Introduction
Welcome to Forza Horizon! In this guide, you’ll find a brief and informative look at the world of
Forza Horizon, complete with everything you need to know to get up and exploring the open roads
of Colorado.
Forza Horizon was developed by Playground Games in association with Turn 10 Studios.
Playground Games brings a great deal of racing game experience to the Forza series, and the
studio is comprised of some of the game industry’s most creative development talent, including
talented developers from respected racing studios such as Codemasters, Bizarre Creations, Black
Rock Studios, and more. Based in the U.K., Playground Games has worked to bring a new vision of
the Forza franchise with Forza Horizon; the result is a game that combines the faithful authenticity
that Forza fans expect with raw, white-knuckle racing and an open world full of action and surprises.
As the creators of the critically acclaimed Forza Motorsport series for Xbox, Turn 10 Studios has
built a reputation as the creators of authentic, immersive, and innovative racing games. The studio’s
last game, 2011’s Forza Motorsport 4, was a multiple winner of “2011’s Racing Game of the Year”
awards from international press, and ranks as one of the highest-rated racing games of all time.
At its heart, Forza Horizon has been created with the following goals in mind:

Action Racing
Lighting up the asphalt in a prime specimen of American
Muscle. Tearing around the freeways of the Montano Plains
in a Lamborghini Aventador. Crashing through picnic tables
while behind the wheel of a Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X
GSR. However you choose to drive, the world of Forza
Horizon is your automotive playground, as you race, crash,
and cruise around a world built for the best cars around.
Everything you do in Forza Horizon revolves around driving with style--drifting around corners,
narrowly avoiding oncoming traffic, or catching air off a ridge are just a few examples. The more stylishly
you drive, the better the chances are you’ll be noticed and make your way up the ranks of the Horizon
Festival.
Competition Meets Culture
Here’s something that could only exist in
videogames: a raging car and music festival where
speed limits aren’t just discouraged, they’re actively
ignored! That’s what the Horizon Festival—your
setting in Forza Horizon—is all about. Featuring
music from today’s leading artists across a spectrum
of genres, the Horizon Festival is the visual and
musical heart of Forza Horizon. The Horizon Festival is also your functional hub in the game. It’s here
that you’ll buy and sell cars, customize the cars you already own, get online to take on the community,
shop the marketplace, and more.
Forza DNA
Hop in the car of your choice in Forza Horizon. From the moment you hit the gas, you’ll know
you’re driving a Forza game. Every car in Forza Horizon is built from the same physics system that
underpins the award-winning Forza Motorsport games. Each car has its own handling and feel,
and each car requires a slightly different touch to coax the most from it. In Forza Horizon, every
car has a personality—it’s up to you to find out which of the game’s cars agree with your
personality and preferred driving style.
As with every Forza game, the car is the star in Forza Horizon. To that end, Forza Horizon has
been built with a focus on quality, depth, innovation, authenticity, and the support of a growing
and passionate community of car lovers.
Forza Horizon represents a new expression of the Forza franchise. It’s about exploring some of the
world’s best driving roads in the car of your dreams. It’s about new races, unique challenges, and
surprises around every turn. It’s about music and style and pure unadulterated fun, set in a world
that is fueled by a passion for everything automotive.
This is Forza Horizon—where cars belong. Let’s get started!
HORIZON | page 3
Page 5
Forza Horizon – Where Cars Belong
In the opening moments of Forza Horizon, you’ll
meet Darius Flynt, the current top driver at the
Horizon Festival. Flynt is the guy you’ll need to
beat to obtain automotive supremacy in Forza
Horizon. Along the way, you’ll take on a crowded
field of star drivers in your bid to prove yourself
as the best the Horizon Festival has to offer.
But before any of that, you’ll race Flynt on the open roads of Colorado in the opening sequence of
the game. In automotive terms, Flynt is armed to the teeth, driving his mint condition Ferrari 599.
Don’t worry, though, you’re behind the wheel of no slouch – the 2013 Viper GTS. Take to the roads of
Colorado and see how you fare against the current king of the Horizon Festival!
