required safety of the appliance (e.g. danger of overheating).
This equipment may only be used in
~
mobile installations such as ships, caravans, aircraft etc. if a risk assessment of the installation has been carried out by a suitably qualified engineer.
Building in and connection
If the appliance is supplied without a plug, or if the plug is removed, it must be connected to the mains electricity supply by a suitably qualified and competent person in strict accordance with current local and national safety regulations. The manufacturer cannot be held liable for damage caused by incorrect installation or connection.

Warning and Safety instructions
A cooker hood above the grill
This appliance should not be used
~
in conjunction with a hood that uses paper or carbon filters.
The open grill should not be used
~
with a recirculating cooker hood.
When placing this appliance below
~
an extractor, the outlet system of the extractor must be metallic throughout its length and heat proof.
The extractor outlet ducting must
~
comply with national and local building regulations.
Should any additional mechanical
~
ventilation be present then the effect of this additional ventilation on the combustion and flame performance of any existing appliances must be determined before any cooking appliances are used.
Distance from the grill to the hood
~
should be no less than 650 mm.
All fat filters in the extractor must be
~
cleaned regularly. Fat build up in the filter is a potential fire hazard.
Your Miele sales agent or the Miele
~
technical service department will be pleased to provide information on the correct installation of any Miele appliance.
Correct usage
For safety reasons this appliance
~
must only be operated after it has been built in. This is necessary to ensure that all electrical components are shielded.
This appliance is intended for
~
domestic use only and is not to be used for commercial purposes.
Use this appliance for the
~
preparation of food only. Any other usage is at the owner's risk and could be dangerous. The manufacturer cannot be held liable for damage caused by incorrect or improper use of the appliance.
Do not use the appliance to heat up
~
the room and never switch it on with the heating element in the raised position. Due to the high temperatures radiated, objects near the appliance could catch fire. The life of the appliance could also be reduced.
This appliance must not be set up or
~
operated in the open air
When using the grill, the grill trough
~
must always be filled with water.
6
Warning and Safety instructions
Safety with children
The appliance is only intended for
~
use by adults who have read these operating instructions.
This appliance is not a toy! To avoid
~
the risk of injury keep children well away and do not let them play with it or use the controls. They will not understand the potential dangers posed by it. They should be supervised whenever you are working in the kitchen.
Older children may use the
~
appliance only when its operation has been clearly explained to them, and they are able to use it safely, recognising the dangers of misuse. Supervise its use by the elderly or infirm.
The appliance gets hot when in use
~
and remains hot for quite a while after being switched off. To safeguard against burning, keep children well away from the appliance at all times.
To prevent the risk of children
~
burning themselves with potentially hot fat or oil please make sure that they cannot access the drain tap and open it.
Packaging, e.g. cling film,
~
polystyrene and plastic wrappings must be kept out of the reach of babies and young children. Danger of suffocation. Dispose of or recycle all packaging safely as soon as possible.
Old appliances must be
~
disconnected from the power supply, any plug rendered useless and the cable cut off directly behind the appliance to ensure it presents no danger to children while being stored for disposal.
Do not store anything which might
~

7
Warning and Safety instructions
Protecting the appliance from damage
When grilling or keeping food warm,
~
do not use pots and pans or similar on the open grill and never cover the rack (e.g. with aluminium foil) or use disposable aluminium foil containers. The resulting build-up of heat could damage the rack.
Do not drop anything on the glass
~
surface. Even a light object could cause damage in certain circumstances.
Do not use a steam cleaner to clean
~
this appliance. The steam could reach electrical components and cause a short circuit. Pressurised steam could also cause permanent damage to the surface and to other components, for which the manufacturer cannot accept liability.
KM 411-3
~
Take care when cleaning the control panel. It is susceptible to scratching and acidic agents. To prevent the risk of residual marks please wipe any soiling off as soon as possible.
In countries where there are areas
~
which may be subject to infestation by cockroaches or other vermin, pay particular attention to keeping the appliance and its surroundings in a clean condition at all times. Any damage which may be caused by cockroaches and other vermin will not be covered by the appliance guarantee.
Protection from burning and scalding
Never leave the grill unattended
~
while grilling is taking place. Overheated oil or residues of food or fat on the lava rocks could flare up and even set the cooker hood alight.
Should anything catch fire despite
~
this do not attempt to put the flames out with water. Instead extinguish the flames using a suitable fire blanket, damp towel or similar to smother the flames.
For added protection, it is advisable
~
to use heat-resistant pot holders or gloves when using the appliance. Do not let them get damp or wet, as this causes heat to transfer through the material more quickly with the risk of burning yourself.
Do not use the appliance as a
~
resting place for anything else. This could lead to a danger of the article beginning to melt or catching fire, if residual heat were still present or if the appliance was switched on by mistake.
Do not cover the appliance, e.g.
~
with a cloth, kitchen foil, etc. This could be a fire hazard if the appliance was switched on by mistake.
