The Kayak HD production switcher family
includes 14 highly affordable systems
with two frame sizes and up to 4.5 M/Es
designed for live production, corporate
studios, and editing applications in
environments requiring HD and/or SD
production capabilities. Kayak’s multiple
configuration options provide a right­priced solution for virtually any set of
production requirements. To provide
an even greater range of solutions,
Grass Valley™ has applied powerful new
Kayenne™ technology to the Kayak™ HD
family by pairing its Kayak HD video
processing frame with the Kayenne
XL panel. This Kayenne XL package
provides access to a new set of high-end
features for Kayak HD users as well as

transitions, Kayak’s flexibilit y through a
variety of configurations and rich set of

Up to 28 Keyers

Kayak offers up to six keyers in every
M/E, plus another four keyers in a half
M/E for a total of 28 keyers in a 4.5 M/E
switcher. Four of the keyers in each
M/E are full keyers with masks and
wipes, a video/key frame store, optional
Chromatte™ chroma key, and iDPM

or logo generators by freezing these
graphics on the keyers themselves.
Video and key images grabbed in the
keyers can be modified by the internal
Digital Picture Manipulators (iDPM). The
optional keyers 5 and 6 increase the
number of keyers in a single M/E to six,
for linear or luminance keys.

The four linear/luminance keyers in
the half M/E add either a compositing
engine for an additional upstream M/E or
Program Preset, or four DSKs that can
be placed downstream of any of the full
M/Es or Program/Preset.

POWERFUL INTERNAL EFFECTS ADD PUNCH TO YOUR PRODUCTIONS

With up to six keyers, two backgrounds, two utility busses, up to four iDPM channels, and up to four chroma keyers per full M/E, Kayak HD
switchers give you more power per M/E than any other switcher in their class.

So Many 3D DVEs Available

With four iDPMs per M/E, Kayak
ensures there is always a high-end 3D
effects channel available for an artistic
advantage. iDPM options include
extensive Kurl™ nonlinear warp effects
such as page turn, page roll, slits,
mirrors, spheres, and ripples along with
Spektra™ advanced lighting, defocus,
glow, and output recursive effects for
unlimited creative effects in each of the
full keyers. Four more channels of eDPM
(expanded Digital Picture Manipulator)
can be installed in the 8 RU frame
expansion slot. The eDPM channels
provide the advantage of an external
DVE compositing multiple channels to
re-enter on one or more keyers, or M/E
background transitions. With a total
of 20 full-featured DVE channels, no
competitor can match Kayak’s effect
creation capabilities.

Exclusive MultiMix with Offset
Transitions

To simplify and automate transition
effects, Kayak’s exclusive MultiMix with
Offset Transitions offers a graphical
user interface with separate control
of transition element timing for
managing complex transitions, with
separate transitions types allowed
for each element. Transition elements

include keyers, backgrounds, iDPM
channels, eDPM channels, external DVE
channels, or any of Kayak’s six internal
RAMRecorder channels with embedded
audio record and playback. MultiMix
is very powerful for quickly creating
transitions like the popular flying keys
with animations.

Simulcast Made Simple

Once the effects are created, Kayak
makes it simple to get multiple versions
of the program to air with Macros,
Bus Linking, M/E Couple, and FlexiKey
programmable clean feeds.

M/E Couple lets the operator control
mirrored M/Es to enhance and simplify
multi-branded feeds. Both M/E Couple
and Aux Bus Linking include automatic
source substitution—further improving
control of content for separate program
feeds.

FlexiKey provides independent graphics
on simulcast outputs for alternate
branding or simultaneous HD and SD
feeds. The six outputs (four PGM per
M/E, two PVW) can include any or all
keyers in an M/E on any or all of four
outputs of the M/E, in any combination.
Graphics can be positioned for a 4:3
aspect ratio of an SD feed when used
with the SetDef output conversion
option.

Multiple Control and Processor
Combinations

Sharing of the resources in a single
processor mainframe, such as M/Es,
DPMs, or RAMRecorder channels, is
simultaneously allowed from multiple
Kayak and Kayenne XL control panels.
Conversely, one Kayenne XL panel
controls many different processor
mainframes and other devices.

Completely Self-Contained Multi­Format Video Production

The SetDef output conversion, combined
with MatchDef input conversion, allows
complete, multi-format production with
up/down/cross converting of HD input
and output formats, including aspect
ratio conversion on up to four outputs,
or eight outputs in the 8 RU frame.
Simultaneous HD and SD program
feeds are easily done without external
conversion gear. Signals converted
with MatchDef video input converters
may be used anywhere within Kayak
HD production switcher, sent to any
output (including aux buses), and do not
consume expensive resources such as
resizers or other M/E resources.
