Thank you for purchasing the Haer PH50B™ phono stage,
one of the best sounding and most versatile phono preamps
ever made. The PH50B will boost the signal from your turntable and apply the necessary RIAA curve, allowing you to connect to a HIFI playback system, a pro audio console input
or a recording interface.
Before making any connections, make sure your audio system is turned off. This will help avoid loud turn-on and connection
transients that can damage more sensitive components such
as tweeters.
The Haer PH50B is designed for a turntable that is equipped with a standard moving magnet cartridge, allowing for high quality playback over balanced or unbalanced outputs. If your turntable is equipped with a moving coil cartridge, please consider purchasing the PH60B, which is specically designed for
these types of cartridges.

ABOUT MOVING MAGNET CARTRIDGES
Moving magnet (MM) cartridges
tend to produce a lush, mellow
sound. Most MM cartridges have replaceable styli. Their high voltage
output, variety, and the availability
of stylus replacement make moving magnet cartridges a great choice for the beginner and audiophile alike.
The Haer PH50B is specically designed for moving magnet cartridges. It will boost the signal to produce a -10 dB output while incorporating a well dened RIAA curve preserve and transmit the original program material with minimal coloration.

ABOUT THE RIAA EQUALIZATION CURVE
The Recording Institute Association of America (RIAA) gured out that in order to reproduce the recording effectively, the high frequencies have to be exaggerated. Upon playback, the reverse lter must then be applied – resulting in a at or natural sound.

CONNECT
Turn off your system and connect the output from your turntable to your PH50B. Make sure you use high quality coaxial cables with proper shielding to minimize noise. It is also very important that you ensure the ground connection from the turntable is properly and securely fastened to your
PH50B.
Using the Unbalanced Outputs
If you are connecting to a HIFI receiver use the RCA outputs on the PH50B
into a pair of line level inputs on the receiver. Do not use inputs labeled
‘phono’ as these will apply the RIAA equalization curve a second time, resulting in distortion and a loss of high frequencies.

Using the Balanced Outputs
The balanced XLR outputs on the PH50B allow you to connect to devices with balanced inputs, including some home stereo receivers, and pro audio equipment such as recording interfaces or mixing consoles. This allows you to set up a turntable for playback in a home theater or recording studio, or to convert your vinyl collection to a digital format using recording software. Ensure that you are connecting to inputs that are set for line-level operation. Once connected, should you encounter buzz or hum from ground loops, simply engage the LIFT switch on the front of the PH50B to lift the audio ground on the XLR outputs. The balanced outputs on the PH50B can be set between two different outputs levels using an internal push-switch. The default setting is +4dB with the switch in the ‘out’ position, and -10dB with the switch pushed in.

SECURING CABLES
The PH50B is equipped with a fully variable high-pass (low cut) lter that can be activated to eliminate excessive low frequency rumble. This can occur when listening to music at higher levels. If you encounter rumble, simply turn the dial fully counter-clockwise (7:00 o’clock) and then slowly turn clock-wise until the problem subsides. This handy control can also be used to reduce low frequency transmission to other rooms. Bass energy is much more powerful than mids and highs. Cutting the bass enables you to increase the volume without causing others discomfort. You are now ready to enjoy.
A cable clamp next to the power jack can be employed to prevent accidental disconnection. Loosen the clamp, pass the power cable through
and re-tighten.
