Protection of the environment
General notes
H
Environmental note
Daimler's declared policy is one of comprehensive environmental protection.
The objectives are for the natural resources that form the basis of our existence on this planet to be used sparingly and in amanner that takes the requirements of both nature and humanity into account.
You too can help to protect the environment by operating your vehicle in an environmentally responsible manner.
Fuel consumption and the rate of engine, transmission, brake and tire wear are affected by these factors:
R
operating conditionsofyour vehicle
R
your personal driving style
You can influence both factors. You should bear the following in mind:
Operating conditions:
R
avoid short trips as these increase fuel consumption.
R
always make sure that the tire pressures are correct.
R
do not carry any unnecessary weight.
R
remove roof racks once you no longer need them.
R
aregularly serviced vehicle will contribute to environmental protection. You should therefore adhere to the service intervals.
R
always have service work carried out at a qualified specialist workshop.
Personal driving style:
R
do not depress the accelerator pedal when startingthe engine.
R
do not warm up theenginewhen the vehicle is stationary.
R
drive carefully and maintain asafe distance from the vehicle in front.
R
avoid frequent, sudden acceleration and braking.
R
change gear in good time and use each gear only up to Ô of its maximum engine speed.
R
switch off the engine in stationary traffic.
R
keep an eye on the vehicle's fuel consumption.
Environmental concerns and recommendations
Wherever the operating instructions require you to dispose of materials, first try to regenerate or re-use them. Observe the relevant environmental rules and regulations when disposing of materials. In this way you will help to protect the environment.

the vehicle becomes stuck,e.g. on ahigh curboranunpavedroad
R
youdrive too fastover an obstacle, e.g. acurb or ahole in the road
R
aheavy object strikes the undercarriage or parts of the chassis
In situations like this, the body, the undercarriage, chassisparts, wheels or tires couldbedamaged without the damage being visible.Components damaged in this way can unexpectedly fail or, in the case of an accident, nolonger withstand the strain they are designed to.
If the underbody paneling is damaged, combustible materials such as leaves, grass or twigs can gather between the underbody and the underbody paneling. If these materials come in contact with hot
parts of the exhaust system for an extended period, they can catchfire.
In such cases, have the vehicle checked and repaired immediately at aqualified specialist workshop. If on continuing your journey you notice that driving safety is impaired, pull over and stop the vehicle immediately, paying attention to road and traffic conditions. In such cases, visit a qualified specialist workshop.

Information about electronic data acquisition in thevehicle
(Includingnotice pursuanttoCalifornia Code
§9951)
Please notethat your vehicle is equipped with devices that can record vehicle systems data. If your vehicle is equipped with mbrace (Canada: TELE AID), data is transmitted in the event of an accident.
This information helps, for example, to test vehicle systems after an accident and to continually improve vehicle safety. Daimler AG can access these data and submit them:
R
for safety research or vehicle diagnosis purposes
R
with the consentofthe vehicle owner
R
on the instruction of prosecuting authorities
R
for use in arbitration of disputes that involve Daimler AG, its subsidiaries or its sales and service organizations
R
as otherwise required or permitted by law
Please check your mbrace (Canada:TELE AID) purchase agreement to findout more aboutdata that can be recorded and transmittedbythissystem.
This vehicle is equippedwithanevent data recorder (EDR). The main purpose of an EDR is to record datathatwill assistin understandinghow avehicle’s systems performed in certain crash or near crash-like situations, suchasduringair bag deployment or when hitting aroad obstacle. The EDR is designed to record data related to vehicle dynamics and safety systems for ashort period of time, typically 30 seconds or less.
The EDR in this vehicle is designed to record such data as:
R
how various systems in your vehicle are operating
R
whether or not the driver and passenger seat belts are fastened
R
how far (if at all) the driver is depressing the accelerator and/or brake pedal and
R
how fast the vehicle is traveling
This data can help provide abetter understanding of the circumstances in which crashes and injuries occur.NOTE:EDR data
26
Introduction
is recorded by your vehicle only if anon-trivial crash situation occurs; no data is recorded by the EDRunder normal drivingconditions and no personal data (e.g., name, gender, age, and crash location) are recorded. However, other parties, such as law enforcement, can combine the EDRdata with the type of personal identification data routinely acquiredduringacrash investigation.
To read data recorded by an EDR, special equipmentisrequired, and access to the vehicle or the EDR is needed. In addition to the vehicle manufacturer, other parties, such as law enforcement, who have the special equipment, can read the information if they have access to the vehicle or the EDR.

