RAID Memory Update
This document updates information contained in your Dell PowerEdge 4400 system documentation.
System Memory Requirements
Before you upgrade your system to support the PowerEdge Expandable RAID Controller (PERC) 3/Di
redundant array of independent disks (RAID) controller, or before you upgrade the RAID cache memory in your system, you must ensure that your system has enough system memory installed. If you
are installing 64 megabytes (MB) of RAID cache memory, you must have a minimum of 128 MB of
system memory. If you are installing 128 MB of RAID cache memory, or upgrading from 64 MB to
128 MB of RAID cache memory, you must have a minimum of 256 MB of system memory.
Upgrading the System BIOS and the PERC 3/Di
RAID Controller Firmware
Before you install the RAID controller cache memory module, determine the current versions of your
system’s basic input/output system (BIOS) and the PERC 3/Di RAID controller firmware. The BIOS
messages displayed during the power-on self test (POST) will include version numbers of existing
components.
The BIOS installed on your system must be version A03 or later to support 128 MB of RAID cache
memory. The PERC 3/Di RAID controller firmware must be at least the version on the bootable
diskette provided with the upgrade kit.
To upgrade the system BIOS, use the upgrade diskette, or download the latest version from the Dell
PowerEdge 4400 file download page at http://support.dell.com.
To upgrade the RAID controller firmware, follow the instructions in the readme file on the upgrade
diskette.

NOTICE: Once you have upgraded to the most current version of either the BIOS or the
RAID controller firmware, do not downgrade to any earlier version, even to the versions
on the upgrade diskette. Downgrading to an earlier version of the BIOS or the RAID
controller firmware may cause other components to malfunction.
Disconnecting the RAID Battery
Before removing the original memory module, disconnect the RAID battery from the system board.
Leave the battery disconnected until you have installed the new memory module. For more information on disconnecting the battery, see “Integrated RAID Controller” in the Dell PowerEdge 4400
Systems Service Manual, which is available at http://support.dell.com.
NOTICE: If you do not disconnect the battery, both the original and upgrade memory
modules may be permanently damaged.
Installing the RAID Memory Module
For detailed information about installing the memory module in this upgrade kit, see Activating the
PERC 3/Di, which is available at http://support.dell.com.
Storing the Original RAID Memory Module
To store the original RAID memory module, place it in the protective packaging shipped with the
upgrade kit. The packaging will protect against static discharge that could damage the memory
module.

of Independent Disks [Matrice redondante de disques indépendants]) évolutif PowerEdge (PowerEdge
http://support.dell.com.
