Mustang has a performance reputation and coolness factor that’s undeniable. And if you think that’s a biased statement —
Motor Trend listed the 2005 Mustang GT as one of the “five coolest performance cars for under $30,000.”
4.0L SOHC V-6 Engine — standard on all V-6
models, but a long way from “standard
transportation,” with 210 horsepower @ 5300 rpm
and 240 lb.-ft. of torque @ 3500 rpm, Electronic
Throttle Control (ETC) and an available 5-speed
automatic transmission
4.6L 3-valve SOHC V-8 —
standard on GT, this
engine puts out 300
horsepower @ 5750 rpm
MustangMustang
and 320 lb.-ft. of torque
@ 4500 rpm with
aluminum cylinder heads
and block, 3 valves per
cylinder, coil-on-plug
ignition, variable cam
timing and low profile
55mm dual-bore throttle
body
Optional 5-speed
Automatic Transmission
— closely spaced
ratios keep the
engine in its power
band for optimum
acceleration under
wide-open throttle,
yet the wider overall
ratio gives remarkably
good fuel economy
and Mustang has
a short first gear
for better off-the-line
performance
Four-wheel Disc Brakes
— the vented front and
rear rotors are larger
than the previous
generation with stiff
calipers designed to
provide better pedal
feel, long pad and
rotor life, short
stopping distances and
consistent stopping
power, even under the
strain of excessive heat
buildup from repeated
hard braking
Rear-wheel Drive — true
“muscle car” performance
feel offers better off-line
performance and improved
weight distribution for
exceptional handling
characteristics
MacPherson Strut
Front Suspension —
these struts use
friction-reducing
geometry that allows
precise tuning of the
shock absorber
valves for remarkable
ride and handling
characteristics
True Dual Exhaust — 2.5-inch
stainless steel mandrel-bent
exhaust with crossover balance
tube to help reduce back
pressure is standard on
Mustang GT and helps the
engine breathe while gently
sounding its presence
3-link Rear Suspension
with Panhard Rod —
provides precise
control of the rear
axle, while the central
upper control arm
that’s fastened to the
differential front end
gives 60 percent more
leverage against
windup for smooth,
consistent launches
3.55:1 Rear Axle Ratio —
suited to the needs of the
high-performance driver
and standard on GT with
a manual transmission,
this rear axle makes great
use of GT’s V-8 engine,
offering excellent off-theline acceleration

PERFORMANCE/HANDLING
This page is about:
4.0L SOHC V-6
4.6L 3V SOHC V-8
Powertrain Combinations
4.0L SOHC V-6 (V-6 models)
• This single overhead camshaft 60° V-6 provides
a driving experience few
would expect from a
6-cylinder engine.
Surprisingly spirited, it offers
the affordability and fuel
economy of a V-6 for
customers who are more
interested in Mustang style
than pure performance
• The 4.0L SOHC V-6 engine is only five horsepower
shy of a 1996 Mustang GT V-8 engine
• The 60° V-6 engine is a naturally balanced V
design that is designed to produce less vibration
and smoother operation than 90° V-6 designs
• This engine features a composite intake manifold
specifically designed for Mustang to provide the
right balance of maximum airflow with the sound
characteristics of a classic Mustang
• The engine breathes better, thanks to the tunedlength cast iron exhaust manifolds and 2.5-inch
exhaust pipes for optimized exhaust flow
• There’s also a unique camshaft grind, enhanced
fuel-injection system and reduced evaporative
linkage — all designed to make this engine
a powerful, reliable, yet economical alternative
to the V-8
• Torque-based electronic throttle control delivers
improved response and efficiency over a wide
range of operating conditions while eliminating a
traditional pathway into the cabin that mechanical
linkage requires, reducing noise and vibration
• The engine’s hydromount liquid-filled engine mounts
absorb engine vibrations while the composite cam
covers, dual-mode crankshaft damper and coated
pistons all work to produce a smooth, quiet ride
• The girdled crankcase is designed to provide
increased strength and durability while
contributing to the quiet ride
• The lightweight design of the V-6 engine helps
the vehicle maintain a near 50/50 weight
distribution front to rear
Powertrain Combinations
4.6L 3V SOHC V-8
(GT models)
• At 65 horsepower per liter, this
engine is definitely designed for
those performance-minded
customers who like to push their
cars to the limit. Offering 40
more horsepower than the
previous generation V-8, it’s
standard on Mustang GT
• This engine features a
lightweight, deep-skirt aluminum
block for optimum stiffness and
strength, yet it’s 75 pounds
lighter than a comparable cast
iron design, with key areas
reinforced to add rigidity
without adding weight
• The 3-valves-per-cylinder design
— 2 intake, 1 exhaust —
substantially improves engine
breathing, offering a more
direct, ported style path to the
valves for better airflow at peak
engine speeds
• Center-mounted spark plugs help
ensure complete, more efficient
combustion while the coil-onplug configuration allows
more precise spark control
while freeing valuable
underhood space
• Charge Motion Control Valves
(CMCV) work to improve
combustion. At low engine speeds
the valves are closed to induce a
tumbling effect for thorough
mixing and more efficient burn —
while at higher speeds the valves
open for maximum flow into the
combustion chambers at wideopen throttle
• Variable Cam Timing (VCT)
offers power without penalty by
allowing valves to operate at
optimum points in the
combustion cycle, while tailoring
to the engine’s load and speed
• Torque-based electronic throttle
control delivers improved
response and efficiency over a
wide range of operating
conditions while eliminating a
traditional pathway into the
cabin that mechanical linkage
requires, reducing noise
and vibration
• The intake manifold is
specifically tuned for Mustang
and designed to provide a
balance between maximum
airflow and classic Mustang
performance characteristics
• The intake has tuned intake
runners and incorporates a lowprofile 55mm dual bore throttle
body connected to an intake
tube that draws cold air from
outside the engine compartment
• Tuned-length cast iron exhaust
manifolds provide optimized
exhaust flow designed for
increased performance
• A combination of engine
technologies allows the engine
to run a high compression
ratio (9.8:1) with regular,
87-octane fuel
• The engine’s hydromount liquidfilled engine mounts contribute
to a smooth, quiet ride by
absorbing engine vibrations
before they can reach the cabin
