Chapter 1: Introduction

Welcome
Thank you for choosing the Linksys PrintServer for USB with 4-Port Switch (PrintServer). The PrintServer will allow you to network your printers.
The Linksys PrintServer for USB with 4-Port Switch is a double upgrade for your network. First, it lets you connect a USB printer directly to your network, eliminating the need to dedicate a PC to print serving chores. Using a PrintServer frees up your "print share PC" so you don't have to leave it on all the time. It also removes the printing bottleneck, and sets your PC free to do more useful work.
In addition, the PrintServer includes a 4-port 10/100 switch, so you can easily add more devices to your network. All four ports are auto speed negotiating, and have automatic MDI/MDI-X crossover detection, so you don't have to worry about the cable type. Each port independently negotiates the best speed and half- or full-duplex mode, for up to 200Mbps of bandwidth per port. Fast store-and-forward switching prevents damaged packets from being passed on into the network.
A user-friendly Setup Wizard makes installation easy, the compact case fits anywhere, and the one megabyte print buffer size handles even large graphics-intensive print jobs. Let the Linksys PrintServer for USB with 4-Port Switch bring efficiency to your printing tasks and expand your network, in one cost-effective device.

1, 2, 3, 4 These LAN ports (1, 2, 3, 4) connect the PrintServer to your networked PCs and other Ethernet
network devices.
USB The USB port is where you will connect the USB printer to the PrintServer.
Whenever you see the USB Icon (right), a USB port is nearby. The PrintServer comes with one USB cable. One end of the USB cable has a rectangular plug, which is called a Type A connector (below left). The other end of the cable has a square plug, or a Type B connector (below right). The USB cable’s Type A end connects to the PrintServer and the Type B end connects to the printer.

Status Green. The Status LED will remain continuously lit when a printer is correctly connected to the
PrintServer. The LED will flicker when print jobs are being transmitted to the printer over the network.
USB Green/Orange. The USB LED lights up green when there is a printer connected. The USB LED
lights up orange when there is an error.
1, 2, 3, 4 Green. These numbered LEDs, corresponding with the numbered ports on the PrintServer’s
back panel, serve two purposes. If the LED is continuously illuminated, the PrintServer is successfully connected to a device through the LAN port. If the LED is flickering, the PrintServer is actively sending or receiving data to the wired network.

Chapter 3: Connecting the PrintServer

Overview
Before starting the physical installation, make a note of the PrintServer’s Default Name that is located on the bottom of the PrintServer. There is a bar code sticker with an SC number printed on it (for example, SCA71107). This number is used in the PrintServer driver installation.
Connecting the USB PrintServer to your Network
1. Plug one end of the Ethernet network cable into one of the PrintServer’s LAN Ports (1-4). (See Figure 3-1.)
2. Connect the other end of the cable into your networked hub, switch, or router. The distance between the PrintServer and the other device should not exceed 328 feet (100 meters).
3. Use the USB cable to connect your printer to the PrintServer’s USB port. Plug the Type A connector end into the PrintServer (Figure 3-2) and the Type B connector end into the printer.
4. Power on your printer.
5. Plug the power adapter cord into the PrintServer’s Power port, which is located on the right side of the PrintServer. (See Figure 3-3.)
6. Plug the power adapter into an electrical outlet.
NOTE: The PrintServer does not have an on/off power switch. Whenever its power adapter is plugged into a power supply, the PrintServer is powered on. The PrintServer can be powered on before, during, or after your network is powered on.

Chapter 5: Windows Driver Installation

Overview
This section installs the PrintServer’s software on your Windows 98, Me, 2000, or XP computers to give them PrintServer printing abilities. The PrintServer is fully compatible with Windows 98, Me, 2000, and XP.
At this point, you must have:
• the PrintServer hardware installed on your network. If not, see Chapter 3: Connecting the PrintServer.
• TCP/IP installed on each of your computers.
• an IP address assigned to each of the computers on your network..
• an IP address assigned to the PrintServer. By default the PrintServer has DHCP enabled. If you need to assign an IP address, go to Chapter 8: Bi-Admin: PrintServer Management.
• This setup should be completed on the network administrator’s computer before all other users’ computers on the network. The PrintServer’s IP address will be assigned in this first installation on the network administrator’s computer only, which takes three extra steps.
It is assumed that your CD-ROM drive’s letter name is designated as “D”. If your CD drive is named another letter, replace all instances of “D” with the appropriate letter.
If you need to install the PrintServer’s driver on computers without a CD-ROM drive, you can create a setup disk by using a computer with a CD-ROM drive to copy the contents of D:\Driver\PTP onto a floppy disk.
Installation
1. If you haven’t already done so, insert the Setup CD-ROM into the computer’s CD-ROM drive. The Setup CD-
ROM should run automatically. If it does not, click the Start button and choose Run. In the box that appears, enter D:\setupWizard.exe (if “D” is the letter of your CD-ROM drive).
2. When you see Figure 5-1, click User Install to continue. Click Exit to end the installation.
HAVE YOU:already set up your printer? Linksys recommends that you set up your printer and install your printer’s driver before you install the PrintServer’s driver.
