Cambridge Audio Azur 540P and 640P phono pre-amplifiers
Vinyl lovers have plenty to gain from latest additions to critically acclaimed Azur range
In this age of music file downloads and cute little hard disk portables it may seem strange but the good
old turntable is, in fact, currently enjoying a surprisingly high level of popularity.
True to form Cambridge Audio is answering the demands of audiophiles with the introduction of two
high-quality, pre-amplifier phono stages, the 540P and 640P. The latest additions to the company's
award-winning amplifiers or can be used with any other quality amplifier.
The £40, entry level, Azur 540P – for use with moving magnet cartridges – embraces a new proprietary
short path circuit design, utilising high grade, low-noise transistors normally associated with far more
expensive equipment, audio-grade poly caps for the RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America)
filter section, and includes an integrated subsonic filter which removes low frequency energy, such as
motor noise and record warp common on budget turntable designs. The quality of performance easily
matches that of designs costing three or four times the price.

The more highly specified Azur 640P (£70) embraces improved amplification circuitry to provide even
lower distortion and noise, while its MC function incorporates the higher gain stage needed for
compatibility with high-end, Moving Coil cartridges. In addition, the 640P employs multi-parallel, poly
capacitors to achieve exceptional RIAA accuracy of only 0.3dB up to a staggering 50kHz, while the
subsonic filter can be bypassed.
For the very best sonic performance both units have gold plated input connectors and come complete
with external power supplies to reduce electronic noise interference to sensitive circuitry.
Completing the packages are exceptionally solid enclosures, replete with vibration absorbing chassis
and thick aluminium front panels, matching the rest of Cambridge Audio’s Azur range.
