Intelligent Face Detection
Intelligent Face Detection can distinguish human faces, and adjust their focus and brightness. It can even detect and focus on two faces on opposite sides of the frame, where ordinarily the background in the center of the frame would be focused. Intelligent Face Detection adjusts the brightness of detected faces, so faces can be captured brightly and clearly. The red-eye effect can also be corrected.

• The battery is not fully charged at shipment and must be fully charged before being used.
• Do not stick labels onto the battery as this could cause the battery to become jammed inside the camera.
• Any contact between the battery terminals could cause the battery to short circuit and overheat.
• See “Notes and Cautions” (included) for information on the battery.
• Always use the Rechargeable Battery NP-50 (included). The use of other brands of rechargeable battery could cause faults or damage to the camera.
• Do not split or peel outer labels of the battery. If outer labels of the battery are split or peeled, Do not use the battery, but replace it with a new one.
• Do not use the rechargeable battery NP-50 for the digital camera compatible with the rechargeable battery NP-40. The battery will be stuck inside of the camera and disable to be taken out.

Notes on Using the Battery Charger
Use with the following power supply cord set: Cord: UL Listed, Type SPT-2, No.18 AWG, rated 300V, 10A, minimum 4 ft (1.2m), maximum 10 ft (3m) long. One end terminates in a molded-on, parallel-blade, (nonpolarized) attachment plug with a 7A, 125V (NEMA 115P) configuration.
• The battery and battery charger themselves will become warm due to the power stored inside them. This is normal and does not indicate a fault. Wherever possible, use the battery charger in a well-ventilated location.
• There may be vibration noises from inside the battery charger during us e. This is normal and does not i ndicate a fault.
• The battery charger could cause interference if placed close to a radio during charging. In this event, move the radio and charger further apart.
• Do not leave the battery charger in the following types of locations:
• Extremely humidity or high temperatures, such as close to a heating appliance or in direct sunlight
• Places with strong vibration
• In very dusty places
• The battery charger accepts input voltages of 100-240 V AC at 50 or 60 Hz and can be used all over the world. However, the shape of the plug and socket-outlet depends on the country of use. Consult your travel agent for details.

Subjects not suitable for Intelligent Face Detection
Intelligent Face Detection automatically focuses on a face(s). However, difficulties will occur with the Intelligent Face Detection mode in the following situations:
• The face is obscured by glasses, sunglasses, a hat or hair.
• The subject is too far away to recognize a face Intelligent Face Detection may not work if the subject is not a person (such as a pet or other animal), or if the camera is not held correctly.
Use AF/AE lock (p.35) to guarantee best result when shooting a subject that is not suited for Intelligent Face Detection.
CAUTION
• If the camera or subject move as the picture is taken, the subject’s face may move out of the Intelligent Face Detection frame.
• When the camera is detecting multiple faces, the green frame is set around the face near the center. If you want to focus on another subject, move the camera so that the new subject is in the center of the screen. If focus is still not achieved, press (Intelligent Face Detection) to turn off the function, and take the picture using AF/AE lock (p.35). Intelligent Face Detection can focus on a face in a white frame providing the subjects in the green and white frame are of the same focal length.
• Pressing the shutter button halfway with Intelligent Face Detection off, the focus will be on the center of the frame.

This mode shoots 2 images continuously without flash and with flash. Shooting with flash allows you to take a picture of a main subject brightly. Shooting without flash produces beautiful images that retain the natural ambience. This mode is useful for shooting 2 different types of pictures at the same time. When pressing the shutter button, first picture is taken without flash and next picture is taken with flash. Always 2 pictures are taken per 1 shot. Do not move the camera until shooting has ended.
This mode produces beautiful images that retain the natural ambience when shots are taken in low-light conditions. This mode is also ideal for shooting indoors, or in situations where the flash cannot be used. Camera sets the high-sensitivity setting when selecting the Natural light mode. This mode is effective for reducing camera shake and moving-subject blurring when taking pictures in lowlight conditions.
Use this mode for photography to get beautiful skin tones and soft overall tone.
Shoots face skin appear smooth. Whole image may be soft focused.
Use this mode for shooting scenery in daylight and provides crisp, clear shots of scenery such as buildings and mountains.
Use this mode to take pictures of a moving subject. It gives priority to faster shutter speeds.
Use this mode for shooting evening and night scenes. A picture is taken with a slow shutter of up to 8 seconds. Refer to “Setting [ LONG EXPOSURE] in the [/ NIGHT] mode” (p.55).
Use this mode to shoot fireworks. It is effective for taking more vivid shots of fireworks with a slow shutter. Refer to “Setting the exposure time in the [ FIREWORKS] mode” (➝p.55).

d Setting the Flash (Intelligent Flash)
Flash photography is useful for taking pictures at night or indoor dark locations. Choose from 7 flash modes according to the type of shot. See p.58 for information on the available Shooting modes.
MEMO
By calculating subject distance and brightness, the camera automatically adjusts the flash amount and sensitivity to suit shooting conditions. This maintains consistent balance of bright/dark areas across the image in low-light conditions (dimly-lit room, etc). The Intelligent Flash feature guarantees consistent results when using the flash.
The flash setting changes each time you press d (q).
When [ FACE DETECTIONbREMOVAL ON] is set.
MEMO
When pressing the shutter button down halfway, b appears on the LCD monitor before the flash fires.
[ AUTO FLASH] (not displayed)
Use this mode for ordinary photography. The flash fires as required by the shooting conditions.
[ RED EYE REDUCTION]
This mode is suitable for shooting portraits in low-light conditions. Use this mode to minimize red-eye (eyes appear in red in the finished photo).
MEMO Red-eye effect
When using the flash to take a picture of people in lowlight conditions, their eyes sometimes appear red in the picture. This is caused by the light of the flash reflecting off the inside of the eye.
[d FORCED FLASH], [ FORCED FLASH]

This mode suppresses white flaring and black patches in scenes with high contrast while also enabling you to achieve good levels of contrast in pictures taken indoors or in cloudy weather where a wide dynamic range is not needed.
[ 100%], [ 200%], [ 400%]:
Takes the picture with a fixed dynamic range value, regardless of the scene being shot.
CAUTION
• When dynamic range is set to 200 % or 400 %, some [ ISO] settings cannot be selected. Also, some [ DYNAMIC RANGE] settings may not be selectable depending on the [ ISO] setting.
• Only [AUTO] can be selected for the [ DYNAMIC RANGE] setting while [ TOP 12] or [ FINAL 12] is set.
• Only [AUTO] can be selected for the [ DYNAMIC RANGE] setting while [ FinePix COLOR] is set to [ p-CHROME].
• Although wider dynamic range settings will allow you to take pictures with good levels of contrast, they will also increase the amount of speckling in your images. Choose the dynamic range setting that best suits the conditions.

[ POWER MANAGEMENT] cannot be set when shooting mode is set for ..
[ POWER SAVE]
The number of displayed frames per second will be minimized. Also, the LCD monitor display will automatically go dark when no operation is made for 10 seconds to save power.
CAUTION
• When Intelligent Face Detection function (p.32) is ON, [ POWER SAVE] will be cancelled.

MEMO
Intelligent Face Detection function (p.32) will automatically turn ON when using an optional AC power adapter and DC coupler.
[ QUICK AF]
When the shutter button is pressed halfway, the focusing speed will be increased. This function allows you to shoot pictures quickly and is effective when you do not want to miss the chance to shoot. Be aware of the battery charge, since the camera consumes more power.