Once the opening race against Darius Flynt is complete, it’s time to hop behind the wheel of a car
that’s only slightly more modest than your Viper – the 1995 Volkswagen Corrado VR6. It’s in this
modest tail-happy ride that you’ll be met with your first Forza Horizon goal – to get to the Horizon
Festival itself… and fast! As the DJ on your car radio explains – the next ten drivers to make it to the
gates of the Horizon Festival will earn a free entry as a competitive driver. It’s time to straighten out
some Colorado curves and let your lead foot down – the Horizon Festival is calling!
Forza Physics + Open World = Forza
Horizon
If you’ve played a Forza Motorsport game
before, you will feel right at home in Forza
Horizon. The same authentic physics that
powered the Forza Motorsport series are in play
here in Horizon. As a result, every car should feel
like it has unique handling characteristics and
capabilities—a personality—all its own. If you’ve
never played a Forza game before, you’ll be able to choose from a spectrum of driving assist and
difficulty options to precisely dial in the driving experience you want to have. Experts can turn on
simulation steering and switch off the TCS and ABS – while beginners can turn all assists on and let
the familiar Forza “green line” show them the best way to manage Colorado’s trickier corners. It’s up
to you.
While the cars in Horizon are designed to be authentic recreations of their real-life counterparts,
driving them in Horizon has a flair and feel all its own. After all, Forza Horizon is an open-world
game, and you are free to roam wherever you like. Bust through picnic tables, become a
fence-worker’s worst nightmare, or treat the Forza “green line” as nothing more than a suggestion –
whatever it takes to make sure yours is the lead car across the finish line is allowed in Forza Horizon.

The Horizon Festival
Horizon Festival – This is the headquarters of Forza Horizon. Home to the hottest summer music festival
around, the Horizon Festival also serves as the hub of your automotive experience in the game. Day or
night, you’ll find plenty to do here including:
• Autoshow – This is where you can buy and sell cars from Forza Horizon’s massive collection of car
manufacturers.
• Dak’s Garage – Upgrades are the name of the game at Dak’s Garage. You can choose to
automatically upgrade your car, or improve the individual parts yourself. Dak’s is also where you can
switch between any of the cars in your collection, and collect barn find cars that Dak has restored for
you.
• Paintshop – No car is truly yours until it’s seen time in the paintshop. Horizon’s decal and vinyl system
is based on the same renowned customization system from the previous Forza Motorsport games,
and it’s only limited by your imagination. You can also access the design storefront here, where you
can search from a massive base of liveries and creations designed by the Forza community. In Forza,
unless you’ve painted a car with a custom livery, it’s not really yours. We’re kidding of course, but
taking advantage of the livery editor in Forza Horizon really is one of the best ways to make your car
your own.
• Marketplace – This is your one-stop shop for Forza Horizon add-on content.
• Race Central – This is where you pick up the new wristbands you’ve earned as you progress through
Forza Horizon. In addition, you can access all Rivals events here – including new monthly Rivals events
added on a regular basis by the Forza community team.
• Car Club – Here’s where you can create or join a Forza Horizon Car Club. As a member of a club, you
can share cars from your garage with your fellow club members, compete against your friends, or test
your mettle against other Car Clubs.
You’ve made it and you’re in! Welcome to the Horizon Festival – a gathering of cars, culture, and style.
Not long after your arrival, you’ll meet Alice Hart; she’s your contact at the Horizon Festival, and she’ll act
as your guide as you progress through your Festival career. She’s always good for tips on things like new
events to try, money-making tips, and more, so pay attention to what she has to say.
You’ll also meet Dak Stewart – he’s the head mechanic over at Dak’s Garage, which is your hub for
everything car-related in Forza Horizon. Here, you can upgrade your car (either automatically, or by
choosing the parts yourself ), select between your saved upgrade setups, collect barn finds, and switch
between the various cars you own.
With the introductions out of the way, it’s time to get in some racing. The “Horizon Heats” event is your
first official race event and, in order to prove your way into the Horizon Festival (and earn your first
Horizon wristband), you’ll need to finish in the top three.
