Overview
Printing or viewing issues of printer properties after upgrading printer drivers in client-server environments may occur. This happens in most cases, if a client’s print request interrupts the upgrade process which may result in mismatched driver versions.

4. Solutions
1. Recommendations for driver upgrades
1.1. To minimize interruptions, perform network printer driver upgrades when the machine is not used often.
• To minimize network trafc while clients download printer drivers, perform upgrades in well-planned stages
(Especially in large, complex network environments).
1.2. Do not allow local users with administrator privileges to upgrade printer drivers on client computers from windows update. As a result, mistmatched driver versions may occur across the entire network.
Kyocera certies KX Driver with every product release. These certied drivers are available in windows update, and local users with administrator privileges usually have sufcient access to install these updates.
• After a printer driver is installed locally on a computer, the computer’s spooler will try to upgrade the
printer driver on the print server, causing further printer driver mismatches across the entire network.
• All print servers and clients on the network should use the same driver version.
1.3. All print servers should use the same version of the KX Driver. Verify each device model’s driver version by clicking the Kyocera logo on the device settings tab of the device’s printer properties. The driver version can also be obtained by clicking the Kyocera logo in Printing Preferences.
• Install one Kyocera printer driver version for multiple device models, but not multiple driver versions for one device model. (For example, you can use KX Driver 5.3.1025 with TASKalfa 400ci models and KX Driver
5.3.1025a5 with FS-1128MFP models, but you can’t use KX Driver 5.3.1025 with one TASKalfa 400ci and KX Driver 5.3.1025a5 with another TASKalfa 400ci.)
• In a Citrix XenApp environment, the version of the printer driver installed on the Citrix XenApp server must match the version of the printer driver installed on the client. Printer objects are not automatically created or
mapped if the printer driver versions do not match.
2. Phenomena
The following phenomena may occur in the client after upgrading one of its printer driver from a print server:
• The message “Operation cannot be completed” appears when you try to open Printer properties or
Printing preferences from the Devices and Printers control panel.
• The message “Printer driver not installed, please install printer driver” appears when you try to print from an
application.
• The Device Settings tab is missing from Printer properties.

3. Causes
The Microsoft Windows print server and the client computer must have identical printer driver data sets.
A printer driver data set consists of synchronized driver les and registry values. When you upgrade a print server’s printer driver, the le names and time stamps of the les change.
The server print spooler monitors for that change and instructs the client spooler to retrieve the new drivers. The client spooler then determines when to retrieve the drivers. The sequence and timing of the driver upgrade is
controlled by the spooler subsystem.
The upgrade is interrupted if the client user opens Printer Properties or Printing Preferences, or tries to print.
This can leave the driver les and the registry values unsynchronized. Since the le names and dates have already been changed, the spooler does not instruct the client spooler to retrieve the new drivers. Since the registry values are not synchronized, existing printing-related registry entries may become corrupted, in which case users will encounter printing issues and the printer driver is unusable.
The issue are more common on networks with any of the following conditions:
• The network has a large number of clients
• Slow network conguration
• The network has a client with many mapped network printers that need updating

4. Solutions
4.1. On the client computer, local users with administrator privileges can delete the printer objects in the Devices and Printers control panel and reestablish the Point and Print connection to the shared printer on the server.
4.2. Kyocera Document Solutions offers a driver removal tool to help administrators work around this problem. The tool removes all Kyocera printer objects from the Devices and Printers control panel, deletes their registry entries, and deletes their printer driver les on the computer. The user can then properly install network printers that have been upgraded with the new driver. The tool can be run as a standalone program or as part of the user’s logon script (An example batch le is available). The driver removal tool is included in the Web installer version of KX Driver as “KmUninstall.exe” (Uninstaller).
Note: The driver removal tool resets printer driver settings to their factory default.
