Warning and safety instructions
This appliance complies with all relevant legal safety requirements. Improper use of the appliance can, however, present a risk of both personal injury and material damage.
Before installation and before using the appliance for the first time, read the operating instructions carefully. They contain important notes on safety, on the operation and care of the appliance. This way you will avoid the risk of accidents and damage to the appliance. Do not let children access the appliance or its controls. Supervise its use by the elderly or infirm.
Keep these instructions in a safe place and pass them on to any future user.
Correct usage
The appliance is intended for do-
mestic use to cook food. Any other usage is at the owner’s risk and could be dangerous. The manufacturer cannot be held responsible for damage caused by improper use of the appliance.
Technical safety
Before connecting the appliance
to the mains supply make sure that the voltage and frequency correspond to the rating on the data plate. Consult a competent person if in doubt.
The electrical safety of this ap-
pliance can only be guaranteed when continuity is complete between the appliance and an effective earthing system, which complies with local and national regulations. It is most important that this basic safety requirement is tested by a qualified electrician. The manufacturer cannot be held responsible for the consequences of an inadequate earthing system.
This appliance must only be oper-
ated as a built-in appliance. This is necessary to ensure that all electrical components are shielded.
Installation work and repairs may
only be carried out by suitably qualified and competent persons to ensure safety. Repairs and other work by unqualified persons could be dangerous.
The appliance is only completely
isolated from the electricity supply when:
– it is switched off at the wall socket – or the mains fuse is withdrawn – or the screw-out fuse is removed (in
countries where this is applicable)
Do not connect the appliance to
the mains electricity supply by an extension lead. Extension leads do not guarantee the required safety of the appliance.

Warning and safety instructions
Use
Caution, danger of burning! High temperatures are produced by the hob cooking areas.
Great care should be taken to ensure that small children do not touch the appliance when it is being used. The hob can become quite hot. Turn pan handles away from the edge to prevent children from pulling pans over.
When switched on the cooking
areas heat up. A residual heat indicator shows whether a cooking zone is hot.
Apart from pans with contents do
not place any metallic object on the hob. It could heat up. There is a danger of burning.
In the event of any breakages or
cracks occurring in the ceramic hob it must be switched off immediately and disconnected from the electricity supply. Contact the Service Department. Do not use the hob until the damaged ceramic plate has been replaced. Continued use would be dangerous as liquids etc. boiling over could penetrate to the electrical components through any crack.
Do not use the hob as a resting
place for any other objects. This could lead to a danger of the article catching fire or melting, if there is any residual heat.
Do not drop anything on the ce-
ramic hob. Even a light object such as an egg cup, could cause damage in certain circumstances.
Do not allow either solid or liquid
sugar or pieces of plastic or alumium foil to get on to the cooking zones when they are hot. If this should occur, turn to a lower setting but do not switch off. Immediately scrape off all the sugar, plastic or aluminium remains from the hob with a shielded razor blade scraper, taking care not to burn yourself. If these residues are allowed to cool before the hob surface has been cleaned, the ceramic surface will be susceptible to pitting or even cracking.
Do not use any pots or pans on the
ceramic hob with bases with pronounced edges or ridges. These could scratch or scour the hob surface permanently.
Do not push enamelled pots or
pans such as chip pans across the ceramic hob as this can cause scratches to occur.
6
Warning and safety instructions
General notes
Under no circumstances use a
steam cleaner to clean this appliance. Pressurised steam could give rise to a short circuit, or cause permanent damage to the surface and to components, for which the manufacturer of the oven cannot accept any responsibility.
Do not leave the appliance unat-
tended when cooking with oils and fats as these can be a fire hazard if allowed to overheat.
Do not use plastic or aluminium foil
containers. These melt at high temperatures. Additionally they could damage a ceramic hob as they melt.
Do not use the ceramic hob to
heat up the room. Due to the high temperatures radiated, objects left near the hob could catch fire.
When using kitchen appliances
connected to sockets near the ceramic hob, ensure that the cable cannot come in contact with the hot cooking zones, which could melt the cable insulation and be dangerous.
Always ensure that food is suffi-
ciently cooked or reheated. Many factors will affect the overall cooking time, including the size and amount of food, its temperature, changes to recipe and the shape and size of cooking container. Some foods may contain micro organisms which are only destroyed by thorough cooking, therefore when cooking or reheating foods, e.g. poultry, it is particularly important that food is fully cooked through. If in doubt select a longer cooking or reheating time.
It is important that the heat is
allowed to spread evenly throughout the food being cooked. This can be achieved by stirring and/or turning the food, and by observing a sufficiently long standing time, which should be added to the time needed for cooking, reheating or defrosting.
In countries which may be subject
to infestation by cockroaches or other vermin, pay particular attention to keeping the appliance and its surroundings in a clean condition at all times. Any damage which might be caused by cockroaches or other vermin will not be covered by the appliance guarantee.