HORIZON | page 5
Page 7
*Find Your Difficulty* – While Forza Horizon is a fun driving experience right out
of the box, there are lots of difficulty options to choose from. In the options menu, you can adjust
things like automatic braking, steering, traction control, shifting, damage type, driving line, rewind, and
opponent difficulty, allowing you to dial in the perfect challenge level to suit your driving style. The less
assists you use, the greater the difficulty and larger the reward in credits at the end of races.
Showcase Events and More – Racing in Forza Horizon
Once you’ve earned your yellow wristband — the first of many you’ll earn during your Forza Horizon
journey — you’ll be invited to your first showcase event. These race showdowns are all about
entertaining the crowd with races that couldn’t happen anywhere but in Forza Horizon. For example,
you first event — called “Mustang vs. Mustang” — will pit you in a 1970 Ford Mustang Boss 429
against… a P51 Mustang. Yes, an airplane. Showcase events offer the kind of automotive experiences
you won’t find anywhere else and are spread throughout your career in Forza Horizon. Best of all – if
you manage to win a showcase event, you’ll win a new car to add to your garage.
Showcase events are just one example of the plethora of race events that will challenge your driving
skill in Forza Horizon. Here’s a brief look at some of the others:
Festival Events – The most common events in Forza Horizon, Festival Events are found all over
Colorado and are organized by wristband color. As you graduate to progressively higher wristbands,
you’ll gain access to new events to try. Many of these events have specific entrance requirements –
including car make, drivetrain, Performance Index, and so on. If your current car is not eligible for an
event, you will be prompted to choose a car from your garage that is eligible; similarly, if your current
car is either not powerful enough (or too powerful), you’ll have the option to let the game automatically upgrade your car (or remove upgrades) to ensure it fits an event’s entry requirements.
A word about Performance Index -- Performance Index (or PI, as it’s commonly known) is a quick
and easy way to determine a car’s performance capabilities. Cars are divided into specific PI classes (A,
B, C, etc.) and further subdivided by a PI number. A car with a PI of B520 is quicker than a lower class
C425 PI car. Similarly, for cars within the same class, the car with the higher PI number is quicker. You
can adjust a car’s PI by upgrading your car with new parts. To upgrade your car, visit Dak’s Garage in
the main Festival hub.
HORIZON | page 6
Page 8
Star Showdowns – Face off against a roster of the top drivers at the Horizon Festival. As you
progress through the game, you’ll be challenged by the festival’s best drivers. These are some of
Forza Horizon’s toughest races and the stakes are high – beat your rival and you’ll win his or her car.
Outposts – As you travel through Colorado, you’ll find occasional outposts dotting the map. Once
discovered, these outposts act as fast-travel hubs for you Horizon. While fast travel to outposts costs
credits, you can lessen the damage to your wallet by competing in the Outpost PR Stunts at each
hub, including speed stunts, photo shoots, and skill stunts. Each time you beat a challenge, you’ll earn
a discount on fast travel to that Outpost. You can also access your garage and the paintshop at
Outposts.
Street Races – Not officially sanctioned by the Horizon Festival, these ad hoc race events are fast,
furious, and a great chance to improve your rep. Beat all of the street races in a race hub and win a
car for your Forza Horizon garage.
Rivals Mode Events – Every event you complete in Forza Horizon is automatically added to the
game’s online Rivals Mode event lineup. In Rivals Mode, you can challenge your friends and the Forza
universe by setting your best time at an event – each time you play a Rivals Mode event, you’ll find a
ghost car to race against. Beat that time and you’ll move your way up the leaderboards. In addition to
the Rivals Mode events based on the game’s single player events, be sure and check out the new
Rivals Mode events created by the Forza Horizon community team. With new challenges posted
each month, it’s just one of the ways Turn 10 and Playground Games plans to support Forza Horizon
in the months after the game’s launch.
*Smash Dak* – Have
you seen the Dak’s Garage signs on the
side of the road? Smash them to earn a
progressive discount on upgrade parts.

