Warning and Safety instructions
This appliance meets statutory safety requirements. Inappropriate use could however lead to risk of accidents to the user and damage to the appliance.
Read the operating instructions before using this machine for the first time. They contain important information about the safety, use and maintenance of the machine. This will avoid the risk of accidents and damage to the machine.
Keep these operating instructions in a safe place and ensure that new users are familiar with the content. Pass them on to any future owner of the machine.
Warning and Safety instructions
Appropriate use of the cooker hood
The appliance is intended for do-
mestic use only. The manufacturer cannot be held responsible for any damage caused by improper use or by non-observance of these instructions.
Technical safety
Before connecting the cooker
hood to the mains supply make sure that the voltage and frequency details given on the data plate correspond with the on-site electricity supply. If in doubt consult a qualified electrician.
The electrical safety of this ap-
pliance can only be guaranteed when continuity is complete between the appliance and an effective earthing system which complies with local and national regulations. It is most important that this basic safety requirement is tested by a qualified electrician. The manufacturer cannot be held responsible for the consequences of an inadequate earthing system. (e.g. electric shock).
Installation work and repairs may
only be carried out by suitably qualified and competent persons to ensure safety. Repairs and other work by unqualified persons could be dangerous.
5
Page 6
Warning and Safety instructions
The appliance is only completely
isolated from the electricity supply when: – it is switched off at the wall socket and the plug removed, (do not pull on the cable, only on the plug) – the mains fuse is withdrawn; – or the screw-out fuse is removed, (in countries where this is applicable). Ensure current is not restored to the appliance while maintenance or repair work is being carried out.
Do not connect the appliance to
the mains electricity supply by an extension lead. Extension leads do not guarantee the required safety of the appliance.(e.g. danger of overheating)
Use of the appliance
The appliance is not intended for
use by young children or infirm persons without supervision. Young children should be supervised to ensure that they do not play with the appliance.
Never use an open flame beneath
the cooker hood - to avoid the danger of fire do not flambé or grill dishes. When switched on the cooker hood could draw flames into the filter. Fat particles drawn into the cooker hood present a fire hazard.
When using the cooker hood over
a gas hob ensure that any burners in use are always covered by a pan. Otherwise flames could be drawn up by the suction of the cooker hood, parts of which could then be damaged.
Always switch the cooker hood on
when a cooking zone is in use, otherwise condensation may collect in the hood, which could cause corrosion.
When cooking with oil or fat, chip
pans and deep fat fryers etc, do not leave the pans unattended. Overheated oil and fat can ignite and could set the cooker hood on fire.
Do not use the cooker hood with-
out the grease filter in place. This way you will avoid the risk of grease and dirt getting into the appliance and hindering its smooth operation.
6
Page 7
Warning and Safety instructions
The filters should be regularly
cleaned, or changed, as appropriate. Saturated filters are a fire hazard.
Some washing-up liquids or dish-
washer detergents may cause the metal filter to discolour. This discolouration will in no way affect the function or fitness for use.
Under no circumstances use a
steam cleaner to clean this appliance. Pressurised steam could give rise to a short circuit, or cause permanent damage to the surface and to components, for which the manufacturer of the cooker hood cannot accept any responsibility.
In countries which may be subject
to infestation by cockroaches or other vermin, pay particular attention to keeping the appliance and its surroundings in a clean condition at all times. Any damage which might be caused by cockroaches or other vermin will not be covered by the appliance guarantee.
Installation
The distance between the top of
the hob and the bottom of the cooker hood (when the vapour guide is completely retracted) must measure at least:
45 cm above electric hobs65 cm above gas hobs.
(Australia: 60 cm for electric and gas hobs)
Only for U.K.: The distance of
65 cm between the cooker hood and a gas hob is a minimum, which is only permissible if the nominal heat ratings given in the table below are not exceeded:
Gas cooker maximum
nominal rating
one burner 2.7 kW all burners 7.5 kW oven 3.5 kW
Gas hob maximum
nominal rating
one burner 3.5 kW all burners 10.3 kW
Gas hob with ceramic cover plate
The data given for maximum nominal (heat) ratings do not aply to a gas hob with a ceramic cover plate. In this case it is essential to refer to the hob manufacturers data.
Safety regulations prohibit the fit-
ting of a cooker hood over solid fuel stoves.
All ducting, pipework and fittings
must be of non-flammable material. These can be obtained from the Miele Spare Parts department or from builders merchants.
The appliance must not be con-
nected to a chimney or vent flue which is in use. Neither should it be connected to ducting which ventilates rooms with fireplaces.
If exhaust air is to be extracted into
a chimney or ventilation duct no longer used for other purposes, take professional advice.
7
Page 8
Warning and Safety instructions
When using the cooker hood at the
same time as another heating appliance which depends on the air in the room, (e.g. gas, oil or coal fired heaters, continuous flow or other water heaters, gas cooker, gas hob or gas oven) special care must be taken, as the action of the cooker hood extracts air from the room, which these types of heater need for combustion.
In order to ensure safe operation, and to prevent the gases given off by the heating appliances from being drawn back into the room when the extractor and the heater are in operation simultaneously, an underpressure in the room of 0.04 mbar (4 pa) is the maximum permissible.
Ventilation can be maintained by air inlets which cannot be blocked, in windows, doors and outside wall vents, or by other techical measures, such as ensuring that the extractor can only be switched on when the heating appliance is switched off or vice-versa.
only for appliances with external fans
For appliances with an external fan
motor fitted (EXT models) the connection of the two units must be made using the connection cable and the plug connectors. Make sure the correct combination of the two appliances has been selected.
Disposal of an old machine / appliance
Before discarding an old machine
unplug it. Render the plug useless. Cut off the cable directly behind the appliance to prevent misuse.
The manufacturer cannot be held responsible for any damage caused by non-observance of these instructions.
N.B.: The overall ventilation condition of the dwelling must be taken into account.
If in any doubt, the advice of a competent builder or, for gas, a “Corgi” installer must be sought. If the cooker hood is operated in recirculation mode (with active charcoal filter) then this is not a factor.
8
Page 9
Descripton of the functions
The cooker hood works with
. . . Air extraction:
The air is drawn in and cleaned by the grease filters and directed outside.
The cooker hood is fitted with a non-re- turn flap. This flap is closed when the cooker hood is switched off. No exchange of room air and outside air can take place. When the cooker hood is switched on the non-return flap opens for the cooking smells to be blown directly outside.
. . . Recirculation:
The air is drawn in and cleaned first by the grease filters. In addition it is then cleaned by the active charcoal filter. The cleaned air is then recirculated back into the kitchen through a vent in the top of the cooker hood.
Descripton of the functions
. . . an external fan
The ...EXT models of cooker hoods are designed to be connected with an ex- ternal fan.
The external fan is connected to the cooker hood by means of a control cable and is operated by the control panel on the cooker hood.
Before using the cooker hood for the first time, ensure that the active charcoal filter is in place, see section on "Cleaning and care".