Warning and safety instructions
Use of accessories
After using the scraper ensure the blade is shielded before putting it
away.
Keep these instructions in a safe place and pass them on to any future user.
Disposal of your old machine
Before discarding an old machine
switch off and disconnect it from the power supply. Cut off and render any plug useless. Cut off the cable directly behind the machine to prevent misuse.
The manufacturer cannot be held liable for damage caused by noncompliance with safety instructions.

Safety feature
Lock for hob
The hob lock can be used to prevent the cooking zones from being switched on inadvertently, when used either with the oven, or oven with built-in hob controls. It does not apply to the warming zone.
The operating instructions for the oven with built-in hob controls or the control unit describe how to set the hob lock.
9
Hob controls
The cooking zones are controlled by heat regulators.
Only turn the cooking zone control as far as it will go in a clockwise direction and back again. Turning the control any other way could damage it.
The display for the cooking zone lights up when the cooking zone is switched on. The colour of the display will deepen from a light shade for a low setting to a red for the highest setting
The cooking zone controls are fitted with an "Auto heat-up" feature. This is activated when the cooking zones are switched on. After reaching an initial high temperature the "Auto heat-up" the automatically switches to the continuation setting choosen, and the heat is lowered accordingly, without the need for manual intervention.
The length of the "Auto heat-up" time depends on the setting selected. Different heat-up times have been programmed for settings 1 – 7 (for boiling) and 8 – 12 (for frying). The "Auto heat-up" period increases in step with settings 1 – 7; from 8 – 12 however the times are shorter. If the setting within range 1 – 7 is altered during the "Auto heat-up" period the period will lengthen accordingly.
If you wish you can turn "Auto heat- up" off:
Turn the cooking zone control to a setting.
The setting must be higher than the one required.
After 10 seconds turn the control to the setting required.
The "Auto heat-up" is now inactivated.
For cookers and control units with a clock timer
When the two front zones are being used for cooking they can be switched on or off automatically independently of each other.
If the pan is removed from the cooking zone when "pan recognition" has been activated, the cooking zone will switch itself off, but the "Auto heat-up" period will continue to count down.

Cooking hints
Place all ingredients in a pan and cover.
Turn the control to the setting required for continuation cooking between 1 – 7 (see chart).
Switch off the zone when the food is cooked.
Example: Boiled potatoes
Put 1 kg of peeled potatoes into a pan and cover with 0.25 litres of salted water. Place on the 18 cm Ø cooking zone.

Description of the hob
Cooking zones - diameters
The cooking zones are clearly marked on the hob surface.
Only the particular zone which has been switched on will beheated. The rest of the hob surface remains relatively cool.
Residual heat indicator
There is an indicator light for each cooking zone in the hob display field. When a cooking zone is switched on its indicator lights up. This also serves as a residual heat in- dicator, which stays on after the cooking zone has been switched off, and only goes out when this area of the ceramic surface has reached a temperature safe to touch.
Pan recognition
Each cooking zone has a "pan recognition" feature. With this the zone only starts heating up once a pan has been placed on it.
"Pan recognition" reacts when a pan of a suitable metal is used.
It also reacts when any object of a suitable metal is placed on it, so it is very important to switch the zone off immediately after use for cooking.
When the pan is removed, the flow of energy is interrupted. The indicator light in the hob display field for that zone flashes.
When the pan is placed back on the zone the zone switches on again and the light stays on constantly.
If you are using a pan made from non-metallic material, e.g. glass, ceramic, you can turn off the "pan recognition" feature as follows:
12
Turn the control anti-clockwise beyond the figure "0" until the control light comes on.
Then turn the zone control clockwise to the setting required.
To reactivate the "pan recognition" feature again turn the zone control to "0".
Extended cooking zones
Use the corresponding cooking zone control to switch on the extended zone.
There is an indicator light in the hob display field for each extended cooking zone. This lights up when the cooking zone extension is switched on.
Turn the control in a clockwise direction until a resistance is felt. Otherwise it can be damaged.
Turn the control clockwise beyond setting 12 to the symbol "
Then turn to the setting required.
Turning the control back to "0" – switches off the cooking zone, – switches off the cooking zone exten-
sion.