WARNING
Modifications to the restraint systemscould result in them not functioning properly any more. The restraint systemscould then no
longer protect vehicle occupants as they are designed to do and could fail in the eventof an accidentoractivateunexpectedly, for example. Thereisanincreased risk of injury.
Never modify partsofthe restraint systems. Do notattempttomodify the wiring as well as electronic components or their software.
If it is necessary to modify an air bag system to accommodateaperson with disabilities, contact an authorized Mercedes-Benz center. USA only: for further information contact our Customer Assistance Center at 1-800-FOR-MERCedes (1800-367-6372).
In this section, you will learn the most important facts about the restraint system components of the vehicle.
The restraint system consistsof:
R
Seat belts
R
Child restraint systems
R
LATCH-type (ISOFIX) child seat securing system
Additional protection is provided by:
R
SRS (Supplemental Restraint System)
R
Air bag system components with:
-
PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF indicator lamp
-
Front-passenger seat with Occupant Classification System (OCS)
Although the systems are independent, their protective functions work in conjunction with each other. Not all air bags are always deployed in an accident.
i
For information on infantsand children traveling with you in the vehicle restraint systems for infantsand children, see "Children in the vehicle" (Y page 56).

G
WARNING
If SRS is malfunctioning, child restraint system componentsmay be triggered unintentionally or might not be triggered at all in the event of an accidentwith ahigh rate of vehicle deceleration. There is an increased risk of injury, possibly even fatal.
Have SRS checked and repairedimmediately at aqualified specialist workshop.
SRS functionsare checked regularly when you switchonthe ignition and when the engineisrunning. Therefore, malfunctions can be detected in good time.
The 6 SRS warninglamp in the instrument cluster lightsupwhen the ignition is switched on. It goes out no later than afew seconds after the engineisstarted.
The SRS componentsare in operational readiness when the 6 SRS indicator lamp goes out while the engineisrunning.
There is amalfunction if:
R
the 6 SRS warninglamp does not light up when the ignition is switched on
R
the engineisrunning and the 6 SRS warninglamp does not go out after afew seconds

