Package Contents

Before using your Joybook R53 for the first time, please check if you have all the items with you. For details about what should be included in the package, refer to the package contents label on the accessory box. If any of the items are missing or appear to be damaged, contact your dealer. Save the packaging in case you need to ship your Joybook for service.

Getting Your Joybook Ready for Use

1. Installing the battery
Turn your Joybook upside down and put it on a soft clean cloth. With the label side of the battery facing up, slide it gently into the battery compartment until it snaps into place. Move the release latch to the left as shown to lock the battery into place.
2. Connecting the power
• Connect the power cord to the power adapter.
• Connect the power adapter to the power socket on your Joybook.
• Connect the power cord to a wall outlet and start charging the battery.
The power systems and plug types might vary depending on your country/region.

When the battery is charging, the battery indicator appears in amber. When the charging process is complete, the light goes off.
4. Performing initial setup
For details about the colors and meanings of the indicators, refer to the figures in Chapter 1 “Touring Your Joybook” on page 5 and 7.
3. Opening your Joybook
To open your Joybook, slide the latch to the right, and then lift the lid up.
Press the power button to start up your Joybook, and then follow the onscreen instructions to complete the initial Windows XP setup.

Expanding the Capabilities of Your Joybook

Connect an external display device (such as a monitor or projector) to the VGA port of your Joybook.
Connect USB peripherals to the USB port of your Joybook.
Connect a telephone line to the modem port of your Joybook and dial-up to the Internet.
Access local area network (LAN) by connecting a network cable to the LAN port of your Joybook.

Use various PC cards on the market by inserting one into the PC card slot of your Joybook.
Use the optical drive to access data on various kinds of discs or enjoy DVD/VCD movies.
Connect an earphone or microphone to the earphone or microphone jack to out­put or record sounds.

Output video images on your Joybook to a TV or AV device by connecting it to the S-Video socket on your Joybook.

Touring Your Joybook

Wireless Network Indicator
When WLAN is on, it lights up in
blue.
When Bluetooth is on, it lights up
in amber.
When WLAN and Bluetooth are
both on, it lights up in blue and
amber.
Battery Indicator
When the battery is charging, it
lights up in amber.
When the charging is complete, the
amber light goes off.
Flashing blue indicates that the
battery is running low.
Flashing amber indicates that the
battery is malfunctioning, in which
case you should contact service per-
sonnel.
Hard Disk Activity Indicator
Lights up in blue when Joybook R53 is
accessing data in the hard disk drive.
Four-in-One Memory Card
Access Indicator
Flashes when accessing a Memory
Stick, Memory Stick Pro, SD or MMC
memory card.
Caps Lock Indicator
Lights up in blue when the Caps Lock
is activated.
Num Lock Indicator
Lights up in blue when the Num Lock
is activated.
Left and Right Buttons
Equivalent to the left and right buttons on a mouse.
Power Switch with LED
Turns Joybook R53 on or off.
When the system is on, it lights up in
blue.
When the system is standby, it lights up
in amber.
Internet Hotkey
Starts up the Internet Explorer Web browser.
E-Mail Hotkey
Starts up the Outlook Express e-mail cli­ent.
Customizable Hotkey 1
Can be customized to open an applica­tion.
Customizable Hotkey 2
Can be customized to open an applica­tion.
Touch Pa d For controlling the on-screen cursor. Can
be activated and deactivated by pressing the Fn + F6 hotkey combination.

(1) Kensington Lock Hole You can attach a Kensington-type lock and cable to this
hole to prevent theft.
(2) Ventilation Holes For dissipating heat and keeping the computer at an optimal temperature.

LAN (Ethernet) Port
Allows Joybook to connect to a 10/100Mbps Ethernet network.
(4) IEEE 1394 (FireWire) Port For connecting high-speed peripherals such as digital
video cameras and other consumer electronics devices that use the IEEE 1394 (FireWire) interface.

(5) USB 2.0 Ports For connecting peripherals such as mice, digital cam­eras and MP3 players that use the USB interface.
(6) Four-in-One Memor y Card Slot Reads a Memory Stick, Memory Stick Pro, SD or MMC
memory card.

PC Card Slot
This PC Card slot accepts one Type-II PC Card. You can use it and various PC Cards on the market to further expand the capabilities of your Joybook. Insert the PC Card into the slots following the direction indicated on the card and complete related driver set­tings.

(8) PC Card Ejection Button You can use this button to eject an inserted PC Card. To eject a PC Card:
1. Quit all PC Card applications and shut down all PC Card functions.
2. Press and then release the PC Card ejection button, causing it to pop out.
3. When the button has popped out, push it in again to eject the PC Card.

