Selecting a Power Source

The tablet PC can run on internal power from a charged battery pack or on external power. External power can be obtained from:
An AC electrical outlet, using the AC adapter.
Use only the AC adapter provided with the tablet PC, a replacement AC adapter provided by HP, or an AC adapter purchased as an option from HP.
A vehicle cigarette lighter receptacle, using an optional
Automobile Power Adapter/Charger.
The in-seat power supply available on some commercial
aircraft, using an optional Auto/Air Cable.
Select a power source according to the guidelines in the following table that supports the way you plan to use the tablet PC.

Understanding Standby and Hibernation

Standby and Hibernation are energy-saving features that conserve power and reduce startup time. They can be initiated by you or by the system.

Standby

Standby reduces power to system components that are not in use. When Standby is initiated, your work is saved in random access memory (RAM) and the screen is cleared. When you resume from Standby, your work returns to the screen where you left off.

Hibernation

Hibernation saves your work in RAM to a hibernation file on the hard drive, then shuts down the tablet PC. When you resume from Hibernation, your work returns to the screen where you left off.
HP recommends that you save your work before initiating Hibernation whenever:
You plan to dock, undock, or connect an external device to
the tablet PC while it is in Hibernation.
You may need to resume from Hibernation from a nearly
discharged battery pack.
Power
If a power-on password is set, the password must be entered to
resume from Hibernation.

Hibernation is enabled by default, but can be disabled (usually, to save space on the hard drive).
CAUTION: Disabling Hibernation is not recommended. When
Ä
Hibernation is disabled, system-initiated Hibernation cannot save your work if the tablet PC reaches a critical low-battery condition while it is on or in Standby.
To verify that Hibernation is enabled:
» Select Start > Control Panel > Performance and Maintenance
icon > Power Options icon > Hibernate tab.
If Hibernation is enabled, the Enable Hibernation check box is selected.

Choosing Standby, Hibernation or Shutdown

When You Leave Your Work

If you plan to resume shortly: Initiating Standby clears the screen, uses less power than leaving the tablet PC on, and your work returns quickly to the screen when you resume from Standby. A battery pack that has been frequently charged and discharged will support Standby for less time.
If you plan to resume within 2 weeks: Initiating Hibernation clears the screen, saves your work to the hard drive, and uses much less power than Standby. Returning to work saved in Hibernation takes longer than returning to work saved in Standby, but is faster than returning to your place manually after restarting the tablet PC.
If the tablet PC will be disconnected from external power for more than one month: Shutting down the tablet PC and removing
the battery pack extends the useful life of the battery pack. Store the battery pack in a cool, dry place. For more battery pack storage information, refer on this CD to the Hardware Guide, “Battery Packs” chapter, “Storing a Battery Pack.”

When the Power Supply Is Uncertain

CAUTION: If power is interrupted while the tablet PC is in Standby,
Ä
your unsaved work is saved for up to one minute. Any data not saved during this time will be lost. If power is interrupted while the tablet PC is in Hibernation, your unsaved work is protected.
Power may be interrupted if the tablet PC is running on external power from an unreliable power source, on battery power from a failing battery pack, or during battery pack replacement.
If you pause your work when the power supply is uncertain, HP
recommends that you initiate Hibernation or shut down the tablet PC.

While Using Drive Media

Initiating Standby or Hibernation while playing audio or video
drive media may stop the play or diminish the quality of the play.
Power
If Standby or Hibernation is accidentally initiated while a medium is in use, slide and release the power switch to resume from Standby or Hibernation, then restart the tablet PC.

Using the Default Power Procedures

The following table describes the default procedures for turning on or shutting down the tablet PC and for initiating or resuming from Standby or Hibernation.
For information about changing the function of the power switch, see “Setting Power Preferences” later in this chapter. For information about initiating Standby or Hibernation or shutting down the tablet PC from the Q Menu, see Chapter 2, “Q Menu
and Desktop Video Profiles.”

Using Emergency Shutdown Procedures

Try one of the following procedures if the tablet PC is unresponsive and you are unable to turn it off using the Q Menu or standard Windows shutdown procedures:
If Windows is open:
1. Enter the ctrl+alt+del command by pressing the
ctrl+alt+del keys on an optional keyboard or the
Windows Security button on the tablet PC. You can
press the Windows Security button with the tip of the
tablet PC pen or with a small object like the end of a
paper clip.
2. Select Shut Down > Turn Off.
If the Setup utility is open, press the Windows Security
button. (The tablet PC restarts.)
If you are unable to shut down the tablet PC by using the
Windows Security button or the power switch for 4 seconds.
If you are unable to shut down the tablet PC with the power
switch, remove the battery pack and disconnect the tablet PC from external power.