Triggering of Emergency Tensioning Devices and air bags
Duringthe firststageofacollision, the airbag control unit evaluates important physical datarelating to vehicle decelerationor acceleration, suchas:
R
duration
R
direction
R
magnitude
Based on theevaluation of this data, theair bag control unit pre-emptivelytriggersthe Emergency Tensioning Deviceinthe first stage.
If there is an evenhigher rateofvehicle decelerationoracceleration in alongitudinal direction, the front airbags are also deployed.
Your vehicle has adaptive, two-stagefront air bags. The air bag control unit evaluates vehicle deceleration or acceleration in the eventofacollision. In the firstdeployment stage, the frontair bag is filled with enough propellantgas to reducethe risk of injuries. The front air bag is fully deployed if asecond deploymentthreshold is reached within afew milliseconds.
The Emergency Tensioning Device and air bag triggering thresholds are variable and are adapted to the detected rate of deceleration or acceleration of the vehicle. This process is pre-emptive in nature. The triggering process must take place in good time at the start of the collision.
The rate of vehicle deceleration or acceleration and the direction of the force are essentially determined by:
R
the distribution of forces during the collision
R
the collision angle
R
the deformation characteristics of the vehicle
R
the characteristics of the object with which the vehicle has collided
Factors that can only be seen and measured after acollision has occurred do not play a
Occupant safety
41
Safety
Z
decisive role in the deployment of an air bag, nor do they provide an indication of air bag deployment.
The vehicle may be deformed significantly, e.g. the hood or the fender, without an air bag being deployed. This is the case if only parts which are relatively easily deformed are affected and the rate of deceleration is not high. Conversely, air bags may be deployed even though the vehicle suffers only minor deformation. This is the case if, for example, very rigid vehicle parts such as longitudinal body members are hit, and sufficient deceleration occurs as aresult.
i
The frontEmergencyTensioning Devices can only be triggered if the seat belt tongues on the frontseats are correctly engaged in the seat belt buckles.
i
Not all air bags are deployed in an accident. The differentair bag systems work independently of each other.
How the air bag system worksis determined by predictingthe severity of the accident, especially vehicle deceleration or acceleration, and the type of accident:
R
head-on collision
R
side impact
R
rollover
Safety guidelines for seat belts, Emergency Tensioning Devices (ETDs) and air bags
G
WARNING
R
Damaged seat belts or seat belts that have been subjected to stress in an accident must be replaced. Their anchoringpoints must also be checked. Only use seat belts installed or supplied by an authorized Mercedes-BenzCenter.
R
Air bags and pyrotechnic Emergency TensioningDevices (ETDs) contain perchloratematerial, which may require special handlingand regardfor the
environment. Check your national disposal guidelines. In California, see
www.dtsc.ca.gov/HazardousWaste/ Perchlorate/index.cfm.
R
Air bags and ETDsare designed to function on aone-time-only basis. An air bag or ETD that has deployed must be replaced.
R
Do not pass seat belts over sharp edges. They could tear.
R
Do not make any modification that could change the effectiveness of the seat belts.
R
Do not bleach or dye seat belts, asthis may severely weaken them. In acrash, theymay not be able to provide adequate protection.
R
Do not make any modifications to the SRS wiringorcomponents.
R
Do not modifyorremove any components or partsofthe SRS.
R
Do not install additional trim material, seat covers, badges, etc.tothe:
-
padded steering wheel boss
-
knee bag covers
-
front-passenger air bag cover
-
outer side of front seat bolsters
-
outer seat bolsters of the rear bench seat backrest
-
roof frame trim
R
Do not install additional electrical/ electronic equipment on or near SRS components and wiring.
R
Keep the area between the air bags and occupantsfree of objects(e.g. packages, handbags, umbrellas etc.).
R
Do not hang any objects such as coat hangers on the coat hooks or the grab handle above the door. These items may be thrown around in the vehicle and cause head and other injuries when the window curtain air bag is deployed.
R
Air bag system componentswill be hot after an air bag has inflated. Do not touch them.
R
Never rest your feet on the dashboard or the seat. Always keep both feet on the floor in frontofthe seat.
42
Occupant safety
Safety
R
Improper repairwork on the SRS creates a risk of rendering the SRS inoperative or causing unintended air bag deployment. Work on the SRS must thereforeonly be performed by qualified technicians. Consult an authorized Mercedes-Benz Center.
R
For your protection and the protection of others, when scrapping the air bag unit or ETD, our safety instructions must be followed. These are available from any authorized Mercedes-Benz Center.
R
Given the considerable deployment speed, required inflation volume, and the material of the air bags, there is the possibility of abrasions or other, potentially more serious injuries resulting from air bag deployment.
If you sell your vehicle, Mercedes-Benz strongly recommends that you inform the subsequent owner that the vehicle is equipped with SRS. Also, refer them to the applicablesection in the Operator's Manual.
Air bags
Important safety notes
NEVERuse arearward facing child restraint system on aseat protected by an ACTIVE AIR BAG in front of it, DEATH or SERIOUS INJURY to the CHILD can occur.
G
WARNING
Using unsuitable seat covers could restrictor even preventdeployment of the air bags integrated into the seats. Consequently, the air bags cannot protectvehicle occupantsas they are designed to do. In addition, the function of the air bag deactivation system could be restricted. This poses an increased risk of injury or even fatal injury.
You should only use seat coversthat have been approved for the respective seat by Mercedes-Benz.
G
WARNING
The air bag parts are hot after the airbag has been deployed. There is arisk of injury.
Do not touch the air bag parts. Have the deployed air bags replaced at aqualified specialist workshop as soon as possible.
G
WARNING
Air bags are designed to reduce the incidence of injuries and fatalities in certain situations:
R
frontal impacts (driver's and frontpassenger frontair bags and driver's knee bag)
R
side impacts(side impact air bags and window curtain air bags)
R
rollover (window curtain air bags)
However, no system available today can completely eliminate injuries and fatalities.
When the air bags are deployed, asmall amount of powder is released. The powder generally does not constitute ahealth hazard and does not indicate that there is afire in the vehicle. In order to prevent potential breathing difficulties, you should leave the vehicle as soon as it is safe to do so. If you have any breathing difficulty but cannot get out of the vehicle after the air bag inflates, then get fresh air by opening awindow or door.
G
WARNING
In order to reduce the potential danger of injuries caused during the deployment of the front air bags, the driver and front passenger must always be correctly seated and wear their seat belts.
For maximum protection in the event of a collision, you must always be in the normal seat position with your back against the backrest. Fasten your seat belt and make sure that it is correctly positioned on your body.
Occupant safety
43
Safety
Z
As the airbag inflateswith considerable speedand force, aproper seating position and correctpositioning of thehands on the steering wheel will help to keep you at asafe distancefromthe air bag. Occupants who are notwearing their seat belt, are not seated properly or are too close to the air bag can be seriously injured or killed by an air bag, as it inflates with great forceinstantaneously:
R
sit with the seat belt fastened correctly and in aposition that is as upright as possible with your back against the backrest.
R
move the driver's seat as far back as possible, still permitting proper operation of vehicle controls. The distancefrom the center of the driver's chest to the center of the air bag cover on the steeringwheel must be at least 10 inches (25 cm). You should be able to accomplish this by adjustingthe seat and steeringwheel. If you have any difficulties, please contact an authorized Mercedes-Benz Center.
R
do not lean your head or chest close to the steeringwheel or dashboard.
R
only hold the steeringwheel on the outside. Placing hands and arms inside the rim can increase the risk and potential severityof hand/arm injury if the driver frontair bag inflates.
R
adjust the front-passenger seat as far back as possible from the dashboard when the seat is occupied.
R
occupants, especially children, should never place their bodies or lean their heads in the area of the door where the side impact air bag inflates. This could result in serious or fatal injuries should the side impact air bag be deployed. Always sit as upright as possible, wear the seat belt properly and use an appropriately sized infant restraint, toddler restraint or booster seat recommended for the size and weight of the child.
Failure to follow these instructions can result in severe injuries to you or other occupants.
If you sell your vehicle, it is important that you make the buyer aware of this safety information. Be sure to give the buyer this Operator's Manual.
If the air bags are deployed, you will hear a bang, and asmall amount of powder may also be released. Only in rare cases will the bang affect your hearing. The powder that is released generally does not constitute a health hazard and does not indicate that there is afire in the vehicle. The dust might cause some temporary breathing difficulty for people with asthma or other breathing trouble. To avoid this, you may wish to get out of the vehicle as soon as it is safe to do so. You can also open the window to allow fresh air to enter the vehicle interior. The 6 SRS warning lamp lights up.
The air bag installation locations are identified by the AIR BAG symbol.
The air bags are deployed if the air bag control unit detects the need for deployment.Only in the event of such asituationwill the air bags provide their supplemental protection.
If the driverand front passengerdonot wear their seat belts, it is not possible for the air bags to provide their supplemental protection.
In the event of other types of impacts and impacts below air bag deployment thresholds, the air bags will not deploy. The driver and passenger will then be protected to the extentpossible by aproperly fastened seat belt. Aproperlyfastened seat beltisalso needed to provide the best possible protection in arollover.
Air bags provide additional protection; they are not, however, asubstitute for seat belts. All vehicle occupants must fasten their seat belts regardless of whether your vehicle is equipped with air bags or not.
It is important for your safety and that of your passenger to have deployed air bags replaced and to have any malfunctioning air bags repaired. This will help to make sure the air bags continue to perform their protective