Cleaning and Care
Cleaning and Care
Before any cleaning or maintenance work the cooker hood must be disconnected from the mains supply by – switching it off at the wall socket and removing the plug (do not pull on the cable, only on the plug), or
the mains fuse is withdrawn, or the screw-out fuse is removed, (in
countries where this is applicable).
Housing
The cooker hood housing may be cleaned using hot water to which a little mild detergent has been added. Dry with a soft cloth.
An over-greasy filter is a fire hazard.
Some washing-up liquids or dishwasher detergents may cause the metal filter to discolour. This discolouration will in no way affect the function or fitness for use.
Never use a cleaner which scours or contains chlorine, acids or soda. These would damage the surface of the cooker hood.
A mild, non-abrasive proprietary stainless steel cleaner is suitable.
Grease filters
Re-usable metal grease filters are fitted which remove solid particles (oil, dust, etc.) from the kitchen vapours, preventing soiling of the cooker hood.
The grease filters should be cleaned regularly, but always clean immediately the grease filter touch control lamp comes on.
To remove a grease filter press the hand hold catch towards the middle of the filter.
Remove the filter. Clean the filters
by hand: with a scrubbing brush in
hot water with detergent.
in a dishwasher: place the filters
with the short side upright in the lower basket, ensuring the spray arm is not obstructed.
After cleaning leave the filters to dry for a while on an absorbent surface before putting them back in place.
16
Page 17
Cleaning and Care
When removing the filters for cleaning also clean off any residues of oil or fat from the now accessible housing to prevent the risk of these catching fire.
When putting the grease filters back ensure that the handhold catches face towards the hob.
Should the grease filters be put back upside down, insert a small screwdriver into the slits to disengage them. Do not let them drop on to the hob below.
Active charcoal filter
If the cooker hood is connected for recirculation, an active charcoal filter must be inserted in addition to the grease filters. Charcoal filters absorb normal kitchen odours.
Remove the grease filters.
Insert the active charcoal filter so that the catch faces towards the hob.
Always change the active charcoal filter when the indicator lamp for the charcoal filter touch control comes on. Otherwise the cooker hood will cease to absorb the kitchen odours sufficiently. Replace the filter at least every 3-4 months.

Motor unit
(only for appliances with an integrated fan)
26
First loosely screw the two stiff nuts on the threaded bolts of retaining plate A. Leave enough space to be able to hang the motor on afterwards.
Mount the motor unit into the hooks of retaining plate A and slide down behind the nuts.
Tighten the nuts.

Installation
Control unit
(only for EXT models)
With EXT model (external fan) cooker hoods, the control unit is fitted and secured with stiff nuts, instead of the motor unit.
Electrical Connection
Important:
After the vapour (canopy) guide and the motor unit or the control unit have been secured, the cooker hood must be connected to the electricity supply before the tower is fitted.
First insert the 6 pole and the 15 pole connectors of the vapour guide into the corresponding couplings on the motor unit or control unit.
Then insert the plug into the socket.
With EXT models:
On these models, the connecting cable is also laid from the control unit to the external fan and connected by means of a 6 pole connector.

