Using the Brother printer driver1
A printer driver translates the data from your PC application, and using a page description language, converts
it into a format that can be understood by the printer/multi-function device.
You will find appropriate drivers on the CD-ROM supplied with the machine. Install those drivers by following
the Quick Setup Guide. You can also download the latest drivers from the Brother Solutions Center at:
http://solutions.brother.com

Features1
This machine offers many features you will find in a high quality ink jet printer.
Brilliant High Quality Output
Printing at up to 1200 × 6000 dpi on glossy paper to get the highest possible resolution. (See Resolution in
the Specifications in the User’s Guide.) The printer driver supports N in 1, Watermark printing, Color
Enhancement technology and many other features.
Low Running Cost
Whenever a particular ink color requires replacement, you only have to replace that individual cartridge.
USB
The Universal Serial Bus Interface provides fast communication with your PC.
Ethernet
The Ethernet interface lets your machine communicate with multiple PCs connected on a network. This
feature is available for Network Standard models only.
Wireless LAN (IEEE802.11b/g) (For Wireless models only)
The wireless LAN capability lets your machine communicate with other wireless devices using the
IEEE802.11b/g wireless standard in Infrastructure and Ad-hoc modes. (See the Network User’s Guide for
details.) This feature is available for Wireless Network Standard models only.

Printing
Choosing the right type of paper1
For high quality printing, it is important to choose the right type of paper. Be sure to read About paper in the
User’s Guide before buying paper.
Simultaneous printing, scanning and faxing1
Your machine can print from your computer while sending or receiving a fax in memory, or while scanning a
document into the computer. Fax sending will not be stopped during PC printing.
However, when the machine is copying or receiving a fax on paper, it pauses the PC printing operation, and
then continues printing when copying or fax receiving has finished.
Clearing data from the memory1
If the LCD shows Data Remaining, you can clear the data that is left in the printer memory by pressing the
Stop/Exit key on the control panel.

From the Paper Size pull down list choose the size of paper you want to print such as Letter (Borderless)
or Ledger (Borderless) (Available on 11 × 17 models).
Note
For 11 × 17 models
• If your prints look smudged when you use Ledger paper, your paper may be short grain paper. Choose
Ledger (Short Grain) to avoid smudging. Consult the paper packaging or paper manufacturer for paper
specifications.
• Printing will be slower when using the Ledger (Short Grain) setting.

Automatic Duplex Printing (MFC-6890CDW only)1
The supplied printer driver supports duplex printing. Check Duplex/Booklet if you want to use the duplex
(two-sided) printing feature. In this mode, the machine prints on both sides of the paper automatically.
Guidelines for printing on both sides of the paper1
The Duplex/Booklet function supports Plain Paper for the Media Type and Tray 1 as the Paper Source
only.
If the paper is thin, it may wrinkle.
If the paper is curled, flatten it and then put it back in the paper tray.
If the paper is not feeding properly, it may be curled. Remove the paper and straighten it.
Duplex Setting1
Check Duplex/Booklet and then click the Duplex Setting button to change the duplex settings.

Booklet Printing1
1
Booklet Printing lets you print a document as a booklet. For example: If you want to print a 4 pages file as a
booklet, the machine will automatically print page 4 and page 1 on the same side of the paper first and then
page 2 and page 3 on the other side of the paper. To make the booklet, fold the printed page down the middle.
Duplex Type1
There are six types of automatic duplex binding directions available for each orientation.
Binding Offset1If you check the Binding Offset option, you can also specify the offset for binding in inches or millimeters.
Note
When you use the duplex printing function, Duplex 1 or Duplex 2 features may help to reduce paper feed
problems. Go to Advanced tab of the printer driver and then click the Other Print Options button. From
the Printer Function menu, choose Advanced Duplex Settings.
• Choose Duplex 1 to reduce print speed.
• Choose Duplex 2 to reduce print speed and ink density.
When you choose the duplex printing function, the machine uses all ink cartridges for color/grayscale print.