if the system determines that air bag deployment can offer additional protection to that provided by the seat belt
R
independently of other air bags in the vehicle
The release time of the front air bags is dependent upon the use of the seat belt.
If the vehicle rolls over, the front air bags are generally not deployed.
Your vehicle has adaptive, two-stage front air bags. The air bag control unit evaluates vehicle deceleration or acceleration in the event of acollision. In the first deployment stage, the front air bag is filled with part of the total available propellant gas, thereby
reducing the risk of injury. If the air bag control unit recognizes within afew milliseconds that the vehicle is being braked or accelerated faster than originally predicted, the front air bag is filled with the maximum amount of propellant gas available.
The deployment of the front-passenger front air bag is also influenced by the weight category of the front passenger, which is determined by the Occupant Classification System (OCS) (Y page 47).
The lighter the passenger-side occupant, the higher the vehicle deceleration rate required (predicted at the start of the impact) for second stage inflation of the front-passenger front air bag. In the second stage, the front air bags are inflated with the maximum amount of propellant gas available.
The front air bags are not deployed in situations where alow impact severity is predicted. You will then be protected by the fastened seat belt.
The front-passenger front air bag will only deploy if:
R
the system, based on the OCS weight sensor readings, detectsthat the frontpassenger seat is occupied
R
the PASSENGER air bag OFF indicator lamp on the center console is not lit (Y page 47)
R
the air bag control unit predicts ahigh impact severity

WARNING
Usingunsuitable seat covers could restrictor even preventdeployment of the air bags integrated into the seats.
G
WARNING
Sensors to control the air bags are located in the doors. Modificationsorwork not performed correctly to the doors or door paneling, as well as damaged doors, can lead to the function of the sensorsbeing impaired. The air bags might therefore not function properly any more. Consequently, the air bags cannot protectvehicle occupantsasthey are designed to do. There is an increased risk of injury.
Never modify the doors or parts of the doors. Always have work on the doors or door paneling carried out at aqualified specialist workshop.
You should only use seat coversthat have been approved for your vehicle by MercedesBenz. The seat covers must have aspecial tear seam for side impact air bags. Otherwise, the side impact air bags cannot deploy correctly and therefore cannot provide the intended protection in the event of an accident.
Front side impact air bags : and rear side impact air bags ; deploy next to the outer seat cushions.
When deployed, the side impact air bags offer additional protection of the thorax for occupants on the front seats as well as also of the pelvis for the vehicle occupants on the side of the vehicle on which the impact occurs. However, they do not protect the:
R
head
R
neck
R
arms
The side impact air bags are deployed:
R
on the side on which an impact occurs
R
at the start of an accident with ahigh rate of lateral vehicle deceleration or acceleration, e.g. in aside impact
R
independently of the use of the seat belt
R
independently of the front air bags
R
independently of the ETDs
If the vehicle rolls over, the side impactair bags are generally not deployed. Side impact air bags are deployed if the system detects high vehicle deceleration or acceleration in a lateral direction and determines that side impactair bag deploymentcan offer

