MX8 EOL – Guide to alternative devices
In July 2013 we announced the discontinuation plan for the MX8 with
Microsoft Windows CE 5.0 or the Windows Mobile 6.1. The MX8
has filled an important position in the Honeywell product portfolio,
meeting the needs of light industrial supply chain segments. However,
important technological advances have been made since the MX8
introduction which has led to supply limitations. This sales document
serves as a guide to identify a suitable device in the Honeywell
portfolio to replace the various MX8 configurations.
The MX8 Windows Mobile 6.1 SKUs with the Standard Range
or Base Laser were discontinued immediately. The structure of
these immediately discontinued SKUs is MX8A2xxxxxKxxxx and
MX8A5xxxxxKxxxx. The recommended replacement SKUs for those
configurations is listed on page 6 of this document.

From Table 1 & 2 below it is clear that the Tecton is the most suitable replacement and in most cases exceeds the specification of
the MX8.
If the size and weight of the Tecton are an area of concern for your customer then the Dolphin 6100 and 6500 can be offered
as an alternative. Please note that the Dolphin 6100 does not support Voice applications and does not have a scan handle. The
Dolphin 6500 offers 28-key numeric and 52-key alphanumeric keypad options, as well as an optional scan handle. For intensive
scanning applications, we recommend using the Tecton with the optional scan handle.

Application Use Cases
Wi-Fi applications (no need for a scan handle)
The most suitable device in this scenario is the Dolphin 6100 which offers the same form factor as the MX8, with a better size and
weight. It also offers the same OS (Win CE5) enabling a faster application migration.
If the customer requires a larger screen size than the Dolphin 6100, you can propose the Dolphin 6500. The black color of the
device also looks more industrial, similar to the MX8.
Wi-Fi applications (with scan handle)
The Dolphin 6500 fits this type of use case, however its handle is not designed for intensive usage like the MX8 handle. The
most suitable option is the Tecton which – compared to the MX8 – even provides a better display and additional barcode reading
options. Do note that the Tecton comes with a different OS (CE6) in case you need to migrate your application.
Multimodal applications – voice picking
For this particular use case, Tecton is the only alternative solution to the MX8.