Clean the lava rocks regularly and
~
replace them when necessary. Rocks which are saturated catch fire easily. The grill trough and the lava rock container should be cleaned after each use to keep them free of oil and fat.
8
Warning and Safety instructions
Appliance faults
In the event of damage or a defect,
~
switch off the appliance immediately. Disconnect completely from the electricity supply. If the appliance has not yet been fully installed, the electricity cable must be disconnected from the supply point. If connected via a plug and socket, switch off at the socket and withdraw the plug. Contact the Service Department. Do not reconnect the appliance to the mains electricity supply until after it has been repaired.
If there is any damage to the glass
~
surface the appliance must be disconnected from the mains electricity supply immediately and not used until it has been repaired. Danger of electric shock.
Repairs must only be carried out by
~
a suitably qualified and competent person. Repairs and other work by unqualified persons could be very dangerous and could damage the appliance. The manufacturer cannot be held liable for unauthorised work. Never open the housing of the appliance.
While the appliance is under
~
guarantee, repairs should only be undertaken by a service technician authorised by the manufacturer. Otherwise the guarantee is invalidated.
Further safety notes
When using an electric socket near
~
the appliance, care should be taken that the cable of the electrical appliance does not come into contact with the hot appliance. The insulation on the cable could become damaged, giving rise to an electric shock hazard.
Always ensure that food is
~
sufficiently cooked or reheated. Many factors will affect the overall cooking time, including the size and amount of food and its temperature. Some foods may contain micro-organisms which are only destroyed by thorough cooking; therefore when cooking or reheating foods such as poultry, it is particularly important that the food is completely cooked through. If in doubt, select a longer cooking or reheating time.
If the appliance is installed in a room
~
without air conditioning in areas with high levels of humidity, there is a risk of moisture settling on the heater elements if it is not used for longer periods of time. When next used this could cause the fuse to trip. To prevent this risk it is advisable to switch the appliance on every 6 months for 15 minutes using the highest power setting. Make sure there are no flammable objects near the appliance during this process and do not leave the appliance unattended.
The manufacturer cannot be held liable for damage caused by non-compliance with these Warning and Safety instructions.
9
Caring for the environment
Disposal of the packing material
The transport and protective packing has been selected from materials which are environmentally friendly for disposal and can normally be recycled.
Packaging, e.g. cling film, polystyrene and plastic wrappings must be kept out of the reach of babies and young children. Danger of suffocation. Dispose of or recycle all packaging materials safely as soon as possible.
Disposal of your old appliance
Electrical and electronic appliances often contain materials which, if handled or disposed of incorrectly, could be potentially hazardous to human health and to the environment. They are, however, essential for the correct functioning of your appliance. Please do not therefore dispose of your old appliance with your household waste.
Please dispose of it at your local community waste collection / recycling centre and ensure that it presents no danger to children while being stored for disposal.
10
It should be unplugged or disconnected from the mains electricity supply by a competent person. If connected by a plug, the plug must be rendered useless and the cable cut off directly behind the appliance to prevent misuse.
Before using for the first time
General notes
Please stick the extra data plate for the appliance supplied with this documentation in the space provided in the "After sales service" section of this booklet.
Cleaning and heating up for the first time
Before using for the first time clean the grill trough and the rack with a solution of hot water and washing up liquid. Dry thoroughly with a soft cloth (see "Cleaning and care").
Clean all other appliance surfaces with a damp cloth only, and then wipe dry.
Metal components have a protective coating which may give off a slight smell when the appliance is heated up for the first time. The smell and any vapours will dissipate after a short time and do not indicate a faulty connection or appliance.
11
Use
Switching on and off
To switch the grill on or off the control can be turned in a clockwise or anti-clockwise direction. "0" is off.

12
.
.
10
.
8
The operating indicator light to the left of the control comes on when the grill has been switched on. It goes off after the grill is switched off.
Safety cut-out
A safety cut-out ensures that the heating element is only heated when it is lying horizontally and not when it is raised up.
12
Use
Before grilling
The grill can be used with or without the lava rocks. Without the lava rocks the rising steam keeps the food being grilled moist. Grilling with the lava rocks creates a particularly intensive aroma.
Prepare the grill as follows, before switching it on:
Make sure the drain tap is closed.
^
Take off the rack, lift up the heating
^
element, and if not being used, take the lava rock container out.
^ Fill the grill trough
– up to marker line a with approx. 2.5
litres of water when grilling without lava rocks.
– up to edge b with approx. 1.2 litres
of water when grilling with lava rocks.
If using lava rocks put the container
^
back in the grill trough.
Lower the heating element again,
^
and put the rack on it.
13
Use
Grilling
When grilling, watch the level of water in the trough. If necessary, add more water.
Do not use pots and pans or similar on the open grill and never cover the rack (e.g. with aluminium foil) or use disposable aluminium foil containers. The resulting build-up of heat could damage the rack.