Popularity and Driving With Style – How To Become Popular
While winning races by getting across the finish line first is a key piece of becoming a great racer, in
“Forza Horizon,” it’s far from the only thing you can do. Driving with style, after all, is just as much fun
as reaching the checkered flag first. In Forza Horizon, you are rewarded for how you drive, no matter
where you are. Even if you’re just touring the countryside, you’ll periodically see a score pop up in the
middle of your screen – as these scores add up, they’ll increase your Horizon Festival popularity. The
more points you rack up, the more popular you’ll become – with the ultimate goal of becoming the
most popular driver at the Horizon Festival. As you move up the popularity ranks, you’ll earn
invitations to new Showcase events and a chance to win some of the hottest cars in the game.
Here’s a few of the moves that will rack up points for you behind the wheel:
Drifting – Getting tailhappy in Horizon is one of the great joys of open-road driving. Jam the
e-brake to knock your car’s rear loose and you’ll earn a big bonus – increase the difficulty by doing
the same on a dirt path and expect those points to dramatically rise.
Near Miss – Traffic is always a concern in Forza Horizon. Dodging in and out of “civilian” traffic is a
great way to impress the Horizon Festival attendees, and climb the popularity ranks in the process.
Wrecking – Sure, you want to keep your car clean in Forza Horizon. But, every so often, things
happen. That’s okay – taking out a road sign or the occasional fence, even sideswiping an opponent
Speed – It sounds obvious, doesn’t it? Go fast and
people will love you. It’s true in life (most of the time)
and it’s true in Forza Horizon – find a highway, step on
the gas, and watch the points pile up.
Combos – While any of the above maneuvers will earn
you popularity points, the Horizon Festival’s best drivers
know that combo linking is the best way to reach
stratospheric point totals. Linking any of these moves
together will create a combo chain that will multiply the
amount of points you earn. As quickly as they add up,
however, these point combos can be taken away with a
*Bust Out the Map*
– The Forza Horizon map is your
one-stop shop for events in Forza
Horizon. In addition to showing you all
of the roads and regions you can
explore in the game (you can even easily
see which roads you haven’t driven yet);
the map also gives you a quick and easy
reference to all of the events you are
eligible to enter (based on your current
wristband)
simple errant turn or crash.
In addition to raising your popularity, driving with style can also fatten your wallet in Forza Horizon.
By leveling up in certain driving style challenges, you’ll earn periodic credit rewards which you can use
on new cars, upgrades, or whatever you like.
Road Challenges – As you explore the Forza Horizon world you’ll come into contact with other
festival racers, identified by their names which float above their car. Fancy an impromptu race? Just
pull up behind and press the select button to challenge when the prompt appears on screen, and if
you win you get instant cash.
HORIZON | page 8
Page 10
Sponsor Challenges – Show off your skills as you drive around Colorado and you’ll earn credit
bonuses from Horizon sponsors. Drafting, drifting, near misses, even pure speed – the more stylish
you drive in the game, the more cash you’ll earn.
*Barn Finds* – Occasionally, you’ll
get a tip about a hot car tucked away in a remote
location in Colorado. These barn find locales will appear
on your map – take the time to explore the region and
search these cars out – the quality and rarity of these
barn find classics are surely worth the effort.
The Centennial State – Forza Horizon’s Colorado
The state of Colorado is your playground in Forza Horizon, home to some of the most spectacular
scenery in the world, as well as some of the best driving roads to be found. The Playground Games
team took incredible care when modeling their fictionalized version of Colorado in Forza Horizon –
taking tens of thousands of reference photos, recording hundreds of hours of video and, indeed,
driving all over the real state of Colorado in order to bring Horizon players a Colorado that feels
realistic and authentic and, most importantly, a place that’s full of variety, beauty, and roads that must
be driven to be believed.
Carson – If tearing through urban streets is your thing, you might want to make Carson one of your
first stops in Forza Horizon. Located in the northwest section of Forza Horizon’s Colorado, Carson is a
city full of office buildings, storefronts, and loads of tight 90-degree turns. In short, it’s a drifter’s
paradise… just watch out for that traffic!
Clifton Valley – Hot air balloons dot the sky as you speed down the I-76 freeway. Enjoy the
gorgeous fall colors of Clifton Valley, one of the largest expanses in Forza Horizon’s Colorado. From
rolling hills and beautiful mansions, to flat farmland and the local Carson Golf Course – Clifton Valley
has something for drivers of all stripes.