Using the Power Meter Icon

When the Power Meter icon is displayed in the system tray, the icon changes shape to indicate whether the tablet PC is running on battery power or external power.
To show or hide the Power Meter icon:
1. Select Start > Control Panel > Performance and
Maintenance icon > Power Options icon > Advanced tab.
2. Select or clear the Always Show Icon On The Taskbar
check box.
3. Select the OK button.
4. If the icon is not displayed, select the system tray icon for
Show Hidden Icons.
To change the current power scheme, select the icon, then
select a power scheme. For more information about using power schemes, refer to the section later in the chapter,
“Selecting, Creating or Changing a Power Scheme.”
To display battery charge information, select the icon. For
more information about displaying battery charge information, refer on this CD to the Hardware Guide, “Battery Packs” chapter.
To display the Power Options Properties window, right-click
the icon, then select Adjust Power Properties.

Setting Power Preferences

Changing the Power Switch Function

By default, sliding and releasing the power switch while the tablet PC is on initiates Standby.
To change the function of the power switch:
1. Select Start > Control Panel > Performance and
Maintenance icon > Power Options icon > Advanced tab.
2. From the list for When I Press The Power Button On
My Computer, select a power switch function.
3. Select the OK button.
The Hibernate function is available only if Hibernation is
enabled. To verify that Hibernation is enabled, refer to the instructions in the “Hibernation” section earlier in this chapter.

Setting a Standby Password

To set the tablet PC to prompt for a password when exiting Standby:
1. Select Start > Control Panel > Performance and Maintenance icon > Power Options icon > Advanced tab.
2. Select the check box for Prompt for Password When Computer Resumes From Standby.
3. Select the OK button.
At the password prompt that is displayed when resuming from Standby, enter a password that was set in the operating system, not a password that was set in the Setup utility. Passwords set in the operating system and passwords set in the Setup utility can be the same. For more information about using passwords, see Chapter 4, “Passwords.”

Selecting, Creating or Changing a Power Scheme

A Windows power scheme assigns power levels to system components. For example, you can use a power scheme that turns off the display after a specified time interval.
Selecting a Preset Power Scheme
To change the current power scheme to a default or previously set power scheme, use either of the following procedures:
Select the Power Meter icon in the taskbar, then select any
displayed power scheme.
Select Start > Control Panel > Performance and Maintenance
icon > Power Options icon > Power Schemes tab, select the power scheme from the power schemes list, select Apply, then select OK.
Creating or Changing a Power Scheme
To set or change a power scheme:
1. Select Start > Control Panel > Performance and Maintenance icon > Power Options icon > Power Schemes tab. Then:
To set a new power scheme, select the Save As button,
type a name for the new scheme in the field for Save This Power Scheme As, then select the OK button. (The new scheme is displayed in the Power Schemes field on the Power Schemes tab.) You can now select settings for the new power scheme from the Settings lists.
To change the settings in an existing power scheme,
select the Power Scheme from the Power Schemes list, then select settings from the Settings lists.
2. Select the OK button.

Q Menu

The Q Menu provides quick access to many of the system tasks accessed with the buttons, keys, or hot keys found on most notebook computers.
You can program the Q Menu to access alternative system tasks or to any item on a drive, a network, or the Internet.

Identifying Q Menu Controls

The Q menu button 1 and the jog dial 2 are used in Q Menu procedures.

Displaying and Closing the Q Menu

The Q Menu can be displayed or closed at any time by using any of the following procedures:
To display the Q Menu, press the Q menu button or select the
Q icon in the system tray.
If the Q icon is not displayed in the system tray:
1. Press the Q menu button.
2. Select the Q Menu Settings item.
3. Select the Display Q Menu Icon On System Tray
check box.
4. Select OK.
If the icon is not displayed, select the system tray icon for Show Hidden Icons.
To close the Q Menu, press the Q menu button or click
anywhere outside of the Q Menu.
For information about setting a pen-activated button to open and close the Q Menu, refer on this CD to the Hardware Guide, “Pen, Command Controls and Keyboards” chapter, “Command Controls” section.

Selecting an Item from the Q Menu

The items on the Q Menu can be selected with the jog dial, the pen, an external mouse, or the pointing device on an optional tablet PC keyboard.
To select an item with the jog dial, rotate the jog dial upward or downward to scroll vertically through the items, then press the jog dial inward to select an item.

Obtaining Information About System-Defined Items

To display a description of a system-defined Q Menu item or to test any Q Menu item by executing the item command:
1. Press the Q menu button or select the Q icon in the system tray.
2. Select the Q Menu Settings item.
3. On the Items to Display On Q Menu list:
To display a description of a system-defined item,
select the item. (A description is displayed in a panel beneath the list.) User-defined items are not described.
To test any item by executing the item command,
select the item, then select the Execute button.
Procedures for using all system-defined items are provided in the
“Using a System-Defined Item” section, later in this chapter.

