Radio Reception with DAB

The D-FIRE 01, used in conjunction with the Blaupunkt car radios STOCKHOLM RCM 128, SYDNEY RCM 128 and TORONTO RDM 128, enables you to receive DAB (Digital Audio Broadcasting).
With DAB, you can enjoy radio in digital sound quality.
Unlike conventional radio, DAB always transmits several programmes on a single frequency. These programmes are grouped to form so-called “ensembles”, one ensemble always consisting of several, usually six, programmes. At the same time, one programme can also include up to 12 subprogrammes. A sports station, for example, could broadcast subprogrammes about different sporting events at one and the same time.
Other advantages DAB has to offer are: NEWS and WEATHER: Regular NEWS and WEATHER bulletins are
also broadcast in addition to the traffic announcements. You can have these announcements put through, i.e. when the function is active, announcements received by the D-FIRE 01 will be heard even when the radio system is in cassette or CD mode.
The cassette or CD will be interrupted for the duration of the announcement and play resumed at the end of it. Traffic announcements are broadcast at the volume set for traffic announcements (TA VOL).
Please consult your car radio manual for details of how to adjust TA COL.
DAB-Regional (REG): Since DAB frequencies are broadcast
across an extensive area of the country, you may find that you are receiving traffic announcements irrelevant to the region in which you are currently travelling. In order to avoid this, the DAB transmission areas are subdivided into regions. If you wish to receive announcements for a specific region, select REG ALL. If you wish to hear only supraregional announcements, please select REG NONE.
Dynamic Range Control (DRC): Some radio stations transmit not only their
own programme but also information which enables your D-FIRE 01 to adjust the volume in your car to suit the programme received. This makes it possible, for example when classical music is playing, to raise the volume of quiet passages so that they can also be heard in the car.
This sound adjustment depends upon the information transmitted by the radio stations and is only possible if the information is supplied. If you would like sound adjustment, please select DRC = ON, if not, DRC = OFF.
The NEWS, WEATHER, REG and DRC settings are selected in the DSC menu of your car radio. Please consult your car radio instructions for details of how to find the DSC menu and make adjustments.
NB: As the D-FIRE 01 is operated solely via the car radio, please also read the car radio instructions carefully when you wish to use your D-FIRE 01.

Important Notes

Operating Instructions

What you should not fail to read

Before switching on your car radio, please read the following notes carefully.

Road Safety

Road safety is paramount, so you should always ensure that your car radio does not impair your ability to respond to any given traffic situation. We advise you not to use the radio in critical situations. You should always be able to hear police or fire service warning signals, for example, clearly and in good time. Please therefore only listen to your selected programme at a reasonable volume when driving.
Danger: As there is no background noise with DAB, the radio remains
silent when in the search mode. To avoid the driver being shocked when reception begins, the volume cannot be raised at the car radio during the search run. If you have a remote control, on no account should you use it to raise the volume in such a case.

Installation

Before installing or extending the system yourself, please read the installation and connecting instructions at the end of the operating instructions.

Switching On and Off

Select the DAB mode using the SRC key. “DAB” appears on the display for 2 seconds. If you switch off your radio while in the DAB mode, it will be called up again when you switch back on.
The DAB receiver is now active and the last programme set being played. The name of the set programme (programme display) appears on the display. If DAB reception is not possible, “NO ENS” appears on the display, alternating with the set frequency.

Frequency Display

The current programme name is always shown on the display when DAB programmes are being received. Press to display the channel currently set. You can switch back to the programme display using the << >> keys on the rocker switch.
If no key is pressed within three seconds, the display returns automatically to the programme display.

Ensemble Display

Press to switch to the ensemble name display. The name of the current ensemble appears on the display for three seconds. You can switch back to the programme display using the << >> keys on the rocker switch. If no key is pressed within three seconds, the display returns automatically to the programme display.

Frequency Tuning

Automatic Frequency Tuning

Hold down onds.
“SEARCH ” or “SEARCH ” then appears on the display. An upwards or downwards search for receivable ensembles is made starting from the set frequency. Press on the rocker switch to alter the direction at any time. If an ensemble is found, the search run stops, the ensemble name is briefly displayed and the first programme of the ensemble is played. If no frequency band is found after a complete search run, “NO DAB” appears on the display.

Manual Tuning

You can stop the search run at any time by briefly pressing the << >> keys to set the channel manually. If there is no ensemble available at the set frequency, “NO ENS” appears on the display, alternating with the set frequency. If you set an ensemble which does not fulfil the traffic announcement and programme criteria you have selected, the ensemble name and frequency will appear alternately on the display. No programme will be set.

Selecting an Ensemble

You can also make a direct selection of known, receivable ensembles. An ensemble is “known” when it has been received at least once before or when information about other ensembles is passed to the receiver via DAB. The ensembles most recently received are saved and therefore known.
Press the rocker switch keys twice to select the next or previous known ensemble.
/
“ENS ” or “ENS ” then appears on the display. Once the next ensemble has been found, the ensemble display appears first of all and the first programme is played. If the ensemble located does not contain any programmes with the selected criteria, e.g. TA or PTY, the search continues after three seconds. If no other known ensemble can be received, the frequency search is started.
NB: On long journeys, it may be necessary to carry out a frequency search or DABSCAN (see “Scanning all Receivable Programmes”) in order to receive new ensembles, thus making them known to the radio system.

Selecting a Programme

To select a programme while the radio is playing, please press the << >> keys of the rocker switch. The set then switches to the next or the previous programme. Press the rocker switch several times to browse through all the programmes of the current ensemble in ascending or descending order. when the last programme in an ensemble is reached, the search is resumed at the first.

Selecting Subprogrammes

If a programme contains subprogrammes, the first subprogramme will be tuned in following programme selection. In addition, the name of the subprogramme, if one exists, appears for three seconds on the display. You can only choose between the various subprogrammes if the programme is stored on a station button (see “Storing Programmes”). When the programme has been stored,
press the station button briefly. The subprogrammes are selected one by
one in ascending order with each press of the button. Once the last subprogramme has been reached, the research is resumed at the first.

Changing Memory Levels

Receiving Traffic Announcements with DAB

Like with VHF, many DAB programmes regularly transmit traffic announcements. These programmes transmit an identification signal which is then detected by your DAB receiver. While such a programme is being received, “TP” (Traffic Program) is vis- ible on the display. You can choose whether you wish your listening from another source (e.g. CD, cassette) to be interrupted for traffic announcements via DAB or VHF or not.
NB: As before, recordings of traffic announcements (TIM) can only be made on the FM radio level. The settings in the TA menu in no way affect this function.
These settings are carried out in the TA menu.
Activating the TA menu:
Press the TA button or hold down the TIM button for more than two seconds (TA or TIM, depending on the type of car radio).
Leave the menu and store the settings by holding down the TA or TIM button. The setting is then adopted. If no change occurs within four seconds, the radio switches automatically to the standard display and the last setting selected is stored.
Activating VHF Traffic Announcement Preference
