Save all packing and protective materials in case you need to ship the printer in the future. It should always be transported in its original pack aging or equivalent materials.
Caution:
c
Be sure to remove all protective materials before you turn on the printer.
There are several models of the printer designed for different voltages, and it is n ot possible to adjust the printer fo r use at another voltage. If the label on the b ack of the printer does not show the correct voltage for your country, contac t your dealer.

Choosing a Place for the Printer

Follow the guidelines below when selecting a location for your printer.
Place the printer on a flat, stable surface. The printer will not
operate properly if it is tilted or at an angle.
Place the pr inter where you can easily connect it to a network
interface cable, if necessary.
1
Leave adequate room around the printer for easy operation
and maintenance.
Avoid using or storing the printer in places subject to rapid
changes in temperature and humidity. Also keep it away from d irect sunlight, strong light, heat sources, or excessive moisture or dust.
Avoid places subject to shocks and vibrations.Place the printer near a wall outlet where you easily unplug
the power cord.

Note for F rench-speaking users:
Placez l’imprimante près d’une prise de contact où la fiche peut être débranchée facilement.
Avoid electrical outlets controlled by wall switches or
automatic timers. An interruption in power can erase information in the memory of your printer or computer. Also avoid outlets on the same ci rcuit as large motors or other appliances that can cause voltage fluctuations.
Keep th e entire com puter system away from potential sources
of electromagnetic interference, such as loudspeakers or the base units of cordless telephones.
Use a grounded power outlet; do not use an adapter plug.Make sure the paper path is clear and unobstructed before you
print on continuous paper. See Chapter 3 for details.
If you plan to use a printer stand, follow these guidelines:
Use a stan d that s upports at least 18 kg (39.6 lb).Never use a stand that tilts the printer. The printer should
always be kept level.
Position your printer’s power cord and interface cable so they
do not interfere with paper feeding. If possible, secure the cables to a leg of the printer stand.

You can load single-sheet multi-part forms from the paper guide or with the optional cut-sheet feeder. For instructions, see “Using Single Sheets” on page 3-6 or “Loading paper from the cut-sheet feeder” in Chapter 5. You can load continuous multi-p art forms in the same way as you load ordinary continuous paper. For instructions, see “Using Continuous Paper” earlier in this chapter.
Caution:
c
When printing on multi-part forms, make sure that your software settings keep the printing entirely within the pri ntable area of the forms. P rinting on the ed ge of a multi-part form can dama ge the pri nt hea d . For information about the printable area, see the paper specifications in Appendix A.
Load single-sheet multi-part forms glued at the side of the form only from the paper guide, not from the o ptional cut-sheet feeder.

Using Labels

When s electing labels for prin ting, always choose labels mounted on continuous backing sheets with spro cket holes for u se with a tractor. Do no t use labels on shiny single-sheet backing, because the backing sheet tends to slip and may not feed properly.
You load labels in the same way as you load continuous paper, except that you set the paper thickness le ver to “2.” For instructions on loading continuous paper, see “Using Continuous Paper” e arlier in this chapter.

Caution:
When printing on labels, m ake sure that your software settings keep the printin g entirely within the printable area. Printing on the edge of a label can damage the print head. For information about the printable area, see the paper specifications in Appendix A.
Because labels are especially sensitive to tempera ture and humidity, use them only under normal operating conditions.
Do not le ave labels loaded in the printer between print jobs; they tend to curl and may come off their backing and jam the printer when you resume printing.
Never feed labels backward with the Loa d / Eje c t or Tear Off/Bin buttons. Labels can easily peel off their

Skip-over-perforation
This feature is available only when continuous paper is selected. When you turn on this feature, the printer provides a one-inch (25.4 mm) margin between the last line printed on one page and the first line printed on the next page. Because most application programs set their own top and bottom margins, you should use this featur e only if you cannot set your top and bottom margins using your application.
Auto tear-off
Wh en auto tear-off is on and you are us ing continuous pa per with the tractor, the printer automatically advances the paper perforation to the tear- off position, where you can easil y te ar off the printed page( s ). When the printer receives data again, it automatically moves the paper back to the top-of-form position and starts printing, so you can use all of the next page.

This auto interf ace allows you to share t he printer among multiple compute rs without making changes.
Wh en you connect one computer to the printer, you can selec t the parallel or optional interfac e according to the interface your computer requires.
Auto I/F (interface) wait time

In high speed draft mode, the printer prints up to 300 cps (characters per second) at 10 cpi (characters per inch) when the Draft font is selected. If you select normal speed draft, it prints up to 250 cps at 10 cpi when Draft is selecte d.
Input buffer
The input buf fer stores data sent from your computer. T he input buffer c an store up to 64KB of data, so you can f ree your computer for other tasks while the printer prints. When the buffer is off, the buffer cannot store data, s o the c omputer must wait for the printer to print eac h character before sending the next character.
Buzze r (b e e p)
The printer beeps when an error occurs. See Chapter 7, “Troubleshooting,” for more information. If you do not want the printer to beep, turn off this fe ature.

Auto CR (carria ge return)
When auto carriage return is on, each line feed (LF) code or ESC J code is accompanied by a car riage return (CR) code so t he p rinter moves the next printing position to the left margin. When this feature is off, you must send a CR cod e after the line feed code to move the printing position to the left margin. This feature is availab le only in IBM emulation mode.