Setting Q Menu Preferences

The Q Menu can display up to 40 items. Several system-defined items are displayed by default. Additional system-defined and user-defined items can be added. All items, including the default items, can be removed.
The items on the Q Menu are managed from the Items to Display On Q Menu list.
Accessing the Items to Display on Q Menu List
The Items to Display on Q Menu list can be accessed at any time by using either of the following procedures:
Press the Q menu button or select the Q icon in the system
tray, then select the Q Menu Settings item.
Select Start > Control Panel > Other Control Panel Options
(found on the left side of the Control Panel window) > Q Menu Settings.

Removing a Q Menu Item
To remove an item from the Q Menu:
1. Press the Q menu button or select the Q icon in the system tray.
2. Select the Q Menu Settings item.
3. On the Items to Display On Q Menu list, clear the check box for the item you want to remove.
4. Select Apply > OK. (The item is removed from the Q Menu.)
Adding a Q Menu Item
An item must be displayed on the Items to Display On Q Menu list before it can be added to the Q Menu.
The Q Menu and the Items to Display on Q Menu list can include no more than 40 items. If the list currently contains 40 items, the Add button is dimmed and unavailable. If the Add button is unavailable, you must remove a listed item before you can add the new item.
Adding a Listed Item to the Q Menu
To add an item from the Items to Display On Q Menu list to the Q Menu:
1. Press the Q menu button or select the Q icon in the system tray.
2. Select the Q Menu Settings item.
3. Select the check box for the item you want to add.
4. Select the OK button. (The item is added to the Q Menu.)
To display the Q Menu after adding the item, press the Q menu button or select the Q icon in the system tray.

Adding an Unlisted Item to the Q Menu
To add an item that is not on the Items to Display on Q Menu list—for example, an item on a drive, network, or the Internet—to both the Items to Display on Q Menu list and to the Q Menu:
1. Press the Q menu button or select the Q icon in the system tray.
2. Select the Q Menu Settings item.
3. Select the Add button. (The Add New Menu Entry window is displayed.)
4. In the Add New Menu Entry window, you can add the item by typing or by browsing:
To add the item using an external keyboard, type a name
for the item in the Display Name field and type the path to the item in the File Name field. If you prefer to type the Display Name, but browse for the File Name, leave the File Name field blank.
To add an item by browsing, select the Browse button
beside the File Name field. (A window displays the contents of the system hard drive.)
In the window, select the item. (The full name of the item is displayed in the File Name field and, if you did not type a name earlier in the Display Name field, a Display Name is generated from the item name and displayed in the Display Name field.)
5. To confirm your preference(s), select Apply > OK. (The new item is added to the Items to Display on Q Menu list and to the Q Menu.)

Changing a User-Defined Item
User-defined items can be changed, but system-defined items cannot be changed. If you select a system-defined item on the Items To Display on Q Menu list, the Modify button is unavailable.
To change the Display Name and/or File Name of a user-defined item:
1. Press the Q menu button or select the Q icon in the system tray.
2. Select the Q Menu Settings item.
3. Select the item on the Items To Display On Q Menu list.
4. Select the Modify button. (The Modify New Entry window is displayed.)
To change the Display Name or File Name of the item
using an external keyboard, type the new name for the item in the Display Name field or type the new path to the item in the File Name field. If you prefer to type the Display Name, but browse for the File Name, leave the File Name field blank.
To change the Display Name or File Name by browsing,
select the Browse button beside the File Name field. (A window displays the contents of the system hard drive.)
In the window, select the item. (The full name of the item is displayed in the File Name field and, if you did not type a name earlier in the Display Name field, a Display Name is generated from the item name and displayed in the Display Name field.)
5. To confirm your preference(s), select Apply > OK. (The Display Name and/or File Name are changed on the Items to Display on Q Menu list and on the Q Menu.)
6. To close the Q Menu window, select OK.
To display the Q Menu after changing a Display and/or File Name, press the Q menu button or select the Q icon in the system tray.

Repositioning a Q Menu Item
To change the location of an item on the Q Menu:
1. Press the Q menu button or select the Q icon in the system tray.
2. Select the Q Menu Settings item.
3. Select the item on the Items to Display On Q Menu list, then:
To move the item upward, select the Move Up button.
To move the item downward, select the Move Down
button.
4. To confirm your preference(s) and close the Q Menu window, select Apply > OK.
Removing an Item from the Items to Display on Q Menu List
System-defined items cannot be removed from the Items to Display on Q Menu List. To remove a user-defined item:
1. Press the Q menu button or select the Q icon in the system tray.
2. Select the Q Menu Settings item.
3. Select the item you want to remove.
4. Select the Remove button. (The item is removed from the Items to Display on Q Menu List.)
5. To confirm your preference(s) and close the Q Menu window, select Apply > OK.