Hobs - use
Choice of suitable pans
Attention to correct choice and use of pans – will help you obtain the best cooking
result most economically,
– and generally avoid food boiling
over and sticking.
Pan bases
For maximum economy of electricity when cooking or frying, only use pans with a flat or very slightly concave base. When hot the pan will rest evenly on the hob. Modern saucepans for electric cookers are the most suitable and efficient for use on ceramic cooking zones.
Size of pan
The diameter of the saucepan or frying pan should be very slightly larger than that of the hotplate/cooking area.
Pan lids
Cooking with the lid on the pan retains the heat.
14
Hobs - use
Notes on the use on hobs
Take care before starting to cook that there is no grit or sand on the surface of the hob.
This would scratch the surface, especially if a pan was pushed across.
Do not use any pots or pans where the base has ridges or a pronounced edge.
These could also cause scratches.
Do not push roasting tins or baking trays etc across the ceramic surface. Scratches could occur.
Aluminium or stainless steel pans with aluminium bases can leave marks with a metallic sheen on the ceramic surface. Clean these away at the earliest opportunity, (see Section on Cleaning and Care).
Never leave boiled-over sugar or syrups, plastic items or aluminium foil on the hob. If this does happen, turn the hob to a lower setting, but on no account switch it off. Use a shielded scraper blade to scrape off the sugar, plastic or foil residue thoroughly.
If these residues are allowed to cool before the hob surface has been cleaned, the ceramic surface will be susceptible to pitting or even cracking.
15
Cleaning and care
Ceramic hob surface
In general you can use the same cleaning agents for the ceramic hob surface as you would for ordinary glass surfaces.
Never use scouring agents or pads, or strong cleaners such as oven sprays or stain removers, as these could harm the surface.
Clean after each use Any minor spills which have not
dried on can be wiped off with a
damp cloth or sponge. If washing up liquid or a similar cleaner is used, light blue staining might occur.
These stains can be removed with a proprietary ceramic hob cleaning agent, although it may take several applications.
For stubborn spillages use a shielded razor blade scraper.
Then wipe with a damp cloth or sponge.
Removing marks Light marks with a metallic sheen
(aluminium desposits) on the hob surface can be removed once the hob has cooled down by using a suitable proprietary cleaner.
16
Lime deposits (caused for example by water boiling over, or damp pan bases) can be removed with vinegar or a proprietary hob cleaner.
Cleaning and care
Removal of sugar, or syrups, plastic or aluminium foil
Do not let the hob cool down. Scrape the sugar or other residue thoroughly from the hob with a shielded razor blade scraper.
When the hob is cool, switch off and clean with a proprietary cleaner.
Suitable cleaners
There are proprietary cleaners on the market for cleaning ceramic hobs. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
Do not apply to the hob when still hot.
After applying the cleaner let it dry and then rub it off using paper kitchen towels.
Remove every trace of cleaner from the hob with a damp cloth. It could have an adverse effect on the hob when heated up.
Some cleaners incorporate a silicone ingredient which acts as a protective film on the hob. It makes the hob surface smoother and prevents water and soiling adhering to the surface.
However, cooking at high temperatures reduces the effect and the cleaner needs to be reapplied for renewed effect.
By always cleaning the ceramic surface with one of these special cleaners you will help to avoid the damage caused by sugar and syrups and aluminium foil deposits.
17
Correcting minor faults
Installation, maintenance and repairs to the electrical components of this appliance should only be carried out by a fully competent person. Unauthorised repairs can be dangerous.
Some minor problems however can be dealt with as follows:
What to do if . . .
. . . A slight smell is given off briefly when the hob heats up for the first time?
This is not a fault but is caused by the moisture in the insulation dissipating.
. . . The hob cooking zones do not warm up after being switched on
Check to see whether the control display is illuminated.
. . . A cooking zone switches itself off during use?
This is not a fault. If the cooking zone is used for an unusually long period of time the safety switch is activated.
The length of time, between approx 1 – 10 hours, depends on the setting which has been programmed. The higher the setting the shorter the time before the automatic safety switch is activated.
To use the cooking zone again:
Turn the cooking zone control first of all to another setting and then back to the setting originally used.
If the setting is altered during the cooking process the time will be calculated according to the most recently selected setting.
If not, check whether:
the hob lock is activated. the house mains fuse has blown.
Contact a qualified electrician or the Miele Service department.
18
Correcting minor faults
. . . The contents in the pan are not properly cooked or have not started to cook?
Check whether:
You are using a pan with a heat retaining bottom surface.
The heat from the bottem of the pan will transfer slowly to the food.
You are using too large a pan.
In both of the above cases, choose a higher heat-up level or bring to the boil at setting 12 and then turn down.
. . . The indicator light in the hob display is flashing?
The "pan recognition" feature is not operating.
Check whether:
You are using a non-metallic pan. If so switch off the "pan recognition".
There was a delay in placing the pan on the cooking zone after it was switched on. In this case it is necessary to turn the cooking zone control back to "0" before the hob can be brought into use again.