Gladstone – Lofty pine trees, running water, and lots of tunnels are just a few of the features you can
explore in the northern expanses of Gladstone. The colors of fall will surround you as you rip through
the mountain passes, with the Alpine peaks always visible outside your car window. It’s the perfect
setting to explore your car’s cornering limits, or scope out the perfect scene for a photograph.
Clear Springs – The area surrounding Clear Springs Lake is an off-roader’s dream. Take your favorite
4WD (or your Lambo, if that’s what suits you) up into the hills overlooking the water and kick up all
the rooster tails you like. Just watch out for traffic–your fellow Horizon attendees know all about the
charms of Clear Springs’ narrow dirt passages too.
HORIZON | page 9
Page 11
Montano Plains – If it’s raw speed you’re after, the Montano Plains are where you want to be. Home
to the I-70 freeway, the Montano Plains feature the fastest roads to be found in Forza Horizon bar
none. Though speed is king here, you might want to take a few moments to slow down and enjoy the
view from time to time. Whether it’s the geological grandiosity of the Red Rock mountain range to
the southwest or the bustling city of Carson in the north, there are a few good reasons for
observing—if not always obeying—the speed limit.
Red Rock – Aptly named, the Red Rock region
of Horizon’s Colorado is visually defined by the
fire-hued geological marvels that abound in the
area. Home to the Colorado Observatory, this
area is tucked away in the southwest corner of
the state – away from the hustle and bustle of
the Horizon Festival, but home to plenty of
action for those in search of it.
Redfoot Ranch – Here’s a home for all your
ponies – be they Mustangs or otherwise. The
Redfoot Ranch is a wide open expanse that
begs to be tackled at full speed. With gentle
hills and humble farmhouses, it’s a good place
to find some air, or the occasional hidden barn
find.
Eagle Ridge – This small bedroom community is not immune to the charms of the Horizon Festival.
You’ll find events that take advantage of the area’s tight corners and narrow streets, and it’s also a fine
place to explore when you want to see how the other half lives. A quick tip for explorers: Just east of
Eagle Ridge, you’ll find a dirt road that features one of the best views Horizon has to offer: a
gorgeous autumn tree canopy that begs to be photographed along with your favorite car.
Kettle Hills – From Eagle Ridge in the south, all the way west to the Finley Dam, Kettle Hills is an
playground awaiting your sense of automotive adventure. Dense forest and loads of elevation
changes abound, and it won’t be long before you find your favorite stretch of road.
Finley Dam – One of the most beautiful sites in Forza Horizon’s Colorado, the Finley Dam doubles
as both a great place to drive and an ideal spot for shutterbugs. You’ll be forgiven if you don’t stop to
take a snapshot upon your first visit to the locale – tearing across the Finley Dam at top speed is a
thrill that everyone should experience. One tip: A nighttime trip to Finley Dam in all its illuminated
glory is well-worth your time.
HORIZON | page 10
Page 12
Bunker – Completely surrounded by mountains, the tiny town of Bunker has loads of “Old West
mining town” charm. Those abandoned buildings may not be used for business any longer, but they
make for an awesome makeshift gymkhana course.
The Rockies – The majestic Rocky Mountains are perhaps Colorado’s defining characteristic and the
range’s peaks will make for a dramatic backdrop to some of the most thrilling driving roads in all of
Forza Horizon.
Beaumont – Nestled at the base of the Rocky Mountains, the small town of Beaumont is a slice of
picturesque Americana that also doubles as a great place to test your latest car. The town’s wide
streets are ideal for street races and hooning is encouraged. Don’t worry about the
neighbors—they’re car fans too.
*Speed Cameras* – As you drive
around Colorado, you’ll periodically zip past speed
cameras. These come in two flavors – top speed
cameras, which capture your speed at the moment you
pass it, and average speed cameras, sections of road
that record your average speed as you drive. Each time
you pass, the camera will compare your current speed
Turn on the Radio
With the Horizon Festival as its centerpiece, Forza Horizon is a music-lovers dream. But even if you’re
on the outskirts of Colorado in your favorite car, you’re never far away from great music. Forza
Horizon offers drivers three radio stations to choose from, featuring a variety of musical styles and a
unique DJ to accompany your journey; from the latest electronic music to hard-rocking hits that will
surely add some weight to your lead foot.