Using a System-Defined Item

As shipped, the Q Menu displays only the items identified below as default. All the items described below can be added or removed from the Q Menu. For instructions, see “Setting Q Menu

Wireless On/Off (Default)
Select the Wireless On/Off item to turn internal wireless device(s) on when they are off or off when they are on. The wireless device activity light indicates the status of the internal wireless device.
Identifying the wireless device activity light
When the wireless device activity light is:
Off: The internal wireless device is disabled or turned off.
On: The internal wireless device is enabled.
The wireless device activity light supports only an internal wireless device miniPCI board and/or Bluetooth device, not a wireless LAN SD (Secure Digital) or PC Card.
To turn on the wireless device(s):
» Select the Wireless On item.
To turn off the wireless device(s):
» Select the Wireless Off item.
If there is more than one wireless device installed, the Wireless On/Off button will affect both devices at the same time.

Select the Brightness item to display a pop-up window that enables you to adjust screen brightness with the jog dial. After selecting your preferences, select the OK button in the pop-up window.

Select the Volume item to display the operating system volume control window.

If system volume is on, select the Mute On/Off item to mute system volume. If system volume is muted, select the Mute On/Off item to restore system volume.

Select the Capture Screen item to copy the image currently displayed on the tablet PC screen to the Windows clipboard.
To save or print the image, open an application which supports a screen image, such as Microsoft Word or Microsoft Paint, then paste the image.

1. Select the Capture Screen item.

Select the Capture Window item to copy the image of the currently active window on the tablet PC screen to the Windows clipboard.

When an optional display device, such as an external monitor or projector, is connected to the external monitor connector on the tablet PC:
To display the image on the tablet PC screen and the external display device at the same time:

Selecting the Internal and External item turns off the Extended
Desktop option.
Extended Desktop
The Extended Desktop option extends the display from the tablet PC screen onto the external monitor screen. For example, you could use the Extended Desktop item to display an entire spreadsheet. The left side columns could be displayed on the tablet PC screen and the right side columns could be displayed on the external monitor.
To turn on the Extended Desktop option, when an optional external monitor is connected to the external monitor connector on the tablet PC:
» Select the Extended Desktop item.
To turn off the Extended Desktop option:
1. Press the Q button.
2. Select the Internal Only, External Only, or Internal and External item.

Presentation Mode On/Off (Default)
Presentation mode is a desktop profile that provides the optimal configuration for displaying a presentation, such as a Microsoft PowerPoint presentation, on a projector or external monitor while displaying speaker’s notes on the tablet PC.
If you cause the system to initiate a desktop video profile while presentation mode is applied—for example, by docking or undocking—you must reapply presentation mode.
To apply or reapply presentation mode:
» Select the Presentation Mode On item
To close presentation mode and return the system to the previous desktop video profile:

HP recommends that you not use the Landscape-Secondary view

Desktop Video Profiles

The tablet PC desktop video profiles enable you to optimize your work environment for your preferred work style. The NVIDIA nView Desktop Manager Utility automatically changes the video profile (settings) of the tablet PC when you dock and undock it in the optional Docking Station.
In addition, the desktop video profiles control the assignment of keystrokes to a selection of system tasks. Keystrokes that are assigned to system tasks are called hot keys.
Only the default undocked profile is enabled by default. The other
profiles must be enabled manually through the NVIDIA nView Desktop Manager utility. It is recommended that you enable the profiles when you add a Tablet PC Docking Station, full-sized monitor, and external keyboard and mouse to the system.

Identifying Profiles and Modes

In the NVIDIA nView Desktop Manager utility, image display information is contained in profiles. Profiles contain the software configuration information that can be applied by the system when a desktop video mode is initiated.
Desktop video modes and profiles are not affected by an external keyboard.
The NVIDIA nView Desktop Manager Utility supports 4 default profiles and up to 3 custom profiles.

Using the Default Profiles

Undocked Profile
The system initiates an undocked profile when the tablet PC:
Is started up while undocked.
Is undocked from the Docking Station.
Is slid from writing mode to viewing mode while docked.
When the default undocked profile is initiated because the tablet PC is starting up while undocked, the image on the tablet PC screen retains the same orientation (landscape or portrait) that was in effect when the tablet PC was shut down.
When the default undocked profile is initiated because the tablet PC was undocked, the image on the tablet PC screen retains the orientation that was in effect while the tablet PC was docked.
Whenever the default undocked profile is initiated, all open application windows on an optional external monitor are displayed on the tablet PC screen. (If the tablet PC is docked while in the default undocked profile, most open application windows are moved to the external monitor screen.)
Docked in Viewing Mode Profile
The system initiates a docked profile when the tablet PC:
Is started up while it is docked in viewing mode.
Is docked while in viewing mode.
When the default viewing mode profile is initiated:

Enabling the Default Profiles

Only the default undocked profile is enabled by default. The other profiles must be enabled manually through the NVIDIA nView Desktop Manager Utility.
To enable the default profiles:
1. Select Start > Control Panel > NVIDIA nView Desktop Manager > Profiles tab.
Alternatively, you can right-click on the desktop, then
select nView Properties > nView Desktop Manager icon > Profiles tab.
2. In the upper portion of the Profiles tab, select the check boxes for the profiles you want to activate.
3. Select the OK button.
4. Test the default profile:
a. Undock the tablet PC.
b. Dock the tablet PC.
It is normal for the screen to flicker or darken momentarily or
for the orientation to change unexpectedly until a profile is completely activated.
When you dock the tablet PC, the default docked profile is activated:
The image on the external monitor is displayed in
landscape view.
The image on the external monitor is an extension of the
Windows desktop from the tablet PC.
The taskbar is displayed on the external monitor.
Application windows may be dragged from one monitor
to another.
Experiment with the default profiles to determine whether they are suitable for your work style.