additional protection to that providedbythe seat belt.
Sideimpactair bags will not deploy in side impacts which do not exceed the system's presetdeployment thresholds for lateral acceleration/deceleration.You will then be protected by the fastened seat belt.
The side impact air bag on the frontpassenger side is not deployed in the following situations:
R
OCS has detected that the front-passenger seat is unoccupied.
R
the front-passenger seat belt is not fastened.
The side impact air bag on the frontpassenger side will deploy if the frontpassenger seat belt is fastened, regardless of whether the front-passenger seat is occupied or not.
Window curtain air bags
Window curtain air bags : enhancethe level of protection for the head, but not chest or arms, of the vehicle occupantsonthe side of the vehicle on which the impact occurs.
Window curtain air bags : are integrated into the side of the roof frame and deployed in the area from the A-pillar to the C-pillar.
Window curtain air bags are deployed:
R
at the start of an accident with ahigh rate of lateral vehicle deceleration or acceleration, e.g. in aside impact
R
on the side on which an impact occurs
R
on thedriver'ssideand passenger side, in the event of avehiclerollover and if the system determinesthat airbag deployment can offer thevehicle occupants additional protection to that providedbythe seat belt

WARNING
Accordingtoaccidentstatistics, childrenare saferwhen properly restrained on the rear seats than on the front-passenger seat. Thus, we strongly recommendthat children be placed in the rear seats whenever possible. Regardless of seating position, children 12 years old and under must be seated and properly secured in an appropriate infant restraint, toddler restraint, orbooster seat recommended for the size and weight of the child.
The infant or child restraint must be properly secured with the vehicle's seat belt, the seat belt and Top Tether strap, or lower anchors and Top Tether strap, fully in accordance with the child seat manufacturer's instructions.
Occupants, especially children, should always sit as upright as possible, wear the seat belt properly and use an appropriately sized infant restraint, toddler restraint, orbooster seat recommended for the size and weight of the child.
Children can be killed or seriously injured by an inflating air bag. Note the following important information when circumstances require you to place achild in the frontpassenger seat:
R
Your vehicle is equipped with air bag technology designed to deactivate the front-passenger front air bag in your vehicle when the system senses the weight of a typical 12-month-old child or less along with the weight of astandard appropriate child restraint on the front-passenger seat.
R
Achild in arear-facing child restraint on the front-passenger seat will be seriously injured or even killed if the front-passenger front air bag inflates in acollision which could occur under some circumstances, even with the air bag technology installed in your vehicle. The only means to eliminate this risk completely is never to place achild in arear-facing child restraint in the frontpassenger seat. We therefore strongly recommendthat you always place achild

in arear-facingchild restraint on the rear seat.
R
If you install arear-facingchild restraint on the front-passengerseat, make sure the 45 indicator lamp is illuminated, indicating that the front-passenger frontair bag is deactivated. Should the 45 indicator lamp not illuminateorgoout while the restraint is installed, please check installation.Periodically check the 45 indicator lamp while driving to make sure that the 45 indicator lamp is illuminated. If the 45 indicator lamp goes out or remains out, do not transport achild on the front-passenger seat until the system has been repaired.
Achild in arear-facing child restraint on the front-passenger seat will be seriously injured or even killed if the front-passenger front air bag inflates.
R
If you place achild in aforward-facing child restraint on the front-passenger seat:
-
move the seat as far back as possible
-
use the proper child restraint recommended for the age, size and weight of the child
-
secure child restraint with the vehicle's seat belt according to the child seat manufacturer's instructions
R
For children larger than the typical 12month-old child, the front-passenger front air bag may or may not be activated.
G
WARNING
If the red 6 SRS warning lamp in the instrument cluster and the 45 indicator lamp light up simultaneously, the OCS is malfunctioning. The front passenger front air bag will be deactivated in this case. Have the system checked by qualified technicians as soon as possible. Contact an authorized Mercedes-BenzCenter.
Only have the seat repaired or replaced at an authorized Mercedes-Benz Center.
In order to ensure proper operation of the air bag system and OCS:
R
Sit with the seat belt properly fastened in a position that is as upright as possible with your back against the seat backrest.
R
When seated, apassenger should not position him/herself in such away as to cause the passenger'sweight to be lifted from the seat cushion as this may result in the OCS being unable to correctly approximatethe passenger'sweight category.
R
Read and observe all warnings in this chapter.
If the SmartKey is removed from the ignition lock or is in position 0,PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF indicator lamp : does not light up.
The Occupant Classification System (OCS) categorizesthe occupant on the frontpassengerseat using aweight sensor.
The front-passenger frontair bag is deactivated automatically for certain weight categories.