“Forza Horizon” features three unique radio stations with songs that are guaranteed to get your heart
racing:
o Horizon Bass Arena – A bleeding-edge mix of the latest electronic and dance music, from
dubstep to electro to drum & bass. If it’s got bass, you’ll find it here. Featured artists like Scuba,
Mord Fustang, and more bring their tunes to this ultimate party station.
o Horizon Pulse – An eclectic selection of indie festival favorites, remixed to keep you driving in
style. Look for tunes from the likes of Foster the People, Two Door Cinema Club, Empire of the
Sun, and more.
HORIZON | page 11
Page 13
o Horizon Rocks – Bands like Yuck, LCD Soundsystem, and The Enemy come together to sear your
ears with this all-rock station. Whether these bands are hitting the festival scene for the first time
in 2012 or are legends reforming for one last gig, you’ll find a diverse selection of music on this
station, all turned up to eleven.
Kinect GPS
Lost? Don’t know where to go next? Try the Kinect GPS feature. Using just your voice, Forza Horizon’s
Kinect-powered GPS feature will point you to wherever you want to go next, be it the Horizon Festival
itself, the event nearest you, and more, all without needing to pause the game and look for directions.
If you don’t have a Kinect, you can still use the in-game GPS feature by simply pausing the game and
accessing the “Map” feature.
For example, to easily find your next event while driving around, simply say “GPS. Next event.” Your
GPS will automatically calculate the route to the closest event and the path will show up as a familiar
green line on the road.
Multiplayer:
As with every Forza game, online play is a huge focus in Forza Horizon. After all, it’s one thing to take
on the challenging Forza AI and another thing completely to drive with the best drivers around the
world via Xbox LIVE. Forza Horizon supports online play for up to eight players via Xbox LIVE; here’s a
quick list of the different types of modes available for online play:
• Free roam – Start up a lobby, invite seven of your friends, and hit the open roads of Colorado
together in a free roam match where the only rules are the ones you make up as you go. Ideal
for car meetups, group photo sessions, or good old fashioned crash up derbies.
• Co-op Challenges – Online free roam mode also features cooperative challenges. Work
together with your friends to accomplish skill-based objectives – such as driving a certain
number of miles or taking a road trip from one landmark to another . To access these challenges,
set up an online free roam race, press “Pause” and choose the challenge you’d like to
play from the “Co-Op Challenge” menu.
HORIZON | page 12
Page 14
• Playground games – Playground games are the kinds of automotive events that could
never happen in the real world, and are incredibly fun in Forza Horizon. Modes like Cat &
Mouse and Tag (Virus) – already so popular on the closed tracks of Forza Motorsport 4 –
take on a new level of challenge, strategy, and excitement on Forza Horizon’s open road.
• User Generated Content – If you’re looking for some car customization ideas, your
best bet is the Forza Horizon community. Travel to the Paintshop area in the Horizon
Festival hub, where you can search through the thousands of user-created works of art
that you can purchase and add to your favorite car… or simply use as inspiration for your
next great UGC masterpiece.
• Rivals – Every single player event you beat in Forza Horizon automatically becomes a Rivals
event, where you can challenge your friends to set the top time on the leaderboard. In addition,
new custom events will be added on a regular basis by the Forza community team, offering new
challenges, new car and track combinations, and chances to win cool prizes.
• Hoppers – If you just want to jump online and get in a race, the Forza Horizon hoppers are for
you. No worrying about specific settings or car restrictions, just hop into our custom-created
lobbies and let us do the race-creating for you. As with Rivals events, the hoppers in Forza
Horizon are updated on a regular basis to keep things fresh, so check back soon for new
content!
DLC
Nobody does DLC like Forza. Expect to see monthly add-on packs for Forza Horizon after
launch, as well as new Rivals events and hoppers to play in and even an expansion pack with even
more content to explore. It’s all part of Forza’s commitment to making Forza Horizon a
place car fans will want to hang around for months to come.