Customizing the Profiles (Optional)

The nView Desktop Manager utility enables you to create one custom docked profile, one custom undocked profile, and one custom writing profile. Ensure that the nView Desktop Manager utility and the Save Profile window remain open until you have changed all of the settings you want to customize.
You must save the settings from one profile before you begin to
customize another.
Identifying the Profile
1. Select Start > Control Panel > NVIDIA nView Desktop Manager icon > Profiles tab.
Alternatively, you can right-click on the desktop, then
select nView Properties > nView Desktop Manager icon > Profiles tab.
2. In the lower portion of the Profiles tab, select the type of profile you want to customize. (The Save Profile window opens, and the Windows and Hot Keys tabs are added to the nView Desktop Manager.)
3. Move the Save Profile window to the side to access the nView Desktop Manager options.
Changing the Windows Control Definitions
1. Select the Windows tab.
2. Change the options as desired.
3. Select the Apply button.
Changing the Hot Key Definitions
1. Select the Hot Keys tab in the nView Desktop Manager utility.
2. Select the system task you want to add.

You can assign different Hot Keys for each profile.
Changing the Video Settings
To change the video settings, have the nView Desktop Manager utility open. Select Start > Control Panel > Appearance and Themes icon > Display icon > Settings tab. In the Control Panel, you can adjust a variety of aspects, including:
Video resolution and color depth
Extended desktop to a second monitor
Video resolution and color depth of a second monitor
Position of the external monitor (monitor 2) relative
to the internal monitor (monitor 1)
External monitor only or internal monitor only. (These
2 options are also available through the Q Menu.)
Defining Applications to Launch
Each profile can launch a number of applications. While editing your profile, launch the applications you want your profile to open automatically. If you do not want applications to open automatically when a profile is activated, close all applications before saving the custom profile.
It may be convenient to save Microsoft Journal in the personal
writing profile.

Saving the Profile
After changing the nView Desktop Manager utility settings, changing the video settings, and defining the application to launch, save the custom profile:
1. In the Save Profile window, select the Save button.
2. Select the OK button in the utility window.

Change Mode Service

Tablet PC Button Driver

The tablet PC button driver allows you to customize the buttons on the sides of the tablet PC. You can program the buttons to perform various functions or open specific programs. Each button can be programmed to perform a different function for each orientation, or to perform the same function for all orientations.
To customize a tablet PC button:
1. Select Start > Control Panel > Printers and other Hardware > Tablet and Pen Settings.
2. Select the Tablet Buttons tab.
3. Select the orientation for which you want to program the button.
4. Select the button you want to program in the Tablet Button column. The button is displayed in the Button location and Detailed view areas of the Tablet Buttons tab.
5. To change the action associated with the button, select Change. The Change Tablet Button Actions dialog box is displayed.
6. In the Action drop-down box, select the action that you want the button to perform.
7. Select OK.
8. Select Apply > OK on the Tablet and Pen settings dialog box.

Preparing for a Software Update

If your tablet PC connects to a network, HP recommends that you consult with your network administrator before installing any software updates, particularly system ROM or KBC (keyboard controller) ROM updates.

Accessing Tablet PC Model Information

To access the updates for your tablet PC, you may need to know the following information about your tablet PC:
The product category is tablet PC.
The product family name and series number are printed on
the side of the tablet PC.
Complete model information is provided on the product
identification label on the back of the tablet PC.
The tablet PC product name, model, serial number, and other identification information are also available on the Main tab of the Setup utility. For access instructions, see “Displaying ROM
Information in the Setup Utility,” later in this section.

Accessing ROM Version Information

To determine whether available ROM updates contain later ROM versions than those currently installed on the tablet PC, you need to know the version of the system ROM or KBC ROM currently installed.
System ROM stores the BIOS (basic input output system). The
BIOS determines how the tablet PC hardware interacts with the operating system and external devices, and also supports such tablet PC services as time and date. KBC ROM stores the parts of the BIOS that support input features such as the pen, some buttons, and an external keyboard.