To be classified correctly, the frontpassenger must sit:
R
withthe seat belt fastened correctly
R
in apositionthat is as upright as possible with their back against the seat backrest
R

The OCS weight sensor reading is affected if the occupant's weight is transferred, e.g. by leaning on the armrest.
If the front-passenger seat, the seat cover or the seat cushion are damaged, have the necessary repair work carried out at a qualified specialist workshop.
For safety reasons, Mercedes-Benz recommends that you only use seat accessories that have been approved by Mercedes-Benz.
Both the driver and the front passenger should always observe the PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF indicator lamp as an indication of whether or not the front passenger is positioned correctly. Observe also the air bag displaymessages that can be displayed in the instrumentcluster (Y page 219).
If the driver's air bag deploys, this does not mean that the front-passenger front air bag will also deploy.
The OCS may have detected that the seat:
R
is empty or occupied by the weight of a typical child up to twelve months old, seated in achild restraint system.
R
is occupied by asmall individual, such as a young teenager or asmall adult.
R
is occupied by achild in achild restraint system whose weight is greater than that of atypical twelve monthold child.
These are examples of when the OCS deactivates the front-passenger front air bag. Deactivation takes place although the collision fulfills the criteria for deploying the driver's air bag.
For further information, see "Air bag display messages" (Y page 219).

G
WARNING
If the 45indicator lamp does not illuminate, the system is not functioning. You must contactanauthorized Mercedes-Benz Center beforeseatingany child on the front passenger seat.
G
WARNING
Never place anything betweenseat cushion and child seat (e.g. apillow), since it reduces the effectiveness of the OCS. The underside and rear side child restraint system must be placed entirely on the seat cushion and the backrest of the front-passenger seat backrest.
If necessary, adjust the tilt of the passenger seat backrest.
An incorrectly mounted child seat could cause injuries to the child in case of an accident, instead of increasing protection for the child.
Follow the manufacturer's instructions for installation of child restraint systems.
The PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF indicator lamp lights up:
R
if you turn the SmartKey in the ignition lock to position 1 or 2
R
if an adult is seated properly on the frontpassenger seat and the OCS classifies the occupant as an adult
The PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF indicator lamp goes out again after approximately six seconds.
If the seat is not occupied and the OCS detects that the front-passenger seat is empty, the PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF indicator lamp will continue to light up. The PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF indicator lamp will not go out.

Seat belts
Important safety notes
G
WARNING
The seat belt does not offer the intended level of protection if the backrest is not in the upright position. When braking or in the event of an accident, you could slide underneath the seat belt and sustain abdomen or neck injuries, for example. This poses an increased risk of injury or even fatal injury.
Adjust the seat properly before beginning your journey. Always make sure that the seat is in the upright position.
G
WARNING
Seat belts cannot protect as intended, if:
R
they are damaged, extremely dirty, bleached or dyed
R
the seat belt buckle is damaged or extremely dirty
R
the EmergencyTensioning Devices or the belt anchorage has been modified.
Damage caused to seat belts in an accident may not be visible, e.g. by splinters of glass. Modified or damaged seat belts can tear or fail, for example in the event of an accident. Modified EmergencyTensioning Devices may be deployed unintentionally or fail to be deployed when required. There is an increased risk of injury, possibly even fatal.
Never modify seat belts, Emergency Tensioning Devices, seat belt anchorages and inertia reels. Ensure that seat belts are not damaged or worn and are clean.
Only use seat belts that have been approved for your vehicle by Mercedes-Benz.
The use of seat belts and infant and child restraint systems is required by law in:
R
all 50 states
R
the U.S. territories
R
the DistrictofColumbia
R
all Canadianprovinces
Even where this is not required by law,all vehicleoccupants should correctly fasten their seat belts before starting the journey.