Correct procedure:
Switch the appliance on.
^
Pre-heat the grill at setting "12" for
^
approx. 5 minutes.
Grill the food for a few minutes at the
^
highest setting.
Then switch down to "10" or "9" (with
^
food that tends to burn).
Turn the food once or more during
^
grilling.
14
Tips on grilling
To avoid spitting during grilling, dab
moist food dry with paper kitchen towel.
Salt food after grilling, and not before
as it could dry out too much.
Marinating often improves the flavour
of food to be grilled.
Brush food that has not been
marinated with a little oil. Only use oils that can be heated to a high temperature.

15
Use
Safety cut-out
A safety cut-out automatically switches the appliance off if the water level drops too low.
Add some cold water.
^
As soon as the appliance has cooled down, the grill element switches back on again and you can continue grilling.
After grilling
Proceed as follows:
Switch the grill off.
^
Clean the grill after each use while it
^
is still warm to the touch (see “Cleaning and care”).
After grilling check the appearance
^
of the lava rocks. If the rocks look dark they are saturated with oil and must be cleaned or replaced.
16
General notes
Clean the appliance regularly, preferably after each use. Allow the appliance to cool down to a safe temperature before cleaning.
Cleaning and care
When using cleaning agents for stainless steel and glass surfaces you must follow the manufacturers instructions on the packaging.
Do not use a steam cleaner to clean this appliance. The steam could reach electrical components and cause a short circuit. Pressurised steam could cause permanent damage to the surface and to components, for which the manufacturer cannot accept liability.
Do not use any sharp pointed objects which could damage the seal between the glass surface and the surrounding frame and between the frame and the worktop.
Do not use any of the following as they can damage the surface: cleaning agents containing sand, soda, alkalines, acids or chlorides, grill and oven sprays, dishwasher cleaner, stain or rust removers, scouring agents or cream cleaners, abrasive sponges and brushes.
After cleaning use a soft dry cloth to remove any moisture to prevent a build up of limescale deposits.
Wipe any soiling off the control panel immediately to prevent the risk of residual marks.
E-Cloth
A microfibre "E-Cloth" is available from the Miele UK Spare Parts Department, which is suitable for cleaning surfaces such as stainless steel, glass, plastic and chrome without the use of chemicals.
Aggressive cleaning agents and sponges can, however, be used on the grill element itself.
17
Cleaning and care
Rack, Lava rock container, Heating element
Clean the rack and lava rock container after each use with a solution of hot water and washing up liquid. Soak to loosen any burnt on food which can then be removed with a brush. Use a gentle scourer on any residue left on the heating element. Dry throughly after cleaning.
Do not use cleaning agents for stainless steel on the lava rock container.
Lava rocks
Clean the lava rocks regularly.
Put the rocks into a suitable container and fill with a solution of hot water and washing up liquid. Leave to soak for a while. Stir the rocks several times. Then pour the washing up liquid solution away and rinse the rocks two to three times with clean water. Place the rocks out to dry on a suitable towel.
18
Grill trough
After grilling, allow the water in the
^
trough to cool down before draining it.
Place a suitably large container
^
under the drain tap underneath the grill.
Open the drain tap by turning it
^
anti-clockwise a as far as it will go.
^ After the water has drained out, close
the tap by turning it clockwise b as far as it will go. Check that you cannot turn it any further.
Cleaning and care
Ensure that the underside of the grill is always easily accessible for draining water. Always wait until the water has cooled down before draining to avoid the danger of being scalded!
Do not use cleaning agents for stainless steel on the grill trough.
^
Fill the grill trough with a solution of hot water and washing up liquid and wash out thoroughly.
^
Drain the suds solution into a suitable container and then clean the drain outlet with a bottle brush. Finally rinse the grill trough out with hot water and and then dry both the reservoir and the drain outlet thoroughly.
19
Cleaning and care
Stainless steel surround
Clean the stainless steel surround with hot water and a little washing up liquid applied with a soft sponge. Wipe dry using a soft cloth. Soak stubborn soiling first to loosen it.
Stainless steel surfaces can be cleaned using a Miele E-Cloth or a proprietary non-abrasive cleaning agent designed specifically for use on stainless steel.
To help prevent re-soiling, a proprietary conditioning agent for stainless steel, such as Neoblank (available from the Miele Spare Parts Department) can also be used. Follow the manufacturer's instructions on the label and apply sparingly with an even pressure following the direction of the grain.
Control panel
Clean the surface and control with a damp cloth only, and then wipe dry.
For the glass control panel you can use a proprietary glass cleaning agent afterwards. Follow the manufacturer's instructions.
20
Installation work and repairs to electrical appliances must only be carried out by a suitably qualified and competent person in strict accordance with current local and national safety regulations (BS 7671 in the UK). Repairs and other work by unqualified persons could be dangerous. The manufacturer cannot be held liable for unauthorised work.