Displaying ROM Information in the Setup Utility
The Setup utility is a non-Windows utility and does not support the use of the pen, the on-screen keyboard, or the pointing device on an optional tablet PC keyboard. Most software at the HP Web site is packaged in a compressed file called a SoftPaq. Some ROM updates may be packaged in a compressed file called a RomPaq. Other ROM updates may be provided as an HPQFlash SoftPaq.
Most download packages contain a file named Readme.txt. A Readme.txt file contains detailed descriptive, installation, and troubleshooting information about the download. The Readme.txt files included with RomPaqs are English only.

To update KBC (keyboard controller) ROM from the Internet, you must download the update to a diskette, then install the update from the diskette. An optional Docking Station or External MultiBay must be in the system before you can update the KBC ROM from the Internet.

7. Select the file that includes an .exe extension, for example, Filename.exe. (The installation begins.)

Installing an Alternative Operating System

The Microsoft Windows XP Tablet PC Edition operating system provided on the tablet PC is enhanced by HP. The HP enhancements include support for tablet PC buttons and quick access to system functions provided by the Q Menu.

Using a Multilingual User Interface (MUI) Operating System

The Windows XP Multilingual User Interface (MUI) is an add-on to the English version of the Windows XP Tablet Edition. It allows users or administrators to switch the operating system user interface (menus, dialogs, and so on) from one language to another, or to vary the language interface for each user. This feature simplifies administration and support in multilingual computing environments.

Enabling and Switching MUI Languages

To switch between installed languages on the MUI:
1. Select Start > Control Panel > Date, Time, Language, and Regional Options.
2. Select Regional and Language Options.
3. Select the Language tab.
4. Select the language from the Language Used in Menus and Dialogs drop-down menu at the bottom of the dialog box.
5. Select the Advanced tab. In the Language for non-Unicode programs section, change the language selection to match the MUI language.

Switching the Language on the Tablet Input Panel

The writing pad in Tablet PC Input Panel converts your handwriting into typed text and inserts it in a software application that you specify, such as a word processing document. Depending upon which language version is currently active on the tablet, you will see different options on the tabs at the bottom of the Tablet Input Panel.

HP passwords (power-on, supervisor, and DriveLock) do not display as they are set, changed, deleted, or entered.
CAUTION: The Microsoft Tablet PC Input Panel (TIP) application

displays a keyboard on the screen and can also display a writing pad that supports handwriting. Although the TIP application allows you to enter Korean, Chinese, or Japanese characters when creating passwords, HP strongly advises that you use only the keyboard letters and numbers to create your personal password (for example, MyTabletPC1). Creating a password using Korean, Chinese, or Japanese characters will prevent you from logging on to your tablet PC.

Setting Preferences in the Setup Utility

Passwords are set, changed, and deleted in the Setup utility. Because the Setup utility is a non-Windows utility:
The pen cannot be used.
The jog dial on the tablet PC or the enter and arrow keys on
an external keyboard are used to select and navigate.
Preferences that require typing, such as setting or changing
a password, can be entered only from an external keyboard.
If you are unfamiliar with non-Windows utilities, HP recommends that you read the “Using the Setup Utility” section in the “Setup and Support Utilities” chapter of this guide before using the utility to set a password preference.

Forgetting Passwords

Whenever you set or change a password, write down the password and store it in a safe location away from the tablet PC.
If you forget your power-on password, you cannot start up the
tablet PC or resume from Hibernation unless you can use a supervisor password or until an HP-authorized service provider resets the tablet PC.
If you forget your supervisor password, you cannot open the
Setup utility until an HP-authorized service provider resets the tablet PC.
If you forget your DriveLock password, the hard drive is
permanently unusable.

Combining HP and Windows Passwords

An HP password is a password set in the Setup utility. A Windows password is a password set in the operating system.
HP passwords and Windows passwords work independently. You must enter an HP password at an HP password prompt and a Windows password at a Windows password prompt. For example:
If a power-on password is set, the power-on password (not a
Windows password) must be entered when the tablet PC starts up or resumes from Hibernation.
If you set Windows to prompt for a password before exiting
Standby, a Windows password (not a power-on password) must be entered to resume from Standby.
A supervisor password set in the Setup utility and a Windows
administrator password set in Windows are not interchangeable.
Any number combination used for an HP password can also be used for other HP passwords or as a Windows password, with these considerations:
All HP passwords must be a combination of up to
32 numbers.
When the tablet PC is starting up from a hard drive protected
with DriveLock, you will not be prompted for a power-on password if you enter a DriveLock password that is the same as the power-on password.
If both a power-on password and a supervisor password are
set, the supervisor password can be used at the power-on password prompt.

Determining Password Status

You can use the Setup utility to determine whether a power-on, supervisor, or DriveLock password is set.
If a prompt for a supervisor password is displayed as you attempt to enter the Setup utility, the prompt itself confirms that a supervisor password is set.
The status of all HP passwords is displayed in the Setup utility.

If you use the same number combination for both a power-on password and a DriveLock password, you are prompted for the DriveLock password, but not the power-on password, when the tablet PC starts up.