See "Children in the vehicle" (Y page56) for further information on infants and children traveling in the vehicle as wellasonchild restraint systems.
Proper use of the seat belts
G
WARNING
USE SEAT BELTS PROPERLY
R
Seat belts can only work when used properly.Never wear seat belts in any other way than as described in this section, as that could result in serious injuries in the event of an accident.
R
Each occupant should wear their seat belt at all times, because seat belts help reduce the likelihood of and potential severityof injuries in accidents, including rollovers. The integrated restraint system includes SRS (driver frontair bag, driver's side knee bag, front-passengerfront air bag, side impact air bags, windowcurtain air bagsfor the side windows), Emergency Tensioning Devices, seat belt force limiters, and front seat knee bolsters.
The system is designed to enhance the protection offered to properly belted occupants in certain frontal (front air bags, driver'sside knee bag and ETDs) and side (sideimpact air bags, windowcurtain air

Safety
bags, and ETDs) impactswhich exceed preset deployment thresholds and in certain rollovers (window curtain air bags and ETDs).
R
Never wear the shoulder belt under your arm, across your neckoroff yourshoulder. In afrontal crash, your body would move too far forward. That would increase the chance of head and neck injuries. The seat belt would also apply too much force to the ribs or abdomen, which could severely injure internal organs such as your liver or spleen.
Adjust the seat belt so that the shoulder section is located as close as possible to the middle of the shoulder. It should not touch the neck.Never pass the shoulder portion of the seat belt under your arm. For this purpose, you can adjust the height of the seat belt outlet.
R
Position the lap belt as low as possible on your hips and not across the abdomen. If the lap belt is positioned across your abdomen, it could cause serious injuries in acrash.
R
Never wear seat belts over rigid or breakable objects in or on your clothing, such as eyeglasses, pens, keys etc., as these might cause injuries.
R
Make sure the seat belt is alwaysfitted snugly. Take special care of this when wearing loose clothing.
R
Never use aseat belt for more than one person at atime. Do not fasten aseat belt around aperson and another person or other objects at the same time.
R
Seat belts should not be worn twisted. In a crash, you would not have the full width of the seat belt to distributeimpact forces. The twisted seat belt against yourbody could cause injuries.
R
Pregnant women should also alwaysuse a lap-shoulder belt. The lap belt portion should be positioned as low as possible on the hips to avoid any possible pressure on the abdomen.
R
Place the seat backrest in aposition that is as upright as possible.
R
Check your seat belt during travel to make sure it is properly positioned.
R
Never place your feet on the instrument panel, dashboard, or on the seat. Always keep both feet on the floor in front of the seat.
R
When using aseat belt to secure infant restraints, toddler restraints, or children in booster seats, alwaysfollow the child seat manufacturer'sinstructions.
G
WARNING
Do not pass seat belts over sharp edges. They could tear.
Do not allow the seat belt to get caught in the door or in the seat adjustment mechanism. This could damage the seat belt.
Never attempt to make modifications to seat belts. This could impair the effectiveness of the seat belts.
Fastening seat belts
G
WARNING
According to accident statistics, children are safer when properly restrained on the rear seats than on the front-passenger seat. Thus, we strongly recommendthat children be placed in the rear seat whenever possible. Regardless of seating position, children 12 years old and under must be seated and properly secured in an appropriately sized child restraint system or booster seat recommended for the size and weight of the child. For additional information, see the "Children in the vehicle" section.

Belt warning for the driver and front passenger
Everytime the engine is started, the 7 seat belt warning lamp lights up for six seconds. It lights up regardless of whether the driver's and front-passenger seat belts have already been fastened. If the driver's and front-passenger seat belts have already been fastened, the 7 seat belt warning lamp then goes out.
If the driver's seat belt is not fastened when the engine is started, an additional warning tonewill sound. This warning tonestops after amaximum of six seconds or once the driver's seat belt is fastened.
If after six seconds, the driver or front passenger have not fastened their seat belts and the doors are closed:
R
the 7 seat belt warning lamp remains lit as long as the driver's or front-passenger's seat belt is not fastened
and
R
if avehicle speed of 15 mph (25 km/h) is exceeded, the 7 seat belt warning lamp begins to flash. Awarning tone also sounds
withincreasing intensityfor amaximum of 60 seconds or until thedriver or front passenger have fastened their seat belts.
If thedriver/frontpassenger unfasten their seat belt while thevehicle is in motion, the 7 seat belt warning lamp lightsupand a warning tone sounds again.
The warning tone ceases evenifthe driver or front-passenger seat belt has still not been fastened after 60 seconds. The 7 seat belt warning lamp stops flashing but remains illuminated.
After the vehicle comes to astandstill, the warning tone is reactivated. The 7 seat belt warning lamp flashes again if the vehicle speed exceeds 15 mph (25 km/h).
The 7 seat belt warning lamp only goes out if:
R
both the driver and the front passenger have fastened their seat belts.