Extraction connection
Only use narrower diameter pipework where it is unavoidable, for example where existing pipework has to be used. The narrower the diameter the lower the performance and the noiser the operation.
Extraction connection should only be carried out by a competent person in accordance with building regulations.
Important
If the exhaust ducting is to run through rooms, ceiling space etc. where there may be great variations in temperature between the different areas, the problem of sweating or condensation will need to be addressed.
The exhaust ducting will need to be suitably insulated.
In addition to insulating the exhaust ducting we recommend that a suitable condensate trap is also installed to collect and evaporate any condensate which may occur.
Condensate traps are available from the Miele Spare Parts Department.
When installing a condensate trap ensure that it is positioned vertically and if possible directly above the exhaust connection.
For extraction connection the flexible hose is to be secured with a hose clip to the vent socket of the motor. The top end is led to the open air through the wall or ceiling cut-out.
Proceed with the further steps for extraction connection. (See section on Connection for air extraction).

Installation
Recirculation connection
If the site conditions are not suitable for the cooker hood to be used for air extraction, the appliance must be connected for recirculation.
Push the directional unit on to the top retaining plate.
Extension piece
An extension piece allows the cooker hood to be fitted at varying distances from the ceiling (see section on Appliance dimensions).
The extension piece has openings at each side. These are for use when the appliance is being used for recirculation.
Recirculation Extraction
For recirculation, the extension piece is fitted with the openings at the top.
Secure the flexible hose with the hose clips to the directional unit and to the exhaust socket of the motor unit.
Active charcoal filters are available from the Miele Spare Parts Department or some Miele dealers.
Set the operating hours counter for the active charcoal filter (see section on Altering the filter operating hours counter - Active charcoal filter)
For extraction, the openings are not required. In this case the extension piece is fitted with the openings at the bottom. They are then covered by the tower shaft.

Bend the top hanging retainers approx. 45° inwards. This makes fitting easier.
Installation
For recirculation make sure that the openings in the extension piece are positioned at the same height as the air outlets in the directional unit of the fan motor.
Screw the extension piece firmly to the upper retaining plate at each side with two screws 3.9 x 7.5 mm.
Cover the screw heads with the cover caps supplied.
Only for recirculation
Fit the recirculation grilles into the extension piece and into the directional unit behind so that the slats point downwards.
Recirculation Extraction
Pull the extension piece slightly outwards and push over the upper retaining plate.
Protective sheets
The paper protective sheets avoid scratching the extension piece when the tower is being fitted. They are removed when fitting is complete.
31
Page 32
Installation
Fold each protective sheet at the top. Remove the protective foil round the
sticking points. Stick the protective sheet to the ex-
tension piece so that it is smooth at the sides and flush at the bottom.
DA 216, DA 217, DA 219 only:
A protective cardboard sheet prevents the chimney piece being scratched during fitting.
Fitting the tower
Hold the main shaft gently apart and fit it over the extension piece.
Then push the shaft downwards approx. 2 cm into the canopy.
Remove the foil from the adhesive strips on the protective sheet.
Attach the protective sheet on the front of the chimney piece such that it protrudes slightly beyond the bottom edge.
32
Adjust the shaft. Remove the protective sheets from
the extension piece and chimney piece.
Now secure the shaft with 2 screws
3.9 x 7.5 mm. Cover the heads of the screws with
the caps supplied.

Connection for air extraction
Connection for air extraction
Danger of toxic fumes. Please heed the Warning and Safety instructions to avoid the danger of toxic fumes.
The cooker hood should be installed according to local building regulations. Seek approval from the building inspector where necessary.
Connection for air extraction
– The extraction ducting should be as
short and straight as possible.
– To ensure efficient air extraction the
diameter of the exhaust ducting should not be less than 125 mm.
The use of flat ducting also reduces the air extraction efficiency.
The use of extraction ducting with a diameter of less than 125 mm and of flat ducting increases the noise level of the cooker hood.
– If the exhaust air is to be ducted into
the open air the installation of a telescopic wall vent is recommended.
– If the exhaust air is to be ducted into
a vent flue the ducting must be directed in the flow direction of the flue.
– Only use wide radius bends. Tight
bends reduce the air throughput of the cooker hood.
– Only use smooth or flexible pipes
made from non-flammable materials for extraction connection.
– When ducting is horizontal it must be
laid to slope away at 1 cm per metre, to ensure no condensate drains into the appliance.

Connection to an external fan
Connection to an external fan
EXT model cooker hoods are designed for use with an external fan, i.e. the fan is fitted outside the room in a position of your choice.
Electrical connection is made via a connecting lead with plug and coupling.
Separate fitting instructions are supplied with the external fan.