At the power-on password prompt, a pen-activated on-screen keypad is displayed. To enter your power-on or supervisor password, use either of the following methods:
Tap your password onto the on-screen keypad with the
pen tip, then select Enter on the on-screen keypad.
Type your password on an optional keyboard, then press enter.
After 3 unsuccessful attempts to enter a password, you must turn off the tablet PC by sliding and holding the power switch for 4 seconds, then turn on the tablet PC to try again. Restarting the tablet PC (using the Windows Security key) will not set the system to accept a fourth attempt.

Using DriveLock

CAUTION: If you forget your DriveLock user password, the protected

hard drive is permanently unusable.
DriveLock prevents unauthorized access to the contents of the hard drive. Once DriveLock protection is applied to the drive, a password must be entered to access the drive.
If you enter a DriveLock password that is the same as the power-on password, you will not be prompted to enter the power-on password.

Protecting a Hard Drive with DriveLock

To access the DriveLock settings in the Setup utility, you must shut down, then turn on the tablet PC to access the Setup utility. If you open the Setup utility from a Windows restart, DriveLock settings are not accessible.
To set a DriveLock password, an external keyboard must be in the system. The keyboard may be a tablet PC keyboard or a standard keyboard connected by USB to the tablet PC.
1. To verify that the tablet PC is off and not in Hibernation, slide and release the power switch. If your work returns to the screen, close all open files and applications, then shut down the tablet PC.

Changing or Clearing a DriveLock Password

To access the DriveLock settings in the Setup utility, you must shut down, then turn on the tablet PC to access the Setup utility. If you open the Setup utility from a Windows restart, DriveLock settings are not accessible.
1. To verify that the tablet PC is off and not in Hibernation, slide and release the power switch. If your work returns to the screen, shut down the tablet PC.

Using CDs and DVDs

Before using any optical drive software, HP recommends that you read the following general information about using CDs and DVDs.

Finding Insertion and Removal Instructions

You can play CDs or DVDs with an optical drive inserted in the MultiBay of an optional Docking Station or in an External MultiBay.
For drive insertion instructions, refer to the documentation
included with an optional External MultiBay or Docking Station.
For CD insertion and removal instructions, refer on this CD
to the Hardware Guide, “Drives” chapter.

Avoiding Standby and Hibernation

Initiating Standby or Hibernation while playing audio or video
drive media may stop the play or diminish the quality of the play.
If Standby or Hibernation is accidentally initiated while a medium is in use, slide and release the power switch to resume from Standby or Hibernation, then restart the tablet PC.

Displaying Media Contents

When you insert a diskette, CD, or DVD into the system, the tablet PC can play the medium, display its contents, take no action, or display a response prompt on the screen.
You can set the responses of the tablet PC to the insertion of various types of media by using the operating system AutoPlay feature.
Setting AutoPlay Preferences
To set AutoPlay preferences:
1. Select Start > My Computer.
2. Right-click a drive.
3. Select Properties > AutoPlay tab, then follow the instructions on the screen.
4. To save your settings, select the OK button.
Displaying Media Contents Without Using AutoPlay
To display the contents of a drive medium when the contents are not displayed by AutoPlay:
1. Insert the medium into the drive.
2. Select Start > Run, then type:
explorer x:
(where X = the drive designation of the drive containing the medium)
3. Select the OK button.
A drive designation is a letter of the alphabet that the tablet PC
uses to identify the drive. To display the drive designation of every drive in the system, select Start > My Computer.

Playing an Audio CD

To play an audio CD:
1. Read the “Using CDs and DVDs” section at the beginning of this chapter.
2. If an optical drive is not in the system, insert an optical drive into an optional External MultiBay or into the MultiBay of an optional Docking Station.
3. Insert the audio CD into the drive, then close the tray. Wait several seconds. Then:

If Windows Media Player does not open, proceed to

4. Select Start > All Programs > Accessories > Entertainment > Windows Media Player.
5. Select the Play button to play the CD and the Stop button to stop the CD.

9. To stop playing the CD, select the Stop button.

Accessing Windows Media Player Help

The Windows Media Player application is an operating system feature. Instructions for using Windows Media Player are included in the Windows Media Player Help file.
To access the Help file, open the Windows Media Player application, then select Help on the menu bar.
To open Windows Media Player, use any one of the following methods:
Insert a CD into an optical drive, then close the tray.
Select the Windows Media Player icon in the system tray.
If the icon is not displayed, select the icon in the system tray for Show Hidden Icons.
Select Start > All Programs > Accessories > Entertainment >
Windows Media Player.

Playing DVDs with WinDVD

InterVideo WinDVD is an application that enables you to play DVD movies. WinDVD is preloaded on the tablet PC, but not preinstalled.