(1) Earphone/SPDIF Audio Output Jack
Can be used to connect to an earphone/headset or external speaker for playing Joybook audio.
(2) Audio Input Jack Connects to a Hi-Fi set, radio, synthesizer, walkman,
etc.
(3) Microphone Input Jack Can be used to connect to a microphone for recording
sounds.

DVD-ROM/Combo/DVD-dual/Super-Multi Drive
(Optional) Supports multi-functional optical module for reading music CDs, VCDs and DVDs or burning CD-R/CD­RW or DVD+R/DVD+RW/DVD-RAM (optional) discs. Discs can be inserted/ejected by pressing the small ejection button on the drive.
If you wish to open the disc tray of the drive when
your Joybook power is off, or it can't be opened using the ejection button, insert a pointed object into the tray ejection hole next to the ejection but­ton to force open the disc tray.
(5) Wireless Device Switch Press this switch to turn on/off wireless connection function (WLAN and Bluetooth, Bluetooth is optional depending on your model).
(6) USB 2.0 Ports
For connecting peripherals such as mice, digital cam­eras and MP3 players that use the USB interface.

Function Hotkeys

You can use the function hotkeys to access commonly used functions or make quick settings. To use the hotkeys, press and hold the Fn (Function) key at the lower left corner of the keyboard, and then press the desired hotkey.
Fn + F1 Opens function keys on-line Help. Fn + F6 Activates or deactivates the touch pad.
Fn + F2 Puts Joybook into sleep mode. Fn + F7 Activates or deactivates the speakers.
Fn + F3 Switches display between the screen and an external monitor/projec-
tor, or allows simultaneous display; switches between internal/exter­nal display & TV-output.
Fn + F4 Decreases screen brightness. Fn + F10 Switches among the 3 basic power profiles of QPower.
Fn + F5 Increases screen brightness. Fn + F12 Switches between all 3 combinations of WLAN and Bluetooth on/
Fn + F8 Decreases volume.
Fn + F9 Increases volume.

Functionally equivalent to clicking the Start button on the Windows desktop.

Cancels minimization of all windows.

Activates or deactivates the numeric keypad integrated in the keyboard (indicated by the light gray shade in the illus­tration above).
Provides the same function as the right touch pad button, bringing up a contextual pop-up menu.

Getting Started with Windows XP

Your Joybook comes installed with Windows XP, Microsoft's latest operating sys­tem for consumer PCs. The first time you start up your Joybook, Windows XP will ask you a few questions. Answer the questions to ensure that your full rights are protected.

After you are done answering the questions, Joybook will restart and then you will
enter Windows XP for the first time. Click Start and select Help
and Support in the menu that appears. The Help and Support Center will appear and you can find more information on how to use

Next, please follow the steps below to setup the language for non-unicode pro­grams settings in Windows XP.
1. Click Start and then Control Panel.
2. Click Date, Time, Language, and Regional Options.

Using the QMedia Bar

The QMedia Bar integrates a number of software appli-
cations to enhance the multimedia experience on your Joybook. Click on the small triangle button and a rotating button bar will appear.
From the QMedia Bar, you can:
Click to start up Internet Explorer and surf the Internet.
Click to open Outlook Express for accessing e-mail.
Click to open QMusic. You can use QMusic to listen to MP3 or CD music,
burn MP3 music onto a CD (requires optional CD-burner), convert and save CD music into MP3 format, or create your personal favorite music album.
Click to start up Po werD VD for playing DVD or movie clips.
Click to activate PowerDirector with which you can create and edit your
personal movie clips.
Click to open Nero Express for burning your favorite music, photos and
files onto CDs.
Click to open Photo Explorer. It allows you to easily create and share your
photos.

Setting Up the QMedia Bar

Right-click on the QMedia Bar and a menu will appear on it.
You can:
Let QMedia Bar appear on top of all open programs by selecting Always on top.
Close QMedia Bar by selecting Exit.
Customizing the P1 and P2 hotkeys on your Joybook R53 by selecting Hotkey
Setting.
Adjust the size of QMedia Bar on the screen by selecting Size and then select an
appropriate size.

Customizing the Hotkeys

Using QMedia Bar, you can setup the P1 and P2 hotkeys on your Joybook R53 by yourself.
1. Right click on QMedia Bar and select Hotkey Setting, P1 or P2 hotkey and then a program you want to open when pressing the hotkey.

2. If the program you want is not on the menu, select ....
An Open dialogue box will appear.
3. Browse to select the executable (.exe) file of the desired program and click Open.