The ETDsare triggered depending on the type and severityofanaccident:
R
in the event of ahead-on or rear-end collision if the vehicle decelerates or accelerates rapidly in alongitudinal direction during the initial stages of the impact.
R
in the event of aside impact if the vehicle decelerates or accelerates rapidly in a lateral direction on the side opposite to the impact.
R
in certain situationswhere the vehicle rolls over if the system determines that it can provide additional protection.
If the ETDsare deployed, you will hear abang, and asmall amount of powder may also be released. Only in rare cases will the bang affect your hearing. The powder that is released generally does not constitute a health hazard and does not indicatethat there is afire in the vehicle. The dust might cause some temporary breathingdifficultyfor people with asthma or other breathing trouble. To avoid this, you may wish to get out
of the vehicle as soon as it is safe to do so. You can also open the window to allow fresh air to enter the vehicle interior. The 6 SRS warning lamp lights up.
If the seat belt is also equipped with aseat belt forcelimiter and this is triggered, the forceexerted by the seat belt on the vehicle occupant is reduced.
The seat belt force limiters for the front seats are synchronized with the front air bags, which take on apart of the deceleration force. This results in the force exerted on the occupant being distributed over agreater area.

Important safety notes
If you fail to adapt your driving style or become distracted, the driving safety systems can neither reduce the risk of
accident nor override the laws of physics. Driving safety systems are merely aids designed to assist driving. You are responsible for the distance to the vehicle in front, for vehicle speed and for braking in good time. Always adapt your driving style to suit the prevailing road, weather and traffic conditionsand maintain asafe distancefrom thevehicle in front. Drive carefully.
i
The driving safety systems describedonly work as effectivelyaspossible when there is adequatecontactbetween thetires and theroad surface. Pay particular attention to theinformationregarding tires, recommended minimum tire tread depths etc.inthe "Wheels and tires" section (Y page 312).
In wintry driving conditions, always use winter tires (M+S tires) and if necessary, snow chains. Only in this way will the driving safety systems described in this section work as effectively as possible.
ABS (Anti-lockBraking System)
General information
ABS regulatesbrake pressure in such away thatthe wheels do not lock when you brake. This allowsyou to continue steering the vehicle when braking.
The ! ABS warning lamp in the instrument cluster lights up when the ignition is switched on. It goes out when the engine is running.
Important safety notes
i
Observe the "Important safety notes" section for driving safety systems (Y page 63).
G
WARNING
If ABS is faulty, the wheels could lock when braking. The steerability and braking characteristics may be severely impaired. Additionally, further driving safety systems

are deactivated. Thereisanincreased danger of skiddingand accidents.
Drive on carefully. HaveABS checked immediately at aqualified specialist workshop.
When ABSismalfunctioning, other systems, including driving safety systems, will also become inoperative. Observe the information on the ABS warning lamp (Y page 239) and displaymessages which may be shown in the instrument cluster (Y page 208).
ABS works from aspeed of about5mph (8 km/h), regardless of road-surface conditions. ABS works on slippery roads, even if you only brake gently.
Braking
X
If ABS intervenes: continue to depress the brake pedal vigorously until the braking situation is over.
X
To make afull brake application:
depress the brake pedal with full force.
If ABS intervenes when braking, you will feel apulsing in the brake pedal.
The pulsating brake pedal can be an indication of hazardous road conditions, and functionsasareminder to take extra care while driving.
BAS (Brake AssistSystem)
General information
BAS operates in emergency braking situations. If you depress the brake pedal quickly,BAS automatically boosts the braking force, thus shortening the stopping distance.
Important safety notes
i
Observe the "Important safety notes"
section (Y page 63).
G
WARNING
If BAS is malfunctioning, the braking distance in an emergency braking situation is increased. There is arisk of an accident.

The distance warning function can help you to minimize the risk of afront-end collision with avehicle ahead or reduce the effectsof such acollision. If the distance warning function detectsthat there is arisk of a collision, you will be warned visuallyand acoustically.Without your intervention, the distancewarningfunction cannot prevent a collision.
Starting at aspeed of around4mph (7 km/h), the distancewarningfunction warns you if you rapidly approachavehicle in front.Anintermittentwarningtonewill then sound, and the · distancewarninglamp will light up in the instrumentcluster.
X
Brake immediately in order to increase the distancefromthe vehicle in front.
or
X
Take evasiveaction provided it is safe to do so.
Due to the nature of the system, particularly complicated but non-critical driving conditions may also cause the system to display awarning.
With the help of the radar sensor system, the distancewarningfunction can detect obstacles that are in the path of your vehicle for an extendedperiod of time.
Fromaspeed of around40mph (70 km/h), the distance warning function can also react to stationary obstacles, such as stoppedor parked vehicles.
If you approach an obstacle and the distance warning function detects arisk of acollision, the system will initially alert you both visually and acoustically.
In particular, the detectionofobstacles can be impaired if:
R
dirt on the sensors or anythingelse covering the sensors
R
snow or heavy rain
R
interferencebyother radar sources
R
thereare strong radar reflections, for example in parkinggarages
R
anarrowvehicle traveling in front, e.g. a motorbike
