Power Supply Could Fail and Emit Smoke

Situation:
A problem was found in the A9 Power Supply assembly which can cause it to fail. The
failure mechanism causes several parts in the power supply to become hot enough to smoke,
but there is no possibility of fire. This problem is limited to the serial number range specified
above. Howevcr, not all instruments in this serial number range have the problem. The
power supply date code (inside the instrument) must be examined to determine if a particular
instrument could be affected by this problem. Power supplies with the affected date code
must be replaced. Not all power supplies with the affected date codes will fail, but there is no
way to further limit susceptibility.

Solution/Action:
The 8920A Assembl y Leve l Repai r (AL R) Ma nu al (HP part nu mbe r 08 92 0- 90 03 6) con tai n s
assembly and disassembly procedures for the instrument.
To determine if an instrument in the above serial number range has a power supply which could
be affected by this problem do the following:
1. Remove the outer cover of the instrument.
2. Check the date code of the power supply. View the power supply from the bottom of the
instrument. On a large square capacitor near the rear on the power supply ther is a label with
information printed on it. The date code is printed after the word, "DATE".
3. If the date code is 91 14 , 91 17 or 91 18 , the powe r su pp l y co ul d fail so it sh ou ld be rep lac ed .
Follow the instructions in the next section to replace the power supply. If the date code is
any other value, the power supply is not affected by this problem so replace the outer cover
and return the 8920 to normal operation.
To replace a power supply with date code 9114, 9117 or 9118 do the following:
1. Order an exchange Power Supply assembly (part number 0892069110).
2. Remove the A9 Power Supply assembly from the instrument following the removal
instructions in the ALR manual.
3. Install the exchange power supply in the instrument following the installation instructions in
the ALR manual.
4. Return the power supply removed from the instrument in the package provided with the
exchange assembly. Fill out the failure information card and state this service note as the
reason for changing the power supply.
This completes the repair.