Installing WinDVD

Although WinDVD can be installed by following the prompts that appear on the screen the first time you insert a DVD, HP recommends that you install WinDVD before inserting a DVD.
Some DVDs contain third-party DVD player programs such as
PC Friendly. If you insert a DVD that contains a third-party player program before you have installed WinDVD, you are prompted to install that third-party player program and not WinDVD. If you prefer to install WinDVD, decline the third-party player installation, usually by pressing a No, Cancel, or Exit button, then close the installation window.
To install WinDVD:

Accessing WinDVD Help

Instructions for using WinDVD are included in the WinDVD Help file. To access the Help file:

Starting a DVD

In addition to the instructions in the WinDVD Player Help file, the following information may be helpful:
General information about using DVDs, including important
information about avoiding Standby and Hibernation while playing DVDs, is in “Using CDs and DVDs” at the beginning of this chapter.
If your system includes an optional Docking Station, dock or
undock the tablet PC before starting a DVD (not while playing a DVD).
For best playback quality, save your files and close all open
applications before playing a DVD.
For best performance, view the DVD in landscape view.
After you insert a DVD, a short pause is normal before
AutoPlay opens the DVD and WinDVD Player.
If the DVD displays a Playback Of Content From This
Region Is Not Permitted error message, stop the DVD, change the regional setting as described in the following section, then restart the DVD.

Using DVD Regional Settings

Most DVDs that contain copyrighted files also contain regional codes. The regional codes help protect copyrights internationally.
You can play a DVD containing a regional code only if the regional code on the DVD matches the regional setting on your optical drive.
If the regional code on a DVD does not match the regional setting on your drive, a Playback Of Content From This Region Is Not Permitted message is displayed when you insert the DVD. To play the DVD, you must change the regional setting on your optical drive.
CAUTION: The regional setting on your DVD drive can be changed

only 5 times.
The regional setting you select the fifth time becomes the permanent
regional setting on the drive.
The number of allowable regional changes remaining on the drive
is displayed in the Remaining Times Until Permanent field in the WinDVD window. The number in the field includes the fifth and permanent change.

To change the regional setting on a drive:
1. Insert the DVD you want to play into an optical drive inserted into an optional Docking Station or External MultiBay.
2. If the WinDVD window does not open after a short pause, select Start > All Programs > InterVideo WinDVD > WinDVD.
3. Select the Properties icon in the lower-left corner of the window.
4. Select the General tab.
5. Select a region.

Boot Order

The Setup utility allows you to set the tablet PC to start up from most bootable devices. A bootable device contains files needed by the tablet PC to start up and operate properly.
The bootable device may be a hard drive, an internal Network Interface Card (NIC), or a bootable drive medium. The bootable drive medium may be a diskette or an optical drive disc.
The tablet PC cannot start up from a NIC until the NIC has been enabled for startup.

Understanding the Search Sequence

When more than one bootable device is in the system, the tablet PC selects the startup device by searching sequenced locations in the following order:
1. Bootable optical disc
2. Bootable diskette
3. Bootable hard drive
4. Bootable NIC

The MultiBay in an External MultiBay that is connected to a Docking Station cannot be included in a boot order search sequence.
You can change the sequence of the locations that the tablet PC searches for a startup device by setting a boot order preference in the Setup utility.

To set a boot order preference or start up from a NIC, you may use the tab button 1, the esc button 2, and the jog dial 3.

After you set a boot order preference:
The tablet PC uses your boot order preference each time it is
started or restarted.
The logical drive designations used by the system change.
For example, if you set the tablet PC to start up from a removable hard drive in the External MultiBay, that hard drive becomes drive C and the system hard drive in the hard drive bay becomes drive D. Starting up from a NIC does not affect logical drive designations.
Boot order preferences are set in the Setup utility:

Starting Up from a NIC

When an internal NIC is enabled for startup:
The NIC can be included in a boot order preference.
A Network Service Boot prompt is displayed very briefly in
the lower-right corner of the screen each time the tablet PC is started or restarted.
You can connect to a PXE (Preboot eXecution Environment) or RPL (Remote Program Load) server during startup by responding to the Network Service Boot prompt.
To respond to a Network Service Boot prompt, use either of the following methods:

The Setup utility is a preinstalled, ROM-based utility, which can be used even when the operating system is not working or will not load. If the operating system is working, the tablet PC will restart the operating system after you exit the Setup utility.
Because the Setup utility is not Windows-based, it does not support the pen, the on-screen keyboard, or the pointing device on a tablet PC keyboard.

Backing Up and Restoring Data

The System Restore utility enables you to safeguard your system files and functional configurations by using System Restore points.
System Restore points are restorable, benchmark snapshots of your system. The tablet PC may set System Restore points whenever you change personal settings or add software or hardware. Setting System Restore points manually provides additional protection for your system files and settings.
HP recommends that you set System Restore points:
Before you add or extensively modify software or hardware.
Periodically, whenever the system is performing optimally.

To set a System Restore point manually:
