Some HP DeskJet 540 printers contain flash memory. Flash memory provides the capability to install fonts and symbol sets for specific regions. The following figure shows how to identify printers with flash memory by observing the serial number label on the back of the printer.

To identify a printer with flash memory, look for the lightning bolt symbol on the serial number label located on the back of the printer. The flash font code found directly below the lightning bolt can be used to identify the language of fonts downloaded into flash memory. The optional Color Kit which includes a color print cartridge and a print cartridge storage container, provides color output printing capability from an HP DeskJet 540 printer. The printer comes from the factory as color capable, it does not require any modifications. Color features, however, need to be turned on in the printer driver dialog box in MS Windows. For more information, refer to the HP DeskJet 540 printer user’s documentation, or to “Printer Driver Information/MS Windows.”

Notes

The print cartridge storage container will hold one black or one color print cartridge. To obtain maximum print quality and print cartridge life, always store the open print cartridge that is not in the printer in the print cartridge storage container.

When printing a color page with the color print cartridge, you cannot print true black. The printer will print composite black, made up of cyan, magenta, and yellow inks.

Configuring the Printer

The HP DeskJet 540 printer does not have any DIP switches. All printer configuration is accomplished using the printer driver for MS Windows or the HP DeskJet 540 Control Panel for DOS. Refer to “Printer Driver Information” to learn more about printer settings in DOS and MS Windows.

Installing the DOS Printer Software

1. Close any screen saver or other software programs that are open and running in the background.

2. Insert Installation Disk #1 into the computer’s floppy disk drive.

3. Click File in the menu bar off the Program Manager window.

4. Choose Run in the File menu. The Run dialog box appears.

5. In the Command Line box, type your computer’s floppy disk drive designator followed by HPSETUP. (For example, A:\HPSETUP).

6. Click OK.

7. Follow the instructions on the screen.
