This B&M NAG-1 Locking Dipstick
has been designed to work on some
Chrysler/Dodge vehicles equipped
with a NAG-1 (W5A380 & W5A580)
transmission and MOPAR p/n:
4591958AD (3.5L &3.6L V6), p/n:
4591880AA (5.7L V8) & p/n:
5037793AC (6.1L & 6.4L V8) transmission oil filler tubes. Please verify
your vehicle transmission oil filler
tube part number with a Chrysler/Dodge dealer if in question. The
B&M NAG-1 Locking Dipstick sits
in place of your stock cap plug and
allows you to check for fluid level
without a scan tool.
INTRODUCTION
Automatic transmission fluid expands as its temperature rises and
fluid level differs greatly to fluid temperature. Therefore, there are two
different scales for checking the level of hot fluid and cold fluid on the
dipstick. Though the fluid level can
be checked without warming up the
fluid on the “25°C” range, we highly
recommend checking the fluid level
when the fluid is at operating tem-
perature. To obtain an accurate
fluid check, drive the vehicle until it
is warmed up (approximately 20
miles). If your vehicle has been
operated for an extended period at
high speeds, in city traffic during
hot weather or pulling a trailer, the
vehicle should be turned off for
about 30 minutes to allow fluid to
cool before checking.
WARNING: There is a risk of accident from vehicle starting off by
itself when engine running. There
is a risk of injury from contusions
and burns if you insert your hands
into the engine when it is started or
when it is running. Secure vehicle
to prevent it from moving off by
itself. Wear properly fastened and
close-fitting work clothes. Do not
touch hot or rotating parts.
NOTE: Before inserting the B&M
NAG-1 Locking Dipstick in, be
sure to fully clean off any rust
preventative oil residue with a
clean, dry lint free rag. When
checking the fluid from a factory
filled transmission, it is common
to have a higher fluid reading as
the factory tends for overfilled it
just slightly.
INSTALLATION
STEP 1. With the vehicle turned
OFF, locate the transmission oil filler
tube with cap labeled “DEALER
ONLY”.
STEP 2. Twist the transmission oil
filler tube cap 90° counterclockwise
and then pull to remove.
STEP 3. Fully clean the B&M NAG1 Locking Dipstick by wiping it
down with a dry lint free rag, prior to
inserting the dip stick into the transmission oil filler tube.
STEP 4. Insert the B&M NAG-1
Locking Dipstick fully into the
transmission oil filler tube until it fully
seats and twist 90° clockwise to lock
into place.
STEP 6. The B&M NAG-1 Locking
Dipstick can be left permanently in
the transmission oil filer tube and
the vehicle operated normally with
this dipstick in place.

CHECKING THE FLUID LEVEL
WHEN THE FLUID IS HOT
(RECOMMENDED)
STEP 1. Drive the vehicle 20 miles
or until it reaches normal operating
temperature.
STEP 2. Park the vehicle on a level
surface and engage the parking
brake.
STEP 3. With the parking brake engaged and your foot on the brake
pedal, start the engine and move the
gearshift lever through all of the
gear ranges. Allow sufficient time for
each gear to engage.
STEP 4. Latch the gearshift lever in
P (Park) and leave the engine running.
STEP 5. Remove the dipstick, wiping it clean with a clean, dry lint free
rag.
STEP 6. Install the dipstick making
sure it is fully seated in the filler
tube.
STEP 7. Carefully remove the dipstick and inspect the fluid level. The
fluid should be in the 80°C (176°F)
area for normal operating temperature (See Figure 1).
CHECKING THE FLUID LEVEL
WHEN THE FLUID IS COLD
STEP 1. When the vehicle has not
been driven, and outside temperature is above 50°F, remove the
dipstick, wiping it clean with a
clean, dry lint free rag.
STEP 2. Install the dipstick making
sure it is fully seated in the filler
tube.
STEP 3. Carefully remove the dipstick and inspect the fluid level.
The fluid level should be between
the 25°C (77°F) area on the dipstick
(See Figure 1).
