MARSPCversion8.0.Tousethetool,youmustrstrestorearchivedlestotheMARS
UNIXsystemfromthetapearchive.Thetoolcannotdirectlyconvertlesfromtape.
Thetoolsupportsthreeworkows:

Toconvertslotandreportles,youmustrestorethemonthecustomer’sexisting
MARS3000,MARS5000,MARS8000system,runningMARSUNIXversion4.1.
YoucanruntheconversiontoolonasystemwithorwithoutMARSPCinstalled.
SupportedOperatingSystemsforthetoolincludeWindows2003Server ,Windows
2000,andWindowsXP.BecausethetoolisWindows-based,youmustsetupSamba
ServicesontheMARSUNIXsystem.ThisallowstheWindowssystemtoaccessthe
MARSdirectory,wheretherestoredlesreside.
NOTE:
SambaallowsnetworksharesforchosenUNIXdirectoriestoappeartoMicrosoft
WindowsasnormalWindowsfoldersaccessibleviathenetwork.

PlanningYourConversion
RestoringtherawslotlesfromthetapearchivetotheMARSUNIXsystemcantake
uptothreeminutesperle.Thisisduetothesizeoftheslotleanddatatransferrate
ofthetapedrive.Pleaseconsiderthetimeinvolvedwhenplanningyourconversion.
Forexample,asingletapearchiving50slotlescouldtakeaslongas2.5hoursto
restore.OncerestoredontheMARSUNIXsystem,theconversionprocessitselfruns
quickly,takingonly15-30secondstoconverteachslotle.
Toshortenthetimeneeded,youmaywanttoconsiderconvertingonlyreportles.
Theselesaremuchsmallerandtakemuchlesstimetorestore,andonlyafew
secondstoconvert.
Whenplanningyourconversion,rememberthatyoumusthave:

•AworkingMARSUNIXsystem.
•AnoperatingDATTapedriveavailable.
Makesurethatalldataconversionsarecompletedbeforeremovingthesystemfrom
thenetworkorretiringthesystemfromservice.
ConversionWorkow
Followingisthegeneralconversionworkow:
1.Ifyouareconvertingtherawholterdata,deletepatientsontheUNIXsystemto
openasmanyslotsaspossible.
2.RestorethearchivedatafromDATtotheUNIXworkstation.
3.Chooseoneofthefollowingoptions:
•RuntheconversiondirectlyontherestoredslotlesontheUNIXsystem.
•Copytherestoredslotlestoanetworkshareandconvertthelesfromthere.

YoumaywanttoconvertexistingslotlesandreportsontheMARSUNIXworkstation
astherststepoftheconversionprocessbeforedeletingthem.Ifyoupreferto
archivethecurrentdataandconvertitlater ,copyittoDATTape,asdescribedinthe
Operator’sManual,“StoringDATAtoTAPE”intheMARSUser’sManual.

UnderstandingConvertandArchive
Theconversiontoolsavestheconvertedlesusingthestandardslotlenaming
convention.Toavoidgeneratingalargenumberofconvertedlesintoasinglefolder ,
GEHealthcarerecommendsyoucreateafolderstructurefortheconvertedlesso
thatitaidsinidentifyingthelesinit.Forexample,ifyoualreadyhaveanaming
schemeforthetapes,youmaywanttousesomethingsimilarasafolderstructure
fortheconverteddata.
Whendataisconvertedtothearchivestate,anindex.datleiscreatedinthefolder
andupdatedeachtimenewlesareadded.Theindex.datprovidesinformationtothe
MARSPCthatidentiestheslotorreportletothesystemtorestoreitifneeded.Ifthe
destinationfolderischanged,anewindex.datleiscreated.Youcannotcombine
archivedleslateronfromtwodifferentfolderssincetheindex.datleisindexing
onlythearchivelesforonefolder .
Eachtimeyouruntheconversiontool,itaddstheconvertedorarchivedlestothe
destinationfolder .Iftherearepreviouslyarchivedorconvertedles,newlesare
